The wife buying a $60k BMW against his advice is probably the exact reason they don’t have a joint checking account, and I don’t blame him.
This was my exact thought. And now he's stuck paying the payments for a car he was against from the beginning because she lost her job
Men are supposed to vet their wife's better BEFORE marriage.
That wasn't the first thing she's done against this man's advice.

it sounds like it was a vehicle for him to drive, she probably thought she was doing the right thing. i have an agreement with my wife in that when we don’t agree with a decision neither of us don’t do anything.

My boyfriend called while I was watching this to ask if he could take me out to dinner for our anniversary tonight… I said “do you have money to do this or will it be on your credit card because I don’t want to go out to eat if we can’t afford it right now.” He said yes he has the money for dinner and for getting gas to come get me and take me out so it’s not on credit and then HE THANKED ME FOR ASKING AND BEING CONSIDERATE ENOUGH TO CARE ABOUT HIS FINANCES. Thanks Caleb and everyone who goes on the audits for training my brain to think like this so I won’t end up like my parents 😊

This is something that I did to my parents years ago. I don't really enjoy getting gifts but I know when it's my parents a lot of times they put you on credit card that I know they probably can't afford. Durban times have told them to return a gift because I know they put on a credit card

It is a little refreshing to see people who own their decisions and obviously have trouble discussing all this stuff publicly; I think their situation and attitudes towards their financial situation resonates more with me than the typical "oh-I-spent-that-because-I-deserve-it" people who come on here.

After watching more recent videos where the person is arguing through the whole episode, this couple was so refreshing to watch - minimal explanations, no excuses, receptive to criticism. I love these two and really hope they are in a better place now

I definitely was there for the first few years of my career. Got my shit together, learned to look at my money, budget and every raise I got or negotiated I put 66-100% to savings. Never more than 33% to lifestyle creep.
I'm able to save 50% of what I make every month now and don't feel like I'm sacrificing anything in my life. Sleeping sound at night.

$1,149 monthly car payment for 6 years at 16% interest. Holy shit. The fact that a bank would even approve a loan like that is wild to me. She must have put zero money down and financed the entire cost of the vehicle. Talk about screwing your entire financial future with just one swift stroke of a pen.
So, the 16% tells us that she probably has dubious credit, at best. Which means....she shouldn't be anywhere near a BMW dealership. Period.

I wouldn’t assume too much. I’m a contractor precisely because these big companies don’t give two 💩s about you, and I’ve witnessed 3 layoffs in the last 11 years. People who had worked there for years and decades were let go just because the company wanted to save on real estate cost and consolidate offices, or just because the new leadership didn’t want to follow in the same direction as what’s been happening. Not all companies offer severance pay, btw, that’s something you negotiate going in. So don’t be shy about having these conversations when HR calls you with a job offer after the interview.
Caleb is the most consistent UA-camr. His massive growth is well deserved.

I started watching Caleb back in April and got a second job at Costco on top of my full time job and have paid off my 10k in debt (two private student loans, two credit cards and some miscellaneous debts)! I’ve also been able to build up my emergency fund to 4,500 and now focusing on my IRA and federal student loans.. it’s not easy working nearly 80 hours a week BUT it’s temporary and so damn rewarding! Thanks so much, Caleb!

I’ve heard it said “personal storage businesses are monuments tot he death of the American dream.” and this is a perfect example. People living in debt and small apartments wishing they had a garage or basement to keep expensive toys which they never actually get to use…
It's so crazy, people do this all the time. My parents had a storage unit they were paying 400 a month for and everything in there was worthless. They had it for years!!!!
@@youtubename7819 I think its more of a symptom than a problem. Storage units can be really useful for temporary living situations, moving, storing things for a deceased relative for a time, and many other situations. The problem comes in when you either can't afford it or use it as an excuse to buy things you can't afford and can't fit in your house, or store garbage instead of cleaning your house.
Fernando deserves so much praise after this audit. Abby took most of the responsibility for all the bs spending Caleb was pointing out and on top of that the budget going forward completely revolves around him being able to keep his high paying job for the next 3+ years even after they expressed they’re on their last legs with all the moving that comes with it. Their entire household is and has been on his shoulders and while it is very admirable of Abby to touch on her mental health and therapy, I feel Fernando deserves so much more respect and praise in this comment section.

Now I'm making over $80k and married with a house and kid to a wife who works part time. The more you have to keep track of in life the quicker it will get away from you. It's like financial whack-a-mole. You have to be very vigilant.

I REALLY want to see a follow up for this couple. I want to see them succeed so badly. I am just starting my journey with only $2,000 of debt and I felt like I was drowning before watching this. I feel like I can breathe now after seeing how much work they are going to have to put into digging themselves out of the hole that they are in.

You’ll get out of that in no time. My husband and I got out of debt a few years ago and let me tell you.. not having any debt is the best feeling. We use one credit card for everything and pay it off every month. We even pay all the bills we can on that card so that we can get 2% back on as much as possible. There are even some purchases that give us 3% back. We end up getting a few thousand dollars back every year and pay zero interest because we never carry a balance over to the next month. If you’re good with using credit cards and not over-spending, find yourself one that gets cash back (travel points if you’d rather do that). Just make sure you’re not carrying a balance from one month to the next so that you don’t ever have to pay interest. You’re already in a much better position than most people. Congratulations on that. And I know I’m just a stranger on the internet, but I’m proud of you for recognizing your situation for what it is before it got out of hand and for working towards fixing it. @@Rudy1150 If we believe her income estimate the $1100 BMW payment was her signing over 20% of her income away for 7 years. His truck payment was on the very high end of reasonable, but was pretty close to the 8% that advisors give, though at a longer term than recommended.
So people are more aghast at her car payment because it was almost triple the recommended income percentage for over double the recommended term while his is about at the max recommended income percentage for just under double the recommended term.
Are they both bad? Yes! But his is a reasonable percentage of his income. Hers is insane in every way.
That is the silver lining, yes there will be a loss on selling the car (maybe not too bad in this used car market), but man, having an "ok" car and taking that loss has got to be better than a $1k+ payment for 6 years. No car is worth that kind of financial strain.
This is one of the first episodes where I DESPERATELY want them to come back and have done better. A lot of the time people have such a terrible attitude about their own responsibilities and accountability that I find it difficult to sympathize when they end up not improving. But these guys? I truly hope for the best for them, they seem to really be willing to take advice and make changes for their family ❤

They have no savings, several collections, bunch of unexplained amazon and apple bills. And she claimed he doesn’t spend on himself. Something is not adding up.

@@Pupui89 not at all try to move 4 times in 6 months that is like 20k debt lol. Plus bmw and f150. That is like 100k. I worked with couple making 200-600k a lot they are broke and in debt. Money doesn’t fix or cause debt behavior does.
For the wife - the benefit of the show is this is a cautionary tale for people not this bad off, but also seeing a roadmap for how to get out of debt because YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE struggling with this.

I'm an impulse shopper and watching this show has helped my habit. so much. I went from a broke college kid to 6 figures overnight and the lifestyle creep was real. When I watch this video I see my mother in his wife, my mother does this the past 38 yrs they been together. She has shopping addiction and she swiped out everything we had to sell everything to settle payments. It is sad, I really hope this couple can go in family counsel and compromise half way. My mother doesnt give a damn, she lost me and my sister, she only have my dad she spend 3k 4k a month on credit and my dad makes $15hr. I wish my mother would open to therapy and turn herself around, her and my dad gonna be homeless soon bc he enabled her and let her run all over him. usually I get pissed at these in debt types but the humility and sadness in their eyes makes me feel for them. I can't imagine being 33 and being a 110K in debt

A comment on your advice to have a shared account:
While that’s an ultimate goal for couples; commitment, trust, responsibility.
For many of the couples that come to these episodes, they don’t trust their partners and rightfully so. I wouldnt ask someone to commit to marriage of they are truly not ready for it. In the same line asking to have a shared account will take more emotional and behavioral changes required by each partner.
The consequences of things going terrible on a joint account are far worse than working towards a joint account once the relationship and finances are stable.
I want to reassure this couple that these episodes help the viewers so much. Seeing people in situations similar, worse, and better than my own give me so much inspiration and motivation to continue chugging on. I appreciate their willingness and bravery coming on the show and being so vulnerable. You guys got this!

Proud of this couple for coming on. It's humbling to expose so many personal things to thousands of strangers, but they'll never know the people who sit at home and relate/are helped by this content. Fernando and Abby, if you're reading this, you've got this! Think of it like flipping a house. With each step you as a couple are remodeling your financial and relational home! Stay strong! Trust the process! It wasn't that long ago when you were 28 and when you guys hit 36 and you're debt free with a net worth of $100k it will be like a breath of fresh air. You guys got this!
Her not selling the BMW sits so absurdly wrong with me. He gets to keep buying her books, pay for her school, and pay off her luxury car she couldn’t afford when she bought it in the first place and he didn’t want her to buy. So so wrong. Once she gets a job and they pay off all the non-BMW debt they should reevaluate their budget so she bears more of the burden of that decision.
Moght be pretty hard to sell when she still owes $50k on the car and it’s only worth $25k tops.
The ironic thing is that a BMW is a status car, and now everyone she was trying to impress knows she couldn't really afford the BMW 🫠

A lot of people hold off on filing for unemployment too. FILE THAT INSTANTLY!. Your (ex) company paid for it already, you might as well use it even if it's only 2 weeks

In a year, with counseling and getting on the same page financially, y’all won’t recognize yourselves. As a couple 7 years out of a crazy situation in our marriage, I can say we don’t even know who those people were. Rooting for you both! 🎉❤
It hit me when she said she vouched for him being there for family when they need something. My dad was the same way. He was the oldest of 5 born in the depression so he took on a lot responsibility for the family. He didn’t meet my mom until he was 40 but up until then helped out numerous nieces and nephews when they needed it without question and without expecting to ever get any of back. But when he died (and he worked up until that day) none of them could even be bothered to help. Sometimes it doesn’t pay to be kind-hearted and help people, especially family.

Caleb, as someone who works at Public Storage(in a different state), you should both be grilling people hard about having storage because 95% of the time, anyone who stores longer than 6 months would've been better just selling and rebuying the items. And you should also stay skeptical and grill harder about the items they are storing, what size unit they have, and the details of the contract. Most people can sell if not downsize at least. And I think they vastly undersold the size of the unit they had. It likely was not just "Some items and a couple motorcycles"
yup. after 2yrs i pushed for my X to either him continue paying the storage and keep everything or we sell whatever sells and the rest bye bye. We was spending more money storing. had we moved back in together i prob would have wanted new look for our place anyways. So unless the plan is to store emporrary, great, but and nolonger than the value of your belongings.
God, I hate Public Storage. Worst experience ever a few months ago. I moved my stuff out after the month I (stupidly) prepaid for. And I say this as someone who used to work in self storage.

The fact she didn’t get severance from Apple was pretty telling. She was probably a low level employee that wasn’t doing a good job. If her husband was able to float most of the bills without her income means she probably wasn’t making much.

@@boydassistant6621 happens all the time. Sometimes companies need to reduce labor costs so they have mass firings. They usually give a severance package to avoid dealing with unemployment claims. Apple was willing to reimburse her MBA. If she was a good employee but they just needed to downsize, a 3 month severance is small potatoes. The fact they didn’t means they’re confident enough that if she were to file unemployment she wouldn’t get it with little effort on their end.
That’s a layoff, no? I was laid during the GFC. Got severance and unemployment. Getting fired for doing the company wrong is totally different and gets no severance or unemployment. That sounds more like what happened to her.
@@boydassistant6621 if you’re laid off there’s a chance the company wants to hire you back. This happens to a lot of seasonal workers. They’ll work for 8-9 months get laid off for 3 and come back. Sometimes companies know they aren’t going to hire the people back so they are “fired.” Instead of dealing with thousands of unemployment claims, bigger companies, especially like Apple, will just fire you and give you a severance so it’s done and over with because there wasn’t good grounds for firing. But if Apple had grounds for firing her, it has to be bad enough where they wouldn’t give her severance and will dispute her unemployment. I know it seems weird but big business handles stuff like this differently. Just had a friend get fired because there was a company merger and his equal position in the other company had like 10 years more experience so they kept him and fired my friend. They gave my friend a recommendation letter and 6 months of severance.
You can tell she is hurting from the financial situation but more so from losing her job. Hopefully she can make it and it was nice to see her cheer up near the end.

Those are expensive trucks that hold their value, so I'm sure she was going to buy a new(ish) one. She shouldn't even have a car though, she refuses to be employed or a good worker, and her "side hustles" don't make enough income to bother counting. She's also selling all of their technology that would give them an easier time budgeting and keeping track of debt.

I'm not trying to hate on Abby, I'm just very confused with things on her part. Why is she only applying to around 4 jobs a week when she knows and feels bad that Fernando is taking on all the bills and struggling hardcore. She claims she's willing to clean toilets but if she were applying to even minimum wage jobs, she'd have something by now. It's concerning that she wasn't willing to submit her own financial documents to take the first step to merge their finances. It worries me for their future when she isn't willing to make sacrifices. Fernando I feel is trying to take on the role of trying to provide and is not managing it well but doesn't know how to do better. I especially think it's difficult for him to manage things now when she has done at least the car loan behind his back. Abby's impulses could be a contributing factor to their financial situation. I think it's unfortunate that Fernando is having to forgo essentials like a haircut or new pants if he needs it due to their financial situation.
At the start I was thinking he was the issue, but the further in I got everything seemed to be coming back to things she didn't want to talk about.
By the end I'm pretty certain she has the, "My income is my money, and your income is our money" mindset. I also think she heard Caleb is very pro-therapy and was hoping he would pressure Fernando into couples counseling more than any financial advice. When that was being talked about seemed to be when she was most interested in the conversation.

I'm not a psychiatrist but I'm seeing what looks like money avoidant behaviors. Which is where money stresses you out, so you ignore your finances and you end up in a cycle where your finances get worse and worse as you ignore them. They seem like nice people, I hope they can turn it around.
This show helps me because I'm reminded 3x per week that I'm behind on retirement and that I don't want to die on the Walmart floor.
It's easy to live in the moment and forget about the future.
Abby - you have absolutely provided value to others! The idea of ending up in your situation scares me to death, not because it's hopeless but because it will take work to get out of. Whenever I start to get lax about my finances, these episodes remind me why I'm doing what I'm doing. You and everyone else who has been on the show has helped me catch myself before heading down a path I can't turn around!

I had a credit card in 1972 and charged xmas on it that year. It took 6 months to pay it off. My husband said, no more credit cards and we haven't had one since then. I use a debit card when I need too but no more credit. We have a hugh emergency fund and a half of a million dollars in our investments for retirement. We won't be dying on the walmart floor. All of our properties and 3 farms are paid for. We were the poorest people among our friends but it all worked out in our favor. I really enjoy Caleb!

The BMW purchase wasn't behind his back. He tried to talk her out of it *before* she bought it. So he knew. And she selfishly did it anyway.
Sneaking off to go get the car when he was at work because he said no is going behind his back. Legally he is responsible for that debt as well and she had no right to get a vehicle that equaled her total yearly income with a predatory interest rate.

It is a really bad idea to get financially involved with a significant other or even fiancé. So when you’re married it can take a while to wrap your head around it being the right call to merge your finances and I think that’s perfectly okay for that to be a slow process. Since merging your finances with a significant other is bad but not merging your finances with a spouse is more inconvenient (as long as your financial goals are the same). It’s hard to for from 0 to 60.

Notice how she uses the face of “taking responsibility” to convince Caleb that the debt and debt choices aren’t as bad as they seem, notice how she lies pathologically to be seen in a better light regarding credit card debt that went to collections, watch as she over praises Fernando because she knows the current power dynamic suites her better if she lives to leech off of him.

Honestly, context matters. For example, my husband and I have no debts and both save our own money. If him or me ever decide to buy a car, the other one can obviously discuss it, but I wouldn’t stop my spouse from spending his own available money on a car he wants to have and can afford. Neither of us would ever end up taking 16% loan on it though, that’s for sure, but it’s kind of not even up for discussion, we just both know better, by default.
I discovered Caleb’s show…binge watched it ever since. I thought I was making generally pretty good financial decision but after binging I increased my savings and 401k and cut down on spendings that are not really necessarily. Seriously this show should be mandatory for teenagers and up…so little emphasis on financial health in this country.

I’ve worked at the same company before; if you got fired from Apple, you had to have done something horrendous. It was almost impossible to get fired from there from my own experience.

She was probably working on school stuff during work hours and her productivity was in the shitter. She made it sound like working on her masters takes her as much time as a full time job. Some people take more time than others to study, so I doubt she did it all on her own time while working

Had to have features I shopped for new only when I bought my last Audi and looked at bmw and entry level basic was in the 40k new. So used 60k means either she was ripped off or was the top of the entry level.

It’s either she did something egregious or was a repeat offender. There has to be a valid reason to let go of an employee that has worked at the company for “6 years.”

I watched the show a couple months back and I was financially in a mess and nearly bankrupt. Watching these shows DEFINITELY inspired me to fix my spending habits and change my ways. It is a long journey but I have been sleeping better ever-since getting my accounts in order and become wiser with my money. I advise any friend or family to watch Caleb.

Hey Caleb, I just wanted to say that you have helped me out tremendously! Although I am just 17 years old, I discovered you this spring. I had a job and a car payment to my dad that sometimes I wasn’t able to make due to bullsh*t spending. After I continued to watch your videos I realized that I had to change. So I went over my bank spending and noticed that all of my money was going to food and stupid things and I only had $100 in my checking account. By watching your videos I was able to save over $2000 in my checking account and gonna move it over to SoFi when I turn 18 this fall. And I am able to make all my car payments to my dad. Along with this I was able to set up and start a successful, cash flow, business! I just wanted to say, if you see this comment, thank you so much for the help!! Planning on attending college next year for a degree I WILL USE!😂
For you to start all this at 17 is incredible. You’ll never end up in a hole that you’ll have to dig yourself out. I’m 32 and discovered Caleb this year and have been digging myself out of the hole I’ve been in my whole life. I was never taught anything about finances and I grew up in a house where everyone was always in massive debt. It was just normal. I learned from Caleb that it is not normal and I can be debt free. But you’ll never have to go through any of that because you started at the very young age of 17. Good for you

You’re starting at a great age. Make sure to take full advantage of an IRA. Lots of employers also have a 401K do matching as well. Want a new car or to save for a house? Start building a relationship with several credit unions, local or not. They offer great interest rates and will help you get the loans you’ll need. Invest in yourself and your future!

Man, I'm really shocked by your behaviour. You hated it when people bashed on your relationship--and how they repeatedly all pointed out that you are the problem in YOUR relationship, but now you're turning around and talking about other people's relationships.
I'm...truly and genuinely BLOW AWAY. Listen dude--people in glass houses should NOT throw stones. Mind you business and pay off your own debt and go to couples counseling before you start talking about other people.

I avoided labeling you with a diagnosis in my comments to you on your video, but this genuinely makes you seem like you have a personality disorder--and I don't mean ASD.
You are either a very unkind person, or you are creating rage-click-bate by misbehaving online. It is causing me to question the intention of Calebs videos and the community he is trying to create.
If you didn't learn how important it is to keep an open mind about others situations, about keeping your comments supportive and positive, about not judging people based on a short video, I don't think you are going to be able to take responsibility for you own role in the problems in your life.

I'm surprised she only applies for 4 jobs a week. I've applied to 5 a day minimum for months. Not only is that amount required by unemployment offices here, but the job market is insane, and there's always someone better than you or equally as good as you out there, so there's no time to rest. It is soul crushing, so I hope she finds strength and keeps pushing, being unemployed is awful.

As someone who has worked at Apple in management I can tell you in order to get fired, not laid off, from Apple it means you have to be a bad worker for a very long time. HR likes to cover their bases and it takes like 6 months of documentation. So she’s not telling the entire story of why she got fired, unless she just got into a fist fight at work.
She’s definitely hiding something, it’s makes no sense.

I agree with you. Apple will have security escort an individual out of the building for egregious behaviors (threatening coworkers, theft, drugs on the job, etc); otherwise, before firing someone, there is prior documentation to support this action. Normally, it is not possible to receive unemployment when fired by an employer, so that’s why she was hesitant to apply; however, during times of heavy layoffs, Apple tends to not fight with a fired individual who is filing for unemployment benefits.

I really like this couple and enjoyed their audit. I can understand her feeling guarded, this is a very sensitive subject for the world to see, but I agree with Caleb, it helps so many by learning along with them. We all got the wake up call and guidance that this couple received. I look forward to their update. They will do great!!!

A very specific benefit to viewers that she doesn’t seem to be thinking about or seeing: there are countless people out there considering financing a new expensive car. Any viewers in that position can see where she has ended up as a result and (hopefully) will start to really think about the impact that decision rather than the impulsive feeling of “I want the car”

Nah, people will still think that it can't happen to them. It's the side effect of optimism and a high in life to do something like that. There are those times in life when you feel like everything is finally going your way, and you cannot even comprehend that your quality of life would drop.
My partner and I watch these financial audits everyday together on our work lunch. Its been a great way to bring up our personal finances. Thanks to you we now have started a budget and are tackling debts now that we have an emergency fund saved too! Come march we will be out of debt!

They just seem like goodhearted people that have snowballed into insane lifestyle creep debt. This is the first couple I can think of where both individuals were honest about their shortcomings and were open to advice across the board. Really rooting for these guys and I think they will follow through!

Everyone makes mistakes this is a horrendous, awful mistake but firstly from her deminor AND litterally what she says she reconsides this is NOT the reason. She just wanted the car and it was incredibly stupid but doesn't make them evil by any means.
Especially as she is someone who has clearly had a significant mental health history who knows the exact reasoning behind the purchase but even very good people make terrible, brash, decisions all the time.
My ex girlfriend has bpd and did some highly destructive things (and obviously this is an extreme case) both to herself and me and her but she is one of the kindest people you'll ever meet. Not everything is about going after someone else, some things are just stupid monkey brained decisions that many people make on a frequent basis.
Plus she married a guy with a kid from a previous marriage and clear issues from it (not wanting to share accounts etc) and is vouching hard for them to go to therapy together. People don't do that when they don't care.
I've worked in tech for over 10 years and I've seen a lot of layoffs but very very few firings. It generally takes a lot to be let go from non sales roles... so I'm suspicious of this firing situation

It's true - they don't fire people in tech unless they have consistently bad performance or have done something that warrants immediate termination.
Who cares she is still suffering and has to pick up the pieces and find something else.
