I was scanning Larson. His movement was totally normal for the situation fighting for the lead. He went to side draft the 22, and then he quickly got away from the 22 so the 22 didn’t pack air straight back on him, and he also went back high to set up his usual high entry into 1. The 5 had no idea the 9 was coming. As he jumped up, his spotter starting yelling OUTSIDE OUTSIDE OUTSIDE after he had already initiated the right turn and it was too late. He definitely didn’t mean to wreck or even block the 9. He was just racing the 22 and thought he had the whole track to use.

The problem I have with the fox brodcast is that they have been displaying the current speed of the cars on the position tracker. There were so many times between today and Daytona where I wanted to know the distance between drivers and all we get is speeds which ultametly tells me nothing
One thing that I found was frustrating when watching the broadcast today was that during the first part of the race, they didn’t show the intervals at all. They only showed the speeds or their manufacture which is useless at Fontana. Eventually they put in the intervals but man that was infuriating to watch. Everything else from fox was solid tho
I'm shocked you haven't covered the Chase Elliot contract extension this past week. Other than that this was a good race, was rooting for Suarez at the end since Chase was taken out of contention.
The best thing in the race booth was a visit by Mark Martin. There were more split screen commercials and if something happen they went back over it. There was lot of junk on the track, Kyle Busch had his roof camera taken out by something.
You should watch the IndyCar race because they did split screen commercials on every commercial If I'm recalling right I didn't pay that much attention but also it was a good race but that's what fox and NBC need to do with NASCAR if they want to keep the fan base in watching
I don't think Larson was moving to block Elliot. I think he was just swinging out to the wall to get his arc or entry into the turn. Yes Chase should be mad and yes it's Kyle's fault. No it was not a block and no it was not intentional.
It was definitely parsons fault his spotter told him Elliot was there and instead of maintaining his line he pulled a way late block he can’t be so good and so stupid in the same breathe. Definitely intentional. Chase should bitch slap that little 8th grader size munchkin.
@@irepairofpc31familykartrac51 you clearly weren’t listening to the radio… Larson’s spotter didn’t say anything until Larson jumped out. Larson was trying to get side draft. That wasn’t on purpose if you think it was, you’re delusional
People dont like Larson so no matter what the fan boys will jump to Elliott no matter what. In the end the better driver will prevail barring no bad luck or mechanical issues throughout the season. He side drafted and jumped towards the wall where he is absolutely known for his performance. I'd be willing to bet if we focus on him earlier in the race it probably wasn't the first time he did it that race.
Eric, I raced this car and track combo on iracing over the past week and I noticed how similar it was to the racing today. The car was very loose at times and hard to control. I am worried for some of the races to come as I have also used the next gen car with them on iracing and they are also hard to handle at times. I think they need to make some changes to make them hard to handle but not unpredictable
You can never predict the cars off a video game. It's very different from real life. You can get a guy that does Iracing all the time and he'll go out there and run 30th. They got the next gen car out before they raced them on track.
The track is bumpy. The way the cars are built makes them more sensitive to these bumps, it seems. iRacing laser-scans every track, so the racing surface you see in iRacing is 100% authentic.
Kenseth was great. The booth was good. The problem i have is the graphics (glitches, mph vs intervals), goofiness, 1 post race interview other than the winner, just not taking Nascar seriously. Watched part of the Indy Car opener today, that coverage blew FOX away. I've been saying this for about 10 years though.
Best race I’ve ever seen in 22 years as a NASCAR fan! WOW!!! That was devastating for Reddick! I actually wanted him to win because of how well he was doing but hey shit happens! I was going wild those last 4 laps thinking Austin would get it and he came OH SO CLOSE + Hemric getting 9th after being 7 laps down made it even better for me as a fan of both! The Xfinity Race last night was just as crazy! Helluva weekend and great video Eric! Here’s mine: ua-cam.com/video/XzysgwzaSvA/v-deo.html
Something Eric didn't mention. Elliott was 2 laps down early in the race after his early spin. He fought his way back through the field after getting his second free pass in the middle of the race. Then he had a GREAT pit stop and got to the front of the pack. Larson cleanly passed chase (with Logano in the middle) and took the lead. Then, after that Larson slammed chase into the wall. You would expect some decency from a Hendrick teammate to not even attempt to throw the block on that play, as even if Larson would have been clear, chase would've had a massive run negated and, in all likelihood, would have opened the door for Logano to take the lead. Even with the failed block, Logano almost took the lead. There was a lot more to the story than mentioned in the video.
I was there and i was cheering and so happy for the larson win! In person I honestly didn’t understand all the outrage after the race, as no one in the stands around me was that mad either. It looked like just a bang bang incident and just a racing deal.
After Larson walled Elliott I was definitely pulling for Suarez, Jones, or Dillon to pull out the win. Good race. Fun to watch…even though I am an Elliott fan.
Right? Like I get it was a mistake, but it still ruined his race. I typically root for Hendrick, but I was right there with you, hoping for one of those 3 to win.
@@ethanmcclain7570 I was honestly pulling for him all race. Just felt he deserved it. He's obviously incredibly talented and will probably get his win sooner rather than later, but it was pretty heartbreaking seeing that happen to him.
@@sneakysnake001 Yea, it was. I think he's one of the most talented drivers in the Cup Series, and this new car seems to make driver skill matter more. He'll win at least once this year.
I think Byron was a contender. He was running top 3 all day until reddick was in the racing line running going like 50mph. Just the wrong place at the wrong time. Nascar probably should’ve thrown the caution earlier.
This was a fantastic race! It proves that we don't need to make Auto Club a short track and we don't need a race shorter than 400 miles. Maybe IndyCar could come back and do a doubleheader with NASCAR if the Cup Series continues to have great racing at Auto Club and if they don't turn it into a short track. I don't blame Larson at all. I didn't like that the collision with Elliott happened but incidents happen in racing, especially with a brand new generation 7 car. Overall, it was a great race and if NASCAR can continously have great races on the 2 mile and above ovals, Auto Club should have 2 dates a year again.
As much as I would love to see IndyCar do a doubleheader with NASCAR at this track in this configuration I don't think it's realistic mainly on the IndyCar side because of just them guys are going 230 miles an hour And it looks more like a super speedway racing NASCAR with just Indy cars The last time they raced there and the attendance the last time they raced there was not really good I think Black flag matters actually has a video on his channel about the last race of IndyCar at Auto club
Kurt Busch's race: he went from 36th to 20th to 34th to 4th to 31st to 23rd to 31st to 19th to 27th to 11th to 28th to 12th to 16th and somehow finished 8th. As a Kurt fan, I couldn't be happier with that result.
I think I've even said that they need to put the inner liners back in these tires To have that security for a blown tire If they need to come up with a a really a quick solution in the short term And a long-term solution
I was there today in my first Cup race. It was really fun, even though my guy Blaney was getting screwed by his pit crew all day. Definitely a great first Cup experience
I definitely agree with the commentary, it seems they are starting to explain more of the cars mechanics and how they work. it makes things way more interesting explaining air pressures and suspension adjustments. Loving that.
I don’t know who planned the design of these cars and said “I have an idea, let’s put low profile tires on these cars and put no inner liners in them”. That’s my only gripe with this car. I don’t know why they though putting low profile tires on the car was a good idea. And this race exposed the problems with it.
I was listening to Larson’s radio and his spotter never called the 9 run. The spotter took responsibility on Twitter. See Tyler Monn on twitter. Larson was side drafting the 22. He is expecting his spotter to call out runs. I am sure 9 fans will attack this. Lol The 9 DID NOT spin on purpose to get back at Larson. These cars are hard to drive. Now, knock the front tire out of alignment and drive 180mph. I am surprised he was able to go that long before spinning. Show that he has a lot of talent. Maybe that will get me back in the 9 fans good graces. 😂 I want someone to run down the Kyle Busch radio today. I am sure it was entertaining.
I still think Larson could have seen him. Elliott was at his door when he decided to go up. But that's racing, at least it is exciting this year! The whole race was entertaining, a little long, but a great race.
@@BW_Outdoors4 as a racer(not at this level) larson almost certainly focused on the 22 to his inside, got the side draft he was looking for and probably saw elliot in his rear view at some point. But didnt know that elliott had the run he had. Elliott coearly had a 8-10mph advantage after 22 & 5 pulled eachother down and elliott got the draft. If larson didnt have a warning call that elliott had a run, then larson certainly would focus on breaking the side draft and moving to his arc entry considering this was the “bending” front stretch. Elliotts run was massive and he didnt want to give it up, i dont blame him. But also he made a daring move, and larson without spotter notice would not have seen it coming considering where chase was on exit and mid straight.
@@dayneamyx5916 I understand what you are saying. I just think it was a racing incident all around. Elliott was clear, at the time, and then Larson made the right to try and hit his preferred line as well. I just feel once a car is that close, you should know it is there. But I know that is easier said than done at 180+ mph.
Elliott had an amazing comeback after the early spin and then in return he got his car jacked going for the lead. By a teammate, nonetheless. Try to remember Chase was 2 laps down toward the beginning of the race.
It’s 11:26 PM PST and I just got home from Fontana! What a race! It was the best race I’ve attended since I started going in 08. Didn’t hear any boos from my section (7) when Larson blocked Elliott. Then again, Larson is the home state favorite! Please don’t change the two mile layout! 🙏🏼
I feel of all the cookie cutters that Auto Club was always a standout. Especially with the bumpiness of the asphalt and the 4 and 5 wide craziness into each corner. It’s fun to watch.
I know you briefly touched on it, but it's really impressive that no one besides Elliot (post damage) and Josh Bilicki in the #77 I think got lapped under green flag racing. That's a huge testament to the parody of these cars now and is really awesome to see. I hate it every time I look at the standings and half the field is 1 or more laps down and almost everyone that didn't go laps down from a wreck, spin or technical issue was on the lead lap throughout this entire race.
I think we have a good contender for a championship race track. Its seemed to really favor good drivers, good strategy, and good pit stops everything that should be required to win the championship
Newer race cars (and probably the last few NASCARs) have suspension that won’t extend to its max ride height. It helps keep the car planted but that’s causing problems now. If they could release their suspension down then latch it back in the pits (like the diffuser flap) it might fix the problem, but I don’t see that happening soon. Maybe they could have a second air spring or jack that could raise the rear up like how GT cars jack themselves, but this would be mounted to the suspension.
Matt Kenseth was very good in the booth. Hope he does it again. Bowyer and Matt made a good solid team. Would love to have Mark Martin try his hand in the booth. Good race overall.
The fact that Aric Almirola finished 6th after spinning out with about 40 laps left and Kyle Busch finished 14th after being multiple laps down for about 85 percent of the race is incredible. I’ve never seen a race before with that many comers and goers.
So much parody a lot of drama and pretty solid racing I think nascar nailed another banger I also think Auto Club should forget about that short track project and keep the old configuration
Amazing race! The Gen7 car is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do! Every single race is gonna fun to watch for the first time in over a decade! And I agree Eric that both races on the two mile tracks should be 360 miles/180 laps. Along with most other races other than the Crown Jewels being reduced slightly.
I was at the race today, where I was, I and many others couldn't see that Larson slammed Elliott and I guess that's why no one booed, also HMS in general is the most popular team so that's another thing.
This race was amazing! One thing I have to mention is the commentating. Nascar needs a play by play guy in the booth. I watched Indycar before this race and Leigh Diffey was commentating every move that anyone made as it was happening. The commentators were so enthusiastic and it made the race that much more enjoyable to watch. NASCAR on the other hand it felt almost like the commentators were having a podcast after the race. The things they said were interesting but when action was happening on track they would talk about "oh that guy has had a good day so far" and it's almost like they aren't very interested in the race as it's happening. It feels too laid back and not very engaging as a viewer. NASCAR needs it's own Leigh Diffey.
Hey Eric correct me if I'm wrong but the fix nascar is currently looking at for flat tires is with different ways to tow the vehicle back. Doesn't that seem to not be the point? The car bottoms out and gets stuck. Don't you think a more appropriate fix is to make the car not act like a turtle on it's shell with flat tires....a height rule maybe? Changing the wheels to 16 inch to allow more tire on the car so it's higher in the air? A design change on the bottom of the car so it doesn't get stuck? All these seem better than trying different things with towing it back....every other type of racing if u get a flat and no damage you can "limp" the car back. Don't u feel that even if u get a cut tire from debris spin out hit nothing u are not able to continue.....I'm really wanting to like the new car but let's not get so far from reality cus it is a new car that we forget the roots....you have been able to limp the car back in nascar since I dunno the beginning of time. It is really annoying to see that you can't do that...then I hear they wanna fix it by trying something different with towing the car????? THATS NOT THE ANSWER!!!! I'm actually annoyed they haven't raised the car as a quick fix for now till they can figure it out cus making changes for towing a car should only be if the car is not physically able to continue. It's annoying, I didn't know this was the nascar towing series! Share your thoughts please
Kenseth deserves to be back in the booth. Hope to see Mark Martin call a race too. Larson didn't have the fastest car but when it counted at the end, he drove like a BOSS !
Also another thing people aren’t mentioning was the leader barely faced lap traffic. I know they only ran about 30 laps per run before a caution came out but it seems like everyone in the entire field were closer which is refreshing to see
I 100% believe that Chase intentionally spun his car in spite of Larson. And I'm a fan of Chase. I was pissed when Larson doored him. I'm sad that 75% of Hendrick imploded. They all looked so good today, especially Byron. I was also rooting for Reddick and Jones, at least one of them got a good finish. Reddick's day will come, and maybe Jones, too. I wasn't expecting Petty GMS to be this fast.
My crypto mentor Mr Richard Emerson, you may have come across him on a few interviews I invested $3000 last two weeks and it profited me $11,410 a higher success.
Larson and Daniels are starting to look like prime Jimmie/Knaus. On days that they did not have the best car they work on it and by the end of the day they are leading and winning. Agreed that Daniel made a mistake going to the bottom given that Larson will want to ride the top and get a run but his lack of experience going for cup wins was a factor. Still very impressed he was able to wrestle the lead away from Larson, albeit for a short time, a fantastic effort and would like to see him get a win this year, he deserves it. Reddick was fantastic and he will most likely win two races this year, deservedly so. Erick Jones was really good as well and could have won. It was a fantastic race overall, one of the best in years, start to finish. I really like the drivers have to wheel these cars, although that gives Larson even more of an advantage lol.
I disagree calling Larson's move "dirty". It was a racing incident. They went for the same real estate at the same time and it didn't work out well for Elliott. Had it been a Harvick deal this looks entirely different. Good teammates would not do that to one another intentionally. Nobody expected a big run into the corner most had come off of the corner. It sucks, I get Elliott being mad but it was a racing deal. I don't believe it was Larson's fault Elliott spun in qualifying, hit the wall earlier in the race and spin out after that. Elliott has no blame in this?! Larson owned up to it on his half, have not heard that from Elliott. It seems it is never Elliott's fault no matter the situation, that is noticeable.
I was at the race and to answer your question about the content between Chase and Kyle I was in turn 4 and I didn’t see and I don’t think not many saw it either. Everyone was confused on why chase was off pace. And people didn’t even boo him either.
The wheels are a legit issue and it's crazy how much the industry is downplaying it. Plus, if it takes longer to gas the car than it does to change 4 tires, the whole pit strategy aspect of this sport is now gone.
The official results show "Time of Race: 3hrs, 3 min, 7 sec". Longer than usual for Fontana, but less time than most Cup races. I'm a big fan of both Elliott and Larson. I definitely felt a full range of emotions today. Overall, a great race. Can't wait for Las Vegas.
I honestly think Larson was so focused on Logano and was moving up the track to get a good line into the corner and had no idea that Chase had that run
This race was long because 670hp and low downforce (which is not a bad thing) makes lap times very slow. Top speed was only about 193mph on the frontstretch.
Pleasantly surprised Kenseth did as good or better than Smoke. Was just reminded of what he did to Logano and it still warms my heart. It was totally well deserved Eric and you should appreciate that move more than you do.
Being a larson fan I’m happy with how yesterday went , but I was also routing for Jones and Suarez .. both had fantastic races I’d rate this race 75/100.. the amount of flat tires drove the rating down .
Gotta say this is the absolute best intermediate track racing I’ve ever seen. Beautiful racing and a super solid debut. Also I thought we witnessed Larson making himself public enemy #1, but I guess not. I personally found it kind of hard to root for Larson in the final laps even as a Larson fan.
Overall, this Auto Club race is pretty great! Lots of drivers had great runs such as Erik Jones, Tyler Reddick, William Byron, and a few others although it sucks that they couldn’t make it to the finish line. Lots of drivers in the Top 5 were so close to winning this race, but Kyle Larson steals the show once again and wins Auto Club. At least I got one of my picks right. Tyler Reddick is also one of my picks although it sucks that he got taken out along with William Byron. But other than that, it’s a pretty great race!

You should watch the IndyCar race because they did split screen commercials on every commercial

I didn't pay that much attention but also it was a good race but that's what fox and NBC need to do with NASCAR if they want to keep the fan base in watching

The Kenseth/Logano chat was so epic
I don't think Larson was moving to block Elliot. I think he was just swinging out to the wall to get his arc or entry into the turn.
Yes Chase should be mad and yes it's Kyle's fault. No it was not a block and no it was not intentional.
I am inclined to agree. It’s just how many tough breaks is Chase going to have. Anytime it seems he’s up front SOMETHING happens. Almost everytime.
I can definitely agree. I was in the stands and you can see larson do it alot going into the turn. Made up a lot of ground and passes doing that
It was definitely parsons fault his spotter told him Elliot was there and instead of maintaining his line he pulled a way late block he can’t be so good and so stupid in the same breathe. Definitely intentional. Chase should bitch slap that little 8th grader size munchkin.

@@tomasmowery164 To be fair, IRacing is where William Byron comes from. There's a bit of merit to it lol

I agree this was the best auto club race I’ve ever seen
No boo's. Lots of us Larson fans in Cali. Just an accidental mistake by Larsons spotter Tyler Monn and Larson.
I was there, he was booed for not doing a burnout at the end.
Tyler didn't say a word about the run by Chase, just close side drafting with JL.
As much as I would love to see IndyCar do a doubleheader with NASCAR at this track in this configuration
I don't think it's realistic mainly on the IndyCar side because of just them guys are going 230 miles an hour
And it looks more like a super speedway racing NASCAR with just Indy cars
The last time they raced there and the attendance the last time they raced there was not really good
I think Black flag matters actually has a video on his channel about the last race of IndyCar at Auto club
Kurt Busch's race: he went from 36th to 20th to 34th to 4th to 31st to 23rd to 31st to 19th to 27th to 11th to 28th to 12th to 16th and somehow finished 8th. As a Kurt fan, I couldn't be happier with that result.
That's reallly up and down.
My only major complaint with the next-gen car is that when you get a flat tire you get stuck and go 3 laps down.
I think I've even said that they need to put the inner liners back in these tires
To have that security for a blown tire
If they need to come up with a a really a quick solution in the short term
And a long-term solution
I was there today in my first Cup race. It was really fun, even though my guy Blaney was getting screwed by his pit crew all day. Definitely a great first Cup experience
I definitely agree with the commentary, it seems they are starting to explain more of the cars mechanics and how they work. it makes things way more interesting explaining air pressures and suspension adjustments. Loving that.
I’m so damn glad I was able to go to this race in person. Absolutely an amazing experience
Lol
The 9 DID NOT spin on purpose to get back at Larson. These cars are hard to drive. Now, knock the front tire out of alignment and drive 180mph. I am surprised he was able to go that long before spinning. Show that he has a lot of talent. Maybe that will get me back in the 9 fans good graces. 😂
I want someone to run down the Kyle Busch radio today.
If they touch auto club I’ll lose it, what a race
Daniel Hemric finished in the top ten at one point was six laps down
So much parody a lot of drama and pretty solid racing I think nascar nailed another banger I also think Auto Club should forget about that short track project and keep the old configuration
This next gen car put on a good show this race a lot more racing and passing truly a great race.
Leigh Diffey is an awesome announcer, he is great at generating excitement
@@bradstanley116 He really is great. Not just with Indycar but with the Olympics too.
Shoutouts to Dillon Jones and Suarez for top 5s Hemric and Stenhouse for top tens Gilliland on a top 20 and Smithley and McLeod for top 25s
Kenseth deserves to be back in the booth. Hope to see Mark Martin call a race too. Larson didn't have the fastest car but when it counted at the end, he drove like a BOSS !
I still don’t want to think about the fact that Danica is in the booth next week.
She said she didn't really like racing. Why would they bring her back? Get people who care.
She was terrible last year in the SRX Series Booth.
She literally had zero success in NASCAR. Couldn't avoid a wreck much less race anyone. What insight could she possibly have?
Also another thing people aren’t mentioning was the leader barely faced lap traffic. I know they only ran about 30 laps per run before a caution came out but it seems like everyone in the entire field were closer which is refreshing to see
Didn't Austin Cindric do the exact same thing to his teammate?
I 100% believe that Chase intentionally spun his car in spite of Larson. And I'm a fan of Chase. I was pissed when Larson doored him. I'm sad that 75% of Hendrick imploded. They all looked so good today, especially Byron. I was also rooting for Reddick and Jones, at least one of them got a good finish. Reddick's day will come, and maybe Jones, too. I wasn't expecting Petty GMS to be this fast.

I enjoyed this race a whole lot. I loved seeing the drivers have to fight their race cars all day long. Excited to see what Vegas has In store.
Autoclub should stay 2 miles long change my mind. This race was super hype, I missed Autoclub so much
Larson and Daniels are starting to look like prime Jimmie/Knaus. I really like the drivers have to wheel these cars, although that gives Larson even more of an advantage lol.
listening to chases audio at the time, yeah i wont say wat was said but it was not clean😳, also Kenseth did a awesome job in commentary

I hope they don’t turn this into a short track. This race was so awesome. It would be a crime if they changed it.
Eventually the pavement will break down for good and they'll have to do **something**
Very excited for the season
I was at the race and to answer your question about the content between Chase and Kyle I was in turn 4 and I didn’t see and I don’t think not many saw it either. Everyone was confused on why chase was off pace. And people didn’t even boo him either.
I was there in person at section 7, they booed him for not doing a burnout. wasn’t for forcing Chase into the wall

I'm tired of flat low-profile tires immobilizing the cars - that is just a stupid design
That is not correct.
Kyle loves running the rim, don't you think that he might have been moving up there instead of blocking him?
I honestly think Larson was so focused on Logano and was moving up the track to get a good line into the corner and had no idea that Chase had that run
3/3 for the season. Missed Stage 1, but the rest did *not* disappoint
Glad to see some one talking about Erik Jones. He was running up front at Daytona as well until a he got caught up in that final wreck.
Going to need a lot of Alka Seltzer after this Race for Teams
The whole race…
McQueens blowing a tire!!!!
Hell of a race. Loved seeing Erik Jones run upfront all day. Xfinity race was awesome also so expected this one to shine. Loved it!
Best auto club race since 2013
This race was long because 670hp and low downforce (which is not a bad thing) makes lap times very slow.
Nope. His spotter was silent, and he "didn't see him coming".
I’m so pumped. But Chase should know it was just a mistake. I kind of feel bad for him. But I’m so happy for Larson.
I honestly believe Bluejimmie48fan is pumped as well.
Great race! Looking forward to the rest of the season with this new car. Think NASCAR will grab new fans with this car and the type of racing it brings.
Quite a few cautions more than I would’ve liked overall though the race was OK way better than Daytona
Kenseth in the booth was amazing. Such dry humour and great, calm insights. Mark Martin was the cherry on top of all.
I have always loved Auto Club and its racing style. I hope, it stays like this
