Caleb, I wish you were a car guy. Nobody is making money on their garage restorations. He's delusional. Her having a 10 year old Mercedes is horrifying. That's a ticking time bomb. If you can't afford a new Mercedes, then you can't afford a used one. This applies to any luxury brand.
@@opuntina he's kinda right. Look at the price of actual luxury cars like Bentley, Rolls Royce etc. on the secondhand market and you'll see the difference. Mercedes aren't cheap, and they do make some high end cars. But they also make a lot of fairly mid-range offerings, and the value drops like a stone over the first three to five years. They're also just really common over here in Europe. Although I'm guessing they're quite a bit less common in the US, so maybe the brand still holds a bit more prestige over there.

The thing he was trying to say is this was not an optional purchase. Buying some non essential good justifying through Cashback is foolish. In the world that Caleb and his wife were pushing for, he still spends 100 on gas. 100 leaves his bank account and the net impact on his credit card statement is STILL the same. That means a decision to NOT use a credit card(in the case of an inelastic purchase) is strictly behavioral. There could be merit to that framing, but from a pure math standpoint, if a purchase is going to happen no matter what, it would be better to go through the cash back version.
But only if you then have the discipline to turn around and pay off the entire balance before the next cycle. He, and other poor choice people, spend it on the card and then also spend the bank account money, too. Then he doesn't have the money to pay off the balance. People who are intelligent and who have discipline can get cash back and not pay interest etc. People who come on this show aren't those people. He is not that person. @kennyhouse8662
No what he’s saying is cash back is cancelled out and even out weighed by the interest the card is accumulating. Dave Ramsay would be the one using your argument. Cash back can be good if you don’t let interest accrue and Caleb knows that
@@kennyhouse8662 this is only true if you DON’T HAVE A BALANCE ON THE CARD. If the card has a balance on it and you add to the balance that is ACCRUING INTEREST, going for the cashback is net negative. It’s literally worse than cash This is what Caleb was trying to explain that you (and the guest) don’t seem to understand - it’s not just about behavior, the math is against you.
No, he's saying that getting a penny back when spending a dollar is way less than the $10 you'll be charged for carrying a balance you haven't paid off. Cash back is for people with no balance.
Dude listens to Rogan (I do too) and hears all the comedians talk about struggling until they make it and I would bet everything I own he has said that to her multiple times

I love that mine loves cars but he’s also responsible with money. He can fix our car when it breaks down or needs maintenance, and he knows how things work. It’s a valuable skill. Liking cars doesn’t make you an irresponsible idiot
This is the problem with the old saying “money isn’t everything”. It (among so many other things) has brainwashed a generation into thinking they can’t have expectations of their partner.
I have a pair of $19 Bluetooth headphones... People think that you need expensive stuff like ear pods when they cant afford it. And they talk about it like it is the only option.

Do you like what you do? I am working an entry level accounting job but have considered pursuing a CPA to do similar work - interested to see if you have any recommendations
@CalebHammer I used to work for a major credit card company and you need to tell people (like this guy) that if you carry a balance and make a charge interest starts accruing IMMEDIATELY - you only get the interest free grace period if you have a zero balance and pay it off at the end of the month. So many people fail to understand this and it is all in the fine print of the T and Cs that no one reads.
Thanks for explaining this! I was mentally saying "grace period!" in my head at Caleb! I forgot you get dinged if you don't have a balance. This should really be a pinned comment. (But even if interest accrued on the purchase AFTER a grace period, Caleb is still correct that carrying the balance and accruing interest is still < buying crap.)
I’m shaking my head. I used to have these same type conversations with my now Ex husband. After many years of handling the money, except for a 1M house that was close to being paid off, no other consumer debt including three cars and substantial savings, his impulsiveness could stand it no more and his behavior turned to physical abuse with police and bail bondsmen becoming involved. He kept the house, bought me out and spent every $1 he could get his hands on. He is now deeply in debt with a $5K monthly mortgage. It took awhile to get stabilized, but I bought a small home with cash, paid my moving expenses, did some $$$ repairs on my home, working on getting my health repaired, invested the proceeds I received and planning a European vacation this Fall with the interest I’m earning on a high yield savings. Biggest misconception about credit card interest: If you are carrying a balance, you DO NOT get the 30 day grace period on interest. Every additional purchase you make on the card that already has a balance you’ve carried past the grace period accrues interest from day one of purchase until you pay off the balance in full. Please explain this to your guests because many people do not understand this. That is why he wasn’t getting how it wasn’t beneficial to him to not spend and get the “rewards”
Thank you! Commenting to boost this so more people can see it. Explaining interest math is a little confusing. Explaining that you are charged interest immediately on a purchase and it eats away any "cashback savings" before you get to the monthly due date makes more sense to me.
Isn't that how your supposed to raise your credit score though? I was taught by my parents to never get credit, that you end up losing money, so I never did. I don't have any debt but I have a low credit score despite a good income. Someone told me in order to raise my credit score, I have to take out credit and pay it slowly and not all at once. He thinks he’s winning when he pays off $25 in gas to avoid the interest but has an almost $6k balance accruing $67 a month in interest. Make it make sense.
The fact that it took him so long to understand what Caleb was saying is alarming. I’m still not convinced he understands that his method isn’t logical.
Logically speaking, it's better to use a cash back card than your bank card. Let's say he has $25 in his bank account and $1000 existing balance on his credit card. His two options at the station pump are to use his credit card and his bank card. If he uses his bank card, the bank account balance goes to $0 and the cc existing balance accrues on $1000 at the end of the cycle. If he uses his credit card, he still has $25 in his bank account and his cc existing balance goes to $1025. He then uses the $25 in his bank account to pay down the $1025 by the end of the cycle. Net net in those 2 accounts, he ends up with $0 bank account balance and $1000 existing balance. HOWEVER, he has made 5% cash back on his $25 purchase and accrued interest (albeit very small) on his $25 bank account balance.
That only makes sense if a person isnt stupid, has self control, and makes money to pay their bills with. This dude is none of these. That is actually not bad if he was putting in real hours at a day job and is making upward progress year after year. 99% of people that attempt any sort of performance art don’t make money at all.
You often have to put several years of work honing your skills and building a network with any sort of creative pursuit before you see any monetary return. Caleb probably made $0 his first year doing youtube. The fact that he made even $5000 in a year and is looking to make more this year means he absolutely should stick with it. He needs to grow up though and work a full time day job and pursue comedy afterwords in the evenings and on weekends until it becomes financially viable to not have a day job anymore.
How do people still not understand that Interest rates ALWAYS outweigh whatever cashback/points you get out of credit cards??? I know no one reads anything they sign, but they stick the APR % in BIG BOLD numbers right at the top of every cards terms you apply for. 29% APR is like 2.4% of your entire balance every month they take from you to pay over literal pennies of cashback per purchase.
So true, one time I spent 2k on my credit card and paid it off before the due date and got about $30 buck cash back. Cash back is a joke and I won't in debt to get it. I keep the balance $100 or less now.
Thank you, the way you put it should help everybody in here who reads your comment. I'd like to make your point even more clear: Say you have a cc balance of $5,000 (similar to the first cc they talk about here) at that 29% APR. That's $120 in interest. EVERY. SINGLE. MONTH.

@@current3109 in what world?
@@opuntina he's kinda right. Look at the price of actual luxury cars like Bentley, Rolls Royce etc. on the secondhand market and you'll see the difference. Her sitting back watching Caleb tear his ass up with logic is CLASSIC 😅
What Caleb is trying to say is "You get a penny back for spending a dollar means you still spent $0.99 regardless... Not that you earned a penny back"
The thing he was trying to say is this was not an optional purchase.
It’s literally worse than cash
This is what Caleb was trying to explain that you (and the guest) don’t seem to understand - it’s not just about behavior, the math is against you.
No, he's saying that getting a penny back when spending a dollar is way less than the $10 you'll be charged for carrying a balance you haven't paid off. Cash back is for people with no balance.

Yes!!! This is what people completely fail to understand. Somehow they think the CCCs are in business to be their fairy god mother. 😅

Thank you! Commenting to boost this so more people can see it. Explaining interest math is a little confusing. Explaining that you are charged interest immediately on a purchase and it eats away any "cashback savings" before you get to the monthly due date makes more sense to me.
Really? I thought you still got until your bill to have the interest added for new purchases - good to know
@@Sar-ahGThat’s only if you’re not carrying a balance.
It's all so confusing and sounds like a scam to me but I'm dumb so what do I know? 😞
@@rebeccaspratling2865 I’ve paid off my balance every month since I was sixteen and I never had problems getting approved for my car (paid off years ago) or my mortgage (on track to pay off very early). In all those years I’ve paid $0 in interest fees - that money went towards building up good down payments and investments instead.
She needs to tell her son to get a real job and actually contribute to paying bills or gtfo! Also, he's NOTHING like Theo Von. That's such an insult to Theo.

Agreed, nothing at all like Theo!!

I just know this dude is using his wife for money and then if he ends up making it big he'd be the type to divorce her for some PYT. After years of her supporting him financially.
Sadly i feel this as well
What money? She makes 58000 which is poverty these days for two people.
Completely agree. I got the vibe if he did "make it" he would be filing for divorce and leaving her with the debt. Seems to be a common entertainer story.

Wait… they paid off $1,000 on his discover it but only $10 extra on hers? Buuuuttt it’s all her money. He also put the gas on her credit card after telling her not to use her own bank account. (So he can use the bank account to cover his credit card.) uh-oh.
Yeeep, and Caleb completely missed it.
As an aspiring opera singer who was brainwashed into thinking that doing or even being interested in something besides opera singing meant that you weren't serious, I can absolutely say that you NEED a plan B. I don't know the statistics on comedians, but in my industry 3% of singers make their living from singing ALONE. God forbid something like Covid comes along and wipes out quite literally all of your work...
have a plan B people
EDIT: I should have said aspiring full-time opera singer 😅 I graduated 3 years ago from my masters and work professionally as a singer, but definitely not full-time!
That's a crazy cool goal, I hope you make it!
Playing in bands I had the same attitude when I was younger. Seeing how few people even pretty high up the chain were actually making their full living from music made me change my career goal from “touring in a band” to “working a decent paying job that allows me to tour in a band”.
@@AlexhPDX THIS. The times I've heard about people singing at theaters I can only dream about and STILL having a side hustle to make ends meet is crazy
This is true of many industries outside the arts too! It amazes me how many scientists I know that don’t have backup plans or keep their CV up to date.
Excellent. Great feedback. ❤
Very valuable take, I hope people will take heed without feeling they can't have dreams and hobbies.
The dude also thinks he's "working" while his 2 "jobs" don't even bring in 15k a year
That was Her card.
Cash back or not doesnt matter at all here when his interest rates and balanxes are so high--especially when he's smoked himself stupid and his money is the funniest joke he's ever told. @@healyshen890
SELL THE MOTORCYCLE oh my goodness. "bUt I RiDe It!!" NO JUST SELL IT! He's got enough toys with wheels already!
$3500 on a car that doesn’t even work while you are in debt is probably the dumbest thing ever
Several previous guests have had as many as 2 non working cars
Why can't people be realistic with their expectations
It is a nice car though.
But I want it though
“We do okay” (in comedy)”
*brings in $5000 a year*
That is actually not bad if he was putting in real hours at a day job and is making upward progress year after year. 99% of people that attempt any sort of performance art don’t make money at all.
$5,000 in a year probably puts him in the top 10% of people who are trying to be comics. Maybe higher.
Hmm within the comedy space sure that’s fair enough lol
My 9 year old son makes more than that mowing lawns and pulling weeds.
This guy peaked in middle school
How do people still not understand that Interest rates ALWAYS outweigh whatever cashback/points you get out of credit cards??? I know no one reads anything they sign, but they stick the APR % in BIG BOLD numbers right at the top of every cards terms you apply for.
29% APR is like 2.4% of your entire balance every month they take from you to pay over literal pennies of cashback per purchase.
Probably willful ignorance or just looking for any justification
So true, one time I spent 2k on my credit card and paid it off before the due date and got about $30 buck cash back. Cash back is a joke and I won't in debt to get it. I keep the balance $100 or less now.
@@tayjones8552 cash flow credit cards or don't use them.
Discover literally has a debit card that gives you 2% back, he’s better off just doing that
Thank you, the way you put it should help everybody in here who reads your comment. I'd like to make your point even more clear:
Say you have a cc balance of $5,000 (similar to the first cc they talk about here) at that 29% APR. That's $120 in interest. EVERY. SINGLE. MONTH.
Love that Caleb is funnier than the comedian in this episode
True that
I always feel the need to comment when someone replaces "when" with "whenever"... "Whenever my dad died" drives me NUTS.
