The real beauty of a deposit is it mentally gets the client more invested in that time period as well. Because they have put money up front they will be more conscious of the shoot.
I used to take photos for weddings, no more . Now i take scenic photos for myself and place on porcelain slates . Thankyou for your simple logic . The studio lights i have are 38yrs old i replaced the guts with leds and use home made dimmers . After you explanation of expensive lenses now i know whats controlled by the lenses verses the cheap ones . Thank god this is only part time .
Here’s my two cents: get a camera, learn everything you can about it from a technical perspective and then become one with it. As you do that, look at great photographers you admire. That’s it. It’s no different than picking up the guitar, learning the craft of it and then listening to your favorites for inspiration.

I use to do this professionally (not a big shot but I did ok) 4-5 figure paydays + lodging and travel paid. All this advice is on point and real life. There are a few things I did differently but you can’t go wrong here. Bravo on this video. 1. Yes general purpose zooms are needed. Nifty 50 is not your first lens lol. 24-70 f/2.8 and the 24-105 f/4 made most of my money. 2. I use to do 50% upfront deposits and estimated gas/lodging/food covered. - BUT, there are times when hourly is smarter, back then my rate was $75-100/hr. This sounds too low, but I’m charging for getting to location, shoot, thinking, planning, post process and all calls/meetings. Sometimes this works better. 3. Buy used, and rent when you can. I bought my Pro Photo lights and power pack for 50% off, and it still runs today. Best wishes to everyone watching.
Deposit, suddenly thinking about my best client. He insisted of paying 100% at front. Did several assignments for him, only had 1 time he wanted to reschedule (2 days in front). I didn't ask for more money because of the trust we had in each other, so sometimes I think it's better to just take the hit and keep the trust and retain him as customer. 😁
Oh wow, thanks for sharing your story. He's the best because you are a great and thoughtful photographer. Kudos to you Sir 😊. Thank you for watching, we hope you enjoyed this video 😍. I'm finally taking the leap to do photography for an income. One question that keeps popping up in my mind is what do you do when your shoot is supposed to be outside but the weather ends up being bad that day? I would think most people would be ok with rescheduling as they wouldn't want to be standing in the rain, snow or -20 degrees. What if they use that as an opportunity to cancel to have their deposit returned? Should a photographer always have a backup plan/area to shoot indoors on that day? Obviously a wedding would go on no matter what.
I've been told by many photographers I need this lens and this camera body, etc, etc. I've been using a Canon Rebel T5 (1200d) for 6 years. The lenses I have are 18-55mm, 55-250mm, 75-300mm, 50mm F1.8 ii, 85mm F1.8, and the Rokinon 14mm F2.8. The majority of my gear has been pre-owned. My camera body was factory refurbished. I am now looking to finally save up for a new camera body. I'm still getting great photos with my gear but I think it's time I finally get a camera body that has more advanced features.
For me James, if the camera works then it works 🤣🤣🤣 An upgrade is definitely is a nice idea, but need to consider many factors. Having Andrew share this really is refreshing as he share what we need to consider to upgrade 😍😍😍 Good to hear ur upgrading 😉😉😉 Channel admin Farah N 😉 😉 😉
@@misscheeryfarahn951 It will be a while before finding the right camera for me. I'm still getting great results from this camera. So I'm going to use it as long as I can. I love Andrew's views, unlike most photographers who just say, "This is the most expensive so this camera is for you." Andrew breaks it down for the photographers style of photography.
@@jamessanders2164 Im fine using mine as well for now James 🤣🤣🤣 Still need to learn lots from Andrew, so this one is great. I have a used Canon 550D btw. Its great that Andrew sharing great points to consider n we can weight the pro n cons to upgrade
Depending on what you are interested in the 1200D is solid. Sensor from the 7D1 / 60D. Your kit sounds portrait heavy and there small buffer and low fps are not a big problem. Looking at used gear is always a good idea. Even more so with Canon. For example the 80D is almost as good as the 90D for most tasks. But a few hundred euro cheaper. The 6D is old but for landscape and portrait good enough. And so on
Working with what you have is purely ADAPTIVE. New technology doesn't equate to better results, it's our eyes, perception, and vision that needs upgrading. As for primes, it's basically individual preference, and one needs to plan every shoot to have sufficient time to do things.

This won’t prevent you from returning the deposit if the client moves on court. If you can show that you had others who wanted to book that slot, you can get some, but you can’t get away with everything if you deposit is unreasonably high. Court will make decision on what was a reasonable loss to you. That is why you should start putting some work time to show that you earned some part of the deposit. In short, in court, you will have to justify your loss, even if the client signed your refund policy.

The deposit talk was insanely useful, even though i don't work in photography, you can apply that in many cases, if you're a professional, and people recommend you to others because of your work, there's nothing to worry about asking for a 30% deposit, and when things get complicated, it's better to lose a bit and keep your image clean, that to piss shitty customers off.
Regarding your first point: Well, I bought the RF 28-70 f/2 and shortly after the RF 100-500 f4.5-7.1 and they truly do everything. Low light, portrait, sports, wildlife, Landscape, even macro (100-500 can focus very close). Wide angle to super tele. My GAS has been satiated.
Wow, they're great to have. I'm glad they do everything to satiate your photography requirements. Thanks for sharing that 😍. - Rin Othmani, Channel Admin -
i love this all. i recently upgraded from my old rebel t6i to a canon m6 mark II because i figured that since i was doing a lot more video work, i could use the 4k recording, slow motion, improved low light performance, and lighter body for using with a smaller gimbal on the go. i still have my t6i for when i want a dslr for photo work, because the 24mp sensor is excellent and nothing beats a real viewfinder. having a variety of gear is awesome for what i do

I’m not a pro. I came to photography late in life. I bought a D750 with new lenses but I decided to see what the old stuff was like. I bought a D700 really cheap & 3 push pull lenses. I love them. The D700 is a pleasure to use & the 35-70 f2.8 is beautiful. And they’re cheap. I’m not upgrading while I can get real value for money with old equipment. Thanks for your video’s they’re very helpful

Just to chime in here about the D700. Ive used one for my hobby photography for the last 8 years and I bought it heavily used! They are tough work horses that do a fantastic job. I think I paid $500 for the body and then no more than 3-400 USD for each lens. I only just sold it last week in turn for a mirrorless camera with a much higher megapixel count but that is only because I wanted to crop more of my landscape photos. Enjoy your D700! They are fantastic!

Great advices. In a world filled with clickbait this guy is explaining nuances and that's awesome. For example, I would tell beginners to try exclusively using a 50mm equivalent so that they think more and more carefully about their composition and perspective, but to a more advanced person who is just getting into doing say, event coverage, they will need to lower the artistic pursuit at times and just use the zooms because it's more important to get the shot, no matter how bad.

I agree 👍..I updates my EOS R for the CANON R5..for more in focus shots with action and bird/animal photography..plus the animal AI autofocus and 45 megapixels...that was a worthy upgrade. With the EOS R I was not hitting but a small percentage of my action shots. It's a Great Portrait camera...but does NOT FOCUS fast!!
Collecting a deposit is the best advice. I have always collected at least 30% to 50% prior to the start of shooting, then the rest of the payment prior to releasing the final images. I have only one customer that I do not collect a deposit from as he always pays 100% of the fees upon my arrival at the location.
40 years surely is a long time to have an ongoing passion for a business Gary 😍😍😍 Thanks for watching. Remember to support our E-Learning courses Channel admin Farah N 😉 😉 😉
Yes indeed, thats why i started collect deposit and not feeling shame on asking. What is ur opinion regarding 30% before 50% after job done and 20% upon delivery?
I bought a 5d mark 3 as my first digital camera and a couple of sharp high end lenses. One or two lenses can honestly cover so much. I've had a 24-70mm and a 70-200 2.8. I use the telephoto for portraits tbh. I still heavily use my mark 3 and lenses, never upgraded. Photography is expensive, but starting off expensive is honestly not even that bad of an idea.

I agree. Being the best photographer out there won't mean anything unless you can manage the business end. Posting nice photos on Instagram isn't marketing.
the deposit segment was really helpful especially doing some work preshoot so you can keep some of the deposit is really smart advice especially so you don't get sued.
I'm a professional photographer, mainly working at incidents like road accidents, fires etc. I can't afford the time to change lense and I don't want to change lenses when it's raining, or smoke suddenly comes my way. Also I hate lugging a lot of stuff when at a scene. So the EF 28-300 mm is the only lens I use for that work.

Goodness... brilliant video and succinctly put. If only photographers would heed your advice!!! For years I have advised those who ask about the business side of being a photographer. They never believe me when I tell them that successfully being in business doing photography is not about taking photos - this should be a given! To earn a living in photography you MUST value your time; you must learn to run a business; you must learn to sell yourself and therefore your abilities and photos. If you do not 'get it' abut running the business or selling, then you will not be a very happy photographer. You may well be the best photographer that has ever been, but if you don't, or are unable to, let people know that you are the very best that has ever been then you will always be the poorest photographer that has ever been! I never ask for a deposit - these are refundable! I ask for a booking fee and this booking fee is actually part of the whole fee, and (as you correctly put it) I work for the client way before the day of the shoot so I am earning that fee from the start. ALSO, again as you say, it is vital that the client knows that you are beavering away for them way before the event even starts. Great video and I trust that all take note.
Best advice I have ever heard. As a person who is reluctant to do photography for business even though I want to do it, these tips and advice are gold to me. Thank you!
I’ve heard people saying that EyeAF is cheating, yet it makes composing the shot much better. For people doing portraits, it’s not a bad choice. Not saying DSLRs are automatically crap, but the technology is getting better and worth thinking about upgrading to.
I hope that people who complain about better technology in cameras are only using rangefinder or dual lens film cameras. After all of eye-af is cheating than autofocus at all is cheating, and so is using a digital sensor, as well as composing your shot through the imaging lens.
I mainly use vintage lenses and vintage cameras because that’s the type of work I do but I also use adapters on vintage glass to use them with modern cameras
When I did graphic design and illustration freelance many would agree to my fee and then run when I mentioned deposit, they were never going to pay anything in the first place, I once got a client that contacted me for a charity company I agreed to do a logo for them for free seeing as it was a charity but then I they slipped up they said they were getting eight graphic designers to do it for free and they would choose the best one to show on their website and media. So I would of been wasting time and got nothing out of it they didn't choose me at all and many of these charity companies make a profit. Charge everybody including friends unless you owe them for building your new garden fence for free.
What I like is how you retain some of your deposit by starting some preliminary work before the client cancels the job. Great idea and I'm going to share it.
It’s a great point for sure! Something also has to be said for time slot and availability as well. A photographer in a busy industry doesn’t just miss out on the revenue of the one gig but the gig they had to turn down to make time for it as well.

Loved this video. Especially when you touched the topic on deposits. Its true that the first year, I did not require my clients to pay a deposit and learned the hard way of why I needed to do that. Anything you added on to that was a valuable insight to me. Thank you for sharing.
The only caveat with not returning a deposit is how close to the shoot- if they cancel a week out, that's one thing. If they cancel 48 hours out, (like you said), no, that's a no refund, regardless of the amount of prep work. As you said on the front part of the deposit, they are booking your TIME- and if you blocked out time, that's time you aren't booking other clients... Which means, you need a reasonable amount of time to get other work. So, I think refunding (partially or fully) when you are a comfortable timeframe out is good- however, last minute cancels (which I would consider NLT 72 hours before), nope, you booked my time, I can't refund. (Though I do agree that one should keep a log of the prep work- and have a disclaimer about the deposit refund policy in the booking agreement/contract.)

As for Zoom vs Prime I generally say get zoom lenses first. I say this because I think it's good to have certain lens ranges covered. Once you have those ranges covered for the shots you take. Then I say invest into some good primes preferably in the 1.2 or 1.4 range. Although there are some great prime lenses in the 1.8 & even F2 range(canon 135mm F2). Also if you need specialty lenses such as a Macro or Tilt Shift etc.. then of course invest in those things. But it all depends on what you're shooting. If I shot sports & wildlife.. a 600mm Prime is out of range pricewise for most early in their career photographers.. but a 3rd party(Tamron or Sigma) 150-600 is definitely feasible to even save up for. And even proprietary brand such as Canon, Nikon & Sony have options in a price range for their 100-400 or 100-500 etc. I often get more of a 'wow' factor from primes. But I currently have more zooms than primes.

In one of Annie Leibovitz's school.....one student asks her "what kind of camera were you using".....they all think either Nikon or Canon is the best. Same class, different question "do you need expensive lenses".....her answers for both questions was "It does not matter what kind of camera you are shooting with, it all depends on you and how you take your picture". As for lenses, she said "Use one lens and play with it....see if that lens can give you your shot. When friends and strangers ask me what brand of camera is good, I honestly tell them its a toss up between Nikon and Canon and to just go to Best Buy and try out ALL the bodies.....love a certain feel to a specific body? that just may be yours!!! As a shooter, for many years....I come to realize I need 2 camera bodies with 2 lenses....both shoot digital BUT one lens is a 11-20mm 2.8 and the other, a 18-300mm 3.5 and I have a 70-200 2.8 when I do low light shooting. A lot of other photogs question my gear and even criticize me because they "think" I want to impersonate the press photographers at our local daily. Andrew says Upgrade....you really dont have to do that....know your camera and if you have a situation where its dark, adjust your ISO.....that will help pump up the image so you can get a great shot.....also, standing damn still and using a monopod or tripod helps! He also mentions a photographer who uses only prime lenses in his backpack.....well, that photographer better not be married or have a sig other.. if he wants to buy MORE primes. I have learned to utilize my gear and shoot with both and then come home to upload and photoshop!!
To push ISO - you need a camera that can do that. So if you are into lowlight with movement- get a high end APS-C or a resonably current full frame (5D3 or 6D1 for Canon) Monopod/Tripod only work if there is little movement AND the nessecary space to use them. And you are allowed to. Otherwise a stabilised lens or a body with IBIS is the better way Primes can still be the right stuff. There are exactly two APS-C Zooms with f/1.8 and two f/2 Full frame ones. All four very costly, the APS-C ones very tempramental. So if you need the speed- primes are the best choice. Same for macro work With your gear - I would miss half my pictures and/or spend time on the computer to do a bad lookalike of what a proper lens/body could do OOC in better quality
great advice. been taking pictures for 6 years now and i secured the trinity zoom lenses for my system and a 35mm prime. im happy and satisfied. i use fujifilm btw

Hello, wondering what you guys thinking about keeping money for losing other works you could have potentially down but turned down due to client booking. If a client cancels your booking and you return his deposit, would you recommend to keep a part to make up for rejecting other work you would have potentially down on that day ? Or for example before the start mentioning that for cancelling a shooting shortterm ( 2 or 3 days prior ) a 20% of the deposit will be help due to short time cancelation?

My advice as an amateur; Use rule of thirds as a basis and experiment with it Experiment with different elevations and angles Consider an ND filter to help with reflections Lastly and most importantly - use what you have and experiment and explore. The camera you have is the only one you can use, so you use it whether that's a DSLR, a Mirrorless or even your phone. The more you explore and experiment the more you figure out what looks good and what doesnt until you're doing things naturally and that skill translates across tools.
Thats why what ever your deposit is, you need to be clear if it is non refundable. So for a wedding for example, it's $500 non refundable deposit. Whether I do the shoot or not I keep that. Thats roughly 20% to 30% of the whole shoot for me. Whether I have another photographer on the scene or not ect. Usually within in a week of the shoot, I get paid in full. I'm not fighting for my pay after the fact. This is all explained to them before and it works for me. With a signed contract.

dont go to a camera store (like in NYC)....because once they KNOW you are "fresh meat", they WILL attach a bait and hope you FALL for it and they REEL you in for a body, lenses, filters, memory cards, care kits, backpack or camera bag, tripod......and on and on............you have a budget of $1000, you end up making a loan to spend $10k.......

Nice pro advise. On default I ask 65% to book crew 'n gear into shooting dates, and this will be clearly stated within the Budget-Estimate-Offer-Proposal. Good clients (Agencies, TV Channels, Industry clients) know the rules; best clients like to pay even 100% upfront/ done is done. Better both sides are committed to the work. If client pay the deposit, its OUR task to ensure gear and crew are top level to clients expectations, stated in the offer. Sometimes we work with big crews and freelancers (warderobe, stylists, etc...); and WE MAKE SURE everyone hired, get pay'd on wrap! That makes better results! Clients have no hassle, and we offer best service. If some new client tell YOU (the pro, who experienced 10 or more years of imaging work) how to set your studio/stage/lighting/camera and lens options, let them do it. They will not pay a dime.
Deposit? 100% in advance. In other consumer services and products this has become the norm. You have to pay for stuff online that you might not receive for weeks.
I have 2 expensive lenses and a bunch of vintage lenses. For my style I mainly use my 85mm 1.4 and 35mm 1.4 ii, any time I’ve had more lenses than that I don’t use them

It always annoys me when I see people who are starting out in photography obsess about their equipment because the so called experts say they need expensive equipment. I have being doing photography for the last 3 years and have worked my way up from a bridge camera to a Nikon D5600 to a Nikon D500. I have sold quite a few prints of my work and the one I have sold the most (and won an award for) was a photo taken on my old D5600 with the 18-55mm kit lens
That is one remarkable photography journey Alistair 😍😍😍 Thank you for sharing it with us. Remember to check out our E-Learning courses Channel admin Farah N 😉 😉 😉
I just use prime lenses cause i only photograph professionaly museum artifacts, old photo and graphic documents archives and i do astrophotography has a hobby. So i am pretty sure that prime lenses will do it for me. If i need to do other types of photos that require more adaptive focal lenghts i would be done. Can´t do it with my primes.

Thank you for sharing this with us Replicant 😍😍😍 It surely is a great feeling to learn something cause we loves it.

Good advice my friend.
That advice, is more than 2 cents. Love the comment Replicant. Well said!! - Andrew Boey
Excellent two cents. Agreed.
Yup....
Thank youuuuu for sharing this with is Minh, it surely is awesome 😍😍😍 Stay safe!!!

I love your wise comments bro
This is absolutely brilliant. Subscribed!

Having Andrew share this really is refreshing as he share what we need to consider to upgrade 😍😍😍 Good to hear ur upgrading 😉😉😉
Channel admin Farah N 😉 😉 😉
Heck, the most important thing- does it work for you... and I'm reminded of that old saying about the person who blames their tools, yeah?
You should tell your clients your deposit and refund policy up front so there's no surprises if they do cancel.

@@rinothmani6064 I would agree for clients you have a good relationship with. Not clients that try to lowball you or have habit of cancelling.
Yes, I agree with you@@creativevisiongaming😊.
@@rakeshravindran3147 Yes you can't get away with all. I just mean a small percentage as the deposit.

Iyup, for me personally as well I do prefer to take the deposit first
Channel admin Farah N 😉 😉 😉
Regarding your first point:
Well, I bought the RF 28-70 f/2 and shortly after the RF 100-500 f4.5-7.1 and they truly do everything. Low light, portrait, sports, wildlife, Landscape, even macro (100-500 can focus very close). Wide angle to super tele. My GAS has been satiated.
Wow, they're great to have. I'm glad they do everything to satiate your photography requirements. Thanks for sharing that 😍.

i love this all. i recently upgraded from my old rebel t6i to a canon m6 mark II because i figured that since i was doing a lot more video work, i could use the 4k recording, slow motion, improved low light performance, and lighter body for using with a smaller gimbal on the go. i still have my t6i for when i want a dslr for photo work, because the 24mp sensor is excellent and nothing beats a real viewfinder. having a variety of gear is awesome for what i do

E series lenses are great. Also D series lenses are cheap and amazing.

Collecting a deposit is the best advice. I have always collected at least 30% to 50% prior to the start of shooting, then the rest of the payment prior to releasing the final images.

Goodness... brilliant video and succinctly put.
Thank youuu so much for sharing your experience with all of us ❤️❤️❤️. We appreciate it.

Thank you. Your comment is truly a morale booster for a 50-year-old UA-camr like me - Amdrew

Love this channel very informative!! Thanks

As for Zoom vs Prime
I generally say get zoom lenses first.
Thank you so much Sir!! Gold!

So if you are into lowlight with movement- get a high end APS-C or a resonably current full frame (5D3 or 6D1 for Canon)
Monopod/Tripod only work if there is little movement AND the nessecary space to use them. And you are allowed to. Otherwise a stabilised lens or a body with IBIS is the better way
Primes can still be the right stuff. There are exactly two APS-C Zooms with f/1.8 and two f/2 Full frame ones. All four very costly, the APS-C ones very tempramental. So if you need the speed- primes are the best choice. Same for macro work
With your gear - I would miss half my pictures and/or spend time on the computer to do a bad lookalike of what a proper lens/body could do OOC in better quality
great advice. been taking pictures for 6 years now and i secured the trinity zoom lenses for my system and a 35mm prime. im happy and satisfied. i use fujifilm btw
Thank you for watching Macuhvelli 😍😍😍 We hope you enjoy the show
Channel admin Farah N 😉 😉 😉
There's no one 'do everything' lens, but some lenses are more versatile than others.

Great advice, glad I found your channel.
We hope you enjoy the video James. Remember to support our E-Learning courses ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

My advice as an amateur;
Use rule of thirds as a basis and experiment with it
Experiment with different elevations and angles
Consider an ND filter to help with reflections
Lastly and most importantly - use what you have and experiment and explore.
Yes need to always be clear. Thanks for sharing that with all of us 😍😍😍. To check out or subscribe to our great promos, visit us here beyond.photos 😊. Be sure to sign-up before all promos ends.

As always, great advice! Zoom lenses have come a long way, and I gotta have mine.
Hard to imagine you've been doing this for 8 years, now (with long hair), and I apparently left my first comment 5 years ago (with he same perfect hair I have today). Time sure flies when learning is fun! I've learned TONS of great stuff (like breaking the flash sync speed without HSS). I didn't believe it, but you sure proved it. Thanks for all the great work you and your team have done over these years. Did I miss your 200K subscriber giveaway? I'll take a new Hasselblad. Thanks!
You're very welcome. WOW, 5 years ago for your first comment, that is special. Thank youuu for staying loyal and for being such a great supporter. Your comments sure made us improved a lot. Hehe, glad to know you had the same perfect hair 🤭. Thank youuu again Miley ❤️❤️❤️.

Love your teaching style. Clear and concise. I'm not even a pro photographer
dont go to a camera store (like in NYC)....because once they KNOW you are "fresh meat", they WILL attach a bait and hope you FALL for it and they REEL you in for a body, lenses, filters, memory cards, care kits, backpack or camera bag, tripod......and on and on............you have a budget of $1000, you end up making a loan to spend $10k.......

That makes
better results! Clients have no hassle, and we offer best service.
If some new client tell YOU (the pro, who experienced 10 or more years of imaging work) how to set your studio/stage/lighting/camera and lens options, let them do it. They will not pay a dime.
Talking from experiences ❤️❤️❤️ Thank youuuu for sharing it with us 😍😍😍 Wr hope you enjoy the video

Deposit?
100% in advance.
In other consumer services and products this has become the norm.
You have to pay for stuff online that you might not receive for weeks.
How time change right Eke, technology advancement 😍😍😍

Remember to check out our E-Learning courses

I think the choice of lenses comes with knowing what you do and like to do in photography and in your life.
Iyup, knowing what we will be photographing on will surely help, alot 🤣🤣🤣
