    For first time riders, the motorcycle clutch is probably one of the most confusing and asked about parts of how to ride a motorcycle. In today's video we are going to explain to you guys what the clutch is, how to use it and how it pairs with other controls like the front brake and throttle. Using all these together we will get the motorcycle going and riding it around a parking lot. We will also go over the way to shift up and down through the gears as well as come to a stop from higher gears! There's a lot to learn in this episode.

      3 days?! I really gotta practice longer. I got my bike delivered Wednesday but it’s been really cold so I haven’t been riding.
      I realized if I pick my feet up quickly it’s tell my brain to tell my easy to work together faster to keep the bike up. Clutching still doesn’t feel natural and I can’t take off quick enough to be on public roads. BUT I’m not stalling a lot. Riding is a lot harder than everyone said it is 😂 so much to think about

    4:30 good simple safety measure; pull the clutch lever whenever scary.
    It also helps when we stall the engine. If the engine stops, it will abruptly stop the rear wheel, unless you pull the clutch.

  • @Baleur
    @Baleur 2 роки тому +81

    Just a note, the reason that front brakes are ALWAYS stronger in ALL vehicles, even if the front and rear brake discs are identical of size and type, is because as you decelerate, weight shifts towards the front (Thats why a car tips forward as you slow down).
    Thus the vast majority of the weight of the entire vehicle is put on the front tire, adding friction, friction slows you down.
    Its not because the front brake disc is larger, its because of physics.
    Now, on motorcycles they ALSO make the front brake disc larger, for this exact reason, because its by far the most effective location to put all your braking force in. My point is just to correct what he said.
    Front brake is best because of physics, not BECAUSE the brake disc is larger.
    But the brake disc is made larger, BECAUSE front braking is best due to physics.
    Even if you had the largest brake disc in the world on your rear tire, and only used your rear brake, that rear tire would have almost no friction, since all the weight would be on the front. Imagine the difference of braking on tarmac versus ice.
    Or imagine the rear tire slightly lifting off from the ground as you brake, even if you brake WITH the rear tire.
    Your rear tire is ice compared to your front, during deceleration.
    During acceleration, its the opposite, which is why braking INTO turns is so important, it makes sure your front tire wont skid.

    • @Rhyme905
      @Rhyme905 2 роки тому

      braking into turns??? rear brake or front? ppl always have diff advice i was told always accelerate through turns never brake or u will fall

    • @stevenmaschek7554
      @stevenmaschek7554 Рік тому +3

      Just to clarify your obscure statements. (Friction is generated by the grip level available). So the misleading statement that friction is generated by extra weight on the front is not true as if you put an extra 200 pounds of weight on the front forks, that would not necessarily cause the bike to slow down without applying brakes, except for the fact that the bike would be unrideable.
      In Braking the grip/friction only occurs when the brakes are applied, and the laws of physics will try and keep the same velocity/momentum and the brakes are creating an opposite force to slow the tire rotation. the next part of the physics is the weight transfer to the front, which will give extra down force on the road therefore extra grip, therefore can effectively use more brake force before locking up. The back tire with less down force will have a much reduced grip level therefore less effective braking capacity.
      If you did not have a larger brake at the front you would be unable to have sufficient brake force to be effective, that is why the size and quality of the front brake does significantly effect the ability to brake strongly
      This is why all Motor bikes and all cars have much bigger braking on the front then on the back, not only because it saves money on the brakes cost but it would actually be dangerous to have the same sized brakes front and rear. Even with ABS to stop the lockups this just reduces the Braking effectiveness so lockups don't occur.
      As for Braking into corners the reason is that it largely helps to stabilise the Bike, stops the front from being pushed through the corner and allows the rider to setup for the corner and accelerate out again for stability, which also answers the next persons question. This also works same with cars, although is a little more complicated in front and all wheel drive models.
      Please if you are going to try and explain Physics do it properly!

    • @stevenmaschek7554
      @stevenmaschek7554 Рік тому +3

      @@Rhyme905 you should not brake thru the corner as this can cause issues with grip and stability, as you are creating 2 different kinds of competing forces (Turning and braking), can cause loss of traction

    Thank you for all the videos! I haven't been on a bike in 25 years. I recently bought my R7 (the same bike you are on in this video) and immediately hit the streets. I thought I remembered everything from my previous riding. What an idiot move that was. I dumped and stalled the bike the same day I bought it. The second day I wrecked it and now I have $1000 in repairs.
    I have watched all your videos now. I feel better about riding now. Once I get my bike back from the shop, parking lot here I come! From your videos, I have learned what I was doing wrong and how to correct them.

    2 things I would add for beginners when stopping
    1. Always make sure your handlebars are straight when you stop to prevent the bike dropping
    2. Brake with both front and rear until the last 2-3 feet and finish the stop with just the rear brake.

People always told me to disengage it slowly but to do it as fast as possible which makes no sense whatsoever. I now understand that this action should not be that fast if you are a begginer. I just finished mine, an intense two days of Zoom classroom instruction on Motorcycle safety (7 hours), than riding experience in a parking lot (7 hours), so two full days of instruction. Now I feel I can start riding my personal motorcycle with no fear, and allot more confidence. The class was expensive, 350 in Los Angles area, but well worth every penny. What a fantastic tutorial series 👏 this is, 5 stars & hat tip to you sir for putting this together! I've already been through this stuff in my learning process, but man I wish I had seen this before the first time on a bike - incredibly valuable information for any new rider! It was a bit easier for me to learn to ride a bike due to already having clutch work from riding 4 wheelers & manual transmission cars & trucks - yet I still picked up some valuable tips from this series, especially episode 5.
    Admittedly traffic & intersections intimidated the shit out of me & I avoided them if I could, until I felt confident enough to be there. Some advice - don't be a jackhole & try stuff you're not ready for, this is not a video game, there is no "reset" button when you eff up... Get home to your family - don't commit accidental suicide or land in hospital bed because you were to cool to be bothered with the basics. Great job Chase, subbed your channel just because of this series.👊👍

    I'll be honest this has been good for me because I was never a motorcycle guy I was always more of a car guy personally. If I ever did look at bikes it was mostly cruisers like harleys & stuff. I was always unsure of the sports bikes like this because of the clips of these bikes going so fast when steering to where the knees are barely an inch from touching the ground. That for as simple as it may sound deterred me away from these for most of my life. So this has been good for me because even though I've thought about learning about motorcycles I was never sure of myself if whether or not I'd be able to handle this kind of thing.

It was so hard so me to master as I kept revving up the throttle unintentionally either when turning the steering, maneuvering the bike or even braking. I was always pressing the throttle too hard. So many others have the same issue. I am surprised how you did not go over it in details on how to handle the throttle. But everything else was on par. Thank you.

Ive been putting it in neutral and letting it roll to the stop in neutral. So like if I'm going like 60 MPH in 4th gear I don't down the shift to 3rd and 2nd, then first;
    I just put it into neutral from 4th and let it roll all the way to the stop sign staying in neutral to a complete stop.
    Then i put it back into first gear before accelerating again to leave the stop sign.
    I've always thought that I don't have to hold the clutch the whole time in first gear at a stop, but prefer rolling to a stop in Neutral cuz I've always felt that downshifting wears out the clutch prematurely. I've always thought downshifting and using the clutch in that way was mainly when you're racing so that your maximizing speed but I could be wrong.
    Would I be okay to just go from 4th gear into neutral and let it roll to the stop rather than downshift and hold the clutch at the stop in first gear ?
    Thanks.
    Anybody knowledgeable please reply soon.

      No, you should practice downshifting so you always have power to the wheels and you are ready to move incase of an emergency. You shouldnt be coasting in neutral in a manual car let alone a motorcycle.

      @@namehere8865 ok nice. Yea I also wondered about the power to the wheels thing for the motorcycle so thank you for confirming it.
      I'll start downshifting now solely for the power to the wheels emergency quick reaction time important thing plus maybe engine braking.
      Thanks.

    I believe it's actually called "Revolutions Per Minute" as opposed to "Rotations Per Minute," but I'm nitpicking here. 🤣 Awesome videos . . . my 10-year old son (who won't stop bugging me about a dirt bike) is watching them with me.

    Chase ive just watched some of episode 2 and 3 and was very stunned that the instructions given in the video took 2 x 20 minutes video to explain and how that could make for content. Then i thought of something.
    Is it a general thing that you dont have lessons at a drive/riding school to get your licens? In that case I completely get it, you are basically the youtube version of driver licens schools in europe. Where you have theoretical lessons and multiple choice tests you have to pass - for 4-6 weeks - also in those 6 weeks 3-4 times a week an hour of riding with your schools instructor in a car behind 3-5 licens takers.
    There is a "MC Kindergarten" before we are allowed on the streets - where you learn emergency braking, clutchwork, slallom tracks, wet surface braking and countersteering, riding with a passager working against you and where you want to put the weight.
    In the end there is a THEORY exam, and a practical exam. Both needs to be passed with minimum threshhold of error to pass. Then and ONLY then you are legally allowed to drive a car or ride a motorcycle on the road.

      There is a class you can pay to take in the U.S., but it's optional and most people don't bother. All you have to do is pass a pathetically easy multiple choice test, and do a almost as easy five minute parking lot skills test. Once that's done, you can immediately go out and ride any bike you want no questions asked. I was riding for almost a year before I even bothered going to get my motorcycle license, it's not required to buy a bike.

      @@Damiv yeah i knew about that to some extent. So the only test is parking :D which is where all fatal accidents happen. I mean :D ... Well. It Costs on average 1550 USD to get the by law required subjects covered. If you fail your tests you have to pay to get a new exam.
      So we should have better educated drivers and riders than you do :D

    I've driven manual for years. My scooter is basically automatic. I'm taking motorcycle lessons next week and my biggest question mark is shifting on a motorcycle. I would have liked to see more video of the foot work as that's what I'm most concerned with. I also wanted to know why you had to move the bike to shift all the way down while stopped. On a car I'd usually just stop it in gear then throw into neutral while waiting at the light. I noticed you didn't have to rev match while shifting down? Some of the stuff here just seemed counterintuitive to me to maintain the clutch.

    How transferable are driving stick compared to shifting on a bike? Im looking into maybe POSSIBLY PERHAPSSSSSS start riding. Just from your explanation it seems pretty transferable especially if you have extensive experience already driving manual

    These video's are awesome! I was wondering though, if you have to slowly release the clutch and add throttle at the same time, once the clutch is released do you have to keep adding throttle? or if I let go of the throttle what would happen?

      i don’t drive a motorcycle yet but i’m guessing it’s similar to a car- if you want to go faster you’d pull the throttle more but if you want to go the same speed you’d probably keep the throttle in the same position . again i don’t have my own motorcycle yet so don’t take my word 100% but i would be surprised if it was too different from that-
