Welcome to episode #1 of Iconic Tone - a new series on this channel where I'll be showing you how to dial in tones with your own gear at home that are reminiscent of some of the most iconic guitar sounds ever recorded.
In this pilot episode we're starting out with my original guitar hero - Slash. Specifically we'll be taking a look at his tone from the best debut rock album of all time, that being Guns N' Roses' Appetite for Destruction.
Outa Get Me sounds incredible with this tone. That riff is pure rock n roll
I keep watching this video over and over because the sounds are gorgeous, that Les Paul is gorgeous, and your Slash-style playing is so beautiful to hear too.
Even the precision and professionalism with which you explain every single step are beautiful too.
Ross that was magnificent. Your playing, the plug in and your superb ear for Slash's sound came together as something really useful for anyone in love with rock'n'roll and unlocking tone potential.
This was Slash’s best tone. He’s changed his tone and playing a lot over the years.
His tone sounds really flat I find, also I know his playing has always been very blues based but nowadays he leans more towards blues than hard rock in his solos. It just sounds very generic.
@@sgt.puddingslaps i think hes gotten better. More soulful expression to his leads. Hes my favorite tho too
What abt use your illusion?
@@sgt.puddingslapswhat you want is race not music
you haven't seen much
You are the boss! Got the fortin cali suite dialed the settings and got slash tone! Thanks a lot for the tips!
Love your Slash sound! Thanks
Really looking forward to the rest of these thank you!!
Thanks!
How has anyone not found sir 36 or 39 yet????? Sitting on gold. Music history.
Fantastic tips and tone with the plugin. Can’t wait to try the preset and tips. I think going along with the low gain kick is Angus Young. That would be a great upcoming episode.
Brilliant insightful advice. More slash videos please
Awesome 👍 You got it🙌
Watched this video on repeat just to listen to the isolated slash sound. Incredible work!
Awesome job recreating Slash’s tone!
Great job man!
Awesome new series. I hope you keep it up.
Thanks! Filming the next episode today.
This is such a terrific video for Appetite Slash tones, thanks Ross! And it's funny: this has made me realise just how much keeping the bass and mids in my lead tone is so ingrained that I honestly don't think I'd ever have figured out this particular tone without your help today! So again, thank you! Hmmm...future tones? Dialling in some Hendrix fuzz tones would be great, with octave fuzz tones a bonus.
Speaking of fuzz, Matt Bellamy's thick but still musical fuzz would be fantastic to get my head around too. Btw for reference, I'm using a HX Stomp and HXFX combined.
Thanks Suzy! Glad it was helpful. Great suggestions
awesome dude!!
this is by far the closest tone i've ever heard on youtube, specially with software, i think Andertons have a video playing all signature slash gear and is was very close as well, but your video is so educative, i'm trying to replicate it on Guitar Rig 6 with a Traditional Pro II epiphone, this is one of the tones i haven''t been able to replicate at it's best on that software, thanks for the content :D
Awesome 👌🏻
Great tone man!
Awesome man
Man, that reverb is amazing!
My gosh…. Spot on!! Keep on rockin Ross
Thanks!
Awesome video man!!
Thanks Curt!
The tone just sounds so incredible…
thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Sounds perfect. As an isolated track of the original....👍🏻
Thanks Antonio!
It sounds very similar, but original tone has less gain.
At last, someone who really got it! Great tips and great video!!
Awesome like always
Thank you!
Thank you my Man
wow that ws amazing
I love this vídeo, thanks
Slash is such a brilliant player
Perfect sound
I do happen to have a 1975 superlead….you’re spot on with avoiding over doing the gain. What I love about the superlead head is there is no gain setting 😂 just turn it up to about 6 and you’re set. That…and an attenuator to not kill your ears 🤘
Best capture of that time I have heard!
Thanks!
You are my hero.... thanks man!!!!
Evh tone would be awesome!! Love slash and your vids so much keep up the good work Ross!!
Excellent tone, video, and playing, especially the intro to My Michelle🤯
Please share as much as you can about the entire signal chain, starting with guitar pick (size, shape, and material :)
For instance, a hardwood pick will brighten and emphasize attack without affecting much else.
And the less popular fender 346 pick’s shape in white celluloid has a harmonic-rich midrange sound, but is more difficult to use than the usual 351
For the Jungle 1st solo opening, try this instead:
The TAB looks goofy here (sorry) but if you only pause at the ellipses and use the letters to tell you which strings you're on, you'll get it.
There are also a few open low E string notes he hits throughout I didn't include.
G 12 13... 13 13
D 11 12... 14 14
B 12 G 13... B 15
G 12 D 14... G 16
(second time)
G 12 13... B 15 15
D 11 12... G 13 13
B 14 15... E 15 15
G 15 16... B 15 15
thank you so much
Outstanding, just subbed ,
Awesome, thank you!
Insane!!!
Really opened my mind to experiment a bit, if I was on my own I would never dial back the low end and gain on my marshall pedal but I should try things out a bit more
Incredible
dig it, thanx
Nailed it, in the first video!
Loved this video! Would love to see one about SRV or even Angus Young because I feel like people also use way too much gain when replicating their tones!
I once borrowed a book with AC/DC riffs and and the author mention several times to NOT use a lot of gain.
@@reineh3477 Yeah I think it's more about the volume of the amps causing the break up, not adding distortion or overdrive to the sound!
Especially when playing live in a band. Very common mistake even among more seasoned players
I play with this plugin for about 95% of my studio time, it's really awesome!!!
Probably the best video on Slash's tone out there. I found this while trying to isolate slash in Mr Brownstone and did tip #2 and scooped the bass and bam! Nailed it. Question though, what is the echo you're using?
Slash is one of two guitarists whose tone I just love. The other is Tony Iommi. Be really cool to see a video like this on him!
Hey Ross, the opening lick in this video was spot on tone wise man.
Which Les Paul are you using here?
YES YES YES!!!
Would love to see you do a Clapton early 90s vid ,
Super 🤘✌️
Thanks!
Thanks Ross! I love the concept and idea of this series! Suggestion would be for me: John Frusciante :)
Hey Ross great pre brother ! The feel is right on. A lot of plugins lack the feel but this one nails it. Do you have your interface gain up at all ? I usually set my Apollo up +6 or so . How about you ?
Awesome! Thanks, Ross. I would also be interested in the vaunted David Gilmour live tone (Comfortably Numb) from the 1994 Division Bell tour, John Mayer’s dynamic live tones, and of course SRV. I appreciate your work and have enjoyed your channel for years. Excellent!
Thanks very much Scott! I'll take those suggestions on board
Will you do Slash Use your illusion tone?
Slash is the guy who saved the Les Paul from the scrap heap.
I love it
Thanks!
This is incredible! thank you for all the information and preset. May I ask It sounds real close from using the preset but I feel that I hear additional in post? Sweet child of mine is more thick here vs just the preset. Is there more comp or EQ addeed? Looking forward to your series on the website. Happy Holidays.
Man you did a great job, well done sir! Would love to see some Eric Johnson
Thanks Max! Great shout. I'll add him to the list
3 words... Fab U Lous!
great video. Are you using the hex drive as boost at some point of this video ? is your LP mounted with Duncan APHII pro? thanx
Jesus man.... Right on the spot. Great Job
Thanks Gabriel!
Awesome! Great recreation! Sounds spot on! Did it take a lot of work to dial it in? Did you try to listen to isolate tracks? Backing the gain off really did open up the dynamics of the pickups. Similar to how some people raise them up but if you lower them it has a similar effect. Will definitely be following this series!
I would love to see you recreate megadeth rust in peace tone. Marty's lead tones and rhythm
Thanks! Not really no. I've been playing GNR/Slash material for as long as I've been playing guitar pretty much, so I've always been very familiar with the tone.
This is very helpful tips! John Mayer tone please..thanks
Great video! What model LP and pickups are in this video?
Great tone, great playing !!
I know you told it, but I fell like there's too much low end even now 😅.
Cause if you listen the "isolated tracks", Slash is way more acid than this.
We tend to ignore it because we listen his tone within bass and drums in the mix.
That's why it seems beefier and fat.
Into a mix there's a lot to hi-pass here.
But you rock, man ! 🍻
Where is the part two? I need that!! Your videos are awesome! My god... These tones are really perfect i never heard here in UA-cam Marshally Slash Tones Like theese! Can you do the sams thing with UYI tones?
Thank you! I can certainly try
@@RossCampbellGuitarist yes man, thank you subscribed anyway!
4:18-4:25 that was basically Marty Friedmans rust in peace lead tone lol
Would like to see a vid on The Edge from U2.
absolutely NAILED it. also that guitar is so sick. major envy
Thanks!
@@RossCampbellGuitarist Hey Ross Campbell!
Please help me if you can!
I have a Marshall AVT100 combo.
And I really want the sound of Slash!
But I don't know how can I mixed that tone.
Please Sir, If you can help me cuz... Im beginner and my fav band is GNR and I learn some Guns songs and I need this tone :D
Thank you very much If you reply me Ross!
Best regards Bela!
Sounds close, maybe a tad too much delay.
Great video (and outstanding playing). You think a Wampler Plexi-drive is a good pedal to pull this off with?
Haven't tried it but yeah any Marshall style overdrive should help you get close
what finish is your guitar? its fantastic!
Would love to see a Michael Schenker video! Strangers in the Night era....
Even nowadays GN'R doesn't sound like this anymore
Outstanding but Ross please one question..what pups are in that beautifull lp? Thanks
Max ,Croatia
Very good approach of Slash's tone, the only thing I'd change is the bass part... Don't forget Slash used a modded Superlead on Appetite and those amps are already very trebly, specially cause ppl plug into the high treble input and jumper the other inputs for more body with an extra gain stage.. so I'd say keep the bass at least between 11-2 o clock otherwise your tone will sound extremely harsh and thin... also crank the presence instead of cranking the treble, that bite lies in the mid highs around 1-5khz, so I'd crank the mids and presence and roll back the treble around 11 o clock.
Be cool if after you'd covered some of the other iconic guitar tones if you could come back to look at Slash's 'use your illusion' tone as I think it's quite different from the appetite one.
You're right it is quite different. I think I will cover that further down the road
Very well done Ross! I’d love to hear your take on Joe Bonamassa’s tone during his Dumble/Marshall era. Take care
One of my favourite tones for sure. Great suggestion
@@RossCampbellGuitarist Yes please!! Joe Bonamassa!
I just use a DSL 1 watt head into Marshall 1X10 cabinet and my Les Paul studio tribute Cherry burst.
I paid under$1,000 for the whole setup !
Nice!
Wow Ross, that sounds identical. If DPS can Slash, I wonder if it can GaryM too? 🤔
Definitely. Either using this or the Soldano SLO-100 plugin
Great tone!!! What gauge strings are you using on your gear? I just changed to 11-49 better tone but more work.
10-46 here. Thanks!
Great job 👏👏👏
I'ld add SRV, Hendrix, Cory Wong, John Scofield, Jimmy Page, John Mayer, Joe Perry, Clapton, Joe Bonamassa, Philip Sayce, Neal Schon, Zakk Wylde, Satriani, Steve Vai, EVH, Dan Patlansky, Nick Johnston, Randy Rhoads, Richie Kotzen, Lenny Kravitz (Circus), Angus Young, Izzy Stradlin, Robby Krieger, The Edge, Blur, The Strokes, James Brown guitarists... ♾️
If you want cory wong get his presets for archtype cory wong lol
dude, you play great, but I have a question, which pedals do you use in Paradise city?
Great tones, nailed it!! Hey man, when you’re jamming through plugins what are you hearing as the output? Is it just your studio monitors? If so what size? I’m new to plugins and just want to make sure I’m using the right setup! Cheers 🤘🏻
Thanks! Yeah I use Yamaha HS5 monitors
@@RossCampbellGuitarist perfect, thanks for the info!
What do you use to get a good guitar tone? I mean when i connect it and play in neural dsp it sound very bad... like the tone is very low.
Do you take it through an amp head? Cab simulator?
Thanks for the help
If I want to simulate it on a multi-effects pedal board, would it take a Marshall amp? and another thing, that you took care of separately, some pedal, some delay, compressor, reverb, etc. Thank you very much for the video!
Hi Ross. This sounds awesome! Can I ask what gauge strings you used for this video please as this will also affect tone? Thanks for the video! Rolz.
Thanks! 10-46
@@RossCampbellGuitarist Thanks Ross. I’ll look forward to more ‘tone’ videos. Great addition to your channel! All the best.
Wich guitar Model and pickups you use in this vídeo?
Apart from Neural DSP, what reverb and eq settings have you used? Any compression and double tracking? It sounds so GOOD! iiii]; )'
None!
Came here looking for some insight on Slash's tone. Found someone trying to sell me amp plugins instead.
Hi, what kind of reverb did you use?
Since most of the tone is on the speaker, what IR was used?
Question…with gain and master so low, how do you get that Slash sustain and touch sensitivity? Is the plug-in amp THAT high gain, that even low gain is high gain…relatively?
Pretty much yeah. There's a lot of saturation on tap
I personally think you’re missing a bit of crunchhh but I love the tone.
How low or high is your action set?
Please do the episode of Angus Young!
I thought in a recent interview Saul said it was a early 70s super lead. It was modded though
