Here's how I built a real working 007 Mini Scuba Tank Rebreather. By using two CO2 cartridges and some modified bike inflators, I was able to create a device that would give the user a few breaths of air underwater. This device is based on the James Bond movie Thunderball where 007 has a gadget just like this. In the movie James Bond gets 5 minutes of air but in reality the user only gets a few breaths. Please refrain from attempting this project.

While a full-functioning set of tools may be too much to ask, a more reasonable challenge that I'd be very interested in would be to see just how many gadgets you could fit as lightly and in as little space as possible - I don't care if it's all replicas, as long as the weight and size of the gadgets is roughly what could be achievable with sufficient funding.

The Bond sequence was famously cited here in the UK against a patent application for an underwater breathing device.
Nice build. I don't think anyone was expecting any more out of it than what you got. It is cool to see how the prop would have performed if it was real. The navy actually contacted the producers and asked if it actually worked and how long you could breathe with it. They were told it was a non-functional prop. The scooters were real though and very fast.

One danger a a lot of DIY scuba stuff forgets is that the oil from pumps (for example, the kind you'd find in a bike pump) is super bad for your lungs. When I went to grad school for marine ecology, I read a case study of divers in the Caribbean that used really sketchy rigs based around air compressors. If something else didn't kill them first--and this was super dangerous so big if--they would develop an emphysema-like disease.
Yes, it's grease that they put in bike pumps. It's just to act as a cheap sealant instead of getting a pinpoint seal on the device. But hopefully he washed those canisters out good.
I like how no one says anything about this guy being able to hold his breath for 2 and a half minutes unassisted
My personal is 2.20 but it was like 20 years ago. And I thought it was so great....

In the early 2000s I saw a TV program on a marine survival suit for helicopter pilots that had a plastic bag with a mouth-tube you could breathe in and out from (after taking a big breath before you hit the water). It worked because we don't extract all the oxygen from the air we breathe, so our exhalations still contain a lot. It extended people's ability to hold their breath by twice.

Lots of people must be “scuba diving” at my local park and pretty much any main road in England 👀
As a childhood diver I had the idea we need 30 litres free air per minute at 10 meters depth (~30feet); there we have 2 Bars of pressure that compresses the air to half volume = 15 L /minute times 5 minutes gives 150 liters free air to compress into a tube. If you compress it to 300 Bar, you will need one tube of 0.5 litre or 2 tubes of 0.25 litres of compressed air for five minutes of shallow breathing. Do not forget you need a vessel capable to withstand 450 Bar at the normal security threshold for 300 Bar - which makes a very thick-walled tube, if it explodes it will have the same destructive effect as a military grenade. Not to take lightly!

@@in7minutesorless Not that exactly but ya kind of that thing only, if you'd zoom out the gecko skin or gecko tapes, you'd be able to see tiny microscopic hooks. The suit should be having tiny microscopic suction cups instead of hooks for creating vacuum in large area for sticking to any surface (smooth polish surface too) and besides it will not stick to any dirt and will feel soft to touch or if we want to clean it with a cloth it can be easily done, hence will remain clean and if we compare to microscopic hooks, some particles of walls may get hooked with the layer on suit and if we try to clean, the strands of the clothes will get hooked and will become difficult for cleaning and can give spiky or prick feeling and may hurt if we touch.

heres something to keep in mind. you could effectively dramatically increase your ability to last under water with this method. make a small belt with maybe 10 extra cartridges on it. the only thing thing is it might be hard to not accidentally get water between the air valve and etc
Or drop them lol
Idea: post an uncensored version of the last clip

@@julianr8544 fr
Would be a very good device to have as a professional diver or swimmer in an emergency or for training cardio. I love it
This could actually be useful as an emergency back up for scuba divers or for any other type of work or hobby involving water. Its pretty small so you could carry this thing in your pocket or have it on a belt clip, you could even carry more than one if need be and if you could find a way of sealing the cartridges after filling them you could just carry multiple cartridges on you and swap them out while underwater as needed. I could definitely see something like this becoming part of an emergency kit for divers and could be a backup or a backup to a backup for if you were to run out of air this could provide you with a few breaths to be able to make it to the surface with. And so long as your not panicking, you could hold each breath and make 4-5 breaths from each cartridge last longer, if you could hold your breath for 30-60 seconds each breath then 4-5 breaths could provide you with up to 2-5 minutes of emergency air from each cartridge. That would be PLENTY of enough time for someone a few dozen feet under water to make it to the surface, ESPECIALLY if your using one of those emergency surfing devices that fill with air to help you surface faster. But i think that something like this could be even more useful if instead of using cartridges made from aluminum like the Co2 cartridges, using ones made from something stronger like Titanium and be able to withstand higher pressures would be better. Cartridges made from Titanium would be able to pumped up to MUCH higher pressures and allow you to have 30 or maybe even 40 breaths if you use the large 70gram ones. And since they're so small, making them out of Titanium wouldn't really make that big of a difference in their weight.
There's the spare air he mentions in the video
I mean we already carry pony tanks for that with a regulator that can get you 15 minutes or so. Its really not that useful until it can do teh same
If you hold your breath while surfacing your lungs can explode from the air expanding in them.
@Morgan Harris that only applies to air you breathe while it's compressed. Any air you breathe at atmosphere will not do that. We only ever worry about that if we are more than 60 feet underwater and you only have to worry about that for emergency ascents. Nobody is holding their breath on a slow ascent the air would be forced from your lungs as it slowly expands. This isn't divng 5 ATM down and trying to return to the surface with that compressed air in your lungs
JLaser briefly explained that gas compresses under depth. He was also diving quite shallow (10ft or about 3m, less than 1 additional atmosphere of pressure), and getting just a couple extra breathes. Atmospheric pressure increases in value every 10m. A recreational scuba divers typical range is 30m, which triples the atmospheric pressure. I can infer that gas in this device wouldn't provide a full breath for a diver at depth, and this wouldn't be suitable as a bailout.
A real worls use for this if you refined it, Keeping in the glove compartment of a car for if it goes under. As a one shot thing its cheaper than the full rebreather gear and will get you out if you follow the MythBusters drill
Mate, you say this has never been done before, but ive personally done it tonnes of times but with a whipped cream dispensor and n02 and above water

I thought the idea behind the rebreather gadget, was to act as an artificial Gill, that lets you breathe the air thats in the water and let's you stay under as long as you want/need.
Yeah
Water has led o2 than air it’s impossible you would need to pass gallons per second to have normal breathing rate. You would also still need to carry nitrogen and a co2 scrubber and now you have a rebreather
11:11 love the mw2 intervention quick scope animation.
Ever since I was a child I wanted this concept to be real. I love the water and chilling at the bottom of the pool with one of those things always seemed like so much fun!
Idea: an airsoft gun with a barrel that has a relatively wide range of motion. It has a camera on it and some code that can track people and move the barrel so that it always hits them, also taking into acct the direction the gun itself is facing, like how much it is angled up or left or right of the target. My idea is kinda like the ultimate from solider 76 from overwatch
Idk the name but someone made a dartboard that tracks your hand movement and moves to help you get a bullseye. Use that tracking to make a tracker. Then there is a gun that has a barrel that moves 180 degrees. Hook it up and BAM, you got yourself a tracking airsoft gun.
Amiwrong Helpme that’s Mark Rober and it doesn’t track your hand just the dart.
@@alejandroalvarez-barreiro9560 you could still use that system for a tracking gun. But he already built one that tracks faces. It's his shoulder mounted gun.
Already made smart point optical sights
There is a hunting sight that does alot more then just track it makes being a sniper a no math job they have also made a weapon that turns around corners so add the 2 together and you have what you want.
So this would be useful for stuntmen etc when they are underwater in vehicles and such. They often have to give a hand signal and have a diver come to assist. This could be a safety tool they could have as a last chance extra breath.
This was also in Star Wars episode I. Technically you're carrying technology from a galaxy far, far away

I thought this was the coolest thing when I first saw it. The Bond movies had some of the most amazing underwater scenes.
One more thing, do not use a normal pump, that is not breathable air, the oils in the pump, and the levels of nitrogen are usually precise in diving air, so please use diving air shops...
This is the comment I was looking for! Thought it wasnt the best for you.

Fun fact, I recently saw a video about a real spec ops scuba diver reviewing (among others) this James Bond film, and said it was totally impossible, that such device could have worked....and yet, you showed again, that nothing is impossible 😎
Assuming that the MI6 special agents must have above average physical condition, 007 could indeed survive if this scene was real
he gave himself 2 extra breaths. its not working as it did in the movie.
I think it's likely James Bond was trained for underwater combat and extended breath holding. The mini oxygen supply gadget wouldn't have been built and given to James without a reason. The film shows how it gives the agent more mobility for combat. Then just go back for the scuba tank after the enemies are dealt with.

There is actually a natural effect that does the same thing as laughing gas, or at least something similar.
