I agree completely! From my experience it’s been instinctual. Not saying it’s not something that can be explained or pointers can’t be given but even when I began driving it was just something I just noticed. I’ve just become overly aware to my surroundings since I started riding.

I don't think a whole video should be dedicated to it. Just gotta look at the tires and be mindful of traffic. If your lane is clear and you have a car next to you, you should expect they're gonna wanna change lanes.

As someone who just started taking motorcycle lessons I am a bit scared to ride in traffic even though I've been driving cars for 10 years. The biggest fear I think we have as riders are cars. So watching someone ride and explain things as they go really helps with anxiety. Thank you!

6:10 I *highly* recommend staying in gear and using the clutch and front brake (for stopping, hold rear brake when stopped) as he said after this. If something happens and you need to get out of the way immediately, it could be the literal difference between life and death.

The instructor while taking riding lessons in traffic for my motorcycle license said ''at a red light always put the bike in neutral'', I said to myself wth is he talking about , so the only time I did that was to obtain my license , also always keep looking behind you especially at a light right after a corner or if you have to stop for an obstacle, a light for road workers etc , always in gear ready to go and have eyes everywhere especially behind you I'd say , (sorry for my half English )

the distance between you and the car in front of you at a traffic light is very important. If someone hits you from behind and you are too close to the car in front of you, you can end up between two cars and be seriously injured. So please keep extra distance at traffic lights

One tip i heard that i liked was always stopping at the far left or far right side of your lane rather than directly in the center. Even if you're at a stoplight, no cars in front of you it still gives you room to potentially move if you see it in time, but it also means you will go more to the side and not just straight out into an intersection or someth

Some girl in my town when she was on the freeway car in front hit their brakes and was told she broke perfectly but was in the middle of the lane and the car behind her didn't see it till it was too late, put her in-between the two cars and she passed away on impact. Should also decide what part of the lane you want to be on as well

If you want to push or stretch that comfort zone out more, go do track days. Your life span as a rider depends on this philosophy.

For the first tip regarding blinking your brake light, you can purchase a 'Brake Light Modulator' that will flash automatically when you apply the brakes. I just added this to my bike about a month ago and it's great. Best $10 i've spent on it so far. Highly recommend. They come in all kinds of options (fast blink, slow blink, blink 3 times fast, then slow, etc etc.) Mine flashes everytime I apply the brakes, it will flash 3x fast, 3x slow, then solid.
Quite easy to install as well, coming from someone with little to no electrical experience. All you need to do is find your brake light wire and your ground wire, cut them, and tap the device into the lines.

To understand counter steering that helped me: when you lean, your front tire is also gonna turn that way, so the reason you have to PUSH because you’re pushing your tire to be straight, and the lean and slight turn is turning your bike. Hope that makes sense! 😁

Hey man I absolutely love your videos, well done.. just a couple of points I would add, wearing high visibility gear always helps with being seen.. non biker car drivers usually drive with no thought of what bikers have to go through on each journey, so we do what we can to protect ourselves at all times.
The follow distancing that I was taught works out to 'the 2 second rule'.. I simply repeated in my head "only a fool breaks the 2 second rule". Repeating that mantra when I first started to ride really helped me to gauge and monitor my distance. I basically use a reference point such as a lamppost or a highway sign, tree etc. and count 2 seconds when the vehicle in front has passed to when you pass.. simple really.

Pedestrians that cross when ever they want are a pet peeve. I found a great solution, I bought boat hand held fog horn ,so when they just walk out and MAKE you stop, I remind them that they don’t have a green or go light to which I normally get the finger, I then hit my fog horn just as they get last me. Do NOT do this if they’re still in front of you because they may come at you, but if they’re already past you can hit the horn and take off while laughing.

Chase, you can choose to be more purposeful with a lot of that advice.
The lane position is important. So at 14:19, choose to hug the right tyre track. Etc.
And 13:40 I’d really emphasise that point that you want a gap alongside you always. Never ride beside something - pass it as you were doing - but if your way is blocked, hang back. You’re riding close = trust. (lol edit: you got there at 16min)
Taking the lane stance further (and flipping it over from a UK stance), I’d agree you don’t want dead centre, but there’s nothing wrong sitting just left of that dead centre. This way, you should be more visible to cars emerging from side roads on the right (the least visibility); and you can drift out to the white line if you want to ensure a car is getting to see you. Then, beyond these styles, the extra tip is to assume they’ve still not seen you - exit plan (as you say later) is very important. Also on the highway, if you kept right towards the solid line (or extreme right) some stupid cars will try and pass you within lane, hence just off centre in the tyre track seen as better.
Rural roads are very different. We are thought to maximise view. Imagine taking the racing line, but keep to the outside of a bend until you can see up the straight and then apex very late.
You probably don’t get it in the states, but if you can get an electronic copy, there’s a book here called Road Craft (I think) giving all these tips. Seems robotic at first but you soon learn to make it flow and flex.
What you’re doing with these videos is really well intentioned and could be very handy for those that have never thought about it or are new.

But I only died out 1 time leaving the dealership stall but made it home. When the road was clear it was amazing and fell in love with my R1 ❤

I just took the MSF course last weekend. Even when I was staring to feel really confident going around cones and such, I looked up at one point on a straight away and the trees and landscape absolutely disoriented me. I spent so much time focused on the black pavement and the lines on the parking lot, but realize I have so much to learn as it translates over to real life riding.

I wanted a 600cc bike but after taking the course to get my license i went with the 400cc because there is enough power there for anything youd want to do (wheelies, burnouts). The 400cc is still a bit more powerful then i am comfortable with at times but everyone has a different comfort zone. Id take a motorcycle saftey course bc insurance is cheaper and you dont have to do to the dmv to get your tests done as most of them are partnered with them. Good luck out there!

It might seem overwhelming at first for newer riders but it will become second nature (and a sport!) to predict manouvres before they seem to happen. There are so many signals drivers are giving off without them knowing it's really useful to start to look at traffic this way.

You position yourself well, but if a car comes up behind you who is not paying attention, you have no ability to escape. I am about to take a long trip that will take me onto interstate, big cities, and a variety of roads. (I've been riding for years, but I counter that statement by saying complacency and confidence can hurt me; so learning is great). Everything you say is true and on my mind, especially, "They will forget about you." I try to move a lot, signal with indicators and my arms. I DO address blind spots, try to make eye contact with motorists waiting in intersections (on rural roads; not so much in city as too much is going on in the intersections) and I activly control MY placement. I watch the wheels and check the changes between the tires of the car and the lines on the road (if the space shrinks, expect them to try and change lanes. Also I follow some personal rules: 1) "If there is a *percieved* space next to a car (in traffic) they will try to take it. 2) The person in the car is ALWAYS on their cell phones (even when they arent) 3) Never trust a truck.

@@genevievecosgrove427 100% I agree. When I ride, I always signal indicate and use hand signals. I feel like the blinking light is not enough - in my area (and areas I am unfamiliar) so I hope the added motion catches the attention of the driver behind me. You know we see more than car drivers -some of the things I have seen drivers do (look ma’ no hands) while they motor around us, is insane. That aside I agree that the deep emotional and psychological feeling I get while riding comes with added rewards and responsibility. Be well and keep 2 down Genevieve!
