There are a few possible reasons that cause the Windows unable to complete format errors, but you can definitely fix them with the following solutions.
How to fix Windows was unable to complete the format?
The first solution to troubleshoot Windows was unable to complete format error is using Disk Management. If you want to format an external drive, connect it with your PC. Then, right-click “This PC” and click “Manage”. Click “Disk Management” to launch the disk management window, and right-click the drive that you want to format, and tap “Format”. Use the drop-down menu to set the right file-format.
The second solution is using the Diskpart Command to fix the Windows was unable to complete format error. You can directly follow the steps in the video at 2:45s.
If you’re still unable to format the drive, there’s a huge probability that it’s write-protected. In this situation, you can remove the protection to make it writable. Usually, the majority of external hard drives (including SD Cards) have a switch that’ll let you turn on and turn off the write-protection. Moreover, in some situations, the viruses/malware may not allow you to operate the format properly, it is recommended to use some reliable antivirus to clean your drive.
Besides, if the “Windows unable to format" device error occur due to disk error. We can try to do the error checking in the drive. Just Open File Explorer, connect your device to PC, and right-click on the problematic device, select "Properties". Click the Check button under "Error checking". you can choose to Scan the drive if wanted or Repair the drive if errors were found. Wait for the process to finish. Now, you can right-click on your device and complete the format using Windows File Explorer.

i have a very new Sandisk Extreme pro version 64gb and its not 3 weeks i use it to records videos in my drone.....i connect it normally to my pc and my tv also sometimes..i pulled out the usb converter and since then the card seems like dead....i tried format all ways and it shows as only 30mb not 64GB in windows ....i tried your program..nothing..i tried like 10 other similar programs ..nothing...i tried partition commands on Dos...nothing.....can the card me damaged and dead already????? there is nothing i didnt try .....

Hello sir, I tried all the methods and also used third party softwares and also recoverit software, after I run format in the softwares, it showed me that it's a Bad disk... Tried all these steps still not able to format it. It shows as an error msg "Virtual Disk Service error: The media is write protected" Can you please help on this?
I've tried everything but wasn't able to do one of the options that required me to format it in DiskPart.
When I went to type format fs=[format type], the volume didn't have a format and the status was listed as Unusuable.
I have no clue what to do.

Hi Micheal, just bought a brand new usb flash drive and my laptop recognised it as a 1TB but then asked me to format it as i wanted to use it as a back up drive. now after trying to back up it recognises something in position drive E but properties say there is nil bytes on the drive. tried following the video but as soon as i went back to format the same message came up windows was not able to complete the task. i think i have either bought a bad drive or i have somehow corrupted it and its now useless.
will see if amazon will let me return it .

I was formatting my sd card with the quick format box unchecked and because it was taking too long so I cancelled it and now it is not accessible and in raw format what should I do.

Ok so I have this problem for some time right now and I couldn’t find any solution for it so I really hope you can help me
Here is the problem when I connect the usb drive to my computer and try to open it, it says “you need to format the disk in drive E: before you can use it” but when I hit “format disk” it says “windows was unable to complete the format.”
So I can’t format my usb no matter what , I tried diskpart and minitool partition wizard all are the same it just won’t happen,
I also tried to delete volume through computer management and again creating a new simple volume and assigning a letter to driver but the usb is still as RAW and to open it I need to format it and as I said that just not gonna happen!
here is also some info that I encountered, may help you to find me a solution!
- Well I think I know what cause this problem, my usb was attached to my laptop and my windows ran into this error “driver power state failure” and my usb was connected to my laptop whole time and after I restart my windows all files in my usb was corrupted and I cound’t format my usb so tried to delete volume (computer management) and it just couldn’t format my usb so it stay RAW, it is detectible by windows but no accessible!
- And second thing I ran into was I tried to scan my usb by nod antivirus and there was no virus detected, however there is this error (Idk if this is really an error) that says “boot sector of disk E: unable to open [4]”
- I used different devices and other usbs, the ports are ok and other usbs are also ok so there is no hardware damage or corrupted port.
- I also tried all your steps in your videos none helped me [ for exp when I use “diskpart” after I enter “select partition 1” is says “there is no partition selected.”
I tried to explain everything so I really hope you can help me here.

Hello,i am trying to format my sdcard for over a week,i tried several windows programs and even kali linux.The card wont format and funny thing that folders appears back when i delete them....and its not write protected neither the usb hub.

I am trying to use a blank brand new DVD-R Disc. Its stupid asf. When I do that on my laptop it does it in seconds. When I try it on my PC it says it was unable to finish formatting. It's pissing me tf off.
None of these work for me unfortunately. I can still/see all the files on my micro sd card, but cant delete them or format the card. For some reason mine also shows like 4 partitions as well which is odd because I never did that. Theres no viruses or malware found either. Im stumped.

What you probably have are PARTITIONS you have to remove.
1. Go to Disk Management in windows thingy.
2. Find the usb drive that has the problem
3. There should be a box with LINES running diagonally through it. DELETE THAT ONE... AND DELETE the one without the lines
4. Now format it and like this comment cause I know it worked for u.

Hi there, thank you for your question! Check if your SD card has a physical lock switch on the side if it does then make sure to unlock it. Try using the diskpart command in Windows to remove the write protection. Open the Command Prompt and type diskpart. Type list disk and identify the number of your SD card. Type select disk followed by the number of your SD card. Type attributes disk and check if the read-only attribute is on. Type attributes disk clear "readonly" to remove the write protection. Type exit and disconnect and reconnect your SD card. Format your SD card as desired. 3) If you’re using a Mac, you can use the First Aid tool to fix any issues.
Tried every possible way to format or remove write protection from my USB Pen drive, none of them ever worked from last 7 years
nothing works, my 128gb USB is 2 months old and turning it into a LINUX MINTH Boot drive it ruined it.

None of it helped :( I can see the drive and browse the files, even copy some of the files, but when I try to format it one way or another it fails.

Hi there, thank you for your question! First if you have any important data on the drive I would recommend trying to back it up or use data recovery software to retrieve your data if its important. Then I would recommend trying to use a Bootable USB device to launch into windows and then type CMD in the search bar and launch it and then type the following commands "diskpart", "list disk", "select disk [your disk] " , "clean". Hopefully this solves your issue if not it might be an issue with the drive itself and I recommend taking it to a professional.
