  • The Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, led by conductor Slobodeniouk, performed the fairytale like Fantasy Ouverture 'Romeo and Juliet' by Tchaikovsky in the AVROTROS Friday Concert of Friday the 16th of November 2018. Tchaikovsky loved Shakespeare and used his writings as inspiration for his own compositions. 'Romeo and Juliet' is styled as a Fantasy Overture, but is actually a symphonic poem in sonata form.
    The musical program:
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky - Fantasy Overture 'Romeo and Juliet', TH 42, ČW 39
    Musicians:
    The Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra
    Dima Slobodeniouk [conductor]
Recording: The AVROTROS Friday Concert of Friday the 16th of November 2018 in concerthall TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht.

    Superhuman multitasking.
    Simultaneously:
    reading the score,
keeping an eye on the conductor,
listening to the other musicians and blending properly,
being aware of one's own pitch,
remembering the conductor's notes from rehearsals.

Okay, I just cried. The whole piece is exhilarating but that ending.... the funeral march, then the eulogy in the woodwinds rising to heavenly song and then those sharp arrhythmic chords. This is not a poem, it is an epic.

I know the main love theme is amazing in this piece. However, am I the only one that is completely in love with the entire introduction of this work? Tchaikovsky's use of counterpoint and dissonance is seamless. I would argue that his biggest flex in this entire work his ability to manipulate the voicings in different ways to resolve to the same E minor a couple of times. 3:08 - 3:50. SO AMAZING geez

I wonder what made Tchaikocsky come up with the perfect sound for 13:15. It's like the low melody right before entering that high pitch violins was just perfect timing. He couldn't have done a better job. Schools should REQUIRE to listen to all the great composers. It is a shame that people arent introduced to this music until college. It should be a requirement that kids listen to this every day before nap time, and have high schoolers write papers on it.
