- Entering the world of 21st Century gypsy and traveller weddings, where ancient traditions meet modern fashions in an ostentatious culture clash, this film follows four gypsy and traveller families on their wedding day.
Considered on the shelf at 20, in gypsy and traveller communities many girls get married soon after their 16th birthday with the support of their family.
The weddings are visual spectacles: brides and their families compete to have the most flamboyant dresses; girls parade into church in enormous dresses that sometimes weigh more than the bride herself. Although the women look sexually provocative there is a tradition of premarital chastity that is increasingly unusual in Britain today.
Gaining rare access to this fascinating and often misunderstood community, the film uses the prism of the weddings to reveal a culture where marriages between first cousins are acceptable but having children out of wedlock is still taboo and divorce is unheard of.
Used to being taunted, this is a community that lives alongside but detached from mainstream society. It is a community of contrasts, living by centuries old religious and cultural traditions but at the same time embracing the gaudier extremes of the celebrity- and fashion-obsessed times in which we live.

Am I like the only girl who's seriously not fussed about a wedding. The fact if I even get married to anyone will completely shock me. So I've never planned what I want a wedding to look like, not even when I was a child. I think when you spend tons and tons of money on a wedding you miss the whole point in why you're getting married in the first place. I think if you are more excited to tie the strings with your partner than about what you are wearing on the day, it's the start to a beautiful life not just a beautiful day :)

I cant believe that theses girls are wearing miniskirts. I grew up being thought to cover my legs with long skirts. I also was not allowed to cut my hair. My mom lost it when I had a mohawk.

I have compassion in my heart for the ignorance of these people. Most of them lack education, understanding, the willingness to make a good life for not only them but for their children. They are all very selfish and just want to argue and fight and try to show everyone how big they are. They are not…they are very silly and yes, unfortunately, very ignorant.

Gypsy refers to the blood/race. For example you can be ethnically a gypsy/romani but not live in a caravan
travellers can be any race and basically live in a caravan. Is that right? I want to understand so plz educate thanx

Great programme! It's easy to forget that gypsy travellers are a completely different culture. There's a lot of prejudice against travellers, mostly based on fear. Hopefully we'll see more programmes that show proper gypsy culture and don't concentrate on negatives.
What an amazingly fun culture! I would love to know more about it! I wish I could meet these people and see what their life is about!

I seen this show and I loved it. Like the old woman said, these times are changing times for gypsys.
The film is amazing. I've never met any gypies before. I've only heard about them from friends. They're normally mentioned with disdain. The film however portrays a different view of them. Positive and interesting. Very interesting culture. I wish I knew gypsies/irish travellers. I would love to know more about their culture and life. I'm sure there will always be the bad egg around that would spoil their public image but which culture does not have one. All the best to them!

@PikeysRobURCaravans Although there's probably some legislation that says employees must have a break every so often, in various busy workplaces they don't strictly adhere to this with official breaks. Like my dad who works in an oil refinery and often he doesn't really have a proper lunch break, he just sort of eats while he gets on with something. But in some undemanding office jobs like I've had in the past (which don't pay much) they have a morning and afternoon break same time every day.

my dad had a petrol station in elsemere port, god help him it wasn' that far away from a big empy field, not only did they try to frigging rob him blind (everytime a new family came on to the field they all seem to thing that my dad hadn't come across a gypo before.
but once the field had been sprayed with a fire hoses so they couldn't drive on to it, instead of just moving on they came back with a big steam roller thing and tar mac they bloody field, I still remember it now lol

I live near a scottish and welsh traveller caravan park, literally across the road. In the time I have lived there, I have seen one of my close friends had a knife put to there neck because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and had most of my things stolen and as a kid was bullied constantly by them. This, builds a stereo type in your mind that all are bad which I know is untrue but from my experiences all that I have met so far have done nothing but cause mayhem

@Ellatha1 in the UK the word Pikie is referred to a gypsy of Irish accent. They also have a very distinctive look. But the majority of gypsies in the UK are the Irish, Pikie gypsy. The term pikie comes from the word "pike" meaning to go away from... Irish gypsies are referred to as pykies in Shakespeare, so the word has been in use for a long time. Because of the lifestyle they lead, crime, antisocial, drinking, etc... they've always been asked to go away.

OMG, when I first saw this show I was truly amazed. These women are beautiful,talented,and most of all deserving of these weddings they plan. Ever heard the saying"don't hate me cause I'm beautiful?" Near my cousins house in Ireland they found a horse with its legs sawn off. They accused the travelers, but I don't know...I don't know about any of it.
growing up and traveling in the former Soviet Union, I ran into a lot of gypsys. They always looked down their nose at me, especially after finding out that I am not Romanian or Moldavian.
