Let's be honest, Metal isn't the most straightforward world to dive into. What do you mean all War Metal is Blackened Death, but not all Blackened Death is War Metal? In each episode, our host will break down a main genre of metal, providing historical context and hallmark sounds that define the style while providing some great bands to ease yourself into the waters. From there, they'll explore some of the key subgenres to entice you down the rabbit hole that is metal fandom. Banger has built its brand on opening up metal to the world and sharing our passion through enthusiasm and education. So let's get into…
BangerTV wants to create the next great series for our global metal community and we want your help! Introducing the Heavy Metal Democracy Project. Here’s how it works: we’ve created four series pilots which you can watch, vote, and comment on below. Once the votes are in, we’ll greenlight the pilot with the most votes into a full six-part series.

15 years of being a metalhead and I'm just getting into black metal as my taste grows progressively heavier. I've heard a couple songs but never really got into it.
At last this very year I saw Samael live at a festival and realised that the true heart and grandeur of black metal is in the live performances, not the recordings!
I'm planning to go to a local black metal festival to check the genre out more thoroughly.
Checking the lineup introduced me to Insomnium and by extension Wintersun, two bands I'm really enjoying right now!
Not to mention the legendary tale of Varg Vikernes has been a point of fascination for me since my teens!

Cradle of Filth, specifically Nymphetamine. I first heard it through yahoo launch, and at first I was like "ew, these vocals are awful". But the next day I couldn't get the melody out of my head, so I listened to it again. Still hated the vocals. But after time and time, I eventually got learned to be ok with it, then fucking enjoyed the shit out of it. From there I was able to get into Emperor.
They may get a lot of hate, but I love them for getting me into the genre (and really all the metal with harsh harsh vocals)

Immortal got me into black metal in the early/mid 2000's. They were harsh and chaotic enough to speak for the genre, but mainstream enough to find in FYE or Barnes and Noble. Before that, I had no idea to even look for other bands in this genre.

For me it was emperor's anthems to the weilkin at dusk, not as raw as some of their contemporaries, but as a teenager in the late 90's it was a perfect introduction. The best thing about the genre at the time was the sense of mystery about it. It was only what you might of read in a monthly magazine, mixed with myth and roumor.

Venom was scary! When I was 8 years old in the early 80's my big brother showed me that horned goat pentagram and told me about devil worship. There were stories about local people in town killing cows and nailing them to large trees in a forest and then burning them in a ceremony. If you played some songs backwards you could call on the devil. All that jazz =) It as exciting and scary though. I drew A LOT of pentagrams in my school books =) I didn't know any Venom songs though, just the imagery. Now, I want to go back and find out more about the actual music!

I don't usually comment on youtube videos, but I'll make an exception here... I've had an on and off relationship with metal overall, going from loving Maiden and Metallica like most middle schoolers that liked heavier music, to listening to it almost never once I got into punk and hardcore, I ended up dipping my toes into black metal in my sophomore year of college and getting into some bands like Dissection and Watain, but it didn't quite stick, and I eventually reverted back to my music from before, one day I had some yearn to listen to Panopticon's Autumn Eternal when I went on a run through a trail, and I fell in love, now in 2021, I've listened to more metal than ever and the majority of it has been black metal. I fully delved into the subgenres trying to find out all I could about them... I'd have to say my favorites are atmospheric, blackgaze, and DSBM, Panopticon is who truly got me into the genre, and its still my favorite artist in it, other favorites in it include Alcest, Ghost Bath, and Gaoth
(another great thing about getting into the genre with a band like Panopticon was not having to be embarrassed by racism of my favorite band)
I loved the video and love that this series is getting made as I would love to see more people getting into metal, and especially black metal!

My first introduction to black metal was Darkthrone's Transilvanian Hunger. It took me a while to get it and understand what exactly I was hearing and why it sounded the why that it did, but that's what made me curious. I was amazed to discover a completely new sub-culture which I didn't know existed within the metal community with great music and even greater stories.
If I were to recommend anyone today on "how to get into black metal", then "that racist vlogger we don't talk about" is IMO the best gateway- both because of the history and stories revolving his one-man-band project and his great, diversed music style and aesthetic/atmosphere.
