ahh the famous GF gambit
Quick update. Girlfriend mad. And I am 100% sure that I'm not falling for a fools mate. 😂
bruh poor kindergarten kid was probably traumatized for the rest of his life...
Probably never moved f pawn ever again
Yeah the kid's chess career got off to a rough start. Probably to this day whenever he's given chess advice from anyone there's a part of him that remembers that experience at least on a subconscious level. And that also goes for him getting advice from anyone on anything.
He switched to League of Legends after that so he could flame his teammates
@@lospollos7793 "Good!" ~Ben Finegold
Little did we know that it was actually xqc
That mating story with the bishop and queen at the kindergarten tournament was absolutely beautiful. lmfao
falls then SPLAT! It was checkmate
mating story at the kindergarten... hmm
I agree, that was atrosiously funny!
I mated one guy who used the bird with the same moves and i laughed my ass off, that's probably the shortest game i've ever played.
@@dylanburnett2074 it was checkmate both times bud
“.... The same kid!“ killed me 🤣🤣🤣
That kid will never go f4 again in his life
Yeah it was just nice humour before but the way he delivered that line made the whole joke just so so good.

Everyone watching: ahh yes interesting
Everyone watching: *still tries to get scholar’s mate every game*
Basically every game in my noob ~600 rating games. Just started playing a month ago.
ALLIDOISNGUYEN don’t worry you still see it a shit load around 1500.
I like when people try it on me and I just know what they are trying to do lol.
@@BlurryXenon I think you still see the idea of the bishop and queen battery too early at 1500 , but personally I haven't seen any actual scholar's mate attempt
sora neptune well bishop queen battery’s on like turn 6 with knight moves in between us still pretty much scholars mate attempt.
I'm so beginner that i don't even know which opening is each.
@KakashiLee No.

Hikaru: *Puts Caro-Kann h4 in Unbreakable*
Also Hikaru after three seconds: Eh... probably garbage tier...
I don’t think Hikaru really understands chess at the beginner level like Gotham does
For hikaru under 2000 is beginner 🤭, for us 2000 is our dream 😂
Doesn't hikaru sometimes laugh and say someone is playing like "a 2400 rated player" when they make bad moves?
dude i dont know what to say
That’s why he was so deferential to him for the tier list while also giving great, high level, but more easily comprehendible than is typical for himself commentary imo
This comment was a sucker punch lmao
Levy: Actually explains his thought process
Hikaru: I disagree/agree
Levy: This is why I think this is good or bad.
Hikaru: disagree
Levy looks so upset every time. lol.
but, he knows Hikaru is on another level.
@@quack420 I don't think he is upset he is just happy/disappointed when Hikaru agrees/disagrees with him.
I think everyone can relate to that.
@@quack420 Hikaru being on another level doesn't mean anything when we are talking about low elo players though.
But still he respects Hikaru (or just doesn't want to upset him since Hikaru seems to be like a kind of godfather to his career).
@@isaacjacob3590 I think what he meant to say is that Hikaru just simply knows better. Hikaru being on another level is actually very relevant here because he most definitely has analysed far deeper into this stuff than Levy, thus Hikaru most likely is aware of far more flaws of the opening that would make it less beginner-friendly.
Of course, they are being pretty subjective with this stuff, but it's not a bad idea to listen to people who know Chess 1000000000000000x better than you. Even if their opinions may be biased, based on experience, or mainly based on other subjective things, there is the possibility that not everything they say is. In which case, it's good to at least take into consideration Hikaru's tier list when doing research into what openings you should learn.

Fried liver is also a good opening
The Botvinnik-Carls defense in the Advance caro-kann is the only way
You should include the crab opening. It's the opening everyone plays on one of their first chess games because they want those rooks out. 1. a4 2.h4
Connect those rooks on rank 3

You're not a true Bird's player if you haven't gotten checkmated on the 3rd or 4th move.

@@vikramkrishnan6414 no, GM and IM doesn't matter that much, levy actually can beat half of the GMs, its just that levy has taught chess and knows how beginners react and Hikaru is such a high high lvl player that he thinks differently coz he has studied so much that he knows the possible responses which he gets from other GMs, but in beginners maximum opponents wont know all these 50-60 openings

"unbreakable" might be a more suited title for GMs
mate in 1s rnt even unbreakable in the hands of a beginner 😳
I kinda like learning/playing bird's opening as a beginner exercise. Maybe moreso for adult beginners than kids though. Not because it's good. More because it quickly teaches you an important principle about opening arrangements, why most of the best ones are put together the way they are, and how things can go very wrong very fast if the opening itself has a hole. However, when you survive the opening with the bird's you're usually in good shape from then on (at beginner and even intermediate level).

in order to try and get better at chess I've been using these videos to study new openings and researching the ones that catch my interest, one of which was the caro-kahn, and I went and studied it and found it really really hard to grasp, but I wasn't sure why, then after 3 days I came back to this video and hikaru completely blew my mind with his immediate "it's not good for beginners" explanation of the defense

RIP to everyone who came learn
When I watched this video, every time Hikaru named a "good" opening I played a blitz game with that opening and won. I won because of the thematic ideas they named.
Thanks, been needn this
16:34 as a beginner myself, i LOVE the birds opening. Its wonderful.
The chat when Dutch defense was being explained: G E K O L O N I S E E R D
lol
Wow thanks hikaru and gotham for this, i restarted playing chess and after getting obliterated in online chess i got sad but this video gave me inspiration again. I really needed this
If you keep getting obliterated there will come a point where the matchmaking brings you down to your level. I fell down to 1200, then stopped falling; from there I could improve.
@Qimodis Cant be more ambitious without the knowledge to go for it. Players also need to be realistic
@@kellamyoshikage286 Relatable lol, now in 1000 i finally feel like i can do something
I had another weird phase where, because I had watched so much of Agadmator's content and been exposed to so much chess before playing seriously, I was able to improve really quickly once I just got the practical experience to understand what I was doing. So now I'm in the high 1700's, low 1800's. Though my performance is still all over the place...

Levy: Explains why the opening is good or isn't good for beginners
Hikaru: Yes, but actually no
I used to mirror the moves my opponent made every time, when i played against my friends they were so confused and I thought it was a legit way to play. This was a very long time ago so i knew next to nothing about chess, only the moves...

It's me. I'm the same kid from kindergarten
@Manuel Mendoza a hug from that f pawn which you shouldn't have moved
the story is hilarious lmao
Oh damn you added the dragodorf, thanks guys!
I definitely agree with the rating. Most beginners (like me) are struggling to even learn the basic Sicilian lines, so playing such a tricky opening is difficult when you could go for something more direct.
Thanks really appreciate it coz this is much needed for me...
I looked up "Bird's Opening", this was the first result and within 5 seconds of the video all of my dreams of learning this opening were crushed.
It's not a bad opening, it's a bad opening for *BEGINNERS*, so yeah it only sucks mildly 👍
at least you know now
Hikaru you are the best youtuber ever!!
Legendary
Then you have not seen radjabov
Thank you! You are the best!
Been watching since Pog Champs. Just now realized I haven't been subbed. You've helped me dominate from 1100-1600
Me: Learned Bird’s opening first, and only played Blackburne’s mating maneuver.
Me: Watching how they trash talk my boy.
I think for beginners you also need a tier of "no prepped moves will be played"
Especially siciliaj, you go e4 c5 and 100% of the time they play bishop c4 and go for scholars
i showed the catalan to two u1400 players (i was a similar rating) at a tournament -- they had never heard of it before -- and they both won their next game with white using it -- i climbed to 1700 that summer myself -- it's actually super easy to play and get the idea -- even if you lose the c-pawn because you dont know how to recover it, a doubled pawn down is almost insignificant at the beginner level and the rest of the game is often very straightforward for white -- you'll win the cpawn back almost by accident eventually and black trying to hold it becomes complicated for beginners
Ty man now iknow what to teach my students
that opening story is hilarious, lmao
Another tier might be "this is good for learning"
this is literally what the list is for?! u must be dumb
d4 openings are good for beginners because there is calm play without much calculations. I almost exclusively played d4 as a beginner. My pawn was already protected by the queen and this prevented me from losing it when I forgot to check if it was en prise
Beginners tend to just play for the scholar's mate bringing out the bishop and the queen. When they play black, they usually go with e5, Sicilian or french.
They should have had a begginer giving insight on this video, would have been hilarious
As an Alekhine's Defense fan, these guys break my heart.
Just the existence of that Four Pawns line makes me never ever play that opening again as black lmao
Personally, I think their rating of the Alekhine's is illogical. I mean, the pawn structure out of the opening typically resembles the Caro-Kann, and they give the Caro-Kann high marks for being easy to play. IMO, the Alekhine's is also relatively straightforward - just attack White's advanced pawns, and beginner level opponents will generally end up with what could be described as "not so much a pawn mass as a pawn mess." If your worried about the Four Pawns Attack, it's no big deal, as low level opponents will invariably end up with overextended pawns that are easily picked off later. Besides - and this is an important point - more than 50% of your low-level opponents won't play 2. e5. Either they'll play 2. Nc3 or 2. d3, giving you immediate equality, or they'll hang the e-pawn (2. Nf3, 2. d4, 2. Bc4, etc.)
So don't let the comments in this video discourage you from playing the Alekhine's. Heck, the fact that your opponents may regard it as a bad opening is all the more reason to play it.
I needed this so much
Really useful video guys. I am 1230 rated on Rapid, without knowing openings, it's time to learn. I feel like I am a good beginner. I did learn Gioco Piano a long time ago, I kind of base everything on that, I need to know more opening now, I like Ponziani for white.
“The same kid!” Bahahah dude.
11:03 here you go random twitch user in the chat
I think the Berlin Defense is one of the most intuitive openings for a beginner. You are likely to come up with it by chance without even seeing it before.
I have no idea about this line but somehow I managed to check mated my brother about a month ago with the first variations of opening you showed in this video
10:25 "Bengko Gambit named after... Yes class, Mr. Gambit" - Ben Finegold
Ever heard of Pal Benko... also how isit someone can state something so bold... just like that.... eehhh
These are my openings
I've literally just started studying chess yesterday and it's so wild to me that chess is 'this is really great but only if your opponent does a very, very specific set of moves otherwise it's garbage'
"Can we swear and they'll edit it out?"
Chat in the side bar: swearing like Jules Winnfield
If you're making a part 2, try to talk more like levy, providing reasons and justifications rather than agree/disagree.
In my opinion, for a beginner, he should practice the following openings:
1- Italian and Spanish game.
2- Queen's Gambit
3- Colle and London Systems.
Why?
@@vulcanworf7422 I think these are good opening for beginners, because they allow for a rapid occupation of the center, and development of pieces. Other openings, such as the Sicilian, the King's Indian variants or others, may get very sharp and the center may become an issue if the player is not very energetic. Also, there are a lot of famous games with these ideas.
17:22 That Bg7 move worked for me today
im so happy hikaru likes the advanced french coz its rlly underrated
Am i as a 1500 considered a beginner or intermediate?I just want to know if these openings are good for me
Probably intermediate or close to it, a beginner is not going to know much outside how the pieces are set up and move, and possibly the basic mechanics of a checkmate... that's about it.
1500 on what website?
Intermediate :)
We did a Chess simul with Hikaru last year, huge fan!! We also hired Finegold to make videos, we love the whole chess community :)
And we love you back, just subscribed :)
Such great content
Rats, I have to wait until part 3 to see if the Reti opening is any good for me. I'm not sure why I'm so drawn to that opening, but I've been studying it for the past week.
Sometimes Hikaru can be a little too harsh. There's no need to treat Levi like trash.
"as you know" yes of course everyone knows this.
28:28 How to counter Danish gambit:
Play Bb4+. Now your rook is about to get trapped and taken by the bishop so no matter what move comes next, play Nf6. If they push e5, play d5 to trade the dangerous bishop. If they had played the knight to block the check, play Ne4.
Bxf7+ is a move they may play and follow with a queen check. If this happens calmly take the bishop and remember the resource d5! springing your position to life.
If they don't play e5, castle short. In some positions you will have to play d5, in some you play d6.
Pretty much the only chess "study" I've done in the last few months is learning the Englund Gambit lines for white where you let the queen check happen. At 1500 bullet, that gets played I'd say as much as 30% of the time (not an exaggeration either, maybe I'm just unlucky): it's unbelievably frustrating knowing how objectively bad it is with proper play, but not having the time to punish it properly.
