Matt is my Mentor and I can honestly say his lessons have been an absolute game changer for me! I've been playing for 10+ years and always struggled with accuracy and speed around the kit and since working with him on a 1-1 basis my playing has come on leaps and bounds! Keep up the good work dude this lesson is awesome!!!! Love ya Broski! (It's Tony btw 😂)
This is really helpful. I'm teaching a student right now who is getting confused with that usual way of approach. I'm going to try this with her at the next lesson! Oh, and could I get that doubles cheat sheet?
The purpose for learning the Free/Full stroke is to allow the student to understand the full rotation... the "plain" if you will, of the stick. The 4 basic strokes need to be understood and practiced slowly so that one can understand the physics and feel them in the hands. Similar to the double strokes where you pull the second double out. Joe Morello's book Master Studies I addresses these issues and strokes. It's not the whole equation but it's an important one.
Great video - I’d call your attention to 7:37, where your hand looks pretty much the way I strive to make mine look when I’m doing doubles. I don’t draw a distinction between doubles and drop catch at the beginning, because I think it’s about energy management. But I would give students the very advice you caution against at the beginning as a means to get their hands doing what yours are at 7:37. With all due respect, it looks like you’re dropping the wrist below the axis of the forearm - which is no criticism because I think this is a Good thing - because your hand can feel how much energy is needed to put into the stick to get an even bounce back. I agree that once you’re specifically working on doubles as independent from push pull, you need less energy, so the “drop” wrist motion can be more attenuated. The other difference in our approach is I don’t emphasize fingers at all, because one of my first teachers over emphasized fingers and that caused me to “force” the stroke by pinching it, instead of working with the energy of the stick. I’ve seen many students get caught in similar quagmires, and I wonder if simply practicing singles is an easier way to get students to incorporate the fingers without overemphasizing them. I like the approach you do leading up to 7:37, and the sound you get with your doubles, so I think it’s just about different coaching cues getting out students to a similar place.
Great video, Matt! I have got caught up too much in spreading myself to thin on the drums. I am trying to master too many things while trying to learn songs for gigging in the blues and blues rock band I am in. Time to wind things back so I can improve what I need for the current music I am playing and once that is to my liking, then commence one other thing to master/get better at, one at a time without other parts of my playing suffering.
It's easy as a working drummer to get bogged down with the material we need to play for sure. The great thing about technique just like time is it has a big bang that benefits everything, so it's a great thing to spend time on. Let me know how it all goes for you. 😁
You have phenomenal skill and teaching ability! This lesson connected with me. I look forward to seeing what else you demonstrate, definitely subscribed. Thank you
Hi Matt. Excellent video. I have some suspicions about my second finger fulcrum on my right hand so would love the doubles cheat sheet please. many Thanks
You got it. Drop me a quick email at matt@infinitydrumming.com and I'll get that doubles cheat sheet over to you. If you want some feedback, drop me a short video of you playing doubles too. 😊
Inspiring and great lesson. Wow. I’ve still got my syncopation book my dad bought me in the early 70’s. Same book as yours. My teacher then had me doing some exercises which may have limited my learning. Like , holding coins against the stick with my fingers. To make sure my grip was always firm. I always used heavy 5C sticks. Now having better success with lighter sticks. Just need to unlearn my bad grip habit . Thanks man
There are alot of methods that can actually make things harder rather than easier. It's important to stay as loose as possible with the grip while maintaining accurate control of the direction the stick. One cool tip, on those days you find your hand are dry or cold, use Mr Zogg's stick wax to create some tackiness, so you don't have to grip the sticks too hard to maintain control. 😁
Thanks Paul! If you want some feedback on your application of the lesson, drop me an email at matt@infinitydrumming.com with a video of you playing doubles, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Happy drumming.
I feel like some teachers create the 'point to the ceiling' style methods just so they can push out another video. This however was bullshit free and to the point. Thanks
Thanks for subscribing. More to come. How would you feel about a video breaking down bass drum doubles? 😊 Syncopation is a great resource. I have another way of using syncopation page 38-45. I'll have to drop that sometime. 😁
@@alwilliams1997 thanks for the request. I will line that up! Keep an eye out for it! Not surprisingly I have taught this alot, but did you want to give me some more info on what specifically you wanted to learn and what you are having challenges with on thd topic of paradiddles and dynamic control? And can I ask if you have studied Moeller before? Then I can be even more specific in the video I create around this topic to help you specifically as a thanks for making this request. Requests help me make the channel as relevant as possible, so I really appreciate them.
@infinitydrumming hi m8. Yes I use moeller. I'm looking to get tips on increasing relaxation at 130 bpm plus and tips on stick height as tempo increases
@@alwilliams1997 gotchya. So to confirm, are you saying that you want to know more about the nuances of navigating increasing tempo while maintaining clean ghost notes in paradiddles using moeller?
Man your approach is so good. I’m having problems with ghost notes landing quietly and smooth after a good back beat. Toto Rosanna sounds horrible after I land the Back beat landing the ghost note on the snare doesn’t sound smooth enough
Thanks Craig. This is a common issue you are facing. I could do a little video on this. But if you are open to it, I'd be happy to get you in for a free 30 minute session and I'll show you exactly how to solve that with around 5 practise sessions of 20 mins.
1st off I play traditional grip with the left hand. I have a good double stroke roll. Clean and even. My problem with doing the push pull is I cant seem to get the speed I would like.
Thanks for sharing! I can do a video on speed development in the future. Or if you want to chat with me directly about this... Drop me an email at matt@infinitydrumming.com
Matt, that was great and a much better way to explain and teach the double stroke roll. You need to post more content. I’ve always struggled to get a double as clean as you have it down. So I’ll work on this lesson. A double cheat sheet you say? I’d be interested in that. And maybe, break down that double stroke solo you did at the ending. Basically the transition from the roll to the toms and back again so smoothly. 👍
Thanks for the kind words. Happy to send you over the cheat sheet and do a personalised video breaking down how to build up your orchestrations. Drop me a quick email at matt@infinitydrumming.com and I'll get that doubles cheat sheet over to you.
Great . This is exactly why Tommy Igoe doesn’t talk about upstrokes . If you bully the first note you get “ the lawnmower roll “ I love this stuff but even Gordy Knutson who uses graphs & that stuff has said if you can do a double stroke well you’re utilising push pull . I find my former biggest flaw was not being loose enough & letting the sticks do the work . Sorry I don’t think improving facility happens with dedicated and regular practice but perhaps wisdom does .
Hey Matt, I found this video very helpful... "liked" and "subscribed" If you could point me towards your "Double Cheat sheet" document I would appreciate it.
Thanks so much for liking, subscribing, and commenting! Sure thing, drop me an email at matt@infinitydrumming.com, and I'll get that straight over to you! I'll send you a full video breaking the cheatsheet down too.
I understand your frustration. The two things that help are focusing on perfecting your motion slow and spending 5 mins every day going slow to fast and doing sprints and jogs. Additionally bursting with subdivisions helps a ton. You have to modify the technique as you speed up. As I mentioned things like moving towards the finger tips for example at lower dynamics etc. I will do a video on this soon here. But if you want further help, reach out to me at matt@infinitydrumming.com
Not at all. I teach that you need Moeller to do it. However, the double whip has a specific emphasis on the second stroke not present in the classic Moeller motion.
