I remember my eyes locking onto someone’s And Justice For All Metallica shirt in my sociology class. It’s an album that I have lots of sentiment toward, so I complimented the shirt. The next thing I heard was “Please don’t ask me what my favorite song is. I don’t know any.” I don’t even partake in elitist behavior but that threw me off hardcore and I felt irked by the reply to my compliment because I had hopes of an interesting conversation to kill time. So I agree that elitism is a necessary evil. There are actual posers that I’d honestly be entertained to see get called out. I hate there music. I will listen to Emperor and Nightwish before I listen to the other two. At this point you can take this two ways. You can take it as me having my own personal taste is music or you can be butt hurt about it. We all have are own personal tastes in music, movies, books, and so on. I knew a guy who hated anything that wasn't metal and also REALLY shit on people who like glam/hair metal. Your points were right in the sense that he was just so honed in on what he liked that everyone else around him was wrong and their music taste was shit. Personally (I'm gonna get kicked for saying this), I think bashing someone for having a different taste in music is silly in any scenario. At the end of the day, music is flowing words with sounds behind them, and different people like different ways the words are said and the different ways the sounds are made. I like the metal community and I like feeling part of something cool and fun, but I hate seeing a lot of people throwing hurtful and pointless words at someone who enjoys hiphop or EDM.
Yeah man, elitism is tribalism. It's an essence of our primitive brains where we choose one tribe and in order to "survive" we have to follow the trends and rules of our tribe to grow strong as a group. But in today's age it can be limiting due to the fact that we can all learn from eachother...
I tend to look at it as more of a challenge. "Oh, you think Slipknot is hardcore? Here's some Artery Eruption!" Getting called a poseur started getting me digging deeper, reading up on the history (which got me finding new bands as I traced different members' careers), and falling in love with deeper and darker things, questioning myself so I know who I am. If I saw myself back when I was a core kid now, I'd shit on him.
I've seen it more as who do I want to associate with and for how often. Granted, hearing my music sucks gets me to check out more bands than people kissing my ass to listen to their demos. But pissing off when told to has lead to fewer problems.
Matt Hafley I remember in middle school where I would just listen to a lot of mainstream hip hop and hung with the ghetto crowd then through my freshmen to Junior year of high school to come off as "different" I hung with the emo/scene crowd and would listen to grunge, heavy metal, punk rock, and emo but, I found my former emo/scene friends were by far more close minded than my hood friends as if you show them a hip hop song they will say a racially charged comment rather than listen to the song to see if they like or not if you say I prefer Pearl Jam's music than Nirvana's I just find their music overrated and find Chris Cornell a better singer than Kurt Cobain I had this one former best friend who got overly defensive and said if it wasn't for Kurt Cobain grunge would never become a popular genre during the early to mid 90's and went on a rant to insult me and say my music taste is trash and how I probably listen to 2Chainz or Kendrick Lamar and from that point on I cut my emo, scene, and metal friends now as a young adult I listen to mainstream hip hop, grunge rock, heavy metal, punk rock, country, emo rap, video game soundtracks and so on and my life couldn't be better.

It doesn't matter the genre or sub genre. If I like a song, then I just like it. I like stuff from Black Sabbath to Linkin Park, Metallica to Impending Doom, Green Day to Lamb Of God, etc. I hate when people bash other genres. Music is created and engagges us to love it because of diversity. Like Beethoven and Mozart played different styles, (Beethoven was baroque and Mozart was classical). Metal isn't just noise... we like to call it music too, right? So this is why metal elitism doesn't make sense. To me, no style of music is "PURE", heavy metal sounds different from black metal, thrash sounds different from death metal, metalcore is different from deathcore, but we like certain things and it is subjective. Neither you and I are correct.

I used to be elitist and hate on metalcore and deathcore, but I'm not gonna lie, I like all that remains, carnifex, suicide silence, and despised icon. you just need to give the genre a chance and you might like it if you give it a try, it's not the best but I like it
Some ppl don't know it, but they're elitists because they have a gigantic ego. But for others, wrongfully labelled elitists, they're just ppl who are so interested about the style they'll spend all their energy and mind on reviewing, commenting and rating albums and bands. Just an e.g., for long, complex reasons, I think Deliverance is easily Opeth's best album. I think anybody's wrong if they pick another. They have the right to 'prefer' another album personally, but Delierance is the best. It's my genuine sentiment, not an ego-trip.
I once was walking with this guy who was in a Metal band and some Metalcore enthusiast that knew him yelled at us stating, "Metal Sucks". One of the most random things that ever happened in my life.

With the example of newer bands like Ne Obliviscaris vs Asking Alexandria.. you have one band who is raw musical talent, vs one who has "metal influences" who can play their instruments. LOL. I enjoyed how you brought up the point that some people didn't have to go through the outcast stage of just liking something apart from the norm, and getting constantly made fun of it.. I think that factor right there creates such an unnecessary hate AND further hypocrisy for those who enter the live metal scene not looking "metal" but thoroughly enjoy the music aspect. Thank you someone said it. I don't like Lamb of God or Slipknot. To me they suck. I do like Emperor, Iced Earth, Epica and Delain. And right there the Lamb of God and Slipknot fans will call me a hater and elitist. All because I don't like there two bands. It's called personal taste.
I think it's weird how so many black metal fans only like black metal. Black metal was so heavily influence by traditonal metal, thrash metal and early death metal so how could you not alos like some of that stuff too?

I get what you're saying man. I do have the same opinion as you in terms of metalcore and all, but that doesn't mean that it's not heavy metal. It's just punk inspired heavy metal, just like some Sludge Metal is punk inspired Doom Metal. I am personally a fan of Doom Metal, and that's most of what I listen to, but I don't think it's supreme over all other subgenres of metal. I listen to My Dying Bride, Mournful Congregation and Evoken more than any other band, but I still love Viking Metal, Celtic Metal, Death Metal, so on and so forth. I love Amon Amarth, Eluveitie, Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel and so on. So, yeah, I definitely see what you're saying.
I love heavy metal, but because my hearing is so sensitive that the high pitches in thunder is very annoying to me..this is the same reason why I don't listen to Black metal. The high pitches in the front man 's voice can cause pain my ears..So,I'm becoming a fan of Symphonic Black Metal..Does this make me an elitist? . I'd never tell a black metal fan that symphonic Black metal is better than trad Black Metal. This isn't in my personality at all. When I'm asked " do you like black metal?" I'll say "no" then I'll explain why I don't care for Black metal...

I'm a fan of a lot of metalcore myself, and I see it as a subgenre of metal just like the others. Your comparison with video games is pretty much the reason I cringe whenever people try to dictate what is and isn't "metal". Do I think there should be a more visible line? I guess so, it doesn't really matter to me. But this kind of elitism is what hurts the community and makes it look bad.

see I'm pretty elitist about what metal i like but i think discrediting music based on elitism is ridiculous. Monster Girl it’s because adjusting is difficult sometimes but necessary. What I mean is these problems come with age, as we get older and the artists stay the same age it’s sometimes difficult to give them the respect you gave the first older artists. It’s a question I’ll ask you, would you care what someone who is younger than you has to say and can they inspire you just as your favorite artists have? Again it’s not easy but necessary.

Personally, I don't hate modern metal, modern music or whatever. I like quite a few modern metal, rock and even pop bands/artists. There are some metal genres I dislike - such as black and death metal - but I don't go around spitting. Even though they're not my thing, I still respect the bands and those who listen to them. But... When a bunch of *emo* guys start crying about how miserable and misunderstood they are, tattoo their arms, put on a tank top and emo hair, and call themselves metal, I get pissed. Metalcore bands like Bring Me The Horizon and Asking Alexandria, various nü-metal acts, Marilyn Manson, Black Veil Brides and such. Those aren't metal! Those are posers, usually manufactured by MTV, and marketed as metal toward angsty teens. Boy bands that make even Justin Bieber look manly. There's nothing metal about looking like a lesbian while whining/screaming (not singing) about your broken heart, how depressed you are and unicorns. As a True Metal fan, I wouldn't want to be associated with such bands (and their fanbases for the most part). As the poets say, *DEATH TO FALSE METAL!*

Listening to music doesn't make you belong to any culture. Simple example: I can listen to both deathcore and metal bands, so where do I belong then? Nowhere, and I don't feel the need to associate with any subculture.

I'm a metal elitist and I'm proud. Heavy metal is my entire fucking life, so of course I'm going to have very strong opinions on the matter. I will always support the fight for true metal. If you have something against elitism, it's most likely because you're not as passionate about the style as I am. If you truly loved and cared about heavy metal, you'd want to keep it true.

Black Metal is the most elite, the most inaccessible and the most abrasive style, bar none, but for anyone to say it's the only real metal, well, they best be trolling. And how I always approach this is from the perspective of how I grew up with it. I did most of the work for myself, found the bands I loved myself, went to shows alone because I didn't know anyone else into it. And when I did meet the guys who were older/more knowledgeable than me I was taught of the genre from their perspective, and so my view is definitely influenced by the old school. And for all these younger kids now who don't really appreciate the etiquette of the scene and act with a "Who gives a flying fuck what people think about my vest/favourite band/clothing" But then, when they get called out for looking/acting fruity they get angry about it and make vlogs about asshole elitists that ruined their night. Well, really, can you blame the group of people wearing boots, bullets, inverted crosses, leather jackets for harassing the false that show up in a vest with green day, my chemical romance and the used sewn proudly beside a Burzum, Venom or even Iron Maiden? Matt Hafley I remember in middle school where I would just listen to a lot of mainstream hip hop and hung with the ghetto crowd then through my freshmen to Junior year of high school to come off as "different" I hung with the emo/scene crowd and would listen to grunge, heavy metal, punk rock, and emo but, I found my former emo/scene friends were by far more close minded than my hood friends as if you show them a hip hop song they will say a racially charged comment rather than listen to the song to see if they like or not if you say I prefer Pearl Jam's music than Nirvana's I just find their music overrated and find Chris Cornell a better singer than Kurt Cobain I had this one former best friend who got overly defensive and said if it wasn't for Kurt Cobain grunge would never become a popular genre during the early to mid 90's and went on a rant to insult me and say my music taste is trash and how I probably listen to 2Chainz or Kendrick Lamar and from that point on I cut my emo, scene, and metal friends now as a young adult I listen to mainstream hip hop, grunge rock, heavy metal, punk rock, country, emo rap, video game soundtracks and so on and my life couldn't be better.

Music is created and engagges us to love it because of diversity. Like Beethoven and Mozart played different styles, (Beethoven was baroque and Mozart was classical).
Metal isn't just noise... we like to call it music too, right? So this is why metal elitism doesn't make sense. To me, no style of music is "PURE", heavy metal sounds different from black metal, thrash sounds different from death metal, metalcore is different from deathcore, but we like certain things and it is subjective. Neither you and I are correct.

The amount of soul,various emotions are put into most of the real black metal cant compete with some well produced hot topic metal.
This is why I tend not to involve myself in communities of any kind. You should see people's faces when I say I like Black Metal and JPop

But for others, wrongfully labelled elitists, they're just ppl who are so interested about the style they'll spend all their energy and mind on reviewing, commenting and rating albums and bands. Just an e.g., for long, complex reasons, I think Deliverance is easily Opeth's best album. I think anybody's wrong if they pick another. They have the right to 'prefer' another album personally, but Delierance is the best. It's my genuine sentiment, not an ego-trip.

Oh elitism, the fine line between ignorance and over prideful jerks. I agree, with being a lover of metal, we are sort of guilty of pointing the finger as to what is metal and what isn't.. With the example of newer bands like Ne Obliviscaris vs Asking Alexandria.. you have one band who is raw musical talent, vs one who has "metal influences" who can play their instruments. LOL. I enjoyed how you brought up the point that some people didn't have to go through the outcast stage of just liking something apart from the norm, and getting constantly made fun of it.. I think that factor right there creates such an unnecessary hate AND further hypocrisy for those who enter the live metal scene not looking "metal" but thoroughly enjoy the music aspect. Sort of trying to relieve their past via psychology projection, tsk tsk. People just lack the ability to acknowledge where things originate from, as you mentioned with any topic. In any event happy to see more positive metal supporters out there in the world!

I get what you're saying man. I do have the same opinion as you in terms of metalcore and all, but that doesn't mean that it's not heavy metal. It's just punk inspired heavy metal, just like some Sludge Metal is punk inspired Doom Metal. I am personally a fan of Doom Metal, and that's most of what I listen to, but I don't think it's supreme over all other subgenres of metal. I listen to My Dying Bride, Mournful Congregation and Evoken more than any other band, but I still love Viking Metal, Celtic Metal, Death Metal, so on and so forth. I love Amon Amarth, Eluveitie, Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel and so on. So, yeah, I definitely see what you're saying.
I love heavy metal, but because my hearing is so sensitive that the high pitches in thunder is very annoying to me..this is the same reason why I don't listen to Black metal. The high pitches in the front man 's voice can cause pain my ears..So,I'm becoming a fan of Symphonic Black Metal..Does this make me an elitist? . I'd never tell a black metal fan that symphonic Black metal is better than trad Black Metal. This isn't in my personality at all. When I'm asked " do you like black metal?" I'm a fan of a lot of metalcore myself, and I see it as a subgenre of metal just like the others. Your comparison with video games is pretty much the reason I cringe whenever people try to dictate what is and isn't "metal". Do I think there should be a more visible line? I guess so, it doesn't really matter to me. But this kind of elitism is what hurts the community and makes it look bad.

What I mean is these problems come with age, as we get older and the artists stay the same age it’s sometimes difficult to give them the respect you gave the first older artists. It’s a question I’ll ask you, would you care what someone who is younger than you has to say and can they inspire you just as your favorite artists have? Again it’s not easy but necessary.

Personally, I don't hate modern metal, modern music or whatever. I like quite a few modern metal, rock and even pop bands/artists. There are some metal genres I dislike - such as black and death metal - but I don't go around spitting. Even though they're not my thing, I still respect the bands and those who listen to them. But...
When a bunch of *emo* guys start crying about how miserable and misunderstood they are, tattoo their arms, put on a tank top and emo hair, and call themselves metal, I get pissed. Metalcore bands like Bring Me The Horizon and Asking Alexandria, various nü-metal acts, Marilyn Manson, Black Veil Brides and such. Those aren't metal! Those are posers, usually manufactured by MTV, and marketed as metal toward angsty teens. Boy bands that make even Justin Bieber look manly.
There's nothing metal about looking like a lesbian while whining/screaming (not singing) about your broken heart, how depressed you are and unicorns. As a True Metal fan, I wouldn't want to be associated with such bands (and their fanbases for the most part).

Black Metal is the most elite, the most inaccessible and the most abrasive style, bar none, but for anyone to say it's the only real metal, well, they best be trolling. And how I always approach this is from the perspective of how I grew up with it. I did most of the work for myself, found the bands I loved myself, went to shows alone because I didn't know anyone else into it. And when I did meet the guys who were older/more knowledgeable than me I was taught of the genre from their perspective, and so my view is definitely influenced by the old school.
And for all these younger kids now who don't really appreciate the etiquette of the scene and act with a "Who gives a flying fuck what people think about my vest/favourite band/clothing" But then, when they get called out for looking/acting fruity they get angry about it and make vlogs about asshole elitists that ruined their night. Well, really, can you blame the group of people wearing boots, bullets, inverted crosses, leather jackets for harassing the false that show up in a vest with green day, my chemical romance and the used sewn proudly beside a Burzum, Venom or even Iron Maiden? That's disrespectful to me, subjectively speaking of course. I'm done rambling.
