    Portrait is great when you're using a map in track up mode, because it allows you to "see" further ahead than landscape does. Landscape show you more of what's off to the sides, and less of what out ahead of you.

  • @burrito-town
    @burrito-town 2 роки тому +27

    Why in the world would you use the sat nav in landscape??? The direction you are traveling is in front of you, not off to your left and right. Portrait mode lets you see more of the map in the direction you are traveling. Landscape mode only gives you the width of your phone to see the map in front of you. Using landscape mode to navigate makes no sense.

      I get this fully. And personally I'm torn between the 2.
      In a car I find it much easier to be in Portrait. But for some reason, I find it more comfortable on my motorbike in landscape. It's stupid, I know.

    @1:44 when you drive you want to see far ahead and not more on the left or right. I don't understand why you would have you navigation horizontal. maybe it depends on the app you're using and if you use it in 2D or 3D mode

    I've been using Quad Lock mounts for a couple of years now, and I love them. It replaced my TomTom Rider, which I never got along with. They're fitted to my Street Triple, mountainbike and also to my road bike. Their cases are excellent as well. I tend to drop my iPhone quite a lot, and it is still without a scratch. Yes, they're pricey but you do really get what you pay for. Rock solid stuff.
    Oh, and I like to run it in portrait mode as well. Especially while using Waze, you can see further ahead.

    Nice one Bob. It’s a fantastic complete system the I have been using on more bikes than I can remember. It’s an Australian invention and although I’m a proud Australian, I’d still buy them regardless. Made and designed by a group of motorbike enthusiasts, for what is required. 👍😎🇦🇺

    Interesting fact about the aluminum 'pro' version - it transfers exponentially more sharp and damaging vibration and shock to your phone than the plastic version, which attenuates vibration and shock.

    • @eizlan48
      @eizlan48 10 місяців тому

      That’s why you need the quad lock vibration dampener as well.

    • @davidwalker6960
      @davidwalker6960 10 місяців тому

      But is also weaker and I've seen pics and posts where the nylon ripped and the phone fell off. So I went with the stronger version not made from nylon. (And it's nylon, not plastic).
      Also, the phone sleeve itself is rubber/plastic and I've had no issues with vibration.
      I suppose If you're going off-road *so* much that you're vibrating it to the point that you're actually vibrating your ass off, possibly get the vibration dampener instead of going with the cheaper construction?

    Vertical phone: mainly because the smaller iPhones still show the Lock Screen notifications vertically even if the phone is horizontal. If I’m not using nav I want to be able to see my notifications right way up. Also prefer nav vertically as well to see further ahead

    I've been looking for a new mount for my phone and settled on this one. Just ordered the case, the mount pro for motorbike, the vibration dampener, and also a window car mount as I have to travel for work and don't always use my bike to do that (damn UK weather!). Thank you for the discount :)
    I may get the wireless charger in the near future but, as you say, it is an expensive kit to build up.
    Also, I like portrait for nav as you get more screen to see ahead, but my phone is big enough that landscape works fine too!

    I agree with the beeline, on my retro bike that is the route i'd go if I was looking for that. I do own the quad lock and it's worked well, I've taken it off the R1250gs. I want less distractions while i ride at the moment. But that is my personal preference. If i was traveling long distance on a cross Canada trip, I'd likely put the quad lock backk one.

    Important warning about wireless chargers in general. They are less efficient than wired charging, using about 50% more. This loss is in heat, which can cause your device/charger to overheat and prevent further charging. So on a hot day in France 30C+ my wireless charger stopped working when the navigation was on etc... Had to pull over somewhere cool and turn off the screen to let it charge up :(

    Portrait for me, I want to see as far down the road as possible! Undoubted quality, but adds up to a fair old wedge doesn’t it. Beeline looks nice but can react a bit too slow sometimes and then you get stuck in a spin as it tries to reroute.... good but not as good as a map IMO.

    I've been seriously considering a Quad Lock Pro mount. I recently installed a Cardo bluetooth system in my helmet and use it to receive turn-by-turn navigation directions via an app in my phone (which I carry in my pocket), but would really like to be able to have the visual guidance of the maps on my phone. I have a 2020 T120 and had previously considered the BeeLine Moto, because of it's simplicity and sleek appearance, but it doesn't give turn-by-turn directions, so I'm thinking the Quad Lock for my phone is perhaps the best option. What are you thoughts? Signed, "confused in Canada"!

      Come on, this is a completely normal use case. This is exactly how I use the QuadLock wireless charger on my CRF1100L on short/everyday rides, with frequent stops. I just don't want to deal with plugging/unplugging wire, I don't need big screen navigation, but I still want a glanceable Waze map at all times.
      Of course, wireless CarPlay would be the best solution, but alas.

    • @SandisGrantins
      @SandisGrantins 2 роки тому +1

      BTW, on longer touring rides I do plug the wire and use TWO maps simultaneously. Normal navigation on the CarPlay display + overview map on the phone to have a better "large picture" geographic awareness (or a custom second map when riding offroad).

    Beauty about teh Quadlock is that you can use it wiht Waze, Google Maps, Sizapp, even Beeline all via the apps. Not as sleek or discreet as the Beeline moto but you have freedom to choose traffic congestion over minimalism. Both hae their places - for me Waze in the urban setting and Beeline in the more rural where congestion is less an issue.

    If You like something minimal on your bike, for a phone mounting, take a look at the "Peak Design mobile" It is smaller from the basic Quadlock and it comes standard with a vibration dampener. And above all it is the strongest mounting of all others (Quadlock, SP Connect)
    Only wireless charging is missing but my experience with the wireless charger of "Quadlock" was not the best either. A usb plug was not enough to charge my phone, although Quadlock phonecase and enough power supply on the USB plug. It was necessary the Waterproof 12V To USB Smart Adapter from "Quadlock". Another 35€ on the bill and more cables on the bike for a wireless charging.
    Still use the "poncho" and the waterproof USB C simple cable. They are good.

    I use the Quad Lock on my bike and it’s nicely made gear. I just wish I could leave the case on my phone permanently, but the bump on the back of the case makes the phone rock about if you’re trying to use it whilst it’s on a flat surface. I’d be happier for the case to be thicker but flat on the back. Other than that, I love how secure it feels when in use. This new “Pro” version is pricey though (not that the regular range is cheap!). Personally I’ll be sticking with the regular setup as I don’t really see any advantage with the pro.

    I use portrait, not because I like it, but because if the iPhone not at enough of an angle when you rotate it, it won't detect you turned it and will stay in portrait. And you can't lock the iPhone in landscape mode - because that would make too much sense. So if I put it on my mount and rotate it, the phone's landscape but the screen stays in portrait. The fix for this is to have the mount at an angle the phone will rotate the screen. But the angle where this kicks is makes it really hard to see the screen because the angle's bad.
    If I fiddle with it I can make it go into landscape, but it's never really consistently. And using the phone in landscape with the screen still in portrait is uh, bad.

Thankfully apple replaced my phone under warranty, but unless quadlock offer iPhone replacement free of charge as a result of their fixing kit I won’t be fixing my new iPhone to any motorcycle even with a vibration dampener…

      I have the same phone , and own a Harley and always feel those really vibrating bumpy roads around my area , what phone mount do you recommend instead ?

    Apparently, the Indian Challenger and maybe the air cooled motors have Apple car play and I'm guessing the Android equivalent 🇦🇺

    I honestly can’t stand trying to lock the phone into the cradle. I am sitting here dropping f bombs in the garage. If anyone has tips on making this simpler I would be grateful.
    Unfortunately on my FXD it seems like portrait is the only orientation that works due to the space between the speedometer and bar. Again, any suggestions are appreciated.
    Love the product but need to get comfortable with it.

    If I ever need anything from Quadlock, I wait to buy during Black Friday sales. 30% off. Bundles are stupid cheap.

    instead of using the wireless charger, just stuff a battery bank in your jacket and charge your phone via wire, you'll get faster charging and it generates less heat compared to using a wireless charger

    It should be a criminal offence to film or mount a phone in portrait orientation.
    Are there any real alternatives to Quadlock? The thing that swung it for me was their vibration dampener. I didn't get the wireless charging head as too many reviews said it was poor sorry crap, but everything else they do is good. I got several 360 degree ball heads as well meaning no restriction on positioning your phone in terms of angle to avoid glare/reflections. I bought all my Quadlock mounts, case etc on Black Friday last year. Glad I did as I saved a small fortune. Their products are not cheap even with a BF discount.

      Reg. horizontal position - why would you rather want to know what's left and right instead of what's ahead ?

    To me it's just weird having your phone on the side. Unless you're watching a video otherwise I prefer to have the phone. The right way up it's just preference and looks to me
