    Finally someone gets REALLY close to the Slash NR tone. Had to watch a lot of videos of "hot to get that tone" where the player demos were honestly not that close.
    I really appreciate the emphasis on finger tone and vibrato. The key with Slash is that he knows WHEN to use that vibrato and when to use almost none or a very slow variable bend.

      I feel the same way. My tones are solid recreations. Lots of fancy videos out there from bigger channels that fail to get something similar. I get that my videos aren’t the best edited and presented videos however, if people actually understand the underlying message, it’s solid advise and information.

    Awesome video man well done! For some who are complaining it doesn't sound like the studio version will I have news for you slash himself can't sound like the studio version without the studio. His live performances proved that. Especially His live performance of Sweet child of mine sounds nothing like the record.

      Appreciate your comment. Yeah the truth is slash sounds good live but rarely ever sounds like the record because it’s really hard to truly replicate the sound of any record. The important thing is to try your best with whatever gear you have. I hear all the time that you have to get this or that to sound like somebody but these people always fail to objectively show that their tone is very similar to the actual albums tone.

    I believe the guitar slash used for the original November rain recording was the original 59 that once belonged to Joe Perry of Aerosmith. He used it on 2 songs not sure of the other and that same guitar was also the one used in the November rain music video, years later he gifted it back to Perry for his 50th birthday.

    I think the key to Slash's lead tone is the distortion pedal. When I replaced my usual overdrive pedal with the distortion, it started instantly sound like Slash. I don't know what kind of distortion it exactly is, as I experimented with Waves FTR, and it doesn't tell the original product name. All I know it's yellow. BTW it surprised me how close I got to the original tone with an S-series Ibanez (Mahagony body with Seymour Duncan Alnico II at neck position), so you don't need a Les Paul for 2500 bucks. ;-)
    I haven't tried to setup a rhythm patch, yet.

    • @ShredHeads
      @ShredHeads  2 роки тому +1

      The biggest tonal differences in a guitar will come from the pick ups. So that’s probably why that Ibanez can sound good for a slash tone. There will always be a lot of experimenting when it comes to tone. I say use what works for you.

  • @TSTBand

    I think there's another thought to this dilema, maybe Slash doesn't want to sound like the album version either, reason why he sounds in a particular way in the 90's and totally different now. I think he nailed that album tone for that purpose of recording that particular album and then he just move on and doesn't take the sleep out of him at night.
    Now talking about the tone, i think the album version is pretty much impossible to get 100% right even for Slash himself if he wanted to... However the live sound it's possible and some people have done it very similar, i would focus more in going that path instead of trying to get the album tone if that's something anyone want to achieve as a Slash kinda guitar tone nerd.

    If you watch that interview with Ace (one of Slash’s guitar techs) he mentions that all the knobs on Slash’s Marshall’s are set at 1 o’clock and then dialed in based on how his amps sound in the venue they are playing. So it makes sense that Slash would sound different every night since his amp settings are likely never the same from venue to venue.
    There is also lots of footage (new and old) of Slash during sound check far out into where the crowd would be while playing. So if I was a betting man I’d guess redialing in his amps every night is something he might have always done. If I’m ever lucky enough to meet him I’ll ask lol.

    • @ShredHeads
      @ShredHeads  2 роки тому +2

      His tech probably tweaks stuff during sound check. The main point I try to make with all of my nail that tone videos is simple. Its impossible to replicate a tone 100%. Because of this fact, its better to try your best to get as close as you can with the gear you currently have. When any player goes on tour they try their best to replicate their studio tones. But again the best you can do is try and get as close as possible. They often don't really get that close but it's 100% understandable for many reasons.
      With certain guitar players or rare gear, there are people that like to create mysticism and proclaim that there is a secret to the tone and it can only be achieved with rare gear or mods. The truth is that no mod, amp, settings or pedals will replicate any tone. Gear can matter to a certain degree but even then certain variables are at play. It's better to improve as a musician and work on improving your ear or engineering skills so that your recordings will sound much better. Obsessing over gear is stupid and really won't help much in the long run.

    • @EverythingMusicRecording
      @EverythingMusicRecording 2 роки тому

      @@ShredHeads oh for sure his tech helps dial in the amps for shows. I’d guess Slash is out there saying “turn this up, turn that down a bit…) until it sounds right for the room.
      I 100% agree with you. You can never get someone else’s tone 100%. And studio vs live are two very different animals as well.
      I’ve never understood why some people obsess about trying to nail someone’s tone. I mean if someone’s in a cover band I suppose it makes sense to a degree. But to each their own.
      It’s always more interesting when someone takes influence from a few different guitarists sounds/styles and then tries to make something new out of it. But that’s just my 2 cents lol

    Regarding to Slash not using the same tone live, i dont think thats because he cant do it and it was the engeniers or smthn, why? Because slash once spoke about finding his 90s goldtop, he noticed it had this particular tone that he liked so much for the slower melodic solos that he decided he would use that guitar specifically for those songs so that tone change was intentional, he just liked the goldtop better for that job, he didnt use the goldtop or at least i didnt see it on his solo project because he didnt play those songs until GnR reunited and there we have the goldtop back

    • @ShredHeads
      @ShredHeads  Рік тому

      Thats an interesting theory but the most likely thing about your theory is that slash doesn’t want to sound the same live. Although I would argue that his live tone sounds considerably worse, so it doesn’t make sense to me why he would want to sound like that, especially compared to the studio tone. Studio tones are incredibly hard to replicate live because they were engineered in a studio with a lot of controlled variables which are hard to control in a live environment.

    • @rixxortiz8744
      @rixxortiz8744 Рік тому

      @@ShredHeads thing is, at the time, slash wasnt a big fan of any of those songs, november rain, estranged, he only recorded those because Axl insisted so much and thats why he stopped playing them after the bands break up, so it would make sense he probably didnt even care about keeping the tone consistent live for those or he was looking for something that made him want to play them probably being this guitar.
      also i can understand if you prefer the recording tone as a matter of personal taste, but his live tone for these songs is very sought after by a lot of people, even more than the studio one so i would argue that most of us do like the tone, ppl tend to call it the tokyo tone, i used to prefer the studio one at first but as time went by i've grown fond to the live one because i find it really peculiar, it reminds me to the sound of a sax, its like a middle ground between a sax and an electric guitar, ive been trying to get that tone too, but i havent been able to and now i find myself switching preference over these tones for time to time hahaha
      anyway, Slash has been able to get studio tones live, the AFD tone has be being probably the most sought after and ironically the most common for him to use live for a while now, im still fan of the UYI studio, its very peculiar being like robust and clear but at the same time distorted but i think the only part of it being almost imposible to keep consistent live is the feedback generator he used

    idk if it's because the video is 2 years old but this doesn't sound like Slash at all... you probably already know that after 2 years and the main reason it doesn't sound like Slash is because your amp settings is off, Slash also never used any distortion pedal in studio and you didn't use Slash's cabs or any parametric EQ to shape you tone which is actually Slash's secret weapon along with a half cocked wah for some solos.

      Just trust your ears. I’m happy to share my insight on what I know about slash but as you become more familiar with gear, it’s important to trust your setup, and your ears more than that of anybody online.

    Slash didn't sound shaky at all.

      His vibrato is pretty shaky. If you don’t think so, then you probably don’t understand the nuance of vibrato.

    Doesn't sound like the song at all, tone or play. Why does everyone want to put their own spin on it when we clearly clicked on a video to hear it played like the song?

      I’ll happily share your cover of this solo with my subscribers. I’m sure you have the tone and play (what ever the heck that means) nailed for sure.

    Sorry to say...but your sound has nothing to so with any of Slash’s sound. You are so cute when trying to analyse the secret but it is hidden in the preamp boost and the various mic positions...and last but not least you need to put a couple of graphic and parametric equalizers into the signal chain. You are asking “where”? 😊 Yes...that’s the secret what I know. 😜 There’s a huge difference between the studio and the live rig...

      There are many aspects to slash's sound especially if we are talking about the album tone. The whole point of the video is to try and help people get as close as possible with the gear they may have. Slash himself doesn't sound like the album, so it's important not to obsess over matching the tone exactly. Doing the best you can is what is important. Studying what was used on the album can help us get a bit closer. If you have the secret's like you claim I'll wait for your video of you playing this solo and I'll share it with my subscribers. 😜

      Six months later still waiting on donicetti to produce a video giving us slash's little secret 🤷 I have a feeling it's never going to arrive. So I'll do the next best thing and that's watch this video that points people in the right direction to achieve goals. The secrets to Slash's tone of the 80s '90s makes absolutely no difference any more. with today's technology it's possible to sound like are sound better than what was achievable back then without a million dollar studio. As of this message they're 3 are 4 guys on UA-cam capturing the November rain solo that's absolutely precise . what do they all have in common? They use computer software. Slash Himself doesn't always sound consistent with what most of us refer to as (Slash signature sound) So why should we hold someone else to a higher standard?
