    Great Video Rob, thanks as always. They put the stove jack cover on top because water rolls down hill. If they put it atnthe bottom rolling up it would be like putting your roof tiles on starting at the top and working down. (Water traps). They could mount it higher and the flap longer so it can roll farther out the way, or give an extra bit of fire proof material to wrap it in.

    The path in the forests is kilometers of silence, calmness. This is mushroom prel, the careful fluttering of birds. These are cold porcini mushrooms, wild strawberries, purple bluebells in the clearings, trembling of aspen leaves, solemn light and, finally, forest twilight, when dampness pulls from the mosses and fireflies burn in the grass.

    Rob, I think the reason the flap is at the top is if you DON'T use a stove pipe, water will run off the tent via the flap. With the flap at the bottom, chances are rain will seep thru the velcro and the tent will leak.

    Great to see you again Rob. Always love watching your videos. One answer for the question about stove Jack covers: there's sewn on to the body of the tent. So if it's not in use, then it's left covering the jack. When it is in use, it's still sewn to the body of the tent and still provides rain protection so water doesn't get in through the jack. Now whether the cover is sewn on below the Jack and fastened with velcro, much the way it is now, or is completely removable and fastened on the same way, it will allow rainwater to get into the jack very easily. Velcro doesn't make much of a water stop. Gravity kind of makes the common design of the stove Jack cover a bit of a fire hazard and makes it easy to burn on your stove pipe, but that's the surest way to keep the inside of your tent protected from precipitation, whether rain or melted snow. Manufacturers expect you to just roll it up as tightly as possible to minimize the potential for damage, but I agree that a different design would be better.

    The flap might need to be above the stove pipe so when you're not using the stove, it covers the hole and water can run over it. If the velcro strip was on the top, water could enter the stove pipe hole.... try putting a stick inside the flap before you roll it up and then wrap paracord around the bundle to keep it up tight so it can't droop down and touch the pipe. That seems to work for me. Had to figure out something, I torched a couple of flaps in my day too. Can't do much with a krinkled flap that you fried so bad you can't unroll it. Keep putting up these videos, I enjoy the hell out of them!! Oh - baton with your axe.... rest the blade and whack the back. You won't damage the eye whacking it with wood.

      Excellent video! I agree with you, they need to improve that flap. The reason it's sewn above is to help with water proofing, so the rain doesn't just flow in. Maybe instead of a toggle in the center they could put 1 at each end of the flap to prevent it from curling towards the chimney. Good luck! Keep up the great videos!👍

      I think the reason they do that with the cover is because it acts as a shingle for rain, but what good is it against rain if it melts? What they should do is have a tiny rain fly right above that covers the closed flap, while letting it drop down out of the way. It could be all one piece therefore not creating additional seams. Somewhat like an envelope. Vintage campers make use of all their chrome by providing the tiniest bit of shelter to their side-sliding windows, quite effectively keeping water out. You should really consider designing your own tents. I'd buy one.

Re: flap - I think they are always placed on top to prevent water from getting into the jack. Perhaps putting a piece of velcro on the tent about 6-8" above would allow you to just fold back the cover and attach it out of the way (vs rolling it up as it is designed). Just a thought. Absolutely love this video! Your filming and editing is getting so advanced! Just be careful not to cut you hand with that bucksaw … the log grabbing hand should be “through” the blade so if you have blade bounce it does not slice that hand.

    Do you think the flap is positioned above the stove pipe hole to divert water running down the tent, away from the hole?

    • @BrooksandBirches
      @BrooksandBirches  2 роки тому

      I think so Jason! It must be the reason and it probably works on tents without such steep pitched roof but on a lot of the designs it just doesn't work

  • @MarshandMellow83
    @MarshandMellow83 2 роки тому

    Hi, you're right about the flap for the stove pipe...maybe it's done that way just so it does burn, in order for them to keep customers buying different tents? Maybe they all stuck to the same pattern, because no one challenged the design flaw, no one bothered to go out and trial run the design, or they didn't understand simple engineering ...just my opinion.. Thank You for sharing, Be Well

    • @BrooksandBirches
      @BrooksandBirches  2 роки тому

      Could be!! I know they put them above for water to run down but the tents they are designing have much steeper roof lines than previous hot tents and it just doesn't work on these so you're probably right! They want you to melt it

    I really like your adventures but i have trouble understanding how your tent is a hot tent. There is a large gap between the tent wall and the ground and the floor consists of ice and snow. If the tent really was hot or warm the snow would melt under you and make a soggy mess.
    Well, I hope it goes well for you.
