That’s one of the reasons that this is my favorite of her various versions of this song. In 1965, she was way too young to really sing this song and mean it; and in 2018, she was clearly too old, sounding like she was trying to revisit (if not cling to) her past youth. Like they say in The Three Bears, this “porridge” is just right!!!
Today’s NYT article on Marianne brought me here. I’m 70 and have loved this song from the original, from the Stones’ version, and this version. I especially like this version now, as it captures a look back on one’s life and an appreciation, I think, of all those little things going around you. Good songs withstand the test of time, don’t they? God bless and keep Marianne Faithfull.
Marianne Faithfull was born in London, England on 29 December 1946. She is an English singer and actress who achieved popularity in the 1960s with the release of her hit single "As Tears Go By" and became one of the lead female artists during the British Invasion in the United States. She is celebrating her 76 birthday today December 29, 2022
I just saw this. Wow! What a complete difference from the '64 video. Totally a haunting video. The shots of her sitting alone and then the cutbacks to her as a young woman speak volumes.
For all of us Baby Boomers, Marianne Faithful haunts us with her still-beautiful voice and all the tragedy and trauma she experienced over the decades. n.b. people tend to be harder on her but chuckle about Keith Richard's semi-embalmed persona!
I am from Finland, born in 1949. In my youth I heard this melody and immedietely fell in love with it. I never happened to see Marianne Faithfull Faithful in person anywhre nor at any concert while living in London in 1983-87 but this melody carries me on since my youth in the 60's. I even learnerd the chords and to play guitar along this melody! Lovely greeting and happiness to Marianne Faithful from this 74-year fellow in Finland!
I adore listening to her original version of the song, then immediately skipping to this one in which you can hear and feel the difference between her younger self, and her more matured self. She's had a hell of a life, and it's no one's fault but her own, but she conquered it all and survived. It was only after all she put herself through that she could sing this song with real heart, and she does so right here. I'm glad we still have her.
You should hear the new re-recording of the song. If you like this version from 1987. Then I think that you will love the newest re-recording form her latest album from 2018. :)
This the best version and what jagger and Richard wanted to transmit with this song. Specially written for Marianne Faithful. Simply beautiful… and sad
Nowadays it’s popular to hear dark or depressing versions of normally cheery and major sounding classic songs. This sounds just like that but not only did she do her own cover but also did it 35 years before everyone else lol
I remember not liking this version when I first heard in '87. I was just 18 and full life and full of shit. Now that I'm older and still alive this song has a completely new meaning.
@@coloneljackmustard im 40. Lol im old as shit!!!i lived a Maryann faithful lifestyle though with the drugs and the partying. Im no Mic Jagger. I ain't gonna be around to be 80 yrs lol
I do really like this version of this song. Even though Marianne clearly lost her youthful voice by this time, this version of this song versus her version from the 60s is still just as beautiful 😊🎶
So lovely youth has gone but still so beautiful and with deeper and stronger resonance and understanding of the world and its perilous depths. Bless her!
i always loved this song from the first time i heard it - circa 1965 - this version while maybe not as 'great' is still a haunting version - i was a little shocked when i first heard it but it very quickly grew on me - wonderful to hear it now 33 years later ... great to see the visuals too now - thanks You Tube!!!!!
I wonder if there would be any way of blending young Marianne's version of the song with older Marianne's version - an extreme version of duetting with herself.
Dear Marianne, I hope you are well, as well as can be expected- I wish you and your family a Happy Christmas and I so hope better things for 2023, perhaps another album of spoken word...Namaste from a Fan in Canada. Much love.
There's just something about this slowed down version - I mean, I love her original version but this puts a totally different take on it done at this temp. Bravo!
l used to take NYC ferry between Statan Island and Manhattan so many times. Thank you the song and video bring me good old memories, 2021. best wishes.
She has lived the song now.
I love her ❤
I adore her, from first time I saw her, and heard her voice, many moos ago ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Terrible voice
She needed to grow into this song, lol. Love it.
So even more Beautiful when she was older
Because she's Capricorn.
The women age the best

Given the amount of time she spent on drugs...living on the streets...this version has a meaning that's less than romantic and whimsical.
Are you aware of her life history? To fully understand *this* version you need to be.
Yes, agree, I am 70.

I admire her resilience and strength...she had gone through a lot in life.
I just saw this. Wow! What a complete difference from the '64 video. Totally a haunting video. The shots of her sitting alone and then the cutbacks to her as a young woman speak volumes.
And it makes more sense as an older woman looking back at her past at all the joy she has lost.
This song has been haunting me for 54 years and still does..

+Joseph Russio Not sure it's 'no one's fault but her own'.
Her voice is an instrument and smoking in Europe killed people and voices...cannot abuse the instrument of the voice....Steven
I couldn't agree more. This 1987 version is so much better!
She survived heroin 🖤 🇬🇧
She never blamed anyone but herself. More people should be so self aware.
my favourite version of the song - the colours are darker, more autumnal - beautiful!
World-weary, wise, and mortal.

STUNNING ! Much more depth than her beautiful, wistful youthful version. I cannot - nor do I wish to- get through it WITHOUT tears going by.
One of the most beautiful music videos I've ever watched. Elegance by an elegant lady.

@@jamesbehrje4279 Not really. Only 52 years. Just middle aged.

@spartacusvikinga it has character & patina
So lovely youth has gone but still so beautiful and with deeper and stronger resonance and understanding of the world and its perilous depths. Bless her!
She was something to see in concert a few years ago. Incredibly charming, outspoken, still energetic, and a smile that just lit up the room.
The true beauty of this song is in the truth you can hear in the voice singing it, and even as ….years go by…it still resonates …..thank you for this

This with the 1964 version as counterpoint: pure art, pure life.

She seems freer than she was in 1964.. I like this one a lot better.
Quel chemin Marianne, le calme après la tempête. Nous t'aimons.
beautifully sung. magical voice.
Stay strong! We need you!
Good art doesn't gets older.
Love her so much!
After seeing those people on the Staten Island Ferry, I can't help but wonder how they made out in life.
Songs don't make me cry but boy this one continues to jerk the tears out of me.
When I was a pre teen, I thought it was a silly, little ditty. Now. Not so much.
I have sailed where she sailed..
Meet too.bless you.and thank you..
I think they call it,, Goosebumps.. chills.
We are all here for a short time.. and then, like a flash in the pan.. it's all done.. take care.🕉️☮️
Her voice is swag 👍👍
A new perspective, I love this!
Ela canta muito. Um clássico repaginado que já virou outro clássico. Aqui estamos em 2021 ouvindo essa versão excelente. 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Beautiful song ❤️
Love her she has ment a lot for me!
mélancolie douce si délicatement, si pudiquement exprimée, partagée, murmurée à chaque être solitaire en exil sur terre
Beautiful !!!
Marianne's story is beautiful at my point in my life that is my viewpoint
She Survives IT she knows TIME !
A wonderful moment
Marianne, you can still live a life without Jagger ! You are showing yourself here proving you can do it.
In my Stones playlist with their original version. Thanks for the upload!
