2005 C4500 FIXING WHAT GM & MONROE SCREWED UP!PT1

  • THIS IS GOING TO UPSET A LOT OF FOLKS BUT HERE IS THE REALY....THIS TRUCK HAS NEVER HAD THE POWER AND TOQUE THAT A TRUCK THIS SIZE SHOULD. IT DOESNT TOW WELL. FUEL MILEAGE IS AWFUL. THE MONROE DUALLY BED IS MADE POORLY. THE OUSTSIDES ARE FIBERGLASS AND WAVY. THE BED IS TOO HIGH FOR ANY PRACTICAL USE. I AM ALWAYS WATCHING MY TRAILER DOESNT SMASH THE TOP RAILS WHEN I HAVE A GOOSENECK OR 5TH WHEEL HOOKED UP. THE BED MOUTING SUB FRAME WAS CONFUSING TO ME. SOLID MOUNTED IN THE CENTER AND A SINGLE RUBBER MOUNT FRONT AND BACK. THE TRUCK RIDES AWFUL. THE "LINK" REAR AIR SUSPENSION ENGINEERING AND GEOMETRY COULD HAVE BEEN DONE SO MUCH BETTER. USED THE FACTORY BUMP STOPS AND A SHORT AIR BAG. THIS LEFT LIMITED TRAVEL. THE TRUCK WAS CONSTANTLY BOTTOMING OUT ON THE BUMP STOPS. SHORT AIR BAG WITH LIMITED TRAVEL REQUIRES MORE AIR PRESSURE TO KEEP IT FROM BOTTOMING OUT....MORE AIR PRESSURE IS A ROUGHER RIDE. THE BRAKE WARNING SYSTEM ON THESE TRUCKS IS A CONSTANT ISSUE. THE BRAKES THEM SELVES ARE GOOD AND HANDLE A LOADED TRAILER WELL.
SO HERE WE GO....WE ARE GOING TO BUILD THE TRUCK THAT GM SHOULD HAVE! THIS IS GOING TO BE A VERY LONG VIDEOS SERIES AND TAKE AN EXTREMELY LONG TIME TO COMPLETE. IT WONT BE CHEAP BUT IT WILL BE WHAT I NEED AND WANT THE TRUCK TO BE. THE BIG QUESTION STILL REMAINS......IS IT ALL WORTH IT?

You mentioned that you were fixing everything that GM did wrong, from what I can tell you are putting it back to what GM originally built and the secondary vendor messed up. I have a 05 5500 ex U haul truck with the gas motor. This truck has been the best purchase that I have ever made, after cutting the frame and adding a 16 foot flat bed it performs great every time I use it.
I’m glad to see you making the the truck you need rather going to buy what someone else is trying to sell, that is what got you to this spot in the first place. Good luck!

keep watching. you will see what i mean by fixing everything gm did wrong. the old uhaul c5500's are very capable trucks for a gas engine. i would say far better than the only other available truck its size at that time which was a ford f450 v10. dont misunderstand, the cab is why i bought the truck....the rest of it was not what i wanted. i knew if i bought it and kept it long enough, i would be doing this build.

@@j.c.smithprojects as you mentioned the cab space and how high it sits on the road helps with visibility, I weigh in at 12,500lbs unloaded that makes a big difference with handling when hauling on the truck or with a trailer. Good luck with the build!!

👍👌👏 Uuuuh, this is very interesting. Selling all those very special parts will give you a lot of budget to build what you really want/need/like. This double cab dually pickup truck is definitely bigger than I thought it is.
I'm eagerly looking forward to watch the next part of the series. Please nevertheless don't forget Misses Smith's micro dump truck.

The day my last 4500-8500 series GM got sold was a great day for me. I agree with you on the Duramax, the crappy GM van interior and the lousy wiring harness and ABS/brake wiring. The weight was a problem for me trying to run them commercially and legally- my 03 Duramax dump had a 16k GVWR and a curb weight of just over 13k with a driver- so it was pretty useless if you wanted to run legal. Looking forward to the series!

I'm always leery of aftermarket upfitters. The quality is usually pretty shoddy. At the dealership I work for, we got a couple Express conversion vans through that were done by Explorer. Seems like everything was held in place with self tapping sheetmetal screws. The exhausts didn't clear the plastic fenders, so they ended up melting them(added tips to remedy it). Also had to move the anchors for a cooler because it wouldn't latch. I feel bad for whoever has to work on them down the road.

i have done a tone of axle moves on trucks. did the first 10 or so with a cordless drill and drill bits from 1/4" up to 5/8". drilling in steps. in hindsight, i would have rented a magnetic base drill. it would have saved so much time and is much easier on the body.

I am surprised about the clearance issues with the bed I can only assume it was designed for towing a fifth wheel camper to be used by someone with too much money. This will be interesting.

I just picked up a 2008 5500 from a construction company. It's dirty as hell inside, but it's the color you're looking for (cloth seats). The drivers seat air ride system is deflated... I haven't gotten to it yet. The panels are all broken. But I'm interested in your seats if you've still got them. How can I get in contact with you?
