  • From 1997 to 2007, Wizards hosted a Magic the Gathering invitational tournament, and among the prizes were the ability to help design a card with the R and D as well as getting your likeness on the card’s art. This tradition was continued with the world championship winner in more recent years, giving us a total of 14 cards that were designed in part by and bear the likeness of a professional magic the gathering player, and as you might expect, most of these cards have ended up being quite powerful. Today, we’re going to go over the best of the best of the cards made by the best.

    Another Ranger of Eos inspired card, Knight-Errant of Eos, is seeing play in standard right now! It has convoke and lets you look at the top 6 cards of your library and add up to 2 creatures with equal or lesser cmc than the number of creatures you convoked to cast it
    Mastermind still sees some play in Esper midrange and legends decks in Standard, but folks are experimenting with a 2/1 flier from the new set that can loot to replace it.

    as said by magics own gavin verhey. The old program let players work with R&D to make a card. But since the process was VERY slow with the new program they decided to go with this new system to streamline things.

    You mentioned there were 14 of these cards... why not feature the other 4 as honorable mentions?
    the other 4 that wasnt in this list that I am aware of are:
    - Shadowmage Infiltrator: UB1, 1/3 , Fear (cannot be blocked except by Black and Artifact Creatures), when this creature deals damage to an opponent, draw 1 card
    - Voidmage Prodigy: UU, 2/1, UU: Sacrifice a Wizard: counter target spell. Morph 3.
    - Rakdos Augermage: BBR, 3/2, First Strike. Tap: Reveal your hand and discard a card of target opponent's choice. Your opponent then reveals their hand and you choose 1 card from it, that player discards that card. Play this ability as a sorcery.
    - Rootwater Thief: U1, 1/2. U: Gains Flying until end of turn. When this card deals combat damage to a player, you may pay 2, if you do, search that player's deck for any card and exile it. Shuffle deck
    The common thing I can see with all 4 of of these cards is that they dont immediately do anything when they hit the table... and their effects can be slow to pull off. 2 of these cards require to do combat damage, the augermage has a bizarre way of discarding cards that I wish could be used as an instant... and Voidmage requires significant mana AND resources. I have copies of all 4 of these cards XD
    PS: It also doesnt help that, at the time, Rakdos and it's "look ma, no cards in hand!" (Hellbent) strategy wasn't THAT refined yet... most of its cards weren't on rate if youre not in Hellbent

    • @MrSchwad
      @MrSchwad 7 місяців тому +1

      You kinda touched on this, but several of these cards weren't the most powerful things you could be doing in these sets
      - Infiltrator: Was downright novel at the time and still solid in a vacuum - I've seen it in cube for years - but it wasn't even the best UB1 creature in its own set; Psychatog buried you in discard shenanigans before Infiltrator drew you enough cards to matter
      - Prodigy: Wizards were the main blue tribe in Onslaught and their support was buns, you would just rather play Elves, Goblins, or even Zombies/Clerics before Wizards
      - Augermage: Outside of some cool legendaries Dissension did all three of its guilds pretty dirty. Hellbent in particular sucked because it was super swingy (you had it or you didn't, and if you didn't you were below rate) and it encouraged you to over-commit (and get BTFO)
      - Thief: An expensive way of pulling a singleton copy of something out of your opponent's deck, doesn't impact the board, mostly a worse Storm Crow, and Merfolk used to just play Better Creatures instead of other Merfolk until better Merfolk came around

    With the recent improvements in digital art I'm looking forward to seeing more and more of these cards with a proper action pose instead of just being a modified resting portrait. We might even get a card where the pro is in the backline with minions in the foreground and their face is only recognizable if you look at it as closely as a true MTG fan would.

    • @wizardsmix7961
      @wizardsmix7961 6 місяців тому +2

      Ehh I think the quality is going in the opposite direction. Yuta's face straight up looks photoshopped onto the card with how much it clashes with the surrounding art. The older pieces done with traditional painting or digital painting look significantly more aesthetically pleasing imo.

    • @jshtng78
      @jshtng78 6 місяців тому

      @@wizardsmix7961 Maybe, I just personally feel that being a 'fantasized' retrace of a normal photo pose makes the piece feel lower quality by default regardless of the artist's talent. That to me can give even the most skilled artist's redraw of it an unshakeable Deviantart OC feel.
      Snapcaster Mage is the most glaring example because under the bells and whistles I can see Tiago standing casually in the studio just by looking at the card. Surely they deserve better than that.

    After three uses of this cards effect, it is transformed into ‘Atlas, Holder of the World.’ “
    “Atlas, Holder of the World” 1, 1 of each color
    Creature- Deity
    “The person who controls this card has their health set to 10, they cannot take damage from any other sources than ‘Atlas, Holder of the World.’
    Every turn ‘Atlas, Holder of the World’ is on the field, each player takes 1 damage at the start of their upkeep.

    Faerie Mastermind is an allllll star in commander. If its not dealt with, it can easily draw a significant portion of your deck over one turn cycle. I recently had Alhammarets archive out with Seedborn Muse. Flashed in FM after my turn, triggered its draw, everyone draws 1 and i draw 8. The whole table looked at me and went "what the actual F$%@?"
    It died before my next turn, but drew me 24 cards before it got banished to the shadow realm. I could have guarded it, but i had already drawn multiple win cons.
    I dont leave home without it anymore.
