- IN THIS VIDEO I LOOK INTO THE NO REVERSE ISSUE WITH PROJECT EX-HAUL. I BOUGHT THIS TRUCK KNOWING IT HAD NO REVERSE. IT ALSO HAD A BUNCH OF ELECTRICAL ISSUES THAT KEPT IT FROM STARTING AND RUNNING. I GOT MOST OF THE OTHER ISSUES FIXED SO I COULD DRIVE IT HOME BUT THOUGHT I MIGHT NEED A TRANSMISSION. I SHOW HOW I WENT ABOUT FINDING THIS ISSUE. AFTER FINDING AND REPAIRING THE PROBLEM, I MAKE MORE PROGRESS ON THE REASSEMBLY. HOPE YOIU ENJOY.
Ok, even if we bought the "not a welder" thing, you cannot deny your ability to troubleshoot and repair electrical issues! Another great video JC!
im not a welder but i do love me some electrical problems!
I thought I was watching Eric O for a minute as fast as you found that broken wire--nice job !!
Mr. Smith, you approach to problems is commendable. I would be glad to purchase a vehicle from you.
Me too this man's work is how things should be done period 💯💯
Gotta love the someone has been here before repairs. That back frame looks good.
I had to stop 🛑 here to say I love it when it comes to troubleshooting and wiring repairs and wiring looms are awesome and spot on.and again your attention to detail on this project is above and beyond and this is why I love what you and Mrs JC Smith do on this UA-cam channel.
Nice work on the diagnosis and repairs J.C 😁👍

Love this project cool fix I wish I had patience for troubleshooting
I never thought about it before but I believe you proved the wiring loom is designed to protect the electrical wires while they are under warranty. Then they work to cause problems so the manufacturers can sell more new vehicles. Thank you for taking us along you do great repairs. Tom
Man i wish all tec. Were like you and be real mechanics and take pride in there work like you do great video as always JC
That’s a really common area for the wires to rub and break on that chassis. Used to see them all the time when I worked at GMC.
Probably too tight of a radius or something
Another great informative video. I hope Jeff is doing OK.
Mr JC Thanks for sharing and stay safe

Good detail and excellent teaching. Keep up the good work
I love that you break stuff down....I'm super annoying with questions and I literally can ask questions to myself threw your videos and you give me an answer everytime lol....love it glad you found the fix!!!
i started doing youtube to share some of the problems i ran across in hopes it would help someone else in the same situation. i couldnt find anything on youtube that went through the entire process. so i started doing what i couldnt find.
Great video J.C.Smith really enjoy watching you troubleshoot the no reverse problem on this truck. Glad you were able to fix this problem and the wiring back the way it should've been from the factory. Looking forward to the next part of this build stay safe Mr & Mrs J.C.Smith.
nice job j.c. good catch on the wiring always a learning video thanks Chris from Cashmere
I love how you make everything look factory. Love your work an videos
J.C. You do nice work, u haul , had training classes for there techs back in the 80 dees one of the things they would teach is you can fix any truck if you can find the answer to these three questions 1) confirm the complaint 2) find the cause of the problem 3) confirm the repair. I thought it was a great thing to teach new technicians….
Fully enjoyed today's video, U R one smart cookie my friend & Ur workmanship is 2nd to none. Thank U for taking us to school!
I tell you what, I would buy a truck from you knowing how meticulous you are about making things right with an issue when you come across them. I enjoy your videos thanks for taking the time to make them.
Electrical gremlin's Nightmare . Great lessons J.C. & Mrs. J,C.

Sir not sure if you cought it but at the 1013 moment of the video i noticed when you were pointing with your fingers at the harnes as you passed over the hose beside it i noticed a rub spot on the side of the hose in addition to a few scuff marks on it this is why I enjoy your channel as you share with us who follow along you educated us as you state cause and effect
what you might be seeing is the metal dipstick tube. i brushed some of the dirt off in a few places.
Thank you for explaining what I saw and the part it was again Iv come to appreciate everyone of your you Tube video Post for the educational value as much as the projects keep sharing
Thank you
You do great work smithy cheers
i cant get de-oxit here in Australia, great find and repair mate
The zip tie thing was something I never knew about. Can’t believe they cut all those wires and still missed it
NEVER DOUBTED YOU MR JC SMITH not for 1sec you wouldn't fix reverse. 💯
Quality.
Nice work. Thanks
Really loving the videos!
A good truck
The twisted wires may be canbus. I just went through a similar situation with a gas npr
I was looking for:” You are watching JC Smith and I approve this message” …
But i must have missed it in the first 30 seconds
You sure do nice work.
Cool.. Good Job.
That truck might be good with a sleeper n a hauling bed? It could probably use a control harness n olug for that Allison's. All the ATF it was leaking through.
In the words or Eric O, SMA "Green crusties!!"
15:20 I feel so honored …. Was that just for me ?!?
it was.
A 1976 the Ford F-350 U-Haul with special made for U-Haul they put a f600 transmission in it for the U-Haul company Ford special order
29:40 When you route the wire loom through the hole in the frame, does the plastic loom provide enough protection or do you add a grommet?
if its a loose hole, i put a grommet. if its tight enough and the wire loom cant move, , i dont.
never understood wiring and the way most do it. the other day was watching a repair had i think 5 wires he used the same color on all of them. i had to wire a relay on a f250 today i moved the wires in the replacement pigtail to match original wiring. imostly work on dodge pickup but i bet i have 15 or 20 complete harnesses to pull wire from to match original only takes a few minutes to do it correctly
Laziness
Are you going to use grommets where the fuel lines go through the frame?
just saw your ?, oops.
no b ut i did use a section of hose over it.
First and ready for it!
I have a former uhaul c5500 currently I would absolutely love to have another.
Where do you list your trucks for sale as I would love the opportunity to have something that you’ve had your hands on as I feel it’s been properly handled
you can email me "j.c.smithprojects@gmail.com"
one word of caution on 'largefleet' GM's with Allisons. They spec'd out those trucks down to the penny-most of them will have a 6-bolt PTO cover with no gear inside to drive one,ask me how I know-LOL
i always run the trans serial number before i buy a truck to know if it is there or not. never bought any uhaul ever that had one. i addressed this is part 1 of this series. many folks have made this mistake.
There is a fix for that leaky transmission connector. Rubber gasket thing just pops out and you slide a new one in
Inside trans or outside?
I see cummins are bringing out a 6.7 gas engine inline 6 with 350hp and 660fbt,,That's massive torque figures for a gas engine,,
hopefully it does better than the train wreck of natural gas engines they tried.
Thorough.
What is the CA and Cab to end of frame now? U-Haul says on their sight that these trucks are rated to tow only 7500 lbs. I find that hard to believe. That had to be a function of its original intended use with a heavy box and the flimsy bumper you removed. I would think after you put the hitch plate on it, it could easily do 15-20K pulling. Not sure what the axle is rated for, but with a GN or 5W, I would think it could do that too, only more stable. Do you know? If you buy from the U-H website, they have the maintenance records of the stuff they did. They tend to let the oil changes go for 7500 miles and wait until well into the +100K before changing the trans fluid. Did you get any of that info? I am wondering with the VIN if they would give it to you. They say those are 20K GVW and the chassis weight w/o the box is 9780 on the U-H site. That seems high, but I suppose. I had an '03 C5500 CC with a steel hauler body and weighed it on a scale. That came in at 11K, but it had the CC, Hauler, and the Duramax. That '03 had a 19500 GVWR (not 20K...maybe they round) a GCWR of 26K, and a 13500 GAWR. If your '05 is the same and someone put a bed on it, then I guess if could haul about 15K then. Sounds about right I think.
its 86" ca. 10ft to end of frame. uhaul rates them to tow that with their little hitch on the rear. i have towed over 26k with my 4500. this truck has a 13,500 rear axle. i went over the service records before i bought it. 9780 seems high to me as well. last one of these i built was same length but diesel and a 10ft steel bed and it was close to that. gcvwr isnt listed on this truck. most people (including our state police) go by axle ratings. know what they are rated for and dont overload them.
Sometimes it's sabotage J.C specially depending were u buy them from
Why is it necessary to twist the wires?
every wire carrying a signal creates an electromagnetic radiation. this is a magnetic field around the wire. this can interrupt or interfere with communications. commonly referred to as "noise". the twisted pair reduces the amount of electromagnetic radiation.
Is that your son’s white super duty in the background that you have previous videos of? What happend to it?
getting body work done
😎👍
What tires will you use?
265/75/22.5? Low profile?
245/75r19.5
You got a part number on rear shocks was told on my retired Uhaul there not available
take a wire wheel to yours. the part number is usually stamped on them.
Haaa wire loom damage shocker not to me not something the normal car or light truck repair person runs across to much. I seen enough of it repairing commercial trucks bad repairs been dealing with trash trucks for over 12 years front loaders are the some of the worst to deal with fiuld leaks exhuast heat and trash that gets over the packer wall replaced many trannsmisson harness in mack mru's and leu's oh so fun.
Need a heat shield
Wassup
10k is kinda cheap no?
i guess it depends on the person. for all the work i am putting into it? yes i think it is a good value. could i get more? maybe. maybe not. i set my price and i dont negotiate. that is what it takes to buy it. potential buyers know it going in. if they want it, there is the price. if they dont, i hope they find what they are looking for.
Make the repair correct, make it once, and make it last. Too much for a hack tech to understand!
sorry to be a twat but the word soder has an L in it, the word is solder--solder
well then dont be. i have faith in you. you can do better. give it a try.
sol·der

I replaced a lot of selector shaft seals on those
Those harnesses were always soaked
