For those wondering how we captured my perfect audio in the house while I was talking about lighting... we used a toilet paper roll. For post processing we placed the roll in a bowl of warm water and sloshed it around.
I really don't want this style of video to become too trendy.... Whoever is watching: Please don't tell your friends about this channel! I'm joking but I'm also not! Love your style; fresh not "trendy"and to the point! Kudos!
The only thing to note here (which was touched upon in the video) is that you will need a massive amount of light to compete with the daylight coming through large windows. Here they're using 2x Aperture 300s, which are roughly equivalent to a 1K HMI. That's a lot of light! Alternately you can choose a tighter shot and move your light source in closer to the subject. Just be aware that you won't be able to pull this off with a 20W LED panel.
2:34 why do u put the umbrella that far from the lights? does it matter? could u for example bring the lights closer to the umbrella and dim them a little down? or just take the umbrella back close to the lights? or its all the same? thanks
Good question. I like my diffusion as close to the subject as I can and the lights as far away as I can. It fills more or the diffusion and makes the light softer when it’s farther away. Also because of the inverse square law with lighting it makes for a more evenly lit subject and scene with lights farther away from the source
People love you the way you talk and explained things clearly, not the other two guys .You have the skills and way of transmitting information so maybe you can teach to a university when you retire .
Absolutely loving these. Could you please make a video about exporting and uploading settings. Your videos looks so rich and crisp, despite UA-cam compression. Would love to know what you recommend we do when it comes to exporting and uploading.
Yeah I've been wondering the same thing! And maybe talk a little about settings up your monitor for editing, I noticed my tv looks very different from my 4K IPS Monitor. Whats the way to setup your monitor so your exports look as great as possible on all kinds of devices?
Your channel is so much more informative than those of the people you mentioned at the outset. I enjoy a lot of their content. But your content is invaluable.
You are amazing. The only channel I am aware of that asks to unsubscribe and dislike you. That definitely deserves like. Majority of so-called youtubers are annoying for constantly asking for likes and whatever. And you are the opposite. Awesome.
It's great to see someone embrace bright, cheery, high key lighting for a change! Many shooters default to dark and moody "cinematic" (ha!) lighting for everything they shoot. That treatment doesn't fly for a lot of commercial and corporate work. The 7' umbrealla is a good alternative to a large diffusion frame. I can't fit a 4x4' frame into my car, but I could find room for a large umbrella when collapsed. Q: Was the lighting difficult for Michelle to deal with? Overly strong lighting can be really tough on some talent's eyes. She doesn't appear to be squinting, so I guess it was fine for her.
Thanks! Yeah it wasn’t too bright for her. I’ve noticed diffused light even if it’s bright usually isn’t a problem. I think it’s important to have the lights already on and running when the subject enters the room. If a light is turned on once they sit down they might comment about the brightness more often
@@EpicLightMedia A trick that can help is to have the talent close their eys and "look" directly into the light. This will allow their pupils to partially adjust to the light. Then, have them redirect their "look" towards the camera (or interviewer) position before opening their eyes. This can help people who have overly sensitive eyes.
@@EpicLightMedia Thanks once again for a tip I can use on set. Every detail is important -- in a days shoot -- when how comfortable your model or client "feels" when the camera's roll -- grateful !
The sad part about these videos is that, when they end, I know that I’ve released the maximum amount of dopamine in my brain for a while. The next coming days will be dull, lacking anything exciting or interesting. I won’t be happy, nor will I be able to enjoy a full erection either. I’ve learned to cope with it, but I will still pass every coming day wishing for yet another ELM video.

I'm so glad you talked about raising the Aperture/TStop value when changing to tighter lens. This is so often overlooked, even by seasoned pros. It is definitely not common knowledge. Everyone must have skipped that day of school.
In reverence for Potato Jets dog dying, I am going to call a temporary moratorium on being snarky towards him. . . You know what I really hate about you: you know way too much about this stuff. I tune in to look at the pretty girl and I end up learning about lighting. BTW I love the dogs!
This guy is really sharing industry know-how and real professional insights rather than just drawing attentions to get views with very few real content like many “UA-camr” do 🎉
I'm a photography student, and this is better than anything I've seen in a textbook. Showing the "low effort Zoom meeting" baseline indicates what to expect - and to fix - before lighting and each step is clearly explained in context. You worked with existing light in ways I would not have tried to produce quality results with less equipment and labor. And as a still photographer working solo, less is always more. Incidentally, I can guarantee that umbrella will work with HMIs - a lot of traditional strobe heads had 500w halogen modelling lights and those big 4800Ws flashtubes get pretty toasty.
Thank you! I've been fighting a room with a lot of windows and (even filming on iPad) your suggestions of a high key next to the windows and a bounce have helped immensely.
Interesting idea to use the umbrella. I come from the photography world and actually have one of those, but I'm often left wondering how to mount a light panel to it. Never thought to use a grip head, might have to try that on my next shoot.
The question, is your Quasar on a Boom Pole? What is the black pole you use to extend the “hair-light” above your talent? Would you mind sharing the source you purchased that Boom Pole device as well? Thank you!
Nice job on this video. A note on the umbrella. You often have to be careful that the light isn't in front of the camera where if you don't flag flag it, it washes out the blacks or even flares. Plus, if you plan to use it outside, it requires a windless morning.
The trick with the ND filter to get a similar bokeh when filming with different focal lengths is neat. Did you then adjust the gain to hold the same exposure?
Amazing video as always. Love the lighting and the final image. Regarding the Canon C200 not being sharp when cropped in, I just want to ask, do you use "Set to Frame Size" or "Scale to Frame Size" while editing 4K footage on a 1080p Timeline? For anyone wondering what's the difference, "Scale to Frame Size" resamples/downgrades the footage and when cropped in more than 100%, it loses quality irrespective of the fact it's a 4K footage. "Scale to Frame Size" is better to use when we don't intend to crop in and just want the 4K footage to match the size of a 1080p Timeline.
Perfect blend of straightforward tips with some creative levity sprinkled in. Getting really annoyed with all the channels forcing in 10 minutes of vlog content around 2 minutes of half thought out camera review or lighting techniques
Was the problem with the c200 crop that it was not the RAW 4K? The non-RAW is only 8-bit which may have had something to do with it the fuzziness on the digital crop.
Being very stubborn I never listen!! She says don't subscribe, and my stubborn nature kicks in!! Not listening to y'all means SUBSCRIBE!!!! Love this channel hehehe!!!! Very informative thank you!!!!
I am a major fan of Epic Light Media. My set up includes multiple Bmpcc 6ks, Sigma art glass and multiple Aputure light Dome 2s. . . How do you measure for proper exposure with a ( simultaneous wide and tight shot ) multi camera set up? Especially for the really beautiful "Hi-Key" commercial look that you always produce.
I start with the background exposure of the main camera and then light the subject until the false color is good… but lately I just do it by eye. Then I sent the rest of the cameras to the same exposure. Long lenses get no ND or less ND sometimes and a higher f stop
I'm extremely sorry for being SUBSCRIBED to your channel. That golden tip "closing down the apurture for close up shots" thanks a lot. love your dark humor!

I thought my headphones were broken.
double or single layer? you can't just omit important information like that!
You must have spent some serious cash on that TP roll. Move over Arri, audio's coming to town.
U still have toilet paper? U damn rich guy. U got too much money from advertising. Need to unsubscribe again.
Thank you for actually making this look like a real commercial not some b-roll montage.

Hands down one of the best lighting videos out on UA-cam. Thanks for this top notch presentation guys!
I don't understand how 41 seconds of this lady telling me not to subscribe made me subscribe. Really not what I'm used to seeing on UA-cam.
Almost 60 years have passed since Brehm presented a theory of psychological reactance as an answer to your questions! :)
Is a very basic rule named: Reverse Psychology, works perfect specially in kids!!
we are subscribed! and we WILL NOT unsubscribed! we are fans, Michelle!
Love the "Ferris" ending..."Why are you still here?"
". . . . . . . . . . . . Really?"
One of the reasons why I subscribed in this channel is because of their humor.
i feel like i should've have paid for this!! ... quality content right here... as a freelancer this is so much helpful
BY FAR my favourite video channel! Peter mckinnon talk too much without saying any thing. I'm learning here more than i learned from my arts college

Hi! What’s the hair light you’re using 💛
Looks like a Kino Flo, or Titan Tube, maybe a Quasar light.
He mentions Quasar in several other videos. Presumably it's one of those.
That’s so beautiful!!! But can you show us how did you color grade it like that? Please
Man
hmm. just some of the best content

Hey! I know it sounds dumb but we edit a 4k timeline and then when prepping for TV we take the master export and export HD
Great video, thank you. But I was wondering, why you don't film in 4K with the Canon C200, since you got the possibility to do so?
Hey! Thanks I made a mistake in the video we do film in 4kDCI on the c200
