If she and her husband are smart, he’ll stay in the military and she’ll keep working and investing. Even with kids, she should work part-time just to max out her retirement accounts. She always pays her credit card on time. Even if she makes questionable decisions sometimes, her overall thinking with money is disciplined and responsible and so as long as she keeps that up she can pretty easily avoid the traps other people on this show fall into and avoid any terrible situation. As long as she builds the habit of saving to have an emergency fund and saving for retirement she should be set for a safe situation, especially if she can continue to increase her income.

If the could live on base housing, I’d recommend that since the housing allowance they give to Active Duty isn’t covering the high rents in those areas. Good luck to them! @awdrifter3394 While it's a bad debt, you can tell the bad part of it was a mistake instead of indulgence.
She paid too much because the dealership B.S.'d her based on her already approved loan. She also made the loan time way too long. That sucks, but she's young, and that can happen. Meanwhile, she wanted to put 8k down and got a semi decent interest rate considering she is young and this is probably her first real debt. Considering how many people on this show buy pretty stupid vehicles, I give her extra credit that she was buying a Corolla with the mindset that she wants it to last her a long time.

I agree, his score was egregiously low this time. A lot of people who work higher paying jobs than her don’t start until 22-24, depending on when they might finish college, but should those people get a 0 for retirement because they’re a month in to their careers and only have contributed a few hundred to their portfolio? Really doesn’t make sense and his score was very low.
His expenditure score of a 0 was also too low. She was literally spending exactly at the 30 in the 50-30-20 rule, so her “BS” spending was not egregious. He only gave her a 0 because she had just a few thousand in savings to act as an E-fund, but if not having an E-fund means you get a 0 for spending then you get two zeros effectively, and defeats the purpose of the spending category.
The real estate category makes no sense because it is beyond difficult to own a home at 22 unless you inherit a ton of wealth. So you naturally immediately get a 0 for real estate and his score seems to be that you can get a 10 in real estate if you have rental properties which sounds great for a real estate score but for an overall score not so much since not everyone wants to be a landlord.

That's what my husband and I are doing this year (I'm lucky in that my work actually offers the plot, but most likely it will be through local community rather than work). He gave her a far too low Hammer score. She spends on unecessary stuff, but generally lives within her means. Other than the car purchase- and compared to most of the folks on this show who buy $40k SUV's while drowning in debt, her Corolla purhase isn't insane. She even manages to put small amounts into retirement and savings. It's crazy to gave her a zero for that. The zeros should be reserved for those who wildly spend and continue stack new debt upon their existing debt. I'd give her a 3 at least.

Caleb, I used to look at my spending and say 'Ok self you spent $700 this month on bullshit. That's spending $23,100 of future you's money.'
After looking at it this way, I really thought twice about spending every dollar since it's worth $33 in retirement age... In my 20s it was anyway. Now I'm an old fart.. although a rich fart who can live comfortably.

People have no idea seriously. I work at a major children's hospital and these kids' 🫁 are jacked up. The weird part is that a group of kids can vape the same amount together all the time and one kid will get severe lung disease and the others won't. We just have no idea why certain kids are dying and others are just fine after smoking the same exact stuff 😮.

@@bko2613 I remembered when it had just taken off, I was a bit out of highschool, and a 17 year old friend of mine was getting big into it. I tried warning him but he wouldn't listen. Fast forward a few years and he feels his lung capacity has permanently decreased. Worst part is he got his younger brother into it and now he regrets it big time as his brother refuses to give it up.

Hey Caleb! I'd like to see more active duty military financial audits! The military offers a pretty unique financial situation for both the member and their spouse (i.e. moving, retirement pension, rank/years of service pay increases, etc.). I would be interested to get your take on how to optimize the constant uncertainty of where and what next. Thanks!

    • @CMac1121

You likely won’t see many active duty service members on this show if they have lots of debt because that can negatively affect their security clearance.

Interested in this too! Not all financial audits have to be negative with debt. Debt does play a role in security clearances, however, financial literacy does not.

why? @Caleb is clearly not familiar enough with military situation to be advising anything. He is ignorant of many things which directly impact Roy's finances, so it's cringeworthy to hear him provide advice on her budget and is harming Roy more than it is helping. There are universal basic fundamentals, but her situation is just beyond his scope of knowledge.
