This rlly puts into perspective WHY so many if not most scouts die. Bc of the amount of skill is needed to not only just move with the gear, but also be able to think fast enough in the heat of battle with tons of titans including incredibly fast ones

Well... it's a manga/anime, and not real life.. Just because someone needs to train for however ridiculous amounts of time in an anime doesn't mean you would IRL. It's literally just a guy making stuff up for his imaginary world.
@@RedTail1-1 If you consider the applications of the Gear in the Manga, and consider how long it takes to learn a person to fly an aircraft, I feel as if months to years is a very reasonable time frame. Learning not to collide with the first wall by grappling directly into it. Learning how to slow down a descent with fine precision. The aiming mechanics alone would take months at the minimum for the average person to master - think about a rifle? Think about the velocities and aiming assistance and then consider the gear has no sighting, it's pure intuition. Bullshit manga physics, sure, but the training period is very reasonable.
Incredible. You're 90% there. Of all the craziest anime machines this is one I thought was purely fantasy. The only thing missing is the ability to fire continuously. Awesome.
I think the reason they use two independent motors in the anime is so they can use the two sides in a more precise way. You're currently using the ODM gear completely in tandem, firing both sides at the same time toward the same target. In the show, they can fire the sides out of tandem. They can hit one object with one side and something else with the other. To tie it back to Spiderman, think of how Spidey swings along the streets of New York by alternating between his left and right web-shooters. I reckon if you managed to attach the anchor points to two different surfaces, desynced motors would allow you to reel out on one point and slide toward the other- like sliding back and forth along a tightrope. Combined with another commenter's idea of sliders on the controllers to adjust the angle of the barrels (so you don't have to lean back to fire the lines up), and I think you've got yourself a whole new video's worth of content. One last thing: Is there a reason you haven't rifled the barrels or put fins on the anchors? Either would help the anchors fly straight, possibly negating the need for multiple anchors on each side.
Watching J learn how to use the ODM after constantly failing but never giving up felt like I was watching a real life anime character. This is probably my favorite JLaser video ever. You really might be the best engineering channel on UA-cam
And (technological limitations aside) this shows how much training you need to operate ODM effectively. Now the 3 years cadets went trough make even more sense. Another kudos to the show!
@@ЯрославФилоненко-ы6ю Really puts it into perspective how difficult it actually is, like how in the anime if my memory serves correct, their first real test after lots of training was simply balancing in the air
Well, less learning how to use it and more engineering to eliminate the problems he had, which imo is more impressive. It is harder but allows for more people to use it.
Makes me wonder what the design process the creators went through to come up with it. It seems a lot more feasible than just wishing it into existence.
@@damionkeeling3103 I mean it's the base thought process that makes it almost real, The Harness, The hook and reel system, and not to mention the gas system that also helps propel you and course correct you. The swords have 2 triggers each, now where it's fantasy is that these triggers do everything they shoot the thunder spears, shoot the hookshot and also retract it and control the gas I would imagine the index fingers control the gas left and right handle pushing the gas that way, pulling both gives you forward thrust then your middle finger controls the hookshots and after being fired these also retract somehow. The video is just an amazing proof of concept, if the technology is there and the training is done this could very well be a real invention one day
@@Nocturnal9720 Iirc, the 'guard' on the hilt fires the hookshot (you press the metal guard), the triggers reel the hookshot in and control the gas. The blade is ejected from the hilt by a control at the back of the hilt. There's different hilts for thunder spears vs. for swords, that's why they wear the holsters in S4- they swap hilts. I think.
Just imagine having a team of professional mechanical engineers and big company with enormous budget/sponsors etc besides them plus few years of mastering this device. You could really witness an AOT experience. Props to you all guys, well done!
Even if they could make it so that you can detach the anchor points mid flight, it'd still be impossibly difficult to use in motion and you'd definitely get killed long before mastering it.
Your work is fantastic but i'm going to point some things out which could have made it more anime-like : • In the anime the thing that shoots the harpoon can be aimed up and down and the aiming mechanism is in the handles which is just a slider , that is the reason characters don't seem to be bending backwards even though they clearly aim upwards (you can see this if you pay attention). • odm gear also has a nozzle which releases gas from the back which they use for more speed but i don't think you need that its already fast enough. • their blades are bigger. Except that i think its perfect, i love your work. You are probably thinking nobody needed this essay...
Truly impressing as always. Not some half assed gimmick. You legitimately achieved a prototype of what could become real ODM gear. It is of course missing the omnidirectional aspect to it. But it's amazing you got THIS far. I can't believe someone actually tried and succeeded to this extent. You're amazing man. I hope someone buys that model off you and they make a refined model
I love how this man goes through the engineering process where he shows all of the fails too. Its not just a one and done, and I love that we can see what he does to solve it when it goes wrong
I really want to emphasize the fact that when he faced a problem of it not working he looked to the show and found a solution it just showed how incredible the writing in the show is
@nebula7407 you definitely have to give a hand to the author for making something that actually logically makes sense and can work if given enough time and brainpower in the real world. Not a lot of fantasy media can or will do that with their mechanics
This honestly gives me even more appreciation for Attack on Titan. Like I never saw the point of having the full body harness but this shows exactly what would happen without that, ie the equipment just sliding off the body. Kinda nuts that Isayama put enough thought into designing the odm gear that it addressed stuff like this.
@@rickyricardo9710 Well you can see the thought process in the middle parts with all the pictures of how the ODM gear is made and how it works with small graphs. Those I think are just small pictures compared to his notebooks that might have been full of how to build ODM in his setting.
right at first i was like ok makes sense why now i can understand why in more depth like if you cant balance yourself youre going sideways and cant even move properly that will only get you killed in a fight
@@syncticnot as well as just using regular guns like marley and the rest. Against humans, guns are are better. Against titans, blades / rockets (javelins) are better.
This kinda makes me appreciate AoT even more. The whole mechanism is absolutely viable and you even accidentally pulled one of those cool spins they do in the show. The fantasy part of that seems to be the humans themselves who have to move with that speed and force while also perfectly managing the mechanisms and handling balance.
That's why they spent months training and still not great, takes years to master if you live that long. Humans have shown amazing feats of speed, like cutting a bb fired from a gun with a sword from draw. Quick draw of fire arms, speed reloading, quick draw, old staff drills even are all crazy feats when trained. This is viable, probably not for war but could definitely be used my firefighter or emt
No, physics says it's impossible. What we have on a video is the home made mechanical grappling hook with looks and aesthetics of ODM gear. The actual ODM gear called that way because it's OMNI directional. It's all merely a fantasy and it's impossible to make it work in real life. But the concept was just simple enough to lower our suspension of disbelief to make it work in story. Things that ODM gear does in the show, is absolutely impossible to replicate in real life. At least not on a planet with Earth like gravitation. That without even mentioning how complex this mechanism should be to not stuck in any surface and be easily removable from any surface.
Except there is no way to detatch ropes, so whole device is one use. Or you have to spend a lot of time and effort extracting the hooks/nails to be able to reuse them
it would be less impressive in real life compared to an anime (thats obvious) but that could really be magnificent to watch and really crazy, in 2040 i would gladly buy one 😂, now lets make Jojo stands real @@hellomark1

He's just that awesome though he probably could have saved some time if he had just ordered some blades for Mimi katana... but not that I think about it maybe not
REALLY GOOD INVENTION MAN! I do want to say that in the show they don’t actually use motors for the odm gear. It’s compressed gas in the tubes that powers the firing and a powerful spring inside the coil handles the recoiling of the string. The point of odm is not to accelerate by pulling in ur body weight with the string, it is to swing off the strings by using the gas
As a huge AOT fan this was almost seamless, you did it justice. The equipment looked great, it was legit, and even shows the skill involved, the attacks + whats possible with a weapon like that. Imagine if you could make them in mass production with more help, they are certainly a realistic idea to entertain, and you brought it to life. You considered all the right things, i had a smile on my face the whole time, I want one now
For the foot harness, you could use a seatbelt locking system and have it mounted at the knee. That way, the torque should make it lock up while also letting you have the full range of motion in walking

A project that's actually dangerous, and you managed to operate it all and demonstrate it without significant injuries is something. Still it's also quite entertaining when it all worked out. Congrats on that!
I always thought the tech in the show was impossible, but for it to be so incredibly close to the real life engineering, it's just incredible. Incredible work.
They essentially use compress gas, hooks, and acrobatics to move the only thing I see going wrong is passing out or breaking your back on this and g force and whiplash from sudden change in direction
I'm not saying the show is realistic But the Anime and Manga has trivia's in certain interludes that explian on how thier technology works. The author really did his homework. It's anime, it's acceptable to indulge in spectacle without any physics, but the author went above and beyond for this

This is inpressive. What’s more impressive is how the design in the show/manga takes into account all of these design obstacles and considerations for the ODM to actually work. 😮 great concept and well-thought design!
In the anime they had those "in-between-ad" info screens where they dump extra information about random stuff like weapons and city layouts. I remember one of those had the full design schematic for the ODM gear. The attention to detail was insane.

7:36 If you look at the design for the ODM in the manga, it shows that they extend their leg as they're pulling for this exact reason! also, if you look at their ODM gear, you'll also notice they also have the anchor point forward at their center of mass. Gotta love the author's details
I would never believe in my entire life that someone would be able to build, engineer, and utilize the ODM gear in real life. You, sir, have made history! And you also earned a subscriber!
Little tip. The characters in the show have full body harnesses that run under the soles of their feet as well. So they can attempt to stand if necessary.
the problem isnt that he doesn't put it under the soles, he didnt do it cuz "when his leg bends it does nothing". but even in the example he shown, it shows how it wraps around the knee so it follows the way the leg bends. he cheaped out. he made a functional prototype tho ill give him that. 4/10
You’ve made some dope stuff but this is 100% my favorite and was WAYYYYY more successful than I thought it would be! Amazing work, amazing dedication, just wow.
The reason why it worked out is cause theres more room when making web shooters you need to make it compact and same with iron man but odm gear has quite a lot of room compared to other things like in the show it’s pretty bulky I still don’t get how in the anime they made it though cause it’s pretty complex with older equipment because attack on Titan was set in world war 2 era so yeh
I wasn’t comparing it to the spider man web shooter, I was comparing it to what I expected the feasibility of the project to be based on how hard it is to actually use any sort of grappling hook, nevermind aiming, not just being lifted but being pulled through the air and doing so accurately and not too fast or slow, etc. I know a lot about engineering and fantasy inspired projects, and this was still far more feasible and well executed than I was expecting.
Honestly you would kind of have to try to make it not work. It was very well done in the anime to begin with, but could obviously be done better in real life as we just saw.
John 3:16 King James Version 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Imma just nerd out here and explain how the gear works (im gonna use some of the wiki and on-screen references for the gear and some personal thoughts as well): So firstly you have 4 parts - The propellant on the back, the wire mounts that also controls the wire's retraction, the launchers on the hip sides, and the triggers. - The wire mounts connected to the propellant are on the back. The way the wire mount works is that the inside structure resembles that of a retractable wire reel (you can search it up) except it doesnt automatically pulls back the wire when released (thats what i think, might be wrong). When you push a mechanism on the trigger, it opens a valve on the bridge connecting the propellant and the mount that then expels a certain compressed gas, causing the wire reel mechanism to spin and retract the wire. The wires themselves are connected to the launcher via a series of meticulously designed joints with bearings so when the user moves and do some ODM stuff in the air, the wires are still able to pull them without much tension (kind of like how multiple pulleys work) and without the wires getting stuck on an awkward position. -The propellant device on the back is the center for the gear, hence why its the most cared for part of the ODM gear, and why the Beast Titan took it (also connected to the wire mounts so it could be considered one part). Its connected to the gas cartridges located on top the blade box, and is connected by 2 separate small tubes under the propellant device. The inside is a bit hard to figure out, but in short, the inside of the propellant acts like a secondary compressor, iirc it has 2 separate inner walls that control whether the gas expelled will push you right, left, or center. I said its like a secondary compressor because the inner walls within the propellant are in a circular pattern that gradually gets thinner and thinner (the gas pathway i mean) until it reaches the exit point where there is a tube thingy that expels the gas in a concentrated manner. Said thingy can also move about less than a half circle (dont know the exact degree) and i think it uses a mechanism that allows the gas to escape only that part without any spillage from the obviously open slot where it moves. Its also worth mentioning that the gas release mechanism is also handled by the trigger, and if you push both hand triggers at the same time, it will automatically centers the gas expulsion and give the user a boost (More on that below). - The launchers are located on both side of the hips and are connected to the user's body via the same joint bearings as the wirings, therefore allowing the user to create 3d movements without damaging or tensioning the wires and can still shoot to other directions instead of just the front. Theres not much logic to this as far as i know because there are multiple clips in the anime and ova's that show the launchers somewhat being able to lock on in a specific direction with just the hip movement, i think thats why the joint bearings are there. And there are multiple cases where the launchers suddenly shoot the hooks backwards whilst the user is facing forward, sometimes even to the side, as seen in Levi's background story in an OVA. Another weird thing about the launchers is that they have enough power to shoot the hooks on great speeds and great distances, so a spring launch mechanism isnt possible on that. There isnt also any tubes that connect the wire to the propellant part, so its hard to justify that. But we know that it uses gas to shoot the wires, since there are clips showing smoke or excess gas escaping the launcher barrel after the hooks are fired. It could be a hidden tube (possible) that is connected from the propellant to the launchers, that are then connected via a universal joint or something, and that the trigger mechanism also handles that via a valve. So far it is the second most difficult part to theorize the mechanism for the reasons i said. - The trigger mechanism is the handles basically, where the blades also attach. The interesting part about this is that, in the anime and the wiki for the ODM gear, each trigger function is shown differently. On Levi's back story, theres a clip were he pushed somethings on the side of the handles, then pressed the big bicycle brake trigger one, and that made the launchers face his sides and fire the wires. Then you have a clip from the opening of AOT S1 where the scout riding the horse pushed the upper trigger (the 2 encased trigger parts) and pulled back the hammer thingy on the back of the handles before firing the hooks. So in short, its the one that can give a really bad headache if you try to understand it. Well in my case, i tried to think of a simple function to make it easy as possible.. First the big bicycle brake trigger. I thought of it so that trigger is the Gas trigger, for the extra boost when in mid air. If you press the left one, it will give you a boost to fling you towards the right, same thing with the right trigger, it will fling you to the left side, press both it will fling you straight. Then the upper trigger where your index finger is, i thought of it as the shooting trigger, press it then the wires shoot. The lower trigger where the middle finger is, is the retraction trigger. Press one, it will retract one side of the wires, press both then it will retract both. For the hammer thingy on the back, i think it would be a good trigger to release the blades, since the users of the gear have to replace the broken blades ever so often. Its also kind of good to place it away from the other triggers and near the blade section so you wont mis click it mid flight (Imagine wanting to shoot the hook but instead you released your blades and you crashed into a tree or house). The 2 sliding thingies, i thought of them to be how to control the tightness or looseness of the joint bearings, so you can do more ODM stuff like shooting it 90 degrees from your side and such. OTHER THINGS!!: - For the gas itself, the anime mentioned using gas from ice burst stones that "explodes" when in contact with air. So its like a primitive version of a combustive gas or something, idk they made the gear, blades, and wires in weird stuff too like iron bamboo and all that stuff. Idk the real world equivalent of that gas, but what i had in mind was just some hydrogen or helium, the ones that makes balloons go weeeeeee in the sky. - The hooks themselves... yes in short they are impossible (i think). The hooks are like your typical "closed then becoming open mid air" type of hook. The idea is that the hooks, before leaving the launcher barrels, are closed, like a folded umbrella, but when released, they spin creating enough drag to open them up (may also explains the on point trajectory and almost straight flight path of the hooks) , allowing them to stick into trees, titan skin, and buildings. Then by some magic, the ODM gear user can retract the hook and wires on will even without reeling it back for it to naturally loosen and escape whatever its hooked on. Then before going back inside the barrel, the hook is already closed again. So in short, i got nothing on that :| - The most important thing as well for the gear and the user is the harness. It basically pulls all the user's wait and center it the the waist where our center of gravity is. Hence why the harness also is wore underneath the feet. It could also affect the weight distribution so that the gear isnt that much stressed and tensioned I think thats it... Sorry for ranting about this, i basically loved the gear to the point that i made a "to be made" blueprint of it years back. Also sorry for the grammar errors if there's any, English is not my first language... And if some say that im just saying stuff and geeking about it, i cant really blame you since thats what i also had in mind making this, but its not that bad to say what i had in mind right?? Especially if its giving out some infos if ever needed :))
Pretty good but I'd like to add 2 things, first of all the odm gear doesn't just push gas out of the nozzle, it's mentioned that it's pushed into a fan that generates propulsion, probably what the metal circle in the back of the odm gear is, and another detail I don't think you mentioned was that the directions of the hooks can be controlled by pointing the handles somehow, that's how they go up while facing forwards, and I think the canon controls for the handles is top trigger for hooks, bottom for gas and back hammer button to release blades, I'm not exactly sure which way around the triggers are tho
People tend to laugh at the ODMs like, "Oh, that's wacky nonsense, that can't work" Not only have you proved that it *can* work, but you learning how to actually use it puts so much of the training from the show in perspective. I can see this taking three years to master, I can see a lot of washouts, I can even see some of the thought process behind the early prototypes in Before the Fall. Honestly, I just have one question: IS YOUR HEART ON YOUR RIGHT SIDE!?
I remember when AOT first came out 10 years ago and people were already making blueprints or designs to make ODM gear in real life but none of them ever really worked out, it's crazy to think that now we legitimately have a working prototype of a proper ODM gear! It's crazy to think what could happen in another 10 years time, maybe we might see a working 1:1 replica of the ODM gear seen in the anime
Honestly its not really a matter of "can it be done" but "can the right person for the job step up and do it". This dude was clearly the right person for the job whereas others weren't lol

It might seem a bit simple in comparison to some of your past builds, but I'd like to see a secret door like the entrance to Diagon Alley from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Like where you tap the bricks in a certain pattern and then the bricks move out of your way to reveal the opening.
This is really great and miracle project. As japanese and a fan of Attack on Titan, I want to give thanks from heart. (I would want you to excuse me If my english is wrong)
With some tweaking to make it a bit more reliable, I could totally see this being a tool used by rescuers and military personnel to quickly scale buildings! That's so sick!
the concept itself is impractical without scifi physics, reliability is also dubious. again scifi physics. if the blades easily end titans by extreme maneuver, its hard to say something less exciting, but more effective, and most likely projectile would work far better. in any reality odm gear although "technically" possible, wouldnt be developed, as it presents more problems then solutions, and its ineffective comparatively. like watching jurassic park wondering why they didnt just use penatrating rounds and heavy weaponary from the air. they might have thick skin in the movie, but it aint tougher than steel scientifically, and theoretically it shouldnt be resistant to normal rounds to that extent, much less penatrating rounds. far less exciting for entertainment purposes tho.
I think the ODM gear works because it's connected to the hip but harnessed to all the body therefore it can be aimed with the help of the movement of the hips, the legs, and probably the arms as well. Also it does not work solely through pulling, there's gas that acts as a propellant to help them "fly" and gain momentum. In the anime, there are times that the gas alone shows that it can propel someone without the ropes.
It was challenging enough for them to get the winches to turn fast enough to pull them bodily through the air. I don't even want to think about the amount of gas pressure necessary to propel a human being, even one that already has momentum. Plus the tanks would add extra weight. It would probably end up being almost as big of a problem to solve as they spent just getting the grapples to work.
I think the most impressive part of this video is even after expertly making accurate, functional ODM gear, you managed to learn it to the point where you can jump up through barn windows and even slay mighty inflatable titans. If you put two years into training with YOUR ODM gear, even considering our worlds physics, I believe you could do some insane stuff. I just think its cool that you made a fantasy anime strat that in other words be impossible, possible. This is the coolest thing Ive seen in a long time, coming from an AOT fan.
To improve the ODM gear, you should put a system to lock your rope unless you press a button to release it so that you can keep your height instead of restarting from the ground. As for a new idea, I would love to see you team up with the hacksmith and make a completely functional iron man suit, with most of the weapons, and their version of Jarvis as it’s operating system. With their funding, facilities, and workers, and your help, it could be all of yours’ greatest invention. Even if the flight doesn’t work, the rest would be amazing.
Incredible for a first prototype! Seriously, this works better than I ever imagined ODM gear could work in real life. And the great part is I can tell there’s still room to improve the design-for example, integrating the firing/reeling controls into the sword handles like they do in the show. 10/10 work lads.
And now imagine if you got like the best engineers of humanity instead of just one guy making a youtube video. Remember people invented cars, rockets, and nukes. Imagine if people really spent their whole lives trying to invent this and solve these things. It could 100% be plausible in a world where we had to go up against Titans our whole lives. Everyone would be trying to perfect it, and you’d have soldiers training ever since they were kids to use it to its fullest potential. I know it’s just an anime, but I think we COULD get it to work just as well.
They use the hand held things to shoot the rope by the way Theres these buttons were you hold it with your pinky and you ring finger you push down on it and thats what shoots the rope out its a much more efficient way to grapple its also easier
Dude, you are literally so inspiring. You’re making fiction come to life, and it excites me so much! I’m a huge nerd, so seeing somebody use ODM gear and slice open an inflatable titan like a badass is mindblowing. Don’t ever stop dude! You are the future of engineering🙌🏽
The tech of things like small motors have come such a long way, but no one would notice unless you're actively doing things with them. Like this, or drones, even just battery powered tools like drills are so much more powerful for so much cheaper and lighter than their predecessors
In the show, it isn’t just about the wire being reeled in, but also the gas that’s shot out the back for extra propulsion Also in the show the harness goes around the torso and not just the feet - would love to see you do another video on this to make it even more incredible!
Even for an animated show, they had a long and tedious training for these. And considering your version of it, it is safe to say they kinda nailed it well in the show
This is actually so awesome! Just a note, their harnesses cover the entire body, from shoulders to the feet, and connect to their belts. Also, their scabbards have gas tanks mounted above them that connect to a sort propulsion mechanism that uses it to propel the user forward. I think it'd be cool if a potential 2nd version of this integrated that too.
It kinda shows how realistic ODM gear actually is. if you could do it yourself to this degree, imagine if you had massive teams of people developing, improving, and manufacturing this stuff; I'm sure ODM gear would be truly viable in the world of AOT, and could definitely exist in our world if we really wanted it to.
I could see IRL gear used for entertainment purposes like having a field full of stuff to grapple to but when it comes to everyday life it would be a little too dangerous and impractical mostly because of the damage it would do stuff it hooks to
@@beastmode9988when your city is being attacked by giant naked monsters or terrorists, I don't think the government is going to care about a little bit of cosmetic damage if it means special forces getting on scene sooner.

Not only is it impressive that you managed to design and produce all the gear so accurately, but also how the ODM gear was so well designed for the manga/anime that it can get mimicked in real life. A lot of character designs are done just for looks/aesthetics and unrealistic, but not in Attack on Titan. Isayama and all the animation teams really did their research to making the outfits, props, movements as realistic as possible. And as well as you!! Nice job to building this ODM gear dude!! It would be more practical for first responders, although considering the conditions it would need to be effective and the amount of training and funding needed, I don't think something like this would ever be used.
This is simply THE BEST work I have ever seen. Hands down full respect. I cannot imagine the amount of time and effort put into this. True survey scouts. Shinzouwo sasageyo.
i think the one thing I've never thought about that would cause the potentially the biggest issue, which is when actually killing a titan and the blood gets all over them. it never gets in the reel or any of the mechanical bits. (from what i recall)
This is surprisingly realistic compared to the show. Usually when people make them kind of projects you get some crappy mimics but this is the real deal.
Back in Highschool me and my friends planned to do this too. We dreamt flying over the school like scout regimen. That was wild. Seeing Jake did this was crazy. Cant believe that the ODM functionality was so real. You did a very good job jake!
You know what would be fun? A real life park (with appropriate safety measures) where you use manufactured ODM to slay "titans" (hit some arbitrary targets). Something like a "ropes course park" (or whatever they're called) but with some objects to hook yourself to on sides.
Yeah. I think one of the most important things he needs to tackle next is how he's going to have the hooks quickly dismount from the wall, retract, and be able to re-engage them again. That would again take brilliant planning and doing, but I believe he can achieve anything at this point
@@Drewski777I have ideas but it would take a lot of possible fabrication. Like you could have a barb in the tip that you can retract to let it loose. Honestly this build has a lot of potential
@@Blackplague17 Maybe something like a remote controlled mechanism with the spike, where after hitting a surface releasing the trigger will cause the spike to retract back and hopefully pull itself loose, then it can be reeled back in.
@@100organicfreshmemes5 Name of the game there is reliability, any sort of electronic or non-mechanical control is going to be prone to failure. In the video J mentioned this ODM gear had a reliability issue which is likely due to a LOT of this design relying on non-mechanical functions. I think if you made the firing blocks semi-rotatable, like in the show, it could solve a few issues with aiming and obviously a full body harness opposed to a waist harness would make it much easier to shift your weight.
With some iterations and training this can work exactly like in the show. Super cool engineering and ideas, honestly one of the dopest looking and most practical build on this channel.
guys that aren't superhuman when landing high like Jean usually rolled up after they hit the ground kinda like stuntman doing high jumps from a building to lessen the impact on the knees or ankles, one i notice as well when Levi going full speed on that bar, while he uses the 1st hook to repel forward, the other one is hook up to the side to lessen the impact.
This is so cool! I never thought of how they could swap or detach the rope portion, but a lot of detail went into the design for practical reasons and it was shown. I think the next logical step now would be...the thunder spears.
Before seeing this video I was wondering how AOT (attack on titan) made ODM gear ( Omni Directional Maneuver Gear) by the year 840 but we didn’t make it until 2023
That flying cut on the titan was one of the coolest real-life stunts I have ever seen. Your job looks like so much fun but like most jobs it is a whole ton of manual effort to get to that one cool moment for less than a minute of payoff but what a payoff!

The second I saw the web shooter I couldn't help but get one. I love everything you have made you are an incredible individual, keep up the amazing work. 👍🏻
odm gear in the show has a jet propulsion system and the fact you were able to get yours working somewhat without it is incredible. just imagine if you had thrusters
the only thing missing is the gas that pushes you forward and can change directions if thats added then its perfect and maybe if there was a way to retrack the hooks
I think the most insane part of this to me is that you literally addressed the same fundamental question the Mythbusters failed on 16 years ago, but succeeded where they failed(at the time). As soon as I saw how you were approaching this, it reminded me of one of their early superhero episodes where they attempted Batman's grappling hook. Very similar approach too, using an explosive charge to embed the anchor into the substrate & a high-powered winch to reel you in. At the time though, they basically came to the conclusion that they couldn't reliably get the anchor to stick (granted, they were trying directly into concrete) + a wearable-sized winch wouldn't have the power to reel you in. It's insane that in 16 years we're at the point where this can be reasonably pulled off, and with development/iteration, probably made even more functional. This was amazing.
In time this could be part of a specific emergency rescue gear fire fighters or police...or XGames style events which would further push the tech and smooth out safety and reliability issues while expanding the range of surfaces this system can be used on. This really feels like there's some kind of actual merit here to continue the research. I'm really impressed already.
mythbusters isn't able to put as much time and resources into making it work. and they don't have the motivation to make it work. They can shoot the footage call it busted and upload it. Jlaser can only upload if it succeeds. You can tell from the cut together footage in this video that it never really worked how they wanted. The shot's of him swinging from the roof are never shown being deployed from the waist.
The straps in the show were not just on the legs. They covered the entire body. They're meant to distribute the weight on your entire body (shoulder to feet), and both the top and bottom straps connect at the belt. I don't know if it'd have made any difference, but would've been interested to know.
It's likely necessary as well: During a scene in season one we see some garrison soldiers distracting titans, while the Survey Corps goes on an expedition. Horses of the corps can maintain a speed of 35 km/h meaning that these soldiers already moved faster. And that's the average soldier someone like Mikasa is on a whole other level (there was a video somewhere which analyzed a scene in which, in order for the scene to work, she would have to withstand g-forces similar to that of a fighter pilot under extreme maneuvers).
It's a fictional show that has legitimate science and physics behind the actions taken in the show. Very little isn't considered. There's graphs and diagrams of the gear, how it's made, etc. As you can clearly see in this video, and amateur engineer made ODM gear in his garage. There's obviously some merit to this idea.
@@shellshockedbros4458 While I do agree with your comment I was mostly thinking about this paragraph ''there was a video somewhere which analyzed a scene in which, in order for the scene to work, she would have to withstand g-forces similar to that of a fighter pilot under extreme maneuvers''
@@ukko8457 I had the full harness as cosplay and if worn correctly, the harness does actually work to control your balance. Lifting your left foot ahead of you would pull your right shoulder back for example. So in theory, if you were dangling from your center of gravity, you could shift your position mid-air with little effort.
Another important thing is that the reason why this gear is even possible in the manga is because of a rare fuel that only exists in that specific island in attack on titan, which is super efficient and can make odm gear possible. So props to you for making it work without that fictional fuel🙂
Can someone share this with the mangaka of Shingeki no Kyojin? I find it even more amazing that the mangaka actually drew the mechanical system rather accurately.

From all the ODM build videos I've seen so far, your ODM gear is the closest to the real thing and from afar compared to the other videos. If we could make the gas ejection thing that maintains you in mid air while the hooks are reeled, imagine just using the gas thing alone to jump higher or run faster, I can't wait to see that if you are going to make it ! Awesome video !
It's not that he can't do it. Our boring real world physics won't permit such a thing. You don't have where to store so much gas without adding too much weight and volume. Unless you replace that with some jets maybe but then it would not look or feel like ODM and even that way may not work because of the extra weight.
@@raresandrei7205Also, pushing on your back with enough force to move a person non stop would be pretty painful, especially if you tried to reach the speeds they do in the show.
Unfortunately it's kinda impossible to replicate the gas propellant system. The thing about the anime is that the gas system it uses is an extremely ridiculously strong propellant that is quite a bountiful resource. The real world does not really have such a propellant, the only way it could be made would require a ridiculous amount of resources to propel yourself for a very short period of time. To add, the speed the gas in aot propels you is probably enough to knock you out cold from all the Gs. Everything else is probably plausible though, which is kinda cool.

Preach it man

Well, less learning how to use it and more engineering to eliminate the problems he had, which imo is more impressive. It is harder but allows for more people to use it.
There's a reason why the ODM has so much harness throughout the whole body, that's how they balance while being able to have the odm where it is.
To build off that: Their body is like the steering wheel, and slight shifts in position can change direction bc of the harnesses
tbh it makes me appreciate the detail and design in aot

Your work is fantastic but i'm going to point some things out which could have made it more anime-like :
• In the anime the thing that shoots the harpoon can be aimed up and down and the aiming mechanism is in the handles which is just a slider , that is the reason characters don't seem to be bending backwards even though they clearly aim upwards (you can see this if you pay attention).
• odm gear also has a nozzle which releases gas from the back which they use for more speed but i don't think you need that its already fast enough.
• their blades are bigger.

@@Gorartsybecause odm gear is slightly more realistic then magic spider web fluid that is strong and shoots from a tiny compartment
I know a lot about engineering and fantasy inspired projects, and this was still far more feasible and well executed than I was expecting.
ive never seen a grappling system work this well before. the fact that it can lift you that quickly at a 45 degree angle is insane.
Honestly you would kind of have to try to make it not work. It was very well done in the anime to begin with, but could obviously be done better in real life as we just saw.

Imma just nerd out here and explain how the gear works (im gonna use some of the wiki and on-screen references for the gear and some personal thoughts as well):
So firstly you have 4 parts - The propellant on the back, the wire mounts that also controls the wire's retraction, the launchers on the hip sides, and the triggers.
OTHER THINGS!!:
- For the gas itself, the anime mentioned using gas from ice burst stones that "explodes" when in contact with air.
So in short, i got nothing on that :|
- The most important thing as well for the gear and the user is the harness. It basically pulls all the user's wait and center it the the waist where our center of gravity is. Hence why the harness also is wore underneath the feet. It could also affect the weight distribution so that the gear isnt that much stressed and tensioned
I think thats it...
Pretty good but I'd like to add 2 things, first of all the odm gear doesn't just push gas out of the nozzle, it's mentioned that it's pushed into a fan that generates propulsion, probably what the metal circle in the back of the odm gear is, and another detail I don't think you mentioned was that the directions of the hooks can be controlled by pointing the handles somehow, that's how they go up while facing forwards, and I think the canon controls for the handles is top trigger for hooks, bottom for gas and back hammer button to release blades, I'm not exactly sure which way around the triggers are tho

the concept itself is impractical without scifi physics, reliability is also dubious. again scifi physics. if the blades easily end titans by extreme maneuver, its hard to say something less exciting, but more effective, and most likely projectile would work far better. in any reality odm gear although "technically" possible, wouldnt be developed, as it presents more problems then solutions, and its ineffective comparatively. like watching jurassic park wondering why they didnt just use penatrating rounds and heavy weaponary from the air. they might have thick skin in the movie, but it aint tougher than steel scientifically, and theoretically it shouldnt be resistant to normal rounds to that extent, much less penatrating rounds. far less exciting for entertainment purposes tho.

Yeah. I think one of the most important things he needs to tackle next is how he's going to have the hooks quickly dismount from the wall, retract, and be able to re-engage them again. That would again take brilliant planning and doing, but I believe he can achieve anything at this point

the only thing missing is the gas that pushes you forward and can change directions if thats added then its perfect and maybe if there was a way to retrack the hooks
Can someone share this with the mangaka of Shingeki no Kyojin?
I find it even more amazing that the mangaka actually drew the mechanical system rather accurately.
Yeah, this guy always detailed the things pretty well. Adding to the consistency of the show.
Isayama at work @@Ricardo__Milos
One speaking in english, only pretentious people refer to this series by its japanese name
@@christianweibrecht6555 No. People respecting the author. Attack on Titans doesn't make any sense considering the story. The english name is an insult to Isayama's work.
Attack on Titan was ok at first because nobody knew what was the real meaning of Shingeki no Kyoujin (just the author).
The japanese name itself is a huge part of the story.
@@christianweibrecht6555 you do realise the ORIGINAL work is in JAPANESE and lots of Asian works that have English titles are badly translated or even an utter mockery to the original?
I think this might be my favorite one. It just looked so cool when you flew across the room, and ran up Walls.
16:45 bro kicked that door “just like in the show”
Honestly, I would love to just see you iterate on this design and perfect it, see how much smaller, more accurate, and more functional you can make it. This is so impressive as it is though!
And the fall wouldn't be nice anyway
It's crazy how far your channel has come. 10/10 unmatched content bro.
