The V-berth is looking DAMN SPIFFY! Will you be able to program the magic digital switch box thingie to turn on the "mood lighting" and start your Barry White playlist simultaneously via bluetooth? Asking for a friend...
Hi Mads, one thing you should consider is to put in a watertight companionway hatch instead of the old one. If the boat somehow would tip over in rough seas due to instability or other reasons, a fully watertight hatch is a somewhat cheap lifesaver because the interior of the boat acts as a watertight pod. Kind regards from your neighbors in Sweden😃
I loved the "thickened epoxy/SV Basik" reference. When you said "thickened epoxy I immediately thought of Onboard Lifestyle and then, lo and behold , you gave a shout out to them. I love the episodes (yours and theirs). Thank you for the mirth
I'm sure I'm not the only one who is looking forward to seeing more of one of your 'earthly belonging' from Obelix. The one with the 4 legs and fluffy tail :0)
10:58 haha " Thickened Epoxy! " . Take a drink of Tequila Linh. I always think of this channel when folks on S.V. Basic say " Glorious....Glorious Sanding '.
Mads, the double crossed fingers only work if you do it on both hands, while crossing your eyes under the light of a full moon on the second Tuesday of the week.
Wait all week and then the video just flys by.... Two meticulous guys, Mads & Teal from SV Basic....excellent work! Pretty Damn Spiffy vs Thickened Epoxy......cheers!
Mads, I have a lot of experience removing thick tarnish and clear coatings from bronze port lights. Heavy duty gel paint remover makes easy work of it. Xylene, acetone, etc., forget that stuff. Paint remover will take all the varnish off and some of the tarnish. I sand and use jeweler’s compound and rouge to remove the rest with a Drumel and felt wheels-maybe more work than you want to do.0
Your already becoming a legend mate, really appreciate you sharing, i know its a bit of a nightmare to film edit and plan the projects. You deserve the greatest success in the future. Thanks again
With a light-colored headliner and lighter bed linen the V-berth is going to look very nice, especially as it is a bookend to the open space of the belowdeck cabins. I think some sort of fabric or vinyl headliner is the best idea with that since it will help keep noises down inside. A painted ceiling is going to make the interior of the boat sound like an echo chamber, especially if you go with a traditional wood sole. You might want to bite the bullet and get the larger freezer while you still can and that becomes perpetually out of stock too. It's not like you have built a super low-energy electrical-miser boat. With the electric stove the extra juice to run a slightly larger freezer will hardly be noticed. You'll both be glad of the extra freezer space. Waiting and then eventually needing to build a freezer from scratch is something your optimistic schedulee simply can't afford.
Well while they may be cruising soon, I don't think the refit is going to be quite finished. It will be finished enough but I'm sure there'll be more happening as they're en route. Meanwhile you have SV Seeker, Acorn to Arabella, Salt and Tar, Leo/Tally Ho, Expedition Evans and their bendytoy that they have made not so bendy, Odd Life Crafting and Sailing Yaba. Sailing Yacht Zora doesn't update weekly but he's coming along.
Personally I think I would have preferred to have kept the white on wood motif. I have a feeling waking up to a dark wood interior will feel a bit claustrophobic. But, we'll see. And anyway it's not my berth.
Mads... I adore you, and wait with enthusiasm each week for your videos! I hope Ava knows how lucky she is and how hard you are working to achieve your combined dream! I can’t wait until you start sailing together! The only (literally the ONLY thing) I don’t like about your remodel is the cabinets in the galley, specifically the top line of the cabinets compared to the curve of the line above. I imagine something more organic in it’s place, that maybe “disguises” the angle and blends the lines... Either way, I love this journey, and best of luck!
drop the hinges into a mild acidic solution to remove the tarnish, better yet an ultrasonic cleaner with an acidic solution works wonders. Athena is looking fantastic!
Spiffy no doubt. Just a thought, I’d look at putting a couple of lights underneath the storage cabinetry in the forward berth, perhaps on a separate circuit controlled in the berth. Nice to gave that lighting for guests to read by. Plus, I just like a well lit room
Putting one more like even before watching it. eheheh love Sail Life. Ps: A cool update to have learned that the intention is to slowly making way to the US.
Another great video! but I just wish it was longer :( 16 mins just doesnt seem long enough! how about, say.. an hour long next week? lol jk keep up the great work and look forward to another video from you next week!
MADS!!! That V-birth is looking Super Spiffy!! Great job. As always, fantastic episode with smiles, giggles, oh glorious sanding and even a shout-out. Fun times.
I recommend buying a "Non-Ferrous" blade for your miter saw. The carbide teeth are set at a low angle which doesn't grab the item being cut. They work great for cutting solid plastic, composites, and aluminum as well as wood. The only downside is that the blade costs almost as much as a low end miter saw.
Looking pretty spiffy, I hope you plan on insulating behind the mahogany rails, wood definitely be more cozy in the v-berth. ⛵👍👍💛. I believe a freezer can be built by hand in 2 days and shipped by 2 days, I might reconsider the freezer company. ..
Dyin laughing here how you called out Teal and Linh on Basilk for thickened Epoxy!!! And thank you for supporting my drinking issues!!! Time for a shot!
I think that GREEN on the hinges is tarnished: Flour, Salt, and White Vinegar Combine equal parts of all three ingredients to create a paste. Apply a thin layer of that paste to the tarnished brass and leave it for an hour before rinsing with warm water and drying. There are a few other recipes but have at it here and see if that helps!
And a fan to induce over preassure in the forward cabin to stop dust from entering there. You might have to lead in outside air to feed the fan so you don't have to build a dust filter to circulate air in the boat.

I was thinking the same, but near the end of the video he mentions about removing the slats for varnishing. He’ll (probably) install the insulation during that time.
I just finished cleaning up some hinges for my boat. Vinegar works great. It may take overnight or a few days. Mine were SS as are the screws. I had some low viscosity paint stripper and soaked the hinges and screws in that for only an hour or so. All came out like brand new. Washed with plenty of water.
Mads, that V-berth looks fantastic. I was going to simply put cushioned lining back up in mine...but I'm pretty sure I'm going to copy exactly what you've done now. Seriously impressed.
The V-berth is looking SPIFFY indeed :-) ... but ... it might be not a bad idea to paint the bulkhead to the chainlocker white after all ... would make the space look longer / bigger. As it stands the V- birth is rather dark ... especially compared to the rest of bright and shiny Athena. keep up your amazing work ... whoop whoop XD
I don't have the "hard stuff" for a shot, so I got a beer out of the fridge. Yeah, _Thickened Epoxy_! Now, I am just waiting for Line , Teal, or Emmy to call their hardtop: "Spiffy"! Best, Webhead USA

I bet Mads will sync the 'mood lighting & lights' throughout the boat. Maybe tie in some underwater lights?
Hehe...Yes! I love that idea! Dim lights, fade in Barry White. That's on the list ;)
Great minds Brad!!!
@@SailLife if you soak brass and bronze and copper in - acid drain cleaner - the stuff will come up like brand new

Saying "Thickened Epoxy" does not feel the same without doing a shot of tequila though.
If people could desist. I'm out of tequila and paracetamol.
Oh glorious
Remember when your intro was 'in roughly 2.5 years' now it's 165 days... How time flies when your having fun. Looks like the plans coming together..
The mahogany and varnish give the Vee berth such a warm, cosy feel, and it is such a spiffy job; I'm sure you will not regret it.
I knew it. Mads is a Vulcan Contortionist. Sand gloriously and prosper. The V-berth looked amazing.

Nothing beats a little bit of glorious sanding.
I'm surprised and amazed that you haven't used a miter saw until now.
That’s skill on display for you!
Plus, he’s had use of tools in the workshop.
V berth is looking great. A light coloured headliner and upholstery should brighten it up nicely. 👍
As I told Lihn at Onboard lifestyle. I'm going to die if you keep this up.
You and me both! 😜🥃
LOVE THE MUSIC!!! that steel-bodied slide talks to my soul!! hahaha!
The forward cabin is looking great! I hope the headliner ends up being a light color, I would think would help open the feeling of that space up.
That was funny hehehe SV Basic reference :) they did the same. nice community.
4:12 you said you were putting armorflex behind slats... but you just put up slats with no insulation?
man you look tired. your boat is the nicest thing, don´t press too hard on yourself. thanks for sharing the lovely journey. take care. peter

I must admit that I am slowly starting to worry what I am gonna do with my life once you are finished refitting Athena, Mads..
Don't worry. Leo has got years left on Tally Ho, and Acorn to Arabella will probably take near-on a decade.
Agreed! Only about 24 weeks - and therefore 24 more episodes - of DIY rehab left!
