The bottom line is no one commenting on this video is in any place to criticize Mike or any drummer who has dedicated their WHOLE LIFE, hours upon endless hours, to become masters of their instrument. This video shows that even though Mike is an insanely technical player, he does indeed have huge amounts of soul and creativity. I swear some people can't get over the Dream Theater thing. Mangini deserves everything coming his way. God bless him
The mic-ing and drum tuning is sensational here. What a clean sound on all. I love the way he just toyed around in the very beginning, dashing and dotting... building up. His independence and astounding ambidextrous abilities are truly dazzling. I think that he is a tremendous artist.
this is amazing, it's hard to find a more creative and interesting drummer, he keeps just keeps you peeled and listening to everything he does. amazing, glad to have him in DT.
Man... He doesn't need any lessons. Mike Mangini is a brilliant musician with his own way of expressing himself. He enjoyed what he's doing as I enjoyed listening his mathematical way of interpreting the music.
Excellent.......hes never been short on ideas or concepts.........i love that he's made music here out of those ideas....orchestration of those ideas......the next level....CHEERS MIKE!!!!
Enough with the Portnoy vs. Mangini debate! I'm pretty sure both of these guys would be annoyed with the fact that people wont stop comparing them with each other. It's music, just listen and enjoy!
Al Varela >>> the question is .... does he play Portnoy's drum parts HIS way and stay true to the recording or did D.T. say to Mangini ''play it how YOU think it should played and just kick ass''?
Exactly... its a stupid debate. All members al DT chose and accepted HIM. And thats pretty much it. Both are EXCELLENT drummers and have their own style. To me Mangini is simply genius and awesome.
There was one interview portnoy was asked about mangini being in dream theater I recall watching here and yes he avoided the question even probably out of annoyance lol
It's hard to tell, but is he playing thirty-second notes with his hands while playing sixteenth note triplets with his feet? If so, that's insanely difficult, but he might just be hitting the bass drum in between each hit with his hands. Which, to be clear, is also insanely difficult.
Way more technical, way more creative and he has a real soulful and tasteful feel to what he does. He draws you into an experience that gets your mind and your guts involved. Good stuff.
I've come around to really like Mangini. He seems like a really nice person with excellent talent and I was wrong about saying portnoy should come back to DT. Mike portnoy had his chance and lost that. Although I do disagree with Avenged Sevenfold not keeping him in the band, I know it had to do with something he said in an interview and the band didn't like it. But let's be honest, the Rev would have wanted Portnoy to carry on his legacy. Since Portnoy was his favorite drummer. I think Portnoy got the raw end of the deal in the end.
Now this is a drum solo, the Master himself displaying that a drum solo can be extremely powerful with groove and doesn't have to be about doing all those 17 stroke rolls across the Kit. You up and comers watch this and learn, you experienced guys watch this and get back to basics. Happy drumming Guys
awesome solo i love how he keeps that smooth fluid motion throughout the solo. very cool. ps i dont know what ppl r saying about the snare sound, its kind of a basic snare sound. and it doesn't sound a lot like an export, its a ton woodier and phat.
What a great drummer...and I can say I knew about him before he joined DT lol. There's some really great stuff in this solo, it's too bad that the audio is screwed up.
I saw a promotional video for his low-volume practice setup where he casually mentioned practicing at seven-thirty in the morning without disturbing the neighbors. Let that sink in.
Mike Mangini is definitely part of my Top 5. Right now, I would say Chambers, Lang, Mayer and Chris Coleman. What's so great about all these musicians is that they could play every type of music naturally. How I'd love to hear Chambers's take on some Faith No More!!!! XD
did you ever hear Annihilator's album Metal? This is where I fell in love with Mike's drumming. Check out the songs Army of One and Operation Annihilation. I really miss him in Annihilator, one of my favorite bands of all time.
Anyone who says this is not a great solo is wrong. He is playing restrained and keeping it simple. If this is him keeping him simple then I am very happy he is part of Dream Theater.
I like this solo alot. Maybe it's because i'm a drummer, maybe because I like technically oriented stuff, but when I close my eyes and listen I hear a drummer's melodies.
This whole solo, especially from about 1:50 on, would work perfectly in Liquid Tension Experiment's "Chewbacca" from LTE2. Ironically, the drummer on that track? Mike Portnoy. Mr. Mangini's gonna be a perfect fit in DT.
Implicitely impressive;-) Incredible work on independence and controlled speed. Look! This guy is absolutely ambidextrous! When he played hats on the left with the left hand, he plays the left bass drum pedal, when he played hats on the right with the right hand, he plays the right bass pedal. Almost everything in this solo is impossible... Moreover it's much more melodic than a Peart/MP's solo.
@TimWaterson also to mention that MIKE has studied how the human brain and body work together and wrote an educational book series "rhythm knowledge". This man is my hero. Joey "chopzmasta"
i honestly think even though its creative and unique, mangini's setup is one of the greatest limiters on how he can play and sound musically! look at guys with more natural setups and you will see that they can do so much more because its all easier to get to! eric moore, thomas lang, dave weckl, jojo mayer, gavin harrison, matt garstka, etc
@polke14 i take it you didnt notice how he was playing epically left handed statsu at one part, or that epic groove thing at around 214, hes got that rediculous fill goin on, and soloin over it with the bass drums? i mean try to play that and id be damn impressed
When a drummer makes a guitarist totally mesmerised to UA-cam all his playing you know he’s special.
You know a drummer is amazing when he literally trained himself to be 100% ambidextrous just for the hell of it
Simon Phillips trained himself to play open handed because he wanted his four rack toms to be placed at the same height because it looked cooler.
Man,I love his symmetry. And switching a groove from your left foot/left hand and back is hard as hell.Kudos,Mike!
I love how this solo wasn't just in your face "look how fast I can play" it had feel and nice rhythm to it
The bottom line is no one commenting on this video is in any place to criticize Mike or any drummer who has dedicated their WHOLE LIFE, hours upon endless hours, to become masters of their instrument. Who says Mike can't groove? God I love the Genie.
Mike Mangini is INCREDIBLE!! Love his use of dynamics in solos, and his hi hat work is unreal.
what????
mike's solo was just beautiful.. very well organized and executed perfectly.
i´ll have to disagree with you 100 %
the guy is a genious!!!
Only a true drummer would have put it so well!!! Way to go!!
I like that he's composing and not just shredding. The lights are on and someone is clearly home.
I can't help but smile at how awesome this is.
Professor Mike Mangine has done it again! Pure genious
Awesome! He's so technically and melodically rich. Very nice video. Just wanted to watch more of him!
The mic-ing and drum tuning is sensational here. What a clean sound on all. I love the way he just toyed around in the very beginning, dashing and dotting... building up. His independence and astounding ambidextrous abilities are truly dazzling. I think that he is a tremendous artist.
It is fucking amazing how Mangini plays so smoothly... And so well.
Watching Mike play just recharges my inspiration and desire to play more and more everyday. Thanks for the upload!
I love this solo ... Mike gets better and better. It's dynamic, tasteful and tells a story.
Nice to see and hear such a musical solo from a guy who often gets shredded for not being musical in his playing.
You’re thinking or portnoy. Mangini is a musical genius.
a very tasteful and musical solo, much enjoyed....looking forward to dream theaters next album
That's the snare sound DT need in their music.
MIKE MANGINI + DT = Great New Music
Best Drummer 👍🥁❤🥁👍
His set sounds....so good. Like...oh man, so good.
this is amazing, it's hard to find a more creative and interesting drummer, he keeps just keeps you peeled and listening to everything he does. amazing, glad to have him in DT.
great drum solo, God bless mike mangini
I love way he hits his cymbals too. .best blend of hat sounds.
i really enjoy this guys playing :)
Man... He doesn't need any lessons. Mike Mangini is a brilliant musician with his own way of expressing himself. He enjoyed what he's doing as I enjoyed listening his mathematical way of interpreting the music.
youve just got to love the symmetry of the drums
Very interesting setup with that snare above main snare :P And the tom configuration can make up for quite unique fills too
the drum panning makes this twice as cool
Excellent.......hes never been short on ideas or concepts.........i love that he's made music here out of those ideas....orchestration of those ideas......the next level....CHEERS MIKE!!!!

+Jerome Silva from what DT has said, he plays Portnoy's parts but accents different things and they love it.
Mangini!!!
There was one interview portnoy was asked about mangini being in dream theater I recall watching here and yes he avoided the question even probably out of annoyance lol
that kit sounds beautiful!
congrats hope you carry on my fav band
hes one of the most disciplined drummers ive seen!!! so glad they chose him
just when u thought u seen eveything on youtube, thats what i love about this sight, great videos.
I'll never forget the solo I saw him do with Extreme in 1995. Blew me away.
It's hard to tell, but is he playing thirty-second notes with his hands while playing sixteenth note triplets with his feet? If so, that's insanely difficult, but he might just be hitting the bass drum in between each hit with his hands.

Incredible chops, and also incredibly musical. I'm having a lot of fun working on some of this stuff.
Damn. That was musical. Beautiful dynamics from start to finish. Technical but heartfelt. I listened/watched several times. That never happens.
In my opinion, this is Mike's best drum solo BY FAR! Even much better than the legendary solo from Steve Vai's tour.
I must say I am totally amazed.
The stuff he's doing around 2:20 is delicious. Not only is he an incredibly skilled drummer, but he plays beautiful music with his instrument.
Definitely! He grooves that Gadd-esque lick at 1:20 and a few other times so well from both sides. incredible.
This is pure rythm mastery. Awesome.
very very good mike...im like it
I like his creativity.
i love how his kits set up it seem so feng shui, so abstract, so .... i'd love to tear that shit up basically
oh man - nice cymbals /Hats!!!
Unparalleled touch and control.
Amazing skill.
This is musical. Period. Those who disagree are not really listening...
Amazing!
he's the first drummer i see with a visually symmetrical drumkit
i got high expectations of him in DT
awesome solo i love how he keeps that smooth fluid motion throughout the solo. very cool.
ps i dont know what ppl r saying about the snare sound, its kind of a basic snare sound. and it doesn't sound a lot like an export, its a ton woodier and phat.
reading your post sprained my brain. goodness man...
his finesse is amazing!!!
What a great drummer...and I can say I knew about him before he joined DT lol. There's some really great stuff in this solo, it's too bad that the audio is screwed up.

+ade fawgy Man-genius!

@Evosimpai: MIke Portnoy has left Dream theater a few months ago. Mangini has auditioned for DT and there are rumors that say he's been chosen.
This is amazing technically but also has some cool musical ideas and progression going on at the same time. Mangini is quite the musician.
I love this guy! ...lol he is great!!! 5*
@notlekrut
damn right, this guy is simply amazing
Anyone who says this is not a great solo is wrong. He is playing restrained and keeping it simple. If this is him keeping him simple then I am very happy he is part of Dream Theater.
I love the sound of his
crazy drumset! :D
Wow
Mind = Blown
GREAT!!! I NOT BELIEVE!!!GOOD TECHNICAL!!!
I like this solo alot. Maybe it's because i'm a drummer, maybe because I like technically oriented stuff, but when I close my eyes and listen I hear a drummer's melodies.
awesome kit! i like this concept of use two hands as equal
this man is a fucking wizard... im glad hes in DT now because people are starting to recognize his skills
Welcome to the DT family Mr. Mangini.
Believe it or not, this is only ok for Mangini. Check out Dream Theater, Live at Luna Park's drum solo.
Very, very interesting setup. I like it. Leaves plenty of room to be ambidextrous, which all real elite drummers are. *High five!
great toms sound
he´s awesome!
@DiabolusEnGuitar so good that this guy set a speed drumming record!!!
Mangini loves hihats so much xD
I never realised Mangini had such a good sense of groove - almost Harrison like in this video, very nice indeed.
I completely agree with ChaiVat. I am also a guitarist and I love watching Him! He is fantastic
@nenissaK he didnt even write the drums for the album. petrucci did, and mangini recorded them. the next album will have ridiculously amazing drums
This whole solo, especially from about 1:50 on, would work perfectly in Liquid Tension Experiment's "Chewbacca" from LTE2. Ironically, the drummer on that track? Mike Portnoy.

Beautiful! Drums sounds really good @dt Jesus
beautiful !
@TimWaterson also to mention that MIKE has studied how the human brain and body work together and wrote an educational book series "rhythm knowledge".
This man is my hero.
Joey "chopzmasta"
che classe che ha quest'uomo ....
woooooooow :o amazing...
I wonder if there's a reason for switching from right to left footed, or if it's...just for kicks. :P
I think because He can hahah
Mike Mangini is the King of Drums..amazing..do the same and you're the king..fastest fucking hands in the world and there is no substitute..
Such control of power... all while playing at god level speed...
never seen anyone accent the bass drums while doin a steady rythem on the toms.Very cool and original
i honestly think even though its creative and unique, mangini's setup is one of the greatest limiters on how he can play and sound musically! look at guys with more natural setups and you will see that they can do so much more because its all easier to get to! eric moore, thomas lang, dave weckl, jojo mayer, gavin harrison, matt garstka, etc
I agree with DRUMMERON, probably Mangini can play well what was already done, but is Mike good enough for write new material and records?
@polke14 i take it you didnt notice how he was playing epically left handed statsu at one part, or that epic groove thing at around 214, hes got that rediculous fill goin on, and soloin over it with the bass drums? i mean try to play that and id be damn impressed
