- Picking up where the hugely successful Cutting Edge film of the same title left off, Big Fat Gypsy Weddings painst a visually arresting portrait of the secretive, extravagant and surprising world of gypsies and travellers in Britain today. Each episode stands alone offering insight into attitudes toward gender roles, education and the non-gypsy or traveller community. I actually was a bridesmaid at a friends wedding, her husband is Ukranian Gypsies, I had the time of my life and mind you I'm a Spanish Jew growing up in Tennessee! Tons of dancing, tons of food, absolutely the best time all around.

Hate stings the soul it originates from. There is nothing more sad, nor ignorant, than hate and hateful words, than judgment, assumptions, and filling one's own mind with negative thoughts and hate.
My comment clearly stated that you can live in a caravan, you can 'travel' around and be perfectly normal, perfectly acceptable. If people want to live in a caravan then so be it... it's a choice and they want to do it- I have no problem with that. I have no problem with travelers who pay their way, earn an honest wage and abide by the law. Fighting is wrong and I condemn it in everyone (except between armies- contradictory I know). I'll say this though- I am not a "scumbag"!
my dads family are romanian gypsies and my dad made sure that we were all educated , our family never stole from anybody and we all grew up to have jobs , i have a degree ,lets not judge people by a label.
The irony of similar languages, but different meaning. Something that the U.K people may say, may mean one thing, but in the U.S may mean a whole different thing. When the young boy said "beat them into a kiss", he may have meant something else, but to a person from the U.S, that is assault, rape, etc.

These people take chav to a different level. I can remember travellers or tinks as we called them (tinker for short) who came round the doors mending things for a bit of cash or bag of old clothes. They were polite and pleasant, living in their caravans causing no problems to other people. These people are a different breed, causing mayhem and mess and I'd love to know how they can afford all these big dresses and cinderella coaches etc (as tacky as they are)

The people in the UK show are Irish Travellers. They're not of the same ethnic group that people call 'Gypsy'. The ethnic group that came from India are the Romany, but the ones in this show are not from that ethnic group.
Does anyone know if this is an online series? I want to learn a bit more about this culture before I make any judgments about the people in it.
Could someone please tell me the difference between an English traveller and an Irish Traveller? I've heard that English travellers are actually of Romani heritage but just a different term for them, is that right?
How come the Pikeys in the movie Snatch didn't look like this?

@SoLongFutureBoy unfortunately i have only ever experienced the irish travellers at home here in england and in co mayo ireland when i was young . i take your point , i should and will differentiate from now on .
@Sashaeharmony im an irish traveller and yes we do have our own language some thing you wouldnt no about becouse ur not 1 of us and the reson why some of us aint poor is becouse we work hard from an eraly stage in life i was 13 when i started
although you would think they have massive families they do have quite big families but the main reason there is so many of them is they all stick together as gypos , kind of like a community i suppose.
That's ok then. I'm against 'travelers' who don't pay tax but still use the system, who break the law but try to get away with it but that is treating them as equals. I generally dislike anyone who breaks the law/ break others Human Rights. Gypsies should NOT stay on land that they do not own but as long as they are where they are legally (and live lawfully) then who are the rest of the population to tell them that they can't.
I've never been in contact with gypsies. Unlike fairs, etc. But my old babysitter was scammed by them and i have been scammed several times at fairs with friends. I'm not racist, just let these people live their lives. Yes, they may leave towns in a mess, not pay taxes, not give back to society, etc. But at the end of the day, there human and that's there lifestyle.

Not to sound rude, but almost none of them look remotely like Romany (at least like the continental branch). I would say none, but I may have missed someone. I heard the woman at the end mention the Tinkers, and I believe they are of Irish decent, a group of travelers often referred to as "gypsy" for their nomadic style, is this the predominant group being followed? Looks interesting, none-the-less.
I'll say it again - They're better than the SCUMBAGS criticizing them!!!

to galwaygal09 most of the gypsies in england and scotland come from ireland , according to paddy. you dont quite get what i,m saying,,,, or understand,,,,, the gypsies agreed to make the programme , showed off their weddings , spoke about their culture, also spoke about females being the lesser of the sexes, also said their place was in the caravan having babies,,,,,,. THEY SAID THOSE WORDS, not us . so therefore , we are allowed to have an opinion . backfired on them.
@clintdelicious i didn't make it up it is in the documentary one guy was hitting a women and forcing her to kiss him, they even said they beat them until they marry them.

I'm not a gypsy or a traveller myself but people need to realise that this show only shows one type of traveller community. Many gypsy communities would never even consider the method of 'grabbing' and would never allow their women and daughters to dress provocatively. Also, the purpose of this program is to entertain and maximise profits. And by doing so, some aspects seen in the program will have been exaggerated or even acted out.
If these people are not gypsies or travellers, then who are they? actors the BBC hired to perform? I highly doubt it.

@misstvtype 4 weeks ago i read a report in the paper that some of the scenes in the program had been exaggerated. i wouldnt have left that comment if i had no evidence of it. and i know the difference between a documentary and a reality show. im not stupid.
to galwaygal09 if you read my messages properly you,ll find i have not aimed my comment at the gypsies,,, my comment is aimed at parents,,,or grandparents who think it,s okay to let their daughters or grandaughters grow up before their time . and encouraging them to get married ASAP, i feel sorry for those poor girls who can never get the choice of having a proper education , and having a career. they are brought up to dream of nothing else than a big wedding dress ,, SO SAD.
1) I'm not sure whether anyone making comments here is truly Upper Class. Middle Class, including myself, maybe but I very much doubt Upper Class.
2) I would like to contest "You all." WRONG! Just like Gypsies, most of us are perfectly normal. Quite a few get things wrong and they deserve to get punished for it but "you all" is a sweeping generalisation where it is not needed.

@hemlock68 nah im at school with a few members of this "race" and they are some of the loveliest people ive ever met. and yes they do pay taxes. theyre extremely hard working, never take a day off school, dont drink or smoke and have really good morals. but obviously they'd be too boring to make good tv, so theyre not shown. and since there is so much anti-gypsy feeling across britain, channel 4 knew that the british public would lap all this up.

I appreciate and respect tradition and all...but 'grabbing' is not something I'd want my sons or daughters to be doing.
If someone done that to my daughter, I'm pretty sure I or her father would promptly batter them, no matter the excuse.

@Sashaeharmony their irish gypsies you cant compare them to romani gypsies. if they were the same they'd have the same name. you cant compare an irish person to an indian person so you can't compare an irish gypsy to a romani one. just like you can expect a puerto rican person to be like a mexican.

Are these people really gypsies? If so I don't think UK and rest of europe has the same definition. Gypsie is a person from the ethnic group that came to europe year ca1500 from india and they are NOT blonde.
@EmilyStation1994 oh get a grip. no ones telling them what to do. theres a limit between telling a woman what she can or can't do, and allowing her to put herself in danger. ie, my father lets me do what i want, within reason of course. but he'd never allow me to go out dressed like this. and its nothing to do with him bossing me around, he does it for my own safety. im sure not allowing women to dress provocatively isn't bossing them around. it's for their own protection and self respect

Gypsies can be good people too. There are bad gypsies but there are a large volume of the rest of the public of the UK that are vile too! Now I'm not going to endorse tax evasion (in gypsies, or anyone for that matter) nor am I going to try and be all liberal and claim that everyone has a right to live how they want (quite the opposite, in fact). There are good gypsies, there are bad gypsies, there are also good and bad members of the public. Now stop arguing.

People are acting so racist towards them! Yes they steal and dress innapporiately, etc. It's acceptable in their community. People think theyre weird or a danger. But they're humans in the end of the day. But they are generally some nice people in their society.

Smart bastards really, pick one the most controversial ethnic minorities in UK, film a bunch of salacious footage, know that people will be drawn to it like watching a train crash, then sell a bunch of big fat adverts.They could have made a completely different documentary about these people, instead they chose to make a fast buck & encourage racial hatred.
there is no differnce between irish travellers and english gypys only 1 is irish and 1 is english and the reson i no is becouse im an irish traveller and proud i would go made looking at four walls every day of the week and plus u never get board

@unnecessaryNoisex well said hun...i am a traveller myself they should come and film ppl like us we are nothing like this...i find this a show up...i work and so does my partner pay our taxes as well as you ppl.....this is all about the irish....i dont stay at home i can go where when and where ever i like and my partner can do the same...to be honest i dont like the irish travellers
