    I’ve been winter camping for years with the Kodiak canvas model of this tent. Tip: get yourself a portable hammer drill for drilling frozen ground. They are cheap and light and if you upgrade the battery you’ll have the power to set up 10 similar tents. The Australians use them for drilling into compacted desert.

    • @BrooksandBirches
      @BrooksandBirches  2 роки тому +6

      Thats a great idea Kev!! I have an auger bit that I use for setting earth anchors in the ground and never even thought to use something like that! And when truck camping I can bring the drill no problem

    • @kevdalton7579
      @kevdalton7579 2 роки тому +5

      @@BrooksandBirches No! You are missing the genius of my tip. You are buying a battery powered hammer drill which is primarily used for drilling concrete. (Of course most people won’t own one). It takes a bit made for drilling concrete which is why it makes short work of, say, 6” of ice and then even frozen gravel underneath. Get a concrete bit that is 12” long to take care of your tent peg - you’ll easily find one in the diameter of your pegs. The bit will plow through roots if need be. It’s important that you get the pegs properly seated in the ground in case of high winds or heavy snow loads. The bits are about $15 and can be found at big-box hardware stores. I carry two.

    Well, at least he didnt try to fake backpacking that in... (I HAVE seen others DO that!) Reminds me of my many winter camp outs in the Adk Mtns with our old 10X12 canvas family cabin tent, but I had a different propane heater, a chrome kinda upright lampshade facing sideways with 2 screens that had the flame between them, that mounted directly to the tank. The tent and that tank are both long gone, but I still have that heater. Ya know, with that pre packaged wood & all, you shoulda at least used a flame thrower to lite the camp fire!. BTW, DULL side of the foil toward the food! The shiny side is bare aluminum, Very Unhealthy! The dull side is anodized. Get some of those buffer pads they put under furniture legs to protect that tent floor. NICE setup!! Jerry.

    What a great tent! Wouldn't want to set it up just for an overnighter, that's for sure, but for an extended stay, wow, look super roomy and comfy! A bit of glamping for sure! Truck camping is the way to go for the most comfortable experience. You can bring as much of anything you want or need! How about a center support of some kind for the awning that would raise the center high enough to let the snow fall off? You'd have to navigate around it, but maybe worth it? Enjoyed watching all you had to do while you were there. Thanks for sharing! Stay safe and healthy.

    • @BrooksandBirches
      @BrooksandBirches  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks Maggie! It is definitely doable to set it up for an overnighter but once you factor in all the extra gear its a bit much, I like the idea of using it for longer trips and using it as a base camp for some back country backpacking trips. Spend a couple nights in it, go for an overnight adventure somewhere and then come back to it for a day or two etc

    I really enjoyed this one! The editing and camera angles were superb. WTF did you call those hot dogs??? Thanks for the humor-- it showed your "real" side. Stay safe.

      haha thanks mate! You never heard the term Glizzy before?? Don't worry I hadn't until I ate hot dogs in another video before and I got a bunch of comments about me "gobbling glizzies"

    With such a nice spacious new tent I feel like you need the big buddy heater, man. The one you have is good, but you'll heat the space much faster and more efficiently with the step up of what you've got!

    I have the similar tent in the Kodiac 10 x14 version. I absolutely love it after I installed the stove Jack and wood stove. I only use the 8” lag screws as well

    One more thing that needs its own comment: ICE IS POTENTIALLY DEADLY! You are ALONE. You need a pair of self rescue picks. Like a short ice pick to gouge into the ice to pull yourself out. NEED to be READY to USE NOW if you go thru! NOT a joke! I went thru in 15' of water while ice fishing, and would not be here if I had been alone! I have NEVER gone out on ANY frozen pond or lake since. Nor WILL I !! EVER!! We were a LONG way from home, and a car heater just DONT cut it!! Jerry

    That big canvas tent brings back fond memories. Heck of a base camp setup Rob. Up to you, but Mr. Buddy sells a filter if you are going to use a hose to supply that heater with fuel.
    Enjoyed the video. 👍👍

    Nice shelter but I don’t like that awning design! It’s a rain and snow catcher .

    • @BrooksandBirches
      @BrooksandBirches  2 роки тому +1

      I like it for sitting out under but I definitely think I need to play around with it a little more to find a way to let the water and snow run off, it's be interesting to test it in the rain

    Hey Rob - "How's it going?" Is this your new back packing tent? Glad you had your truck nearby to move the tent for you. I have to admit, it is a nice tent and has plenty of room in it. Does it come with ability to add a second bedroom? Bush Crafting Deluxe! Enjoyed the video. Nice to have the creature comforts once in a while. Have a great day. Regards, Randy in Arizona

    I have the Cabela's cot xl too rated for 400 lbs. Pain in the ass to put together but great for man & 🐕 dog.
    I'm from Glasgow Scotland and even though I don't glamp camp like a Brit, I use it under a Teton XL tent & a tarpaulin in British Columbia Canada on the 50th parallel

    What a great Rob camp, it looks like you're going to stay to live in the forest. LOL. I really like that type of store, although what horrifies me is having to pick it up. A good video friend, with a new and great material, of which I am happy. A warm hug
