Literally what was going through my head when she was trying to make them out like saints, like sorry but these wedding usually end up with drunken fights police and mess no wonder they are reluctant to book them 🙄
Hilarious when she complains about discrimination, the owners of a joint can serve who they like and not serve those that they don't want. It's called freedom of choice. If I went to a fancy restaurant dressed as a tramp they wouldn't serve me. Not because they are racist, but because I'd damage their image and reputation.
Jacek1987: I cannot see anything wrong in organizing big, fat weddings. Some people may live in palaces and some in caravans, but regardless of wealth or titles everyone wants their own wedding day to be absolutely perfect.
I have the perfect solution Thelma....you are so committed and passionate about what you do....set up your own wedding venue with accommodation so that you can provide it all without worrying about that :) ....it will cost but will most certainly pay off in the long run
Mary made her way to the shop for a dress fitting...unescorted? I've seen a number of young women unescorted in this series, yet it was said that a traveler girl does not go out alone. Maybe the older ones can?
There are ALOT of Gypsies in the UK and Ireland. I have nothing but Irish blood in me and My Mum told me that Gypsies and Travelers have been a part of the culture for at least 100yrs.
As far as I am concerned I find the series quite intriguing. We can have a glimpse into their lives: not only traditions or customs, but also characters and habits. One has to admit that the general splendor of these wedding is very impressive. I cannot help myself from asking one question: Where to they get such considerable amount of money from? From my point of view this show could have been a great opportunity to eliminate serious cultural prejudices, but instead it does just the opposite.
I had gypsy do my nans drive way they started great but one day went asked my nana money for cement etc ripped her of six grand so my nan must paid for tacky dress or cake I don't trust travelers any more
(part2) Many traveller girls are removed from school very early, sometimes just to prevent them from being influenced by outside world therefore I am not really surprised why they dream of a perfect wedding and an outstanding dress.
I have asked myself that very same question. I'm not disrespecting or making fun of anyone, I do wonder what they do with the dresses once they've been used. I find it hard to believe they use them again.
I've seen all episodes available online and would love to see some more! Thelma is such a lovely, kind, motherly person with loads of patience and composure, despite the tight schedule.Gypsy brides are almost angelic compared to those bridezillas from US shows. And their culture is truly unique. Some of it's heritage could be exemplary to others, like strong moral values and tight family bonds, but there are a few upsetting issues as well, including analphabetism and strictness of gender roles.
While Gypsies are usually of Romani origin, most Travellers are English or Irish. What they have in common is their nomadic lifystyle. Travellers are proud of their own culture and traditions, such as “big fat gypsy weddings.” They are famous for the distinct fashion of young Traveller girls with fake tan, short skirts and belly tops.
Jacek1987: While watching this short video about the wedding for the first time fully planned by dressmaker Thelma Madine I’ve got an impression that a Gypsy girl’s priority is to lead her life mostly to the biggest day of all, namely her wedding. To sum up, the video is quite funny and examines the traditions and rules followed by Gypsies and traveller girls in Britain.
She looked soooo miserable in the dress makers! 😂 I agree, it is discrimination and that’s never ok, however let’s not pretend that travellers/ gypsy’s don’t discriminate against non travellers!
Must be the only female who never dreamed of getting married as a young girl. NEVER thought of getting married. Love the refer to glitter as diamonds !!.
I didn't mean it as discrimination towards working class. I was raised in a working class family myself and I noticed my parents always spent money the moment they got it and I saw it with other working class families. My bf also came from such a family but his parents were smart and now live a great retirement, while mine still live paycheck to paycheck. I just tend to notice it's much easier to follow that cycle if you are of the working class.
Looking at this video, I'm actually confused. On the one hand, they seem to have expensive taste but how they pay for such a wedding? On the other hand, I agree with jacobs5, maybe that is how this part of their culture looks like: sparkling, dazzling, tawdry.. funny. However, Thelma's patience and her work are really impressive. One thing is clear, we should never judge people by their looks and this video was created to present only part of the Gypsy life. It is entertaining and that's all.
You are right. However, the show presents a bit too simplistic view of the cultures of Travellers and Roma-two distinct groups, which are easily conflated here into one category-with no historical or political background given about them.
+ashley lancaster -- The men generally do "scab work", meaning they get paid in cash, off the books, and the jobs are arranged by word of mouth. They usually work construction, landscaping, car and home repair, or selling goods / trade. Those occupations make good money. A lot of the time, its also tax-free, since they usually are paid in cash. Plus, if they are getting free housing from the government, or living in a camper, you can eliminate the high cost of rent, which gives them a lot of extra cash. And perhaps the biggest one-- many of their young men will work, work, work for a few years and save ALL their money up. They won't be spending the money on a house, or college. So they spend it mostly on really nice cars, or a biiiiig wedding. Sometimes its the girl's father who pays for it. Sometimes its the groom.
+melissavalentine569 They are different from the rest of society, in that most of their money goes toward cars, weddings, and personal luxuries, instead of rent, or education-- which are only such big costs because we (Gorgas / non-Travelers) insist on spending 90% of our hard-earned money on simply having a place to live, or an education so we can PAY for that home.
Some may say they are provocative in the way they dress but in fact they’d say 'look but don't touch'. In fact young Traveller girls have a really strict upbringing. They are closely watched by their families, never left alone with another man to ensure they will remain virgins until marriage!
Im a gypsy and we are sometimes loud (We speak are opinions ) And the girls don't drink (Until married exept mellie shes just mellie and mellie is my cousin ) But we don't get out of control and we arnt always fighting
Proper Gypsies will save money for their girl's weddings for many years, because big wedding are a part of their culture and the bride's parents pay for the wedding.
That's pretty much how it goes. It's always working class people that are into this sort of stuff. They pursue the temporary high with consumer goods instead of planning for their financial future. Some people just don't have their priorities aligned.
Thelma booking a venue then telling them they have trailers that need parking spaces. Discrimination is abhorrent but as wedding planner who knows it exists, why would you give the venue opportunity to cancel? That felt staged.
I just saw your reply and No we have gotten use to it and it is great! If you do it to strong like drinking a whole bottle then it will make you sick but I know no one is gonna do that much lol but the one thing we do is eat things that taste good with it just get a taste of certain foods with it and take what you like my fave are (With vinegar ) Cucumber,Tomato,Tomato Onion cumber but just get the foods you like with it
Thelma Madine is an amazing dressmaker, who not only takes care for a dress but also organizes the whole wedding for the Gypsy girl within few weeks. For most people it would be unachievable. Unlike Gypsies, usually people spend months on planning and organizing weddings. Having watched this movie I disbelieved how shallow people’s needs can be; having a unique, royal dress... How could they afford such a dress while living in a caravan? Thelma's ability to work with Gypsies is admirable.
Umm in the first place they are not gypsy there fake gypsies why do I know cause I'm a real gypsy roma -_- they just call them self gypsies because they live in motor homes or RV,s yes it's true that the real gypsies don't go to school all they way thru but we REAL gypsies don't wear huge dresses or really short dresses because it would of been shame to the family so please stop calling these people gypsies there just tinkers not gypsies -_-
They're Irish Travellers; the traveling people who are native to Ireland. (i.e. ethnic Irish -- Descended from the ancient Celts & Vikings with a bit of Norman blood.) Normans were people descended from the mailand Celts (i.e. Gauls in modern France) and Vikings who settled there. Ireland, since the 1970's has tried to persuade its native traveling people to settle down. Some of them did well, others preferred to continiue traveling.
Those dresses are so enormous! They don't even look comfortable. All of Gypsy Brides resemble princesses from the Disney's fairytales. Nowadays, wedding are very expensive, let alone such exclusive celebration! On the other side, I admire their respect for tradition.
I’m wondering why Thelma doesn’t purchase a plot of land and create a venue for her brides- I know she has a lot going on but I feel like she is so trusted by the travelers and they work well with her - she’s a great business lady it seems like that would have been a great additional business to try rather than ‘training seamstresses’ or she could have done both with help. Think what money that could bring in!
Haha yeah, that's pretty much where I am now financially. People are fake nice but A LOT less drama. In fact, it feels great seeing upper middle class people avoid drama. Growing up in a community like these gypsies where everybody knows everybody and people are always in your business is exhausting.
The show is full of contradictions. There are Gypsies living in a caravan but wealthy enough to spend thousands of pounds on a wedding. There is the fake-tanned, bleach-haired bride looking for a posh wedding. Thelma herself, who is a great businesswoman, is presented as an overworked dressmaker. The showmakers forgot she makes a fortune in her very own company. They show the very universal truth-every girl wants to be a princess this one special day. Even though if its far beyond good taste.
One thing I really don't understand is that they often say how sad they are to leave their families etc because they're getting married... but why don't they stay near each other? Or why can't she keep hanging out with her sister? If you value family so much, why do you have to become some kind of 'recluse' when you get married? That never makes sense to me.
Why do they have to tell the venues that they are Travelers? What are they going to do when they show up, kick them out? I wouldn't tell anyone I was trying to book who or what the people were. That's just terrible to discriminate like that.
i think they love big extravagent weddings and clothes because they live as part of the lower economic class. Maybe it's just me, but Ive seen that when the poor go extravagent, they go gaudy.
@33melonpaws77 What are you talking about? Travellers are nowhere near the low end of the socioeconomic spectrum. She's wearing a dress that cost upwards of $40,000, never mind the bridesmaids and flowergirls and food and open bar and venue and limos and the carriages and the everything else. That's easily a half million dollars in an evening
I bet their wedding is expensive!!! OMG.... Our local wedding spent around 200 - 300 ringgit for renting a wedding couture and around thousand ++ ringgit for custom made couture... for the whole wedding roughly spend around 20 k ++
@rawrberrys One of the episodes, they said whole families chip in financially as well as they do move around alot hence they may not pay tax so they would have a bit of spare cash floating around unaccounted for that the government doesn't know about!!!!!
For me it's terrifying that so young girl is planning her wedding, on the other hand I understand that it's a part of their culture. It's extraordinary how the Travellers' brides-to-be differ from those in our culture. For me, for example, such a gown or her huge engagement ring are rather ugly and everything is going too far - it's like from little girls' dreams. I also find it ridiculous and immature but thanks to such cultures our world become more interesting and colourful, isn't it?
I can not say I have learnt much about the Gypsy culture from the clip. But I watched this film with great interest. I was completely amazed and shocked at the same time by the way the wedding ceremony is being arranged. I have to admit that everything is made with care and attention to details but from my perspective the whole custom is slightly exaggerated and ludicrous. For me, the bride wearing a gypsy dress looks like a huge meringue….
Let he without sin cast the first stone. Who are you to judge them? Why speak of different cultures in such a manner? The gypsys are so focused on the family unit, more families should be this focused on their families.
I agree with the opinion posted by sabinaboston2007 that watching this documentary is really entertaining. The culture of gypsies weddings is like a fairy tale so let us enjoy it. These girls and young women dream of having the most glamorous wedding dress in the world, as well as a wedding reception. Thelma Madine is the person who makes these dreams come true. She is very loyal to brides and will do whatever they ask for. If I only have enough money I will hire her to be my wedding planner :)
The presented gypsy wedding, as all weddings in this culture, is rather flamboyant and garish. We see how the Traveller families try to create the most lavish wedding possible with no expense spared. Honestly, it is nothing but a case of form over content for me. It seems that during the whole ceremony there was no room for the newlyweds' feeling as it was crammed with the bride's elaborate glitterball dress. I feel pity for the groom, as he looked like a poor second to all the glittering rest.
+Rosilee Lace Maybe because she thinks it's important to be honest..? And it's not nice to feel like you have to hide who you are because you're afraid of discrimination...
1. I know it is a matter of taste but I do dare to compare the final result of that preparation with the style of a Barbie doll. I was filled with nausea at the sight of purple feathers and pink ribbons. But you know: there is no accounting for taste….
Its all good & well saying that people shouldn't discriminate against travellers but that works both ways & I think we all know that's not gonna happen.
I love the innocence of the girls even though their clothing doesn't represent their values of chastity. This is the biggest event of their lives. Good luck to the girls and their men.
And the money where do they come from ? They sudenly have enough of them. But when their are married poor them. Children, children , cleaning and children so sad it is.
Huge amount of respect for Thelma....fantastic dressmaker and designer and so accepting and willing to stand up for them
Thelma is super-patient. Maybe she should buy her own hall and lease it out for weddings?
Who would insure a building like that 😂😂
Sometimes I think that a lot of these dresses would actually look really nice if it weren't for those huge skirts....
nessagirl1911 It might also help if they weren’t in such wild colors.
These venues turning them down doesn’t have anything to do with all the brawls, alcohol, and drama that always follows? 🤷🏼♀️
That is what I think.
Literally what was going through my head when she was trying to make them out like saints, like sorry but these wedding usually end up with drunken fights police and mess no wonder they are reluctant to book them 🙄
Even the co-op and little shops close if they find out there will be a traveller function near by because of damage and theft
If that's the case then where are all the fights in the series?
I love this series! Thanks for making it possible for me to enjoy.
This is hands down my favorite gypsy wedding 👰👑💕
Hilarious when she complains about discrimination, the owners of a joint can serve who they like and not serve those that they don't want. It's called freedom of choice. If I went to a fancy restaurant dressed as a tramp they wouldn't serve me. Not because they are racist, but because I'd damage their image and reputation.
Cool! They're first starting to show this in the States, and I haven't seen this episode before. Thank you very much for the upload.
I'm all for their lifestyle but NOT LEAVING THEIR SCHOOL EDUCATION SO EARLY AND NOT FINISHING!!

whats with girls in the UK and Ireland wearing fake tan? Looks awful
If we knew what sun looked like here we would have a natural tan 💁♀️
@@Mama_Mia84 just about to comment this as a Scottish woman. It’s the only way to have a tan.
I have the perfect solution Thelma....you are so committed and passionate about what you do....set up your own wedding venue with accommodation so that you can provide it all without worrying about that :) ....it will cost but will most certainly pay off in the long run

Looking forward to this out here in the states since seeing the commercial on BBC America. It looks nuts!!
Yes, they dress a bit racy. But they aren't allowed to act & be as provocative as they dress.
Last years i had watched big fat gypsy wedding series. I like it.
(part2) Many traveller girls are removed from school very early, sometimes just to prevent them from being influenced by outside world therefore I am not really surprised why they dream of a perfect wedding and an outstanding dress.
Thelma should have invested in a venue hall as well as her dress shop. Hope she's doing well now that these are near 10 years on.
I wonder if the girls get caught up in a huge wedding/party that they don’t really think about their future with their husband.
I have asked myself that very same question. I'm not disrespecting or making fun of anyone, I do wonder what they do with the dresses once they've been used. I find it hard to believe they use them again.
it's sad that they all leave school soo early to support there family...

The fact that they are gypsy's does not mean that they are poor.Mostly they have good jobs, but men earn money in boxing and owning their own bussines

Me too
Well, it certainly wouldn't be boring, that's for sure.
it isnt Fraught beleive me with tensions. Lot of all feuds bubble to the surface after a few bevies. And the fights on
You are right. However, the show presents a bit too simplistic view of the cultures of Travellers and Roma-two distinct groups, which are easily conflated here into one category-with no historical or political background given about them.
why not set up a hall just for travelors , since there are so many weddings. And then a limo takes them to the hotel
Bless her, she has more patience than I would
I want my lead back!🤣🤣
where do they get the money for these fucking weddings

home cooking, sunshine, and a secret drink they showed on video

Why would she tell them it's for a gypsy (traveler) wedding in the first place, when she knows they're not gonna book them.
+Rosilee Lace Maybe because she thinks it's important to be honest..? And it's not nice to feel like you have to hide who you are because you're afraid of discrimination...
they look pretty from behind, but when they turn around. ewwwww scary
🤣👍
The women could make a lot of money if they published a book or video or something on how they have such trim figures.
Exactly! Travellers say the p word the n word etc etc and are treated with respect yet don't do the same
Double standards smh
after a certain age yea cause their considered a maiden/elder almost
They’re so young.
She's such a lovely girl
I love the innocence of the girls even though their clothing doesn't represent their values of chastity. This is the biggest event of their lives. Good luck to the girls and their men.
They dress like sluts!!
@@mrmrsmsmisscloud7512 But that doesn't mean that they ARE sluts, you honorary member of the Taliban!

That girl's fake tan looks terrible.
