Thanks!
Thanks comrade
i am new to chess. it's a little confusing, which one is for black and white?
I like how he says, "As everybody knows", I definitely don't know. That's why I'm watching, lol.
I know quite a bit of opening theory and am watching to learn more about some of thess
Hikaru "I actually kind of agree" Nakamura
The jerome is as legit as it gets, i have a 20% win rate with it, would definitely recommend
20% in any game its just crap but in chess you also have draws so if its 20 wins/60draws/20losses its legit
Esteban Coronel This is the Jerome we’re talking about here. Obviously that’s 20% win by checkmate and 80% win by resignation
@@randomcomment9984 hahahahahah nice
@@randomcomment9984 Naaaaah... People with lower elo don't resign, like, EVER! Probably 20% win by checkmate, 10% win by resignation, 70% win on time (50% from abandonment and 20% from flagging)
I don't understand how any opening where you sacrifice 2 pieces and put your queen on the 5th rank is recommended for beginners. Seems like "tricks only" to me but what do I know.
Hikaru ‘What do you think Levy’ Nakamura
First opening I ever played was bringing my knights out and throwing them around aimlessly until they both died. Then I got down to business.
To defeat
the Huns
Alekhine defence mkolo mbembe variation 😂
I love this video. Extremely practical hearing these opinions on openings for the beginner (or above) which the starting player could not possibly have any knowledge about.
Levy sounds, like, hurting with disagreement, with every 'oKaY' he gives Hikaru's selections.
Yeah I felt that too or maybe he's disturbed about something else? But definitely Hikaru's assessment seems wayward! I mean how can you call the Jerome unbreakable? Its silly!
@@fireheart1026 bro Jerome is really good i used it and won
@@nightcorequeen1074 15% of your games?
Levy wouldn't dare challenge Hikaru, he lets Hikaru walk over him like he's the carpet it's pretty humiliating
@@mikehawk9099 I don't think so!
I love both yours and GothamChess’s channels. I use UA-cam to watch video game steams typically, but I’m finding myself watching chess channels like yours. Keep up the great work! I am a huge fan!
love this series! Helps me as a 1200 player find what openings are most optimal for me at my ranking
Hey Hikaru. Could you please turn on the automatic generated English subtitles. It helps to learn.
As a Grunfeld player, I agree. I "learned" the opening as a 1500. I'm currently close to reaching master level, and I still don't feel comfortable in many of the lines. The opening is so complex and there are many lines where black has to play counter-intuitive moves for beginners like f5, allowing white to get a passed d-pawn, keeping center tension with the c5 and d4 pawns, amongst countless other things. This is not to mention all the different variations black has to be prepared for like the fianchetto variations, 5. Bh4, 5.Bf4, the Russian system, the different nuances between Rb1 and Rc1, how to handle an early h4-h5 etc.
For context, I didn't "learn" the opening. Very rarely did people actually go into the mainlines since most 1500s dont know much opening theory. More just the concepts, pressuring d4, and looking to break white's center. But if I could go back, I would. I would've rather have learned something more straightforward like Queen's Indian.
It's a really fun opening tho, and if you play KiA you can try it with white up a tempo. It's complicated tho, I lose a lot with it lmao.
As a 8 year old kid i played chess to a regional level. I wasn’t amazing or anything but I remember i played the fried liver attack almost every game. It was unbelievably effective at that level
"I can't believe you said that levy... But I do agree"
Hikaru showing an opening : So, as everybody knows,
Me : ._.
The Jerome Gambit is still objectively the best opening in chess.
Exactly, i would love to see it in Pogchamps 2
When you think about it, the Fool's Mate is actually a great beginner's opening, it teaches you a very good lesson right away :)
been fun playing and watching doing each opening
Loving these time stamps!

Nice video, good explanation and two good players! 👍
"but at the beginning level -7 doesn't mean anything." LOL
timestamp?
@@realykid 19:30 it starts with some context
I feel like for tier lists done with more then one person, if the two people have opposing standings on the tier list they should place it in the middle between the their two opposing options. Hopefully this would prevent Levy feeling overshadowed by Hikaru just finalising his decision in his preferred tier.
The Hillbilly!!! Actually GM Simon Williams actually has played the Hillbilly Attack in online rapid controls very often and White builds up a rather good Kingside attack. Another idea behind the Hillbilly is after g6 Qh4 is to play f3 very soon and then exf3 Nxf3. Then you end up with the open file and typical ideas such as exchanging the dark square Bishops, Knight to g5, sacking the exchange on f6 to remove a critical defender etc...
There's really quite a bit of venom in this unsound opening. Blacks a bit better but does have to defend well.
I think both bong and fred have merits for teaching beginners how to defend. Should not be played in tournament but it can be a good teaching tool.
Is there a part 3 to this awesome series
"Gucci" Piano - that's rich.
lol I didn't quite get why Hikaru called it that way, is that a joke or something? English is not my mother tongue so I could have missed some lore
When you play chess on the piano made by Gucci, then you obviously play the Italian opening "Gucci Piano", duh.
Really good! I needed this! Is there a place where I can download the final list?
Yes I was looking for this too
In Modern Defence (nowadays popularized By Tiger Hillarp Persson in his book "Tiger's Modern")
-Black basically always start with g6 + Bg7
-Next move most of the time is d6.
-Also Black aims to play a6+b5 if white plays Nc3.
-Nf6 is delayed and that separates Modern from King's Indian or Pirc.
-Black aims to play e5 and on some occasions c5.
For example 1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.Nf3 d6 4.Nc3 a6...
Yeah that looked like the Pirc, not the modern they showed.
I feel the exchange caro is great for white as a beginner. It's very simple to play, much like the london system (indeed, the piece placement is pratically the same). I think it might be the easiest way to combat the caro as a beginner.
When I was learning the london, I read an article saying london is so good it's actually bad for beginners because it tempts them to play it all the time thereby stifling their learning processing
I'd like to argue that Hippo is a great defense, and deserves to be higher ranked than it was. I'd also say its more of a Black-side than a White-Side opening. As someone learning/using it, seeing it be dismissed so quickly without much thought was harsh.
So you're telling me Hikaru remembers the game he had playing four knights from that long ago. How deep is the void in his head???
I’m 600-700 rating and the biggest problem I see with a lot of these openings is in 99% of the games I play as white black immediately pushes the same pawn I do so from move 2 on I’m not going to see these positions they’re describing. Maybe I’m too beginner for the beginner video lol
It's two of us with the same problem...
Really wish you’d done these separately for white & black.
One thing I'd say about Jerome is that it's by far the most fun I've had playing any opening.
How good should you be before playing grunfeld? If I continue to play the grunfeld as a main vs d4 will I stunt growth as a chess player?
Part 1 and 2 are the only 40 minute videos I’ve actually watched all the way through
Fascinating 😅
Keep up the good work and have a good day
The way Hikaru said "Robert Hess" I thought it was a Ligma setup XD
Dude please. Stop uploading every time I have plans 😂
My plan is to watch hikaru all along
Hope you didn't stand your gf up again because of this upload.
ive gained 300 sr with hipp instantly its so good. i tried many other openings but this one is so good in rapid games most of low sr players dont know what to do against it
In the move order he showed for the Italian 4 Knights, black could have done the fork trick with 4...Nxe4. You were supposed to go 4.d3 before Nc3.
You played the giucco piano central variation not the giucco pianissimo which is easy, has simple game plan and straight forward attack on the king side
10:10 Nakamura putting Levy on the spot right after he lied lol (scratch scratch) shoulder
Modern defense is different from King's Indian because it's playable into 1e4 - you have a lot of setup moves to protect your knight before you move it out to f6
I think the chat should have been consulted on openings like Fried Liver and Grob since they are the primary openings in most of their repertoires
Sweet follow up.
Study tierlist could be nice i guess!
what is strange that the "fried liver attack" implies that it is up to white to decide if the opening comes on the board
but its mostly up to black taking the d5 pawn with his knight
Also I never knew that line, I thought that we always play Na5 after white takes on d5 to either exchange the light square bishop or make the bishop retreat
14:05
I lost one of my recent games to the Grob and I’m still disappointed in myself
Grob is high risk high reward game
Four knight Italian: tricks only
There are tricks
hikaru says something
levy: ok..
Last video I was like "Evan's gambit better be at the top of legendary" and it was. This time, I want to see Fried Liver at the top of Legendary. They are my two favourite openings (at 1800 level).
My takeaway so far is that I should play italian instead of ruy lopez in open games, because I could get fried liver or I could get Evan's gambit etc etc.
Levy: Get a life
Hikaru : I agree, how could you say something so controversial but yet so brave
These videos are really instructive but I’d watch them just for Hikaru’s laugh.
Why there's no time stamp i just curious about jerome gambit :(
Edit : nvm found it 22:54
Best aggressive opening
@@tteerabeats9116 true, its really good if you played against someone who doesn't know about this opening
No love for the Najdorff! I'm really surprised. I get that the theory goes way beyond what a beginner understands, but isn't that just as true for white? I'm curious to see where other Sicilian variations will be placed.
@Ze TheGame That makes sense. I do enjoy gambits. On the other side of things, I also like knowing that I'll never reach a level where familiarity with the Najdorf is no longer helpful. At some point, I might have to stop playing the Smith-Morra gambit.
The only people under 2000 that play the Sicilian are sheep
Not really. White just needs to know be3, f3, 0-0-0, qd2 then shove the g and h pawns down the board till mate. Black is the one teetering on the edge. Also most e6 and nc6 lines get hit by the maroczy bind where white is just better. Thats why carlsen plays the shevsknikov, no maroczy bind
@@johnvuillemot4805 The possibility of opposite side castling is one of the aspects of the Najdorff that I find appealing. I get the impression from chess commentators and educators that such games have to be played differently. The Najdorff potentially gives me a chance to practice. I think I'll have to break out of the beginner level before I see much of that.
Najdorf is well loved in the first series for grandmaster level openings
I've won a game with the Grob Attack in a tournament at the high school level. It's 100% just for lolz though. I think that was the game I got a pawn checkmate by leaving him one pawn to push while I pushed two pawns and my king and got him trapped in the corner. So yeah, you need to understand some theory and actually chess know-how to play it well, but against anyone over say 800-1000, you'll probably not do great.
Can you please make a videos on “Chess Opining Tier list for Advanced players”
Still waiting to see where vienna ends up, one of my most enjoyable openings
Love the Gnocchi piano
London System 30:18
Kings Indian 26:14
I'm surprised Hikaru's first book wasn't Best Lessons of a Chess coach by his stepdad Sunil, which wasn't recently updated.
Might be a stupid question but how do you know which openings are for black or white?
The last move played in the sequence.
In all of life,There is a Rhythm
holy smokes
I really like playing Marshall attack for back cus I love attacking. What I don't like is boring opening
I like the idea of going for fried liver, if cant get go for itallian.
"We play the same openings, but the results of our games are different!" Lol me too friend... me too.
@GMHikaru I saw the chat saying the Modern is g6, not d6, is that true? Is d6 the Pirc?
Pirc is 1.d6 2.nf6 3.g6 where you financhetto the bishop and then attack with e5.
Modern is 1.g6 2.bg7 3.d6 where you play a6 and b5 while delaying nf6
@@johnvuillemot4805 ah, so Hikaru did play the Pirc by accident instead of the Modern 34:24. It can go in the blooper reel.
What they said is the Fred is not the Fred. 1.f3 is Barnes or Gedults opening. 1.f3 and 2.Kf2 is the Wandering King or Fried Fox Attack plus it has other names. The Fred is 1.e4 f5.
Good or bad the accelarated dragon is e4 c5 Cf3 g6 d4 Ag7!?
Yay, club level list coming up!
My sister in law tried to "confuse me" by using non-traditional openings and opened up with the fools mate. Needless to say, stick to traditional openings.
I have a question; you always say that the openings which dont put a pawn in the center early are bad for beginners but you put kings indian in legendary and it often happenes to me as a beginner that i dont get to put a pawn in the center when playing kings indian because they push their central pawn to 5th rank early. Is there a way to put a pawn forward earlier in kings indian, maybe before i develop both my knights and bishops?
I believe Sicilian Dragon (a half cousin of the Kings Indian) has the answer you are looking for
Little did Levy know Hafu would go on to win pogchamps 2.
10:11 The most sincerest "Okay" and "I'm agreeing" I've ever heard
13:12 This hurt me so much. I will stand for Levy T_T
waiting for part 3
Does watching this work for someone who is
Well that was stupid of me to ask shouldve looked in the description
Why does the chat seem to not be highly approving of Hikaru’s commentary on previous matches and recollections regarding specific openings? They all say he’s “flexing”, but he’s just being truthful. He even mentions games where he lost to specific positions, so why the hate? Or if they dislike his commentary, then why don’t they leave? Hikaru and Levy, please keep up the great content!
He is flexing towards Levy here and there, but then again who doesn't flex towards friends?
It's just a meme at this point, people just always call him out dor flexing. Doubt many people mean it in a a negative way.
Hikaru, here in Brazil there is this UA-cam channel of Raffael Chess, he creates a series named "Grob challenge", where he wants to know which rate he can achieve only playing Grob in Chess.com, it is a very fun series. He also played the Choker tournament just trying to play with you. Here in Brazil this channel is one of the most fun chess channel, if you can take a look i think you will agree.
Haha, amazing. 'I kind of agree' .
Gucci Piano 😆- That's an expensive piano! Also Ally-Ekine. I guess this Hikaru is new to chess?
I play Najdorf like this.
e4-c5
Nf3-d6
d4-cxd4
Nxd4-Nf6
Then I play Bc4 instead of Nc3 cus if black takes Nxe4 I have Qh5 trick then if black goes a6 not to take e4 then I play Nc3
Funny how he doubted about Hess teaching Hafu the Najdorf, asked if he was being paid to make her take a dive, and then she went on to win the whole thing haha
Does anyone notice the comment in the chat at 31:30? "Levi is currently playing the *nus opening on the toilet" LOL
What about scotch gambit? I about to transition to that opening from danish gambit.
My lichess rating is 1800 for blitz.
I would say unbreakable or even legendary for beginners
@@paulmorphy6314 why is that? Can you please explain it?
