I am a professional video editor and I can tell you that so many camera-men/women out there really need to watch this. Thank you for making it look great and sharing your insights!
Golden Rule... "Find your frame first". Has ALWAYS served me well as a video pro [who has shot hundreds of interviews so far]! It's not about how long an interviewee will be seen on camera - it's about how well they present when they ARE seen on camera [and you never can be sure exactly how much of their content will need to be used].
I consume waaaaaaaaay too much content on UA-cam. So you should listen to me when I tell you: this is among the best informational videos on the platform.
Wow! That hit me! Thanks so much! When we posted that video we had like 1k subs and now we have way too many. I don’t know what to do. I guess I’ll keep trying to be as informative and honest as I can. Not sure why people watch it but whatever.
Not only did I not subscribe, I didn’t watch the video to the end. The entire experience was something I hope to forget. Oh, and the bell definitely didn’t get hit, clicked, tapped, or smashed.

I’ve watched many tutorials on YT about lighting, you are the first person I’ve watched who actually knows what he’s talking about and can convey it in an engaging manner that doesn’t feel like a lesson.
This is the best tutorial I have ever seen on lighting interviews. I learned a lot of this by listening to the wandering DP podcast, but this basically condensed a month's worth of podcast listening into 11 minutes. You've got a great sense of humor, great teaching ability and real skill in what you do. Keep it up! My career depends on it!
Well this is tragic. Y'all hit 3k. This is literally the best video I've seen in terms of production quality and speed and just general amusement on how to do REAL lighting... its incredible.
WOW, I just have found my favorite professional channel ever. I hate UA-camrs begging for likes or subscribers. It's like telling the viewer you think you like me, please do. People do not need that type of motivation. Instead, we need channels like this where the content speaks for itself. Thanks
How can a video be this funny and enlightening at the same time. Something about the model's face expression, sitting there nonchalantly, while he is enthusiastically explaining his techniques and trying different lightnings on her really cracks me up.

Really impressive. The difference is HUGE between initial configuration (no lighting) and the end at 8:11. Really inspires amateurs to take lighting seriously. (I am not a filmmaker, but a mathematics teacher who wants to create better youtube videos). Thank you for sharing this information.
I'm a photographer that doesn't even do any type of video and I watched this whole thing because it was so well put together and so interesting & engaging!!!! Definitely some good lighting ideas as well for my photography. Thank you! :)

Great content, man. You didn't waste everyone's time with an excessively long video filled with products placements, unrelated tangents, and subscription/like begging. You told us what to do in a very straightforward way. This is how an instructional video should be. Thank you!
You know, the effort that has gone into this to make it look effortless and easy going cant be underestimated. Nice work. Something I'm striving for. Just finished a vid and you know what, theres a little shine in my face and head and I'm just really knarked at myself as its pulling the focus from my beautiful sultry eyes to my bald head. Great tips on this really.
One of the best lightning video I've ever watched. Practical tips, humorous, and epic lightning. Before I watched this I thought my lighting was okay, now I can see how much more I can improve!
I NEVER leave comment on UA-cam videos. But for you guys, I MUST leave a negative comment! 1. Please tell Lynn she is the most patient model I have ever seen. And yes, a man's mandatory comment is that she looks lovely. I am sure the lighting played a part, but her demeanor during the 'fake' interview brought out her personality. You are right, the lines point right at her eyes. It makes her more attractive and now I know how cinematographers do it. 2. Thank you for your generosity. Every tip you gave was immediately actionable, from the items and where to purchase including your personal experience from mistakes. 3. F*ck your humour. Every time I was enjoying your tips, you made me laugh. Dude, you need to do a comedy show on UA-cam. Or, wait. Is this it? For shame... 4. Just to piss you off, here, take my subscription. Negative rant over. Screw you guys. Have a nice day :)

TechSavvyDaddy excellent video on lighting and very well explained I’m curious what lens and f-stop were you using to get the nice bokeh? Will you continue talking about how to interview and set a person at ease? what about sound and audio?
Yes! More videos coming out soon! F1.8 on both lenses. A cam at 50mm and B cam around 85mm. Sometimes I like my A cam at 35mm and B cam at 50mm though.
Thank you I loved your lighting I’m curious if you were traveling and wanted to light the same way but not carry such a heavy gear do you have an alternative method?
really appreciate how this is straight, practical information with no bullshit. Being a good videographer is ultimately being a good communicator and i think you've mastered the art of communicating.
Love your lighting. Also, I would love to see how you achieve your color grades. There's something about your commercial clips that are so different than most local ads I see, but are on-par with national ads.
Keep making content! Self-awareness and not taking yourself too seriously along with actual expertise on the types of projects lots of people have - this is all working.
This is a free Masterclass. Great tutorial! Back in the 90s we would add all kinds of gels to the background lights to get color highlights, but I like this clean look more.
A really good video. It's interesting though watching this and other videos on a similar subject, that people are lighting the subject first. Traditionally (yeah, yeah, tradition I know) you would first compose the shot, arrange the background etc, and then you would light the background first, and then the interview subject last. Something else to consider is to light to your f/stop. In other words choose the stop you want first so that you get the depth of field you are aiming for, and then light the scenario to this set up. It's great that there's so much choice of light type now. When I used to do this more regularly there were times when we had to let people know not to boil a kettle in case they blew the circuit with all our lights turned on!
Just one critique, if i may: The camera B composition has some jars right over her head, which can be distracting. So i would've put her on a more empty space, having the jars/objects not interfering with the subject/her (like you did with the camera A angle). But wow, GREAT video, all the way! Learned a lot.
man, been learning so much from your stuff. been having to film all of our church sermons and worship sets. even just the simple tip of not shootig with a blank wall but leaving space behind the subjest... its the little things. thanks a bunch!
I hadn't thought of an ND filter like this. I mostly use mine outdoors. Using that to change the lighting to enhance the subject inside looked brilliant.
So I watch your channel almost every single day and I must say, you guys are very good with the content you make. I appreciate the work and time you put into explaining everything for us mortals. Thank you
