most pieces have a little exposition to interest the audience and i love it. but i also love big, beautiful, choruses - and tchaikovsky hit us with all that angst, emotion, and power with the very first measures. it's like starting a book with the most profound piece of wisdom ever and elaborating on it for the rest of the book. first time i heard this i didn't need to go past ten seconds into the piece to think "this is the most beautiful thing i've ever heard". i don't believe in love at first sight but this piece? i fell hard.
I performed this piece when I was 14, in a youth orchestra. It was very difficult to play, but it became a comforting piece to listen to. Tchaikovsky to me, is a pinnacle classical composer for the period. ❤
I believe you can tell within the 1st few seconds how well a group will play this piece...unlike a lot of groups, this one had an A+ sound right away...well done...
I loved it, but I still feel that 2 more cellos and 1 more bass would have balanced it out. Seems top heavy on higher string level. There is a richness of bass in this composition that is not heard here.
This group is great, but, respectfully, I prefer Herbert von Karajan's version. As far as I can tell, just by listening and noting that von Karajan is a conductor of, in this case, a string orchestra, his version has a fuller, deeper quality than this chamber group. Tchaikovsky's Serenade COMMANDS that fuller, deeper quality. Respectfully, I thank you.
Out of many recordings of Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings, this one has the most romantic and passionate phrasing. It's slow at the right places, upbeat at the most appropriate timing and just magnificent to listen to. The audience were really lucky to listen to this wonderful rendition in person!!!
As far as recordings go, I agree completely! But for recreating how the composer intended this piece to sound, the venue has to be considered as part of the overall acoustics. This sets the tempo and pacing, depending on how long the hall reverberates. Since this piece wasn't intended to be a full orchestral performance in a concert hall, but within some palacial hall with tapestries, paintings and gold guilding. The group has to take time to let the hall quiet down before returning to the music (pacing), and it also can overwhelm the recording making everything layer over each other and not give much detail. Give this performance a listen in St. Petersburg, Russia: ua-cam.com/video/PAeXRJtxbrQ/v-deo.html Quite a different sound indeed! ;^)

"A Night on Bald Mountain", also from a Big 5, is close. "Sheredaze Op.35" is another really close one. Nothing is the same as the feels from this one.
Glorious music. Tchaikovsky wrote this as a penance for the 1812 overture, which he described as 'loud and noisy'. This is utterly sublime. Thank you for the performance and the upload.
I've always found it fascinating that he wrote them at the same time. This one really does feel like he's trying hard to show what he sounds like when he's being true to himself.
Tchaikovsky asked for the greatest number of string players possible for this piece, but I honestly think this serenade works much better as a chamber piece as it's presented here. Marvelous sound!
That's ambitious for any high school orchestra. The music is really transparent, which is to say that any mistakes are truly obvious. I think school orchestras have improved a lot from 50 years ago. So, congratulations.
I adore this piece. Never heard it played so sublimely. This is masterful, celestial, the pace, the dynamics, and the soulfulness -- it is heart-breaking. Bravi !!
Maybe the best rendition I have heard of this sublime piece. The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the top five orchestras in the world in my opinion.
@@demi3115 Yes I know but the Chamber Orchestra is an integral part of the Concertgebouworkest. The NPO provides wind instruments or other instruments when needed. The Chamber Orchestra also crosses over to the NPO when needed. My original comment still applies both are world class!
Yet another brilliant Dutch chamber orchestra. Congratulations Holland. This performance gave the cello, in particular, its rightful space and voice better than many, for once. Lovely Cathy Jones
I've got a real soft spot for cyclical works, the fact that that powerfull string opening, full of hope, comes back after all those bars of music somehow makes it even more powerfull and deeply moving...
I first heard this piece in the early '70s when I saw the New York City Ballet perform to this piece!! I was blown away by both the music and the ballet! It's a stirring piece! (and the ballet is wonderful!!!).
The piece to me still remains probably one of the best ways for an ear to begin to hear something like 18th century classiscal-whether its Dvorak, Tchaikovsky or basically any other composer.. For young people this can be a ticket to the rest, it was for me back in my teens in the 1970's.. It allows your ears to adjust to completely different music, the high emphasis on melody enhances it. Play it for your children and they will likely love it.
This was basically a passion project he did while working on the 1812 Overture, which was a commission. He definitely enjoyed writing it, and I agree that you can hear that in the music.
@@nathanboecker9318 Good to know! He also wrote in one of his letters, that he found the 1812 Overture to be too loud for his taste. I for myself thought so, too. Despite that, 1812 Overture is still a masterpiece! Greetings Nathan!

This is as good as it gets ......it is also my very humble opinion that this - and the Antonin Dvorak Serenade for Strings - are better suited to a chamber orchestra as opposed to a full orchestra where individuality seems to get lost .....I'm no expert - but I know what I like ....
I absolutely love 10:35 - 14:17. Favorite part! Such a lovely waltz, so satisfying. I look at the audience and they're all sitting there like statues, not moving a muscle. I know I'd be swaying back and forth with the music or moving my head or something, geez! Music like that is felt in the soul. Thank you incredible orchestra and thank you, Tchaikovsky! Well done.
