    I made a sealed, melamine MDF cabinet with a clamping perspex door and simply placed a Hippo moisture absorber unit in it. It can hold 700 mL of water, but after 3 months, not a drop so far. Worked out to be a 1/4 of the cost of a commercial dry cabinet. it's also worth noting your own location's RH throughout the year, as it will peak in summer but some areas are quite dry and such a cabinet isn't really required.

    I've put a few silica gels in my camera and lens bag. So far so good 2 years fungus free. After watching this video, I think its better to buy a dry box

      The silica gel packs are almost totally ineffective unless in a sealed container - which your camera and lens bag are not. There is a finite amount of moisture they can absorb and in your camera bag (which is not a sealed environment) they will *rapidly* max out on what they can do. Unless you're changing them every few days those gel packs that have been in there for a long time? They're not doing anything anymore.

    I think it depends on where one lives or visited. Without storing in a cabinet, let alone a dry one, I never have any issues for over four decades, including cameras & lenses that I bought in the late seventies, such as Nikon F2A, Hasselblad 500 C/M, 50mm, 105mm, 70-200mm, etc.

    In regions with a tropical atmosphere, it´s a must have, but it seems not be the case for my location: 20 years with some silica gels in a cabinet in my living room...no fungus! I guess, on my location (central europe) it is important, that the air is able to circulate, to be able to dry as fast as possible...my cabinet isn´t air tight. Also i don´t put my equipment a.s.a.p. into the cabinet after a trip. I give my Lenses time to dry.
    But that wouldn´t work, if i lived in japan...sometimes they have tropical weather with gazillion % humidity, so the only way to be able to dry your equipment is such a dry cabinet.

    • @rinothmani6064
      @rinothmani6064 3 роки тому +1

      Giving time for ur equipments to dry out is very smart indeed 👍. I agree with you. It really depends on where you live. So buy according to your needs. Thank youuu for sharing that with all of us ❤️. We appreciate them so much. Thanks also for watching ...

    I store those in plastic pouch with silica gel in it and then inside the bag. 5 years fungus free. Before storing them for a long period I always clean the body of the lenses with 70% isopropyl alcohol (not the glasses) to get rid of any fungus specs that might have been there during photoshoot. Weather sealing gasket is still soft and not cracked. But not gonna take a chance, will think about the dry cabinet now.

    Be careful. My cab uses analogue hygrometers. The needle showed I was in the safe zone. But what happened was the needle was stuck, the dehumidifier motor was kaput. In the end, I lost 5 Leica lenses to fungus & poor workmanship. In the past, these cabs lasted forever. But now, knock-off models can break down any time.

      I think its one of those things not a lot of people think about.
      I live in the deserts of the US and our humidity is below what he recommends, never have had a problem with fungus. I went to Thailand for a month right as Covid was starting to go around. I came back home and my equipment left in the bag for roughly a month. Some of the lenses developed fungus because it hadn't been able to dry out.
      Going to make a cabinet to store my lenses in from now on. I don't need a dry cabinet but I need to make sure they don't stay in a bag after going to high humidity places.

    It was a little flimsier than I expected. I had to add a 2x2 piece of wood to the bottom on the rear side in order to stabilize it better ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxXTh-lz-8W6GcB219vTLp27-MxbZYObBX . It is also starting to bow a little at the outer wall ( I've had it up for about 6 months), I've already had a shelf tumble down because of the bow and the fact that the little shelf brackets are quite short. I went out to home depot and got some longer ones so that the shelves don't tumble down again. Overall, it looks very nice for the price and it holds a lot ( I use it as a pantry). I am very satisfied with my purchase. I just strongly suggest reinforcing it before putting it up.

      You can use single use dehumidifiers containers in a box or even a spoiled dry cabinet as long as you check the water lever every regularly (one container can last around 2 to 3 months depending on the size). When you see the level water more than a half container is time to replace for a new one. But if you never check it, you might face the problem mentioned on the video seeing your lenses floating on water.

    • @BeyondPhotography
      @BeyondPhotography  3 роки тому +8

      True. If you are alrdy living in a dry cabinet, no dry cabinet needed.

    • @dtucny
      @dtucny 3 роки тому

      I bought a dry cabinet recently, I was keeping my gear in an air-conditioned room where the humidity is lower and only taking it out when I would use it, but, that caused a problem, condensation. When the relatively cool gear moves out of the air-conditioned area into a warmer more humid area condensation starts to form all over, but more so on areas that absorb heat quicker, such as metal and glass parts, even inside lenses. I'm now keeping my gear in a non-airconditioned area, in a dry cabinet, as that allows the gear to stay at the ambient temperature without being exposed to the ambient humidity when not in use.

    • @osasenoma-owens5072
      @osasenoma-owens5072 3 роки тому +1

      @@dtucny Condensation isn't an issue if you let your gear acclimatize in a camera bag. I've only experienced condensation twice (years ago) and it's pretty easy to avoid.
      For most, keeping gear in a bag with silica gel packs is more than enough.

    • @Tinfoilnation
      @Tinfoilnation 3 роки тому +1

      You don't need humidity if you bring your gear home after having been out on a boat, or out in the rain, or in a greenhouse etc.

    • @osasenoma-owens5072
      @osasenoma-owens5072 3 роки тому

      @@Tinfoilnation That's where the desiccants come in! Besides, I have shot in the rain, wiped my camera dry and didn't even need desiccants to prevent mold from growing on the gear in my camera bag.
      Unless your lens is literally covered in water droplets, mold growth is unlikely in the short term.
