I thought this would be a really fun video to go over from various perspectives! I'm so hyped to hear your picks and lists for the genres I talk about in this video! Let me know down below your own opinions on both my list as well as your own!!!!!!! But for now, cheers, rock on, stay heavy and have yourselves a fantastic rest of your day or night, depending on when you see this!!!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
... Helo Monsieur, I am french and rather "very" old, I am a big fan (reader) of the "Metal Archives" (yes it smells very strong "The Gatekeepers" lol), but when you are searching about a MetalCore band, NuMetal band, DeathcoreMetal, and some others in the genre, you'll find nobody because they aren't Metal bands (search Korn, SOAD or Linkin Park for ex., you'll never find them)... Bring me the Horison and the like, ha ha ha how I hate those "Tik Tok" bands ... !!! It's for children or young girls !!! Ok I know a lot of poeple will hate me or just ignore me, but is it a problem ? No ... alot of poeple young or old knows what is good Metal Music and that's enough for me !!! Ok you've done a good job in general, greetings !!! Just 2 bands I would have heard about them are Ministry in the Indus. genre and My Dying Bride in the Doom/Goth genre, both are very well known bands in their genre (I love them alot as I love Type O Negative or Rammstein ^^) ... So good job man, Salut !!!
@ I don’t think that, I’m saying that the representation of Europeans compared to elsewhere may be different in each number, so if you only look at Europeans Rammstein may have more listeners
@@TheMetalTempestYTSounds great! If you end up getting to making that video, I do have some predictions in mind, but I’ll keep them to myself for now until then.
I don't mean to be that guy to split hairs , but the grindcore band is Napalm Death. Cattle Decapitation hasn't been a grind band since Human Jerky. They maintain elements of grind even to this day, but they have incorporated elements of other genres and less grind with each subsequent release since.
@@SheogorathReacts I still think КоЯп is the popular choice. For me LINKIN PARK sound is just so broad that I feel like a lot of people don’t associate them with the genre to begin with. With КоЯп they have a South Park episode, they just released a Adidas press run and all the shoes sold out almost instantly. They play narcissistic cannibals at amusement parks. And people remember that band because of the simple name. There’s definitely a case to be made for a lot of other bands like Limp Bizkit and slipknot. I don’t know if there’s a big four for numetal but those four bands definitely are it. I just think when people think of the genre, their mind doesn’t go to LINKIN PARK but again this could just be a me thing and I fully acknowledge that
This is very slightly unrelated to the video. But, I just want to say, I am really glad Acid Bath is growing in popularity, and re-uniting. I do hope this also brings people to listen the members work outside of Acid Bath too. As you know by now, I am a HUGE Dax Riggs fan. He was my pfp at some point.
@ That’s fair, I like “Paegan Terrorism Tactics” personally. But it was quite different from “When The Kite String Pops”. Have you tried any of Dax’s solo work? It isn’t quite metal but it’s cool. Plus, his vocals imo got better after Acid Bath.
I definitely think napalm death are more recognisable than cattle decapitation. As someone who is not really into grind at all, i hear of napalm death way before cattle decapitation. Idk that might just be me though. Loved the video!
That Jim Carrey interview introduced me to Napalm Death, and yeah, it's way more popular than cattle decapitation. At least, for me, I've met more people who heard about Napalm Death than Cattle Decapitation
Yeah, absolutely haha. I had to mention the Jim thing, still crazy that happened. Can definitely get Napalm being the pick here. :] and I had a hunch most would say that lol and that's 100% valid
Rammstein is like the biggest production on the road right now. They’re massive. And as a German I can definitely say that „no metalheads” won’t know the other Industrial Metal bands. Rammstein is like the biggest band here from Europe.
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure they're death metal. they definitely gained a lot of new fans since that performance. I remember watching the Spotify numbers skyrocket
I agree with ALOT of these, i have a bias to Rob Zombie and Electric Wizard cause i love their music, but even though you didn't pick them I still agree with your picks 100%. This was a really great videooooo!!!! Had alot of fun watching! you are very knowledgeable :)
The fact that I (someone that listens to metal but has never plunged that deep into subgenres and different bands) could guess what you were gonna pick for (almost) every subgenre, means that your picks were excellent, truly encapsulating how popular those bands are/were
Yeah, I think Darkthrone would probably be a really good pick for most popular black metal band. Personally I'd probably say: Darkthrone, Mayhem, Emperor, Satyricon or Dimmu Borgir in terms of names people know if I had to throw a few more names out there. Satyricon has charted in the Nordics several times, reaching number 1 even, and have been around since the early-mid 90s to boot.
I disagree, I don't think tons of casuals or non metal fans could name korn over Linkin park I agree they're considered nu metal gods within metal though
Of course. Rammstein is one of the biggest metal bands ever and only growing in popularity while the rest kinda dying out (except MM who's lately been re-surging but makes more goth-rock now).
Wonderful video! Since you're assessing them based on public prolificness, considering whether or not the band sees radio play is a good litmus test. I've hear Pantera on the radio most from the groove list, easily. Same with Tool and even Rammstein (even though its just Du Hast 99% of the time...). And has anyone EVER heard Anthrax on the radio in the past decade? It's nonstop Metallica...
I think Metalcore has to be Bring Me The Horizon, just the sheer numbers they have and the collabs with bigger non-rock/Metal artists like Ed Sheeran and Lil Uzi Vert, and standing the test of time from being the MySpace-core band from the UK to a known act that people flock to see.
Eyyy Agalloch is nice to end it on :) I really agree with almost everyone of these! And most of the ones I don´t agree with are the ones where I would´ve chosen the other of your two alternatives, like SOAD over Deftones and Death over Cannibal Corpse. One band I would throw in (even though their discography changes quite a bit) is Avenged Sevenfold for Metalcore. They are also a band that goes soooo far outside the metal scene in terms of popularity. I know so many people that are not into metal at all but they like or have at least heard of Avenged Sevenfold, it´s insane. A lot of my friends also got into metal because of them, including myself to some degree. Also the whole industrial metal debate I feel is more in the US! If you include Europe, it´s Rammstein without a question. I don´t think I know a single person who hasn´t heard Du Hast! And that might be because I´m from Sweden and metal is really big here, but I think most of europeans will agree on this one. And some personal picks for me would be Opeth for prog (even though they are not as big as Tool and Dream Theater, they have kept reinventing themselfs which is what prog is all about imo) and Necrophagist for tech-death (just slappin) :)
@axel90000 i just don’t think it’s funny because at the time he was in a very bad mental and physical state, I mean he was literally molested when he was a kid, so that’s enough to break anyone, plus I just don’t laugh at overweight people
I would've actually gone with korn for nu metal as they essentially defined what metal was for the entire 90s and was still huge throughout the 2000s, but I agree there really isn't a "correct" answer. For industrial, even outside of the controversies and stunts, you still regularly hear his cover of sweet dreams in mainstream Hollywood movies and TV shows almost 30 years later. The beautiful people is also played regularly on the radio and occasionally in TV shows as well. So I'd give him the inch for industrial's most well known over the others (though just an inch).
My favorite music genres were Nu Metal and Alternative Metal. Besides Slipknot, some lesser-known but great nu metal bands include Nonpoint, Spineshank, SOiL, Nothingface, Kittie, 40 Below Summer, and Dry Kill Logic. For alternative metal, I enjoy Three Days Grace, Thousand Foot Krutch (I know it's Christian), Downplay, Hoobastank, and Breaking Benjamin. They really draw me in. There are also many small nu metal bands apart from the well-known ones.
I loved your video proposal and the discussion it generates! Congratulations. But I can safely say that the way of seeing metal in the United States (yours, I believe), in Europe, and in Latin America (mine, I'm Brazilian) is slightly different. And I think that's wonderful. Here, there are bands that are practically sacred, like Iron Maiden, Blind Guardian and (obviously) Sepultura. BMTH is without a doubt the biggest Metalcore here. Folk Metal is really strong (just like in Europe), Rammstein is the symbol of industrial and they would even invent a "melodic metal" or something like that just to include a beloved Brazilian band called "Angra".
I know I'm from the 80s, but to not give Queensryche even a mention in Prog Metal is a shame. Also, no Traditional Metal, No Glam...wtf? Also, please don't consider Glam Metal and Hair Metal as the same thing, they are not. Also, alot of the 80s stuff was before we had all of these sub genres. The sub genres are out of control almost. Whats next? Doom Core? Symphonic Sludge? Hmmmm.....
A cannot argue with your list. 23:16 A few more genres (or maybe sub genres) were missed. Pirate Metal (Visions of Atlantis). Cinematic Metal (Dark Sarah). Melodic Metal. Atlantean Metal (Imperial Age). Dwarf Metal ( Wind Rose), to name afew. I admit they are rather obscure flavours of metal, so not a criticism. Rather interesting at how many times something can be divided and re-divided.
Death Metal: Death (metalheads), Cannibal Corpse (curious metal bystanders). Metalcore: ...? Groove Metal: Pantera no contest. Black Metal: Darkthrone. Nu Metal: Korn. Prog Metal: Tool,100%. Deathcore: Lorna Shore. Alt Metal: SOAD. Heavy Metal:Sabbath. Thrash: Metallica. Doom/Gothic: Type O (I do love Woods of Ypres above all here, but they're one of my favourite bands, period). Power Metal: Dragonforce, I'll agree. Sabbaton....I didn't know the general public listened to them. Symphonic Metal: Nightwish. Grindcore: Carcass (early). Industrial Metal: Nine Inch Nails. They were absolutely massive in the 90s, including in the mainstream. Sludge Metal: ??? My favourite genre is Melodic Death Metal, I'd put In Flames above all (even though they fell out for a while there, they have somewhat returned to form & still play a good amount of MDM live). I'm nearly 50 and have listened to metal since age 15, late 80s/early 90s. Faith No More, Soundgarden, Slayer, Sepultura, Carcass is the path I took going in. 🤘🤘
Given what I somewhat recently found out, Lorna Shore is a lot older than people realize starting up in 2009! But no I fully agree they're one of if not THE most recognizable names in deathcore rn! Shadow of Intent, Whitechapel, and Brand of Sacrifice imo are FOR SURE up there tho
You really put some effort in this, and i appreciate it. Here's a thought when it comes to Black Metal popularity: wouldn't stuff like Dimmu Borgir or Cradle of Filth outnumber Darkthrone massively in the mainstream? Also - what is this annoying sound in the background? It was a pain at times.
Sharks In Your Mouth is a great metalcore band. So is For Today. Behemoth and Belphegor are two standout black metal bands. Korn are a great nu metal band. Lorna Shore are the best deathcore band. System of a Down all day. Black Sabbath are the fathers of metal. Metallica for thrash. Type O Negative rock. HammerFall and DragonForce. Please mention Nightwish for symphonic metal. Napalm Death are great, so are Cattle Decapitation. Ministry and Rammstein. You did forget to mention Carnifex for deathcore. The Melvins are great.
I feel like we need to do away with the deathcore title for some bands because Lorna Shore, Shadow of Intent, and Job for a Cowboy really blur the lines between multiple subgenres.
Great overall list and all your selections make sense to me. I think my biggest difference would be Korn for Nu-Metal. I also agree that Black Sabbath is the right pick for Heavy Metal but my heart says Iron Maiden.
As a symphonic metal fan, I agree Nightwish has to be the pick for the genre, even though they are not my favourite band, honestly not even close. Epica has a much smaller fan base, but they are by far my favourite, both because they are on the heavier side, and because they spend time and energy on creating shows like their recent "The Symphonic Synergy" shows in Amsterdam and Mexico City
Haven't watched yet, let me predict Traditional: Iron Maiden Thrash: Metallica (Duh) Death: Cannibal Corpse Black: Mayhem Gothic: Type O Negative Grindcore: Napalm Death Symphonic: Nightwish Power: Helloween Blackgaze: Deafheaven Deathcore: Suicide Silence or Whitechapel Metalcore: Killswitch Engage or As I Lay Dying Drone: Sunn O))) Prog: Dream Theater Alternative: Primus???? Groove:Pantera Folk: Alestorm Sludge: Acid Bath Electronic metal:Bring Me The Horizon Nu Metal: Linkin Park Rap Metal: Rage Against the Machine Glam: Motley Crue Doom: Black Sabbath Industrial: Nine Inch Nails DSBM: Xasthur baddiecore lol: Bad Omens Kawaii metal: Babymetal The last 2 are obviously not seriously. But hope I'm right
@@TheMetalTempestYTmy definition of alternative metal is horrible. It's honestly a bit of an umbrella term, I dunno if I wanna call Sabbath doom over trad. But I dunno. Also the type O one is correct. Definitely.
For all of these my answer was pretty easy. Death metal: Cannibal Corpse. They're the prototypical band of how normies view death metal and even some think all metal is when it comes to sound and imagery, plus the Ace Ventura cameo has done a lot. Metalcore: Bring Me The Horizon. Sheer numbers are insane, they did experiment with more accessable sounds but came back to it with the Post Human series of albums. Plus they're still playing songs even from the days of Count Your Blessings to sold out stadiums. Groove metal: Pantera. The sheer influence they've had on metal ever since and they're the reason why many bands (including Sepultura) tried hopping on the genre, and DIme changed guitar forever since then. Plus they're known as the heaviest band to ever chart #1 on Billboard, that says enough. Black metal: Behemoth. They're the first band I've heard of when it comes to anything close to black metal, and the numbers don't lie. They are blackened death but they did definitely reach the middle ground of having a sound that is more accessable than the 90's Norwegian stuff but still having the same larger than life intimidating satanic imagery, unlike other bands that have gone in the more symphonic/melodic route that don't have this threatening character. However if we have to stick with the OG Norwegian black metal it's gotta be Mayhem, the story has now reached huge noteriaty even in normie spaces, being covered by normie true crime youtubers and of course... Lords Of Chaos (say what you will about its accuracy). Nu metal: Slipknot. Even when the genre passed its popularity stage they've always stayed relevant throughout the years, which is something you can't say about other nu metal bands, that alone sets it apart and made it an easy answer for me. Plus the fact sound wise it's some of the least accessable bands in the genre yet it pulls such numbers, compared to Linkin Park which always had this accessability to it. Prog metal: Tool. You said it best, plus they do have a quite varied fanbase which also includes people who are not typically into prog, I know people who are into various forms of alternative rock that are really into Tool and would not like any other kind of prog. Deathcore: Lorna Shore. For a genre that's based on an arms race of who's the most brutal and who plays the heaviest breakdowns the fact they reached #4 on Spotify's viral charts says a lot! The only OG that came close to that is Whitechapel, with Our Endless War reaching #10 on Billboard. Alternative metal: System Of A Down. They've been the kings of it since the day they entered the scene, both Serj and Daron are incredibly charismatic and with a sound so unique they've gotten a bunch of fans from all different metal backgrounds. While Deftones are having a ressurgence among Tiktok alternative kids System Of A Down also have more well known songs purely numbers wise OG heavy metal: Ozzy. The godfathers of the genre of course, and I know enough people who are not metalheads at all and are fans of Black Sabbath or Ozzy's solo material. He's a star beyond all stars with so much well known lore and even an incredible reality show too :) Gothic metal: Cradle Of Filth. They're pretty much what people think all goths are, aesthetics and culture wise. Plus the numbers don't lie. Doom metal: Black Sabbath, again. Foor the same reason I mentioned about Ozzy earlier. Thrash metal: well... Power metal: Dragonforce. Purely because of Guitar Hero they'e done so much for such a niche nerdy genre and still getting numbers much bigger than pretty much any other power metal band. Symphonic metal: Nightwish. Non have combined opera and metal in such extreme ways and with such success, you've said it best. Grindcore: Napalm Death. Everything from the Jim Carrey praise, the John Peel exposure and BBC TV appearences, and the feature on the Mortal Kombat movie OST, and the fact they're doing such huge numbers for a genre so underground. An also it's one of the only bands I can think of where going more extreme gave them more popularity an attempts at commercialization never brought in new fans. And also it's the only band I can think of that have been making music since the 80's with their new material being just as good if not even better, that's rare! Though Carcass might also be an honorable mention for the success of their non Grind stuff and the mention on Friends. Also, Cattle Decap are not grindcore, they're brutal death. Maybe Deathgrind. Industrial metal: Marilyn Manson. The man himself is larger than his own music for all the wrong reasons lol. Sludge: Melvins. They have the numbers, they have both the punk cred and the metal cred which is something rare even at a genre which combines punk and metal like Sludge.
Absolutely agree with your take on death metal. While Death was the OG and the namesake of the sub-genre, they actually were a very experimental band and shifted away from what death metal became and explored other avenues. Cannibal Corpse is the quintessential death metal band these days, both in terms of their popularity, staying power and consistency. Likewise I agree with your take on Metalcore, it's such a broad genre that picking one or two bands to represent it is simply impossible. I figured you'd pick Killswitch Engaged if you were forced to pick but honestly staying with none would have been the better conclusion Imho. As far as Groove metal goes, very easy indeed. Pantera, simple as that, no further elaboration needed. Sepultura and Lamb of God are a stretch, they both did Groove metal, in combination with other sub-genres, but neither ever got as big and popular as Pantera. Black metal is a very tough one, again a very broad sub-genre with many different scenes and sub-sub-genres inside it. I agree that it's definitely not Venom, Bathory nor King Diamond. To me Black metal as we know it today begun with Mayhem, Emperor, Dark Throne, Immortal, etc, not those bands, but are they really the most popular Black metal bands? Not really, no. I'd say bands like Dimmu Borgir are actually significantly more popular than any of the early second wave Norwegian Black metal bands. With that said Dimmu Borgir is not a pure Black metal band but a Symphonic Black metal band so I fully understand why you didn't talk about them. Cradle of Filth is also incredibly popular but even more so than Dimmu Borgir they aren't fully Black metal, if at all. As many people see them as Black metal adjacent. I'd argue that Nu-Metal is actually a rather small sub-genre of metal that is grossly misunderstood. I don't really consider bands like Limp Bizkit, System of a Down, Linkin' Park, etc, as Nu-Metal despite becoming popular during that same era and Imho mistakenly being labeled as such. To me Nu-Metal is early Korn, plain and simple. Other bands like Slipknot, Disturbed, etc, certainly had songs that were very much Nu-Metal but they also have songs that are very far away from it. Speaking of System of a Down, they are *the* Alternative metal band, not Nu-Metal. Progressive *metal* to me has to be Dream Theater. Tool is in right on that line between Progressive rock and Progressive metal, so I'm really uncomfortable using them as the representative Progressive metal band. For Deathcore I definitely agree with Lorna Shore over say Suicide Silence as I agree with you that the modern Deathcore bands have outshone the OGs to the point where today most people know the newer Deathcore bands a lot more than the older ones. Yeah, I strongly disagree with Deftones over System of a Down. Non metal heads listened to a ton of Chop Suey, Aerials, Toxicity, etc, on the radio for years and years. It's arguably *the* metal band across all the metal sub-genres that has most mainstream(as in non metal fans) appeal. I'm sorry but Black Sabbath isn't Heavy metal! It's Doom metal... Heavy metal is very close between Iron Maiden and Judas Priest but ultimately there is only one right answer and that is Iron Maiden. Yeah, Thrash metal is absolutely Metallica. Many metalheads would say Slayer instead but in terms of overall popularity there is no other choice but Metallica. No idea why you mixed Doom metal with Gothic metal, the two are very different... For Doom metal as I said above it's Black Sabbath hands down. Gothic metal is a much tougher one but your choice of Type O Negative is certainly a good one. For Power metal it really depends on who you're talking to. For Americans/Canadians it's certainly Dragonforce, for anyone outside of North America, and especially Europeans, than Blind Guardian, Rhapsody, Stratovarius, etc, would be a much better choice. Not sure what Sabaton is even doing there as it's not at all a Power metal band... Not even Power metal adjacent. Also why did you not mention Dio and Rainbow...? Yeah Symphonic metal is absolutely Nightwish. They're still the biggest name in the sub-genre and others like Within Temptation have shied away from Symphonic metal altogether and now have a completely different style. Epica would be the closest alternative to Nightwish but as much as I love Epica they are still significantly less popular than Nightwish, especially in non metal spheres. Not sure why Grindcore is even in this discussion considering it's one of those very niche metal sub-genres that people outside of metal don't have a clue what it even is. As you said, Napalm Death did indeed breach into the mainstream, but the mainstream doesn't even know they're a Grindcore band as they have no clue what Grindcore is... Yeah your top 4 for Industrial metal is spot on. I agree that NIN is the least popular of those 4 and that both Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie have achieved celebrity status but are known as a celebrity much more than they are known as Industrial metal musicians. Therefore it has to be Rammstein. Sludge metal, just like Grindcore, shouldn't really be on this list.
this appeared on my fyp lmao, and i was like yeah okay. for metalcore, i kinda hoped youd say parkway drive or i prevail tbh- disappointed but not surprised. Parkway has been around for like 40 years and a lot of people i know dont even them(considering we’re in Australia, id expect them to know Parkway lol)
*Heyo mate:* how're u doing? I just want to let u know I have *my own* "mainly" industrial/nu-metal project known as Sins of the Scales: we're on Spotify and UA-cam music ~ I need especially a drummer, a bassist, and mayhaps a background/second vocalist especially for the "band"/project hmu if you're interested /for more information! >;3 🤘 🐉 🤙 🦘
*Mayhaps* I should've been more clear in my previous comment/reply; I'm the founding member of Sins of the Scales (my band/project I mentioned previously) and I'm looking for new/other band members. So; if you're at all interested in working with me pls hmu. 👍
@@TheMetalTempestYT *Heyo Alex;* I think we were actually talking about "all that" before at one point ~ do u have Instagram and/or X AKA: "The Bird App" by any chance homie?❔️❓️
*Ngl* for industrial metal I'd pick Ministry if I'm being honest with myself; if it wasn't for them Nine Inch Nails probably wouldn't have even been a thought in T Reznor's head circa 1988-1989. 🤘
I love Amon Amarth & Arch Enemy, but Melodeath should go to In Flames. Not only are they one of the original Gothenberg bands that defined that subgenre, they actually do have more monthly listeners on apps like Spotify than either of those other two bands.
Limp Bizkit THE Nu Metal band!? IMO, the obvious answer is KoRn. Arguably the band that defined the genre, and one of the very first bands of the genre... and had success before any of the other bands mentioned... and helped launch Limp Bizkit. Not giving it to KoRn is bad enough, not even mentioning them is worse. 😂 //I agree with Rammstein. They are so huge, they sell out arenas all over the world to this day. In many ways they are arguably one of the biggest metal acts of all time. Normies that dont fuck with metal otherwise get down with Rammstein. They have consistently been one of the biggest acts in metal for a quarter of a century. The number of souls on this rock that has never heard "Du Hast" and dont live under a rock are easily counted... whereas if we take "Hurt" by NIN, most think its a Cash original. Also, NIN are effin' boring live. Manson was huge in the latter half of the 90s and early 2000s then he sorta fell off. Consistent worldwide recognition, has to be Rammstein.
Combining gothic and doom feels like a cop-out, Candlemass and Sleep (who are probably the biggest doom bands) do not have much stylistic overlap with gothic metal other than "slow and atmospheric" (which I'd argue their atmospheres are substantially different). Doom's distinction from gothic metal becomes more apparent when you consider bands like Solitude Aeturnus, Pentagram, Cirith Ungol, Pallbearer, Witchcraft, etc.
Honestly, I was trying to approach things from a way to include both! Since I feel as if I wanted to be basic, I could say black sabbath for doom. But when it comes to the average non-metal listener, Type O's name and legacy really permeates on both of those genres. Keep in mind, it's not just about metalhead's opinions solely in terms of what I tried to base this off of. But that's absolutely fair.
I know that for black metal fans it is hard to swallow, but the most popular band in that genre would be Dimmu Borgir (name dropped by Demi Lovato) or Cradle of Filth (name dropped in IT crowd) sns
I definitely agree with Cattle Decapitation and Rammstein. Rammstein is a huge live band. I would have switched out NIN for Ministry. Ministry is now a full-fledged industrial metal band. NIN really isn't industrial metal except for Broken and a few songs here and there from other albums.
Deftones 🤘 Type O Negative 🤘agree ! (Peter Steele of TON, will we ever see and hear a literally giant metal god with a voice like a massive sea ship horn again?)
KoRn is by far the most populair Nu Metal band and it's crazy that you didn't pick them. Also I don't think BFMV belongs in the "Scene" Metalcore genre but in the classical.
Although Rammstein, Marilyn Manson, and Rob Zombie are bigger in terms of listeners, when I think Industrial metal they don’t usually come to mind as much as other bands like Nine Inch Nails and Ministry. Rob Zombie, Rammstein, and Marilyn Manson seem more alternative metal to me with some slight industrial influences.
My 80 y/o parents know about Cannibal Corpse through the media and all of the controversy they created over the years. They never heard about Death, except through my T-shirts.
Cool vid but I gotta veto the Grindcore pick. I’m not sold on Cattle Decap being grindcore (or grindcore enough) to accurately represent that scene. I do agree in the last 15 years they’ve seen huge growth and have an enormous reach online. But the records you pointed to that are grabbing the average Joe’s attention who don’t keep their ear to the ground on this stuff barely have grindcore on them. Especially the last two. I can see a case for grind elements being present on Monolith but the last 3 are taking from black metal and combining it with brutal death metal, in my eyes. There’s a much stronger case for their deathgrind status on records like Harvest Floor, Karma.Bloody.Karma and then obviously the first 2. But yea picking Cattle Decap as the most popular grindcore band is like picking Cradle of Filth as the most popular black metal band. Thats not a slight against the bands, it just feels like they don’t quite accurately match up. And I’d have to go Napalm Death here.
That's absolutely valid and I can understand a lot of these points. realistically, cattle decap's deathgrind style always seemed to steadily grow even more popular. and in the same way their sound has diverged, there was that whole timeline of Napalm Death's mid catalogue of practically becoming a death metal band for lack of better terms. Napalm's obviously the pick most would make.
Nu metal usually have a lot of rap, hip-hop influence, industrial influence as well as some funk at points. Electronic stuff can be found in it a lot of times with DJ scratching/electro-parts in general. Alt-metal can be harsher, have more distorted guitars. More grunge influence. More harsh vocals. You hear it lumped in with post-grunge as a lot of the bands like Staind, Saliva, Breaking Benjamin etc have a general vibe that is close to those bands. Cheers :]
This was a fun video. That being said, who was the most “fun” Metal band? I love bands in all these genres but for a smiling good time, STATIC-X. The older the better.
with metalcore i think more of falling in reverse, for the normy area, how much they took over social media. As far as nu metal goes, I don't know how we have this discussion without KoRn.
Honestly, that's valid in terms of KoRn! I just saw them pretty similar to NiN for industrial metal--very well known, but also offputting to a widespread audience. when it comes to the aesthetic/influence of nu-metal, i tried to look at what defined that generation.
I'd pick them over all the other ones in the video, but they're really not the first name that comes to mind when you talk about industrial metal (to the average person at least).
First of all, Death does not represent the death metal genre because the majority of Death’s discography is not death metal. First three albums yes, the rest of it definitely not. Last 4 albums are more of a prog thing. I’m saying all of this as a very big Death fan. Second of all, “more technical” doesn’t apply here either, cause the only area where Death is more technical is drums; when it comes to guitar riffs some of CC albums showcase things waaaay harder and faster than Death ever had. And lastly, Cannibal Corpse maintained one of the most important aspects of death metal genre- death growl. Again, I fucking love Chuck’s banshee vocals, but that’s not what comes to your mind when you think “death metal vocals” - it’s death growl. So yeah, Cannibal Corpse is a superior death metal band just for the reason it’s much more death metal than Death.
Alot of people conflate popular for influential. Lets take metalcore for example. Most popular. Could absolutely say Killswitch. I agree with you. Most influential and who I think influenced most band members in metalcore bands to play in the genre and those in the die hard fan base? Converge. This applies to every genre.
I love killswitch engage but avenged sevenfold should have been the one for metalcore, their influence alone through cod should be enough for them to, ive even heard people who dont listen to metal be a big fan
it is not a hot take to say cannibal corpse is the most famous death metal band lmao. from their ace ventura appearance to seeing cannibal corpse shirts almost as much as you see slipknot and gojira shirts, they definitely have a reputation among normies, whereas death is just not known if you aren't into metal.
I feel like cannibal corpse is probably the one death metal band the average normie could name off the top of their head but I think Gojira is probably the overall most popular death metal band.
I thought this would be a really fun video to go over from various perspectives! I'm so hyped to hear your picks and lists for the genres I talk about in this video!
So good job man, Salut !!!
nu metal - Korn
My favourite nu metal: SOAD
Most successful nu metal: Linkin Park
Most metal nu metal: Slipknot
Most "traditional" nu metal: Korn
I dont think sk is nu metal but yeah
@lucky_charmT it is lol
good nu metal bands:
1.
2.
3.
@lucky_charmT first album was mostly nu metal, second maybe 50%, and then no
Most overrated by metal: Linkin Park
If you're European, Rammstein is about as popular as the rest of metal combined
pretty much, you will encounter a bunch of "normies" that say they dont listen to metal at all but are big rammstein fans lol
System of a down alone has double the listeners of rammstein on spotify
@@leventegyorgydeak1300they’re specifying in Europe..
@@LMay11037 So? Do you think only americans listen to spotify? Im european and much more of my friends listen to soad than rammstein
@ I don’t think that, I’m saying that the representation of Europeans compared to elsewhere may be different in each number, so if you only look at Europeans Rammstein may have more listeners
I have an idea for a video. Can you do a most popular *song* in each metal subgenre?
Ooh, that would be a LOT of fun! I'd love to!!
@@TheMetalTempestYTSounds great! If you end up getting to making that video, I do have some predictions in mind, but I’ll keep them to myself for now until then.
@@TheMetalTempestYT Another one would be the most underrated on each subgenre.
@@TheMetalTempestYTyou suffer for Grindcore
I don't mean to be that guy to split hairs , but the grindcore band is Napalm Death. Cattle Decapitation hasn't been a grind band since Human Jerky. They maintain elements of grind even to this day, but they have incorporated elements of other genres and less grind with each subsequent release since.
Also Napalm Death is THE Grindcore band. If you mention it Napalm Death is the first band that comes to mind.
Oh yeah. I love old and new Cattle Decapitation. Love their grind years, love their death metal years.
I was wondering how cattle decap was grindcore, thanks!
For Nu Metal I gotta say КоЯп
Popular not what you think is the best
I agree
KoЯn
I just think when people think of the genre, their mind doesn’t go to LINKIN PARK but again this could just be a me thing and I fully acknowledge that
For true nu metal I absolutely agree.
Was searching for something like this
This is very slightly unrelated to the video. But, I just want to say, I am really glad Acid Bath is growing in popularity, and re-uniting. I do hope this also brings people to listen the members work outside of Acid Bath too. As you know by now, I am a HUGE Dax Riggs fan. He was my pfp at some point.
Also, random question, but do you like Rozz Williams? I have been a fan for six years now.
They kinda sucked after their first album imo, they went from sludge to stoner it seemed
Napalm Death is also directly mentioned in the Guilty Gear video game series.
also i would say that cattle decapitation is deathgrind not grindcore
Woooop I opened youtube and this video popped up perfect timing
Yay!! Hope you enjoy it man! :D
Fun and interesting video, thanks for this TheMetalTempest!
Great list overall. I've been into metal since the late 80s, but I learned some things. Earned a subscribe from me.
Omg this was such a fun video to watch!😁 I totally agree with you especially on Black Metal, you literally read my mind. A great video as always! 🖤
Rammstein is like the biggest production on the road right now. They’re massive. And as a German I can definitely say that „no metalheads” won’t know the other Industrial Metal bands. Rammstein is like the biggest band here from Europe.
I am a simple man. I see Darkthrone, I click. Fun video!
Ayo new Metal Tempest video. Say less, imma watch. Also this is my first comment on one of your vids I believe.
ayy, thank you so much! happy to have you here!!
What genre is Gojira, because I think with the recent Olympics performance and subsequent Grammy nomination they should be in a discussion somewhere?
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure they're death metal. they definitely gained a lot of new fans since that performance. I remember watching the Spotify numbers skyrocket
One of the coolest thing about metal in general, it's never about how popular the band is. it's all about how sick their music is.
how accurate that that specific undertale song is playing while talking about black metal at 7:36 lol
LMAO, hey, I love the Undertale OST.
Based Uzi pfp btw
I agree with ALOT of these, i have a bias to Rob Zombie and Electric Wizard cause i love their music, but even though you didn't pick them I still agree with your picks 100%. This was a really great videooooo!!!! Had alot of fun watching! you are very knowledgeable :)
The fact that I (someone that listens to metal but has never plunged that deep into subgenres and different bands) could guess what you were gonna pick for (almost) every subgenre, means that your picks were excellent, truly encapsulating how popular those bands are/were
Merry Christmas btw, Alex!
Great video, hoping for more random stuff like this
Yeah, I think Darkthrone would probably be a really good pick for most popular black metal band.
Personally I'd probably say: Darkthrone, Mayhem, Emperor, Satyricon or Dimmu Borgir in terms of names people know if I had to throw a few more names out there. Satyricon has charted in the Nordics several times, reaching number 1 even, and have been around since the early-mid 90s to boot.
burzum too
Any answer other than Korn for Nu metal is a TRAVESTY 😂
LMAO, nu metal was the most difficult shit for me to figure out because of how much I love like a solid 10 or up bands that're massively popular
I disagree, I don't think tons of casuals or non metal fans could name korn over Linkin park
I agree they're considered nu metal gods within metal though
Archspire mentioned (for like one second)🔥🔥🔥
Now do your personal favorites from each genre:D
Rammstein is the biggest industrial metal band of all time. No discussion
Of course. Rammstein is one of the biggest metal bands ever and only growing in popularity while the rest kinda dying out (except MM who's lately been re-surging but makes more goth-rock now).
@@XaremathraasHell yeah, Marilyn Manson 🗣️🔥🔥🔥
i was shocked to not see djent mentioned lol. but if i were to choose i'd prob say meshuggah
Who would contest messugah?
@handleorwhatever animals as leaders maybe?
Excellent video!
And they just sold out a stadium in brazil. I don't think kse could have done that. Never been a big kse fan tho, so i could be wrong
How did you not even mention korn when talking about nu metal limp bizkit is rap metal
A little bit of screams and clean vocals is the type of metal I f with😊
Turns out Marilyn Manson is sober and is now skinny again, just wanted to say that since the thumbnail has an old picture of him
Yeah but the thumbnail image is funnier
That’s not true, he was in very bad health, I think he even threw up on stage once
@@Milo-it1tf I don't see what that has to do with the thumbnail image being funny
@axel90000 he was just in a bad mental and physical state, that’s why I don’t think it’s funny, plus I don’t really laugh at people being overweight
I love Sabaton. They're probably my favorite band right now. I've seen them five times. Sabaton is why my son got into metal because he like history.
There are also many small nu metal bands apart from the well-known ones.
kittie was amazing, Korn was my nu-metal obsession when I was in high school.
Have you listened to American Head Charge? It is a really good Nu Metal band
@@EL-DOFLAMENGO
I'll give em a listen
Some other rare amazing nu metal bands are Twisted Method, Depswa, Snot
Wasn't Fear Factory also considered when it comes to choosing for Industrial Metal?
Do you seriously think Fear Factory can compete with the other 3 chosen in terms of popularity?
Haven't watched yet, let me predict
Traditional: Iron Maiden
Thrash: Metallica (Duh)
Death: Cannibal Corpse
Black: Mayhem
Gothic: Type O Negative
Grindcore: Napalm Death
Symphonic: Nightwish
Power: Helloween
Blackgaze: Deafheaven
Deathcore: Suicide Silence or Whitechapel
Metalcore: Killswitch Engage or As I Lay Dying
Drone: Sunn O)))
Prog: Dream Theater
Alternative: Primus????
Groove:Pantera
Folk: Alestorm
Sludge: Acid Bath
Electronic metal:Bring Me The Horizon
Nu Metal: Linkin Park
Rap Metal: Rage Against the Machine
Glam: Motley Crue
Doom: Black Sabbath
Industrial: Nine Inch Nails
DSBM: Xasthur
baddiecore lol: Bad Omens
Kawaii metal: Babymetal

@Izanamimusic is kawaii metal actually a sub genre?
@@Milo-it1tfnot really. I was joking.
Awesomeness 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
While Deftones are having a ressurgence among Tiktok alternative kids System Of A Down also have more well known songs purely numbers wise
OG heavy metal: Ozzy. The godfathers of the genre of course, and I know enough people who are not metalheads at all and are fans of Black Sabbath or Ozzy's solo material. He's a star beyond all stars with so much well known lore and even an incredible reality show too :)
Gothic metal: Cradle Of Filth.
They have the numbers, they have both the punk cred and the metal cred which is something rare even at a genre which combines punk and metal like Sludge.
yeah sabaton were the ones that originally got me into metal
That's valid! Honestly, I was trying to base this off of widespread appeal to both metal and non-metal fans.

another great contender for Industrial but Rammstein has gotta take it!
I don't know much Black Metal other than Bathory and King Diamond
I love Amon Amarth & Arch Enemy, but Melodeath should go to In Flames. Not only are they one of the original Gothenberg bands that defined that subgenre, they actually do have more monthly listeners on apps like Spotify than either of those other two bands.
Femtanyl mentioned! Love her music
As a Diehard System of a down fan, I agree. I mainly think system is a hard rock band rather than a nu metal or alt. metal band.
Alt metal: normies would pick SOAD or Disturbed bc of oh-ah-ah-ah-ah
Goth: HIM, come on, normies loved that (TON is great too)
Black: Dimmu?..
Soda and disturbed isnt alt metal its nu metal
No Powerwolf mention for Power Metal was unfortunate, for their popularity they seem to be so underrated.
//I agree with Rammstein.
*And I know this is is kind of a trend* rn in your comment section but; I *really* want to pick KoRn for being the most popular nu metal band, J! 🌽
EPICA has been sneaking up on Nightwish in popularity. I love them both. But EPICA is in an ascendency.
Rammstein, while I would describe them as a type of industrial metal, they most definitely do NOT have "all the boxes ticked off"
KoRn is by far the most populair Nu Metal band and it's crazy that you didn't pick them.
Also I don't think BFMV belongs in the "Scene" Metalcore genre but in the classical.
For nu it has to be korn for me if we talk about popularity. If you go by that most popular has to be mayhem for Black metal aswell imo
Who you think the most popular electronicore band is
Electric Callboy's a big contender! I'd say them or I See Stars, but Enter Shikari or Attack Attack are great picks too!
Alright alllriiight
Genuine question: What’s the difference between New Metal and Alternative Metal? SOAD and Deftones sounds like New Metal to me
Nu metal usually have a lot of rap, hip-hop influence, industrial influence as well as some funk at points. Cheers :]
@@TheMetalTempestYT makes sense! TY
@@WallSCCP of course! :D thanks for the comment!
Immediately stopped working on my noise project to watch this, lmao.
Haha, I appreciate it a ton.
I thought that said nose project like you were doing booger sugar or something lol
@@rustyshackleford7656 Wtf, lmao.
W LIST (Linkin Park over slipknot and limp bizkit is kinda wild tho)
I'd add Ministry to the Industrial Metal list. But I'd probably pick Rammstein.
Tf is buddy wearing
This was a fun video. That being said, who was the most “fun” Metal band? I love bands in all these genres but for a smiling good time, STATIC-X. The older the better.
for black metal I'd say it's mayhem bc whenever people talk about the Norwegian black metal scene, they tent to be at the forefront.
this might b a bit biased bc i was introduced 2 black metal from a yt documentary about mayhem
I'm not into black metal and they're the only band I recognized, so I think that's a good pick.
If you take an average normie, they'd rather say burzum bc of the lore or dimmu borgir bc of the costumes and organs
mayhem is a band that exists for its reputation while the music sucks
with metalcore i think more of falling in reverse, for the normy area, how much they took over social media. As far as nu metal goes, I don't know how we have this discussion without KoRn.
Honestly, that's valid in terms of KoRn! I just saw them pretty similar to NiN for industrial metal--very well known, but also offputting to a widespread audience. when it comes to the aesthetic/influence of nu-metal, i tried to look at what defined that generation.
falling in reverse is neither metalcore nor popular enough
So it seems Children of Bodom is underrated? I love being one of the only people who listens to them 🙏
Industrial = Ministry. This is not a discussion.
That'd be a great pick!
I didn't even know Ministry was an industrial metal band until last week.
I'd pick them over all the other ones in the video, but they're really not the first name that comes to mind when you talk about industrial metal (to the average person at least).
Do non-metal music fans even know Ministry...? They seem like a metalhead's choice not a normie's.
Godflesh
Definitely not as big as the other Industrial metal bands mentioned in the video, but you cannot forget about Fear Factory!
great list but my man how can u not include mastodon in sludge metal.
I'm not really into Death Metal, but I have heard of Cannibal Corpse but not Death. Maybe I'll check them out, though.
I see where your coming from saying Metallica is the most popular Thrash band but they did lose the grammy to Jethro Tull sooooooo....
I love killswitch engage ❤❤❤
iconic 💅💅💅
For melodeath is between The Black Dahlia Murder and In Flames
Try opal in sky it a great band
instagram band
@toomanyblocks8448 so they also on UA-cam and good and it okay to have your opinion metal elitest
@toomanyblocks8448Sobeit, they're still better than a lot of other bands
