Frankly speaking, even ancient Indian princes adorned themselves with jewellery, kajal and even kept long hair. In fact the present idea of masculinity amongst our generations is more a continuance of the Victorian notions from the Colonial times.
Actually it was not used to as a symbol of masculinity at all it was mostly used in ancient time as a tool to distinguish a royalty and a commoner.. Royalty usually wore lavish clothing and jwellery as well have a good skin and hair care..
a shout out of appreciation for taking this topic up and then instead of giving a judgement, this video puts views and facts... hope ppl really hear it with open mind and understand the importance of gender appreciation instead of reinforcing pre-existing ideas.
I think these topics should be discussed in classrooms more, taking the notes what students think. Students can be easily told that they are wrong and they accept it. But when a person grows up with the wrong concept and suddenly someone tries to change their thinking, they don't readily accept it and act stubborn.
You can't say that it is a wrong concept you don't think the life style depends on were the people live koreans can wear makeup like stuff because their skin is like that and they look good but this makeup stuff for men in India its not the right think our skin our rough look our features are different I can't imagine in the streets of Mumbai guys are wearing makeup think about it not everything is good for everyone

So in my opinion schools should develop more in teaching us about wrong thinking patterns.
It's completely fine if someone doesn't like a man with make up and a woman with an artificial beard. Don't think of yourself as stereotype and conservative. You have right to chose your preferences. I am an Indian woman and over the past few years have interacted with many Koreans. I agree that there is a gender divide in Korea, which is widely seen in the working culture there. There are many issues between the genders(eg . Men feel unfairly treated due to the mandatory military service and women feel unfairly treated which has led to the agressive feminism movement in Korea, which is not what we would consider feminism to be). However, I will point out that I noticed a stark difference between how Korean men treat women vs what happens back at home. I don't want to say that they treat women with more respect. I would rather say that they treated women in more or less the same way they treated men. And sometimes I feel that is what women really want. To be treated like a fellow human, than being treated as a person of the opposite gender. An interesting thing to point out would be the gaming culture in Korea. A lot of Koreans game and I was pleasantly surprised to see so many women in it. And they are not berated saying women don't know how to game, or ridiculed or made fun of. They genuinely feel women can do it too and don't go all crazy just because a woman is part of their team. II really liked seeing such a safe and supportive community during my time with them. I will also say that toxic masculinity in Korea is present in the military. If anyone wants to know more about it, I recommend watching the drama DP on Netflix.

Dear Mohak, I totally agree with your point that wearing makeup should not be the basis to define a person's gender and I am really glad you talked about it. Sorry to write a long comment but could not explain it in fewer words. Let me throw some light on Hinduism and ancient cultures on the beauty of men. Sanatan Dharma and our Vedic culture promoted Shree which not only means wealth but also opulence of beauty which should be a part of everyone's life. Shree Krishna is an example without explanation. so does this affect his masculinity, Mahadev, really strong and a vairagi still ornamented himself and his beauty is incomparable and he depicts a mixture of soft and hard beauty (masculinity). Now come to kings to local villagers, all with respect to their will/ need/ wish beautified themselves. Some of the beautifications like mehndi also have health benefit aspects related to them and that is not all. So, the conclusion of all lines above is that no one questioned a person's masculinity based on their appearance (attractiveness is another thing). Masculinity should be based on whether he is able to protect his family, is he able to nurture and feed his family, and whether he is able to guide his family to righteousness. Just see what are the 7 oaths taken by men during the wedding you will realize what is the position of men and women (both are equal). Since I have talked a lot, just want to say this is inconsistent with all religions and ancient cultures if suspected closely like Egypt for example. But few cultures, as time progressed, who were not into intellectual progression and peace instead wanted to satisfy their greed, lust and ego they just made definitions so hard and clear that suppressed free-thinking which soon became the norm. Last one thing: - see each society before colonizations and invasions.
Yes i agree with this but wear makeup and adopting soft masculinity can create feeling of insecure of our face and appearance what now all women are facing.

But, way you described about current South Korean culture I cannot help but wonder, isn't it now becoming a problem in their society? Like, if every man takes makeup in their society, job market accepts it as norm and majority of females prefer it; Isn't men who don't want to take makeups are in danger? Aren't they forced to go with the flow because society now demands them to look good at any means necessary to look "normal"?

Makeup is personal preference irrespective of gender. I personally don't like makeup. I like real person. No offence to those who loves or prefer makeup.
I like the message you conveyed in the end "to put an end to toxic masculinity". Honestly, it's so important because young boys are taught from an early age to show no emotions or to not cry which is so wrong as men have emotions too and they are human beings just like other genders. It's feels like 'anger' is the only emotion a guy should have which is really toxic for him and his family. Also, I personally like guys who wear guy liners, kohl and nail paint if it suits them. But I won't go for dudes who put on lipstick and other stuff. But that doesn't mean we shame those men who like wearing makeup and also no need to shame men who don't like wearing makeup. I've also seen men who also shame women for wearing makeup calling her 'insecured' and 'fake'. Masculinity and femininity shouldn't really have a definition. Every boy and girl is very different. It's important to respect everyone's choices without being toxic.
If only 50% of men in India understood it then India will develop so rapidly. I hate toxic masculinity like men are also human and humans have feelings. They are not tree or stone that they will not have feeling. People need to understand that crying is ok ,showing your emotions is ok being a human is ok. Feelings are an important trait of humans so men should be equally treated even after showing their emotions and feeling. Otherwise their isn't much difference between men and tree. Trees breath, live and doesn't show their emotions men will also become like that.
Everyone should express his/her feeling without hesitation, it not make them look weak but it makes people mentally strong. Thank you for talking about it and represent it between us so nicely

Korean Men: South Korean men are the most highly regarded in the world among Korea, Japan and China, but I think the reality is not. Korean men are not as unique as Japanese men, nor are they as smart as Chinese men. On a personal basis, Korean men are the ugliest of the three countries. Korean men are the tallest, but have the smallest eyes. Korean plastic surgery: Living in South Korea, I realized that South Korean plastic surgery is not as serious as the Western press exaggerates. However, it is still at a serious level worldwide. In other words, not all good looking South Koreans have plastic surgery. There are many naturally good-looking people around me, but there is a certain percentage of people with as good looks anywhere in the world. If we limit ourselves to those who have not undergone plastic surgery, the percentage is not higher than the world average. Although the amount of plastic surgery in South Korea is the highest in the world, most of them are simple upper eyelid surgery. The United States ranks first in plastic surgery sales, because major surgeries such as breast surgery are the mainstream. (In South Korea, large breasts are traditionally not a standard of beauty, so very few people have plastic surgery there)

I know people should focus on inner beauty rather than physical beauty and i hope someday this happens but at present time this is the harsh reality even when we choose what to wear we first see that if it looks good or not then see that if it is of good fabric or company or price it is basic human nature the first thing that comes to mind is looking good
Its always surprises me, each and everytime, when I hear from men that they don't talk about their emotions to each other in a serious way because I've always had friends of various genders come and talk about their experiences and emotions naturally. It never occurred to me until recently that I've never thought very much about relationships amongst men and maybe that's why this comes as such a shock to me. Edit: After reading various comments, it is surprising to see the negative connotations associated with makeup. Makeup, yes can be used to hide your insecurities but it can also be used as fun or as an expression of self. You can either write with a pen or use it to stab each other. Makeup or a pen by itself isn't evil!
If your masculinity is so fragile that it would get crushed by wearing make-up, then what's the point of being a man? Dear men, please feel free to do what you like and express yourself openly (of course as long as it doesn't hurt others). People who tease you are the only ones who are narrow-minded and ignorant and can't understand the maturity of embracing oneself, so don't mind them. You do you.
If I'm applying makeup then I'm insecure about something and not confident about it. Now tell me the ones who wear makeup are having fragile masculinity or those who aren't having that??
@@shreeshiva9421 make up is not so much about cover up, than it is about enhancement. It's like a form of art, which requires skills, and it is more nuanced that just "covering up". It is, most times, a means of expression. Also, your point could be applied to women as well, not only men, which erases the dichotomy altogether. These are two different debates. The subject at hand in this video is, will a little bit of make up change your whole gender? You tell me. Will it? It's just a superficial form of enhancement that anyone is free to use, regardless of gender, and that's what I am trying to point out. Lots of men who want to wear make up are being discriminated against, especially in our country. I simply stand for them, because they have the right to do whatever they want, without having to worry about narrow-minded people who fail to understand the bigger picture.
@@sanninlegends1843 : And u need to coverup or enhance something only if u don't want others to look u that way right?? Look if makeup is being applied just for little enhancement np, but there are people (mostly women) who just look altogether different person when makeup is removed. I don't think wearing makeup denies masculinity of man, but just because someone criticises it how can u guys be so quick to judge them and call "masculinity fragile??". Isnt that wrong as well?? Actually I saw too many similar comments in the section saying FRAGILE MASCULINITY, just replied to urs nothing personal And yes, I think no one should wear makeup whether they are man or woman
@@shreeshiva9421 I understand what you're saying, but let's take this analogy: Make up is like wearing clothes. Some people like wearing nice shirts etc, so we should let them have fun. Some people like being shirtless, we should let them have fun too. Surely, I'm not saying "All the people in the world *should* wear make-up!" I'm just saying, let's not give shade to those who want to wear it and like to wear it. 'Cos ultimately it's their life and their choice. I'll reiterate the important point again: Wearing make up is like wearing clothes. If you like it, do it. If you don't like it, then don't do it. Presence or absence of make up, doesn't decide one's gender (just like clothes) Let's all be nice to each other and not give any shame to people who like using make up.
7:07 Masculinity in its own isnt toxic at all! Being hard and strong is perfectly i repeat Perfectly fine, and great..and it goes equally to the soft masculine side..i think now the world is thoroughly confusing masculinity as being toxic rather than understand what real toxicity is..and isnt able to differentiate..being who you choose to be yourself is upto you!
I agree with whatever you have said about the masculinity in India. I have a lot of male friends and honestly, most of them discusses with me about thier break ups, heartbreaks, self doubt, even my little brother also, who finds it difficult to express himself before his friends. Like in girls night stay, we girls discuss about life, bfs, relationships, career etc but in guy's groups, all they do is 'guy talk' about girls and stuff. The guys generally do not talk about feelings or emotions, mostly when the guys hang out, they either make fun of each others, or discuss about politics, cricket, soccer etc but not about feelings and stuff. But the same guys, when they hangout with their gfs or female friends, they talk about their insecurities and raw emotions. One of my childhood gali ka friend told me one that its easier for him to talk about his emotions to me or his gf. Also, I stay with my bf, and he loves to do skincare routine, massages or make ups. Whenever, I do my night routine, or skincare routine on my week offs he immediately comes up to me saying he too wants it and if I don't do it, he will fight with me. He is fond of massages too, which is why, one day he called a muscular man who literally crushed his bones which he enjoyed a lot. My bf is okay with doing make up not much fond of it, even when I do it. One day I did his make up because we were going to attend a marriage ceremony of our friend, of course, I was all decked up, he felt as if he was falling flat before my dress up so he got a little upset saying, "I looking like an ugly idiot before you who do not deserve you." I felt bad, I didn't want to compromise either, so I did his make up very subtly, it didn't change his appearance completely, but ut sure did enhance his features a little bit. He felt so confident that it lifted his hopes and spirits high. People did compliment him on that wedding and he felt amazing that night that he wasn't moving away from the mirror that night. I was very happy for him. From then onwards, he started liking make ups but he asl me to do it on him on very special occasions not like me who does make up almost everyday. Hence, make up is someone's personal choice, people shouldn't be making fun of someone doing or not doing make up.
In India, it is a very hush hush thing. I know some guys who does make ups and skincare routine like my bf but they do not accept it or shy away or asks their gfs, female friends, sisters to not to disclose about it before anyone. I do not understand that why guys do not talk about real things.
I really appreciate your approach towards this topic, I'm an EXO-L myself, and I hear hate comments, typically on their looks, which I kind of don't agree with. Pop culture was made to spread music without barriers of language, but instead people picking on individual artist is just not fair.

my skin today has next level glow because i started following a routine followed by many korean females and even males (im a TXT stan and i loved how yeonjun's skin glowed in most of their MVs so it was also an inspo). i even started enjoying skincare since they have this term "skin entertainment" where you take care of your skin and enjoy this process. so it is like a me-time. this has been taught to them since generations. today almost everyone around me asks what i did to my skin, and im proud of taking out the time for myself:)
In short makeup is not specifically made for women ,men can use it too...make up is made to specify facial features more beautifully so any one can use it ✨✨
Not that I'm against this "make-up for men" thing, but do keep in mind that *we are talking about a country which has highest rate of cosmetic surgery in the world*
also i should add why plastic surgeries are so famous over there and normalised. in the past century koreans were ridiculed for their natural looks, especially by the American military which was stationed there. those doctors performed surgeries on women to make their eyes bigger etc using unsafe practices.this is believed to have distorted their standards of beauty

Its Also affordability. India is still a very poor country and many don't even have enough food to eat let alone spend money on skin scare and beauty etc. South Korea on the other hand is one of the most developed and rich countries in the world. I see this as more economic

Make ups can never bring tenderness or emotions in a person, it needs something more impactful than these sources of outer beauty. When we talk about soft masculinity, it is something innate and make ups can never help bringing that.
Yes it's true & infact Korea sees lot of outer beauty standards as indication of wealth, status & hygiene. Infact they despise people with hair. In South Korea the beauty standards have been set impulsive practices that men need to adopt too like how women need to be attractive in corporate jobs & have a trimmed look. I understand soft masculinity but Korean society is actually more racial & un(up) rooted society who themselves look down on their own traditional values. Currently consumerism dominates them, even US doesn't have this type standards
And make it stupid like women culture. Imagine spending so much of money on looks and then talking about wage gap. You need to invest money at right place so in order to make more from it
North Koreans are forced to maintain a particular look. They are not allowed to experss themselves through clothes or makeup or even hairstyles. In North Korea, misogynistic and patriarchal Indian men forced other Indian men to stay masculine according to patriachal standards and in North Korea their dictor forces NK's men to stay masculine according to the patriachal standards.
There are pros and cons in wearing makeup, pros were discussed in these video, the cons are if guys start wear makeup there there would be a certain standards to keep for the men in the society too and the men who wouldn't want to wear makeup would be forced to wear makeup to look a certain way and beauty brands will take advantage of it, so it's a double edged sword
hey, that is what has been happening to women for centuries !! can you even imagine how many billions were made by capitalizing women's insecurities that aside, I think makeup should be seen as an allegory for, men should not be ridiculed for wanting to look good. men should not be called names or insulted if they have any traditionally feminine interests.
True as it happens to women but if we start to change how we see things and how we accept those flaws it'll be much easier to Express ourselves.just by being open minded we can break that sword 😁
I often apply balck nailpolish on my left hand, it looks extremely aesthetic over loose oversized clothes, if you know what I'm saying. But whenever i dress like that i keep on being judged by people around me, like you are judging me right now :D even my parents but now they are okay with that, people say that that's something girls do, and people say it looks gayish, dude I am more straight than most of the people watching this video. "Your OUTFIT doesn't define your sexuality" That's something we have made watching people around us since back then. 🤷🏻♂️
Black nailpolish + oversized clothes! I love that look. Don't listen to others, you're amazing. Its so rare for an indian man to have that sort of fashion sense
Why anyone wears makeup, learn to be confident in your own skin. Skincare is acceptable but catfishing isn't Edit - Those who are trying to defend wearing makeup and using clothing as an analogy for it. Please stop embarrassing yourself and educate yourself from a socio-economic and historically manipulated business strategies standpoint. Learn not to be offended unnecessarily and don't give your pointless opinion about judging someone. No one wants an opinion that lacks complete perspective.
then why wear clothes, aren't you confident enough in your own "skin"? Also you can't ask someone to feel confident when you don't know what they're facing everyday! Address the society to not judge people, make them comfortable.
Wearing makeup doesn't mean feeling inferior about their own skin... Like we wear fashionable clothes, different hairstyles and different accessories... Similarly we wear makeup to look good for ourselves...
Wearing make up is to accentuate our natural beauty not to give us a whole new look. It is supposed to highlight our already present looks in a more well moulded way. Just because someone wears makeup doesn't mean they are uncomfortable with the way they look or feel inferior or less confident.

Hii
We need more man Like him I appreciate your knowledge and mentality bro🩷
I think these topics should be discussed in classrooms more, taking the notes what students think. Students can be easily told that they are wrong and they accept it. But when a person grows up with the wrong concept and suddenly someone tries to change their thinking, they don't readily accept it and act stubborn.
You can't say that it is a wrong concept you don't think the life style depends on were the people live koreans can wear makeup like stuff because their skin is like that and they look good but this makeup stuff for men in India its not the right think our skin our rough look our features are different
I can't imagine in the streets of Mumbai guys are wearing makeup think about it not everything is good for everyone
But the problem is even the kids (most of them, not all) these days think they're even more mature than the adults, they think only their way of thinking is right, and most of them would probably act as stubborn as the grown-ups would do, if this ever happens... sharing from my own experience as a part of the upcoming generation. But wait-
Who's even going to educate the youth on these need-of-the-time topics? Indian Education System and Schools? Lol sounds like a joke..
-_-
@@shivang1158 I agree that our skin textures are different but if someone wants to try that too, we should accept that. And only make-up is not the way how soft masculinity is practised. Men in India are criticised for choosing softness (not only in India) because we have that image of how men should be since our childhood. So in my opinion schools should develop more in teaching us about wrong thinking patterns.
It's completely fine if someone doesn't like a man with make up and a woman with an artificial beard. Don't think of yourself as stereotype and conservative. You have right to chose your preferences.
But this doesn't give you right to criticize, make fun of other guy as he has also complete right to wear makeup or beard. Keep your criticism to yourself.

My geography teacher is a soft masculinity man.
It's been 3 months since i know him . He teaches very well . He talks calm and soft . At first, me , myself, find it strange, even my classmate say this thing. It's because of the society and education system that we are not given proper knowledge about vital subjects like this. That's why I find it strange. But now i clearly appreciate and understand him . He's brave that he's showing what he likes or not by his social media. He even have a UA-cam channel where he again speaks soft.

Dear Mohak,
I totally agree with your point that wearing makeup should not be the basis to define a person's gender and I am really glad you talked about it.

Is it rule written anywhere?
If only 50% of men in India understood it then India will develop so rapidly. I hate toxic masculinity like men are also human and humans have feelings. They are not tree or stone that they will not have feeling. People need to understand that crying is ok ,showing your emotions is ok being a human is ok. Feelings are an important trait of humans so men should be equally treated even after showing their emotions and feeling. Otherwise their isn't much difference between men and tree. Trees breath, live and doesn't show their emotions men will also become like that.

Will it? @@sanninlegends1843 : And u need to coverup or enhance something only if u don't want others to look u that way right?? Look if makeup is being applied just for little enhancement np, but there are people (mostly women) who just look altogether different person when makeup is removed. I don't think wearing makeup denies masculinity of man, but just because someone criticises it how can u guys be so quick to judge them and call "masculinity fragile??". Isnt that wrong as well?? Actually I saw too many similar comments in the section saying FRAGILE MASCULINITY, just replied to urs nothing personal
And yes, I think no one should wear makeup whether they are man or woman
@@shreeshiva9421 I understand what you're saying, but let's take this analogy:
Make up is like wearing clothes.
I'll reiterate the important point again:
Wearing make up is like wearing clothes. If you like it, do it. If you don't like it, then don't do it. Presence or absence of make up, doesn't decide one's gender (just like clothes)
Let's all be nice to each other and not give any shame to people who like using make up.

I totally disagree with it.. If they are spreading music then they should more concerned about their music not looks.. Even we have musicians.. But they choose to sell their looks rather than music.. Now every side have it's own pros and cons.. They are liked by millions for working on their feminine looks and so as well hated for it by millions.. I don't see anything wrong in it

that's just their culture, people should be allowed to wear makeup or skin care if they want, south korea as a nation puts overwhelming emplasis on looks of a person thats why plastic surgery is so popular there, india is different not a lot of people care about looks but it''s ignorance to think that men dont wear makeup here cuz there is a high chance that whoever is your fav movie star/model/actor has worn makeup before cuz it's part of their job. its really a matter of personal preference idk why this has to be such big deal.
Its Also affordability.
India is still a very poor country and many don't even have enough food to eat let alone spend money on skin scare and beauty etc.
South Korea on the other hand is one of the most developed and rich countries in the world.
I see this as more economic
not a lot of people care about looks?

Make ups can never bring tenderness or emotions in a person, it needs something more impactful than these sources of outer beauty. When we talk about soft masculinity, it is something innate and make ups can never help bringing that.
That's the exact thing i was thinking for inner changes we need to work on inside not outside like makeup.
Finally, this comment I was looking for....hope people should realise this 🙏🏻
Yes it's true & infact Korea sees lot of outer beauty standards as indication of wealth, status & hygiene.
Yes his video was useless on this topic
I've a soft masculinity and I never wanted to be "the man" or something. I hope this video can move people who watch it. Thanks.
This is not even a thing be whatever you want you guys are portraying manliness is bad and flowerboy is a great thing
I get a positive attitude and become more confident after listening blackpink and BTS songs💝
It gives me great hope to see men making content that encourages introspection within male culture.
And make it stupid like women culture. Imagine spending so much of money on looks and then talking about wage gap. You need to invest money at right place so in order to make more from it
South Korea- soft Musculine
North Korea- Hard Masculine
🤔🤔🤔🤔
North Koreans are forced to maintain a particular look. They are not allowed to experss themselves through clothes or makeup or even hairstyles. In North Korea, misogynistic and patriarchal Indian men forced other Indian men to stay masculine according to patriachal standards and in North Korea their dictor forces NK's men to stay masculine according to the patriachal standards.

Also them in 2100 : I can't say this😶😶😶

Bro you are doing great work..
There are pros and cons in wearing makeup, pros were discussed in these video, the cons are if guys start wear makeup there there would be a certain standards to keep for the men in the society too and the men who wouldn't want to wear makeup would be forced to wear makeup to look a certain way and beauty brands will take advantage of it, so it's a double edged sword
hey, that is what has been happening to women for centuries !! can you even imagine how many billions were made by capitalizing women's insecurities
that aside, I think makeup should be seen as an allegory for, men should not be ridiculed for wanting to look good. men should not be called names or insulted if they have any traditionally feminine interests.
@@raizel1155 I agree but make-up was not traditionally feminine, arguably, many men's in past used some form of make-up.

Why anyone wears makeup, learn to be confident in your own skin. Skincare is acceptable but catfishing isn't
Edit - Those who are trying to defend wearing makeup and using clothing as an analogy for it.
It's about choice.
tell this to your mother or sister
Wearing make up is to accentuate our natural beauty not to give us a whole new look. It is supposed to highlight our already present looks in a more well moulded way. Just because someone wears makeup doesn't mean they are uncomfortable with the way they look or feel inferior or less confident.
