Elissa Farman actually sailed the Sunset Sea on her boat, Sun Chaser, and found 3 islands that she named Aegon, Rhaenys and Visenya. Then on a later voyage, Corlys Valeryon swore that he saw an aged Sun Chaser while in Asshai. So it’s possible that Elissa reached Essos through the Sunset Sea

Well this planet's size should be fairly similar to our own given what appears to be the same pull of gravity and similar geologic composition.
I suppose with that in mind someone could estimate how much of the world remains undiscovered assuming there's some relatively accurate measurements of what is already known.

Most of the physics seem to largely abide by the same rules. Obviously dragons actually flying and other "magic" shows there's more to it than that, but I see no reason to think the more fundamental rules don't apply for the most part, especially as the author's goal was to largely minimize the more fantastic aspects of his world.

You have to think the show is during one of the bloodies war in history, after the Valyrian ones.
If you were living there during a period peace, it wouldn´t be so shitty.
Saying bandits are everywhere is flat out wrong, nothing tells us they are more numerous on average compared to our middle ages criminals.
I don´t understand the point of the Simon Toyne thing, neither the example of Robert´s bastards. Those are different things, I could point out a single example from our world and say criminality is super common and nobody does a thing about it, it would be the same.
G-Rex Saurus Simon Toyne was a bandit leader that was basically able to amass an army right next to the capital of King's Landing. Westeros is sort of like a much more brutal Mexico. You have all of these bandits and mercenary groups running around and the king does nothing about it unless it is an actual threat like Simon Toyne. You say that it depends on if it's a time of peace or not but Westeros is never in a time of peace. In the shadow of massive wars like The War of the Five kings you have small conflicts between petty nobles and pretty soon you'll be taken off your farm to fight in some insignificant battle. Also considering there is a 90% chance you'll be a peasant with no formal fighting education I'd say there is a 65% chance you'll have your stomach impaled by a spear on the battlefield. I haven't even mentioned the countless diseases that plague the populous. Sorry for ruining your day. I just wanted to tell you that Westeros isn't the glorified world you imagine it to be and that you'll most likely die within a couple days.

There was another explorer who attempted to cross the Sunset Sea. Her name was Elissa Farmen, daughter of Lord Farmen Of Faircastle. She was similar to Arya in personality and had a passion for sailing. She built a ship known as Sun Chaser and embarked on an expedition west along with two members of House Hightower. Only one of the Hightowers returned claiming to have discovered three islands far across the sea which had new, strange spices and was inhabited by large grey lizards with a poisonous bite. Komodo Dragons maybe? Anyway, the remaining crew decided to return to Westeros out of fear but Elissa continued west and was never heard from again. A Westerosi man (can’t remember his name) was visiting Asshai and spotted a docked ship he believed was Sun Chaser. Maybe Elissa succeeded in her quest of discovering new lands and riches?
The Westerosi man was Coryls Velaryon, The Sea Snake. And its worth mentioning that Elissa got the money buy her ships by stealing three dragon eggs and selling them in Essos. These are most likely where Ilyrio Mopatis got the three eggs that he gave to Daenerys

or maybe it's so monstrous, and dangerous that no one can come back
anyway we'll never know, with Martin speed, of 1 book every century, I would find out sooner by trying to cross it, while swimming (if it existed)

I was surprised there was no mention of Elissa Farman. She did sail the Sunset Sea on her ship Sun Chaser, along with two Hightower ships, and found three small islands (she named them after Aegon the Conqueror and his sisters) before pursuing forward, never to be seen again. Except..
Some years later, when Corlys Velaryon, the Sea Snake, went to Asshai by the Shadow on one of his nine famous journeys, he swears he saw a ship there that could've been none other that Sun Chaser. This suggests she did manage to sail around the world, but l don't think we'll ever get a definitive confirmation on that. Still, pretty neat.
I like how the relationship of what lies beyond the sunset sea mirrors that of the western sea in tolkiens world. If elves didnt exist in middle-earth to tell men about the valar and Melkor then men of the middle earth would not know why people who ventured west did not return. It's a little like George RR Martins world is the fifth age of middle earth
George RR martin did say he was inspired by Tolkien. Just thought this was an intresting comparison

I love these videos - so informative! You should do a video on all the magical and mythological creatures within the ASOIAF world. Fire dragons, ice dragons, stone dragons, sea dragons, kraken, sphinxes, basillisks, etc.
Gotta say I love these videos. I know the most of the information in them already but it's great to hear it put to words and in such a very fluent and concise way.

I would say the reason the Iron Isles say there is no land beyond is akin to the Vikings and the Basques of Northern Spain; to avoid competition from others. To make sure they found bountiful fishing waters and kept said locations to themselves or encounters with peoples of the Americas a mystery. Remember, the Vikings went as far as Newfoundland in historical records and legends of Templar Knights went to Nova Scotia.
So if there are lands beyond the Sunset Sea, the people of the Iron Isles won't confirm or deny anything.
Yeah but they are part of a united realm now, theres no way you could keep such a secret for long. If there was official discoveries by the Iron Islanders, someone would have definetly found evidence and presented it to some rich lord or the king.

We now know that Alissa Farman sailed west most found three magic Islands and named it Aegon, Rhaenys and Visenya then sailed more west and disaapeared. But Velaryon sailor guy saw her ship at Asshai some 20 years later..

sunset sea is really interesting and i think that the people who sailed there found a world far better than essos and westeros and lived there and maybe they are still people or maybe even kingdoms and empires living there.
i hope that arya in the show would sail there and martin write a story for her and the lands she ventures.

If Westeros is some version of Europe and the British island, Essos and the other continent are the Middle East + Africa and Yi Ti is Asia, then across the sea must be some representation of America. Also, lonely light = Iceland?

When the first men came to Westeros the children flooded the arm of dorne as well as attempting to flood the neck resulting in its marshlike rivery area. I think the iron islands were probably in the mainland before the children flooded the neck, and the iron born were just first men who got to the now iron islands before the flood and were trapped there.
