On the sixth pace, Oryx speaks, saying, listen to me, Emperor Raven, and I will describe to you the Last True Shape, which is written on my tablet. **Oryx pulls out an iPad**
Dreadfang, Bathed in darkness...Taken is this blade, so much so that it radiates an aura of fear, hopelessness, and pain. This blade of darkness wielded by guardians will slowly eat away at the soul of light within each guardian. Eventually all wielders of this being of darkness succumb to its whispers...like an all consuming flame you to will soon be TAKEN!!!
If a sword could be taken, doesn't that mean a weapon could be as well, such as Thorn? Even though Oryx is gone, there are Blights and the transdimensional goo left by Taken presence. If Bungie capitalizes on this, I could see us getting taken forms of Exotics. What do you think Byf?
True, but it'd be a good way for them to reintroduce some exotics that are too hated ( Thorn ) and the weapons that were too OP ( Gjallarhorn ). At some point in the video, he mentions that being taken is to become more powerful by ironing out your flaws, but succumb to Oryx's will completely. Technically, Bungie could " iron out " the flaws in OP weapons by changing the Exotic Perks and apply a Taken theme to the change/ weapon. Ex. Thorn's burn could change to an effect that just stops Regen of shields for a while, and their screen could change like when your hit by the cloud from Taken Captains ( less intrusive though ). Sure it'd be a gimmick, but it would allow us to get more exotics faster. They'd just have to change the exotic look/ perk instead of creating a new weapon.
Literally one of my favorite youtubers. I don't think anyone has taken as much time as you to study the lore of Destiny and explain the way you do. It's always so interesting! Thanks!
this video gave me the chills. god I love your lore videos and the lore of destiny itself. It's so amazing how many things there are in there. the stories and these mysterious. one of the many reasons why I love Destiny so much.
Byf these vids are awesome .. I think that you and your amazing team of animators are the best destiny lore tellers in UA-cam... With out these videos I would have a general knowledge of my favourite game but these are interesting and awestruck awesome ... Keep up the good work
guys remember in the ending cut scene of the taken king , where eris comes out of no where and dimantles oryxs sword? and she pulls out crystal , I think the new sword has something to do with that
What you're talking about at around the 7:00 mark makes sense. When we wield the hive blades ourselves, we can discharge the energy violently, but we disentegrate the swords due to our power being so different from that the hive wield (as you show at 10:07) The hive sword pulses with light each time it's used, eventually being destroyed by it
I am a new subscriber and i have been watching lots of your videos, mostly on lore. I absolutely love listening to these. It shows me so much more of the world of destiny. Thank you for all your work. -forever subscribed
Byf does any entries in the grimoire tell of what happened to the wild life on each planet? Cause on Earth there isn't a single fish nor bear or anything to be found there are only birds and the only hint of wild life existing was or is the snow lynx on the be brave emblem.
Byf, I really hope Bungie does bring the backstage grimoire stories to the front stage. There's soooo much great source material under their very noses that they need to utilize. Great video though! It's help me understand sword logic better.
From what I saw in here, I almost want to say that the Darkness might be a Taken Version of The Traveler, if the Darkness itself is an entity. And if I'm not getting everything hopelessly wrong.
People have probably said it before but let me say this now, you should be a dev at bungie for destiny, you would truly save the game and make it into something great..........something as close to the wonderful vision that the many collaborative minds all sitting together with one purpose originally created!!!! Love your work!!!!
Byf you were saying that the Hadium takes the form of the weilder. So our blades are shiny and look nice the Hives are jagged and evil, this made me go back to a character in the story that deserves much more time and lore. Ecthar his body looks to have light pouring out of his eyes and chest, his arms have it flowing around them and his blade looks almost pure light.Maybe you could share your thoughts here or in a video.
Mechanically, there's also the simple fact that a Guardian can survive enough direct enemy fire to close to melee range and effectively strike with a sword.
So I am watching this for the first time during D2. I have noticed more swords in D2 and I thought at first that it was because people liked them for PVP, but watching this makes me think that the lore will take us closer to the sword logic that maybe Shaxx has an idea of what the next threat will be
Silly thought: What if by wielding Dreadfang, it sets up a future development where we ourselves become corrupted by it in some way? Not only would this allow for some developments from a gameplay perspective (the current classes will start to feel stale as time goes on), but also opens up a whole realm of possibilities for where the future story could go, cause we're only 2 and a half years into the franchise's story and 3 out of the 4 enemy factions have been well and truly trounced by us.
Mechanic wise, us guardians do in a way follow the barbaric path of sword logic. We start out killing the disposable soldiers of the fallen, hive etc. We kill & kill being granted more & more power (our light level) working our way up to higher powered enemies. The bigger their power the more we earn from defeating them. (Our XP & higher level loot) just a cool little thing that came across my mind
"Simply a conduit for power" Very much similar to a metal blade wielded by someone with electrokinesis. The blade alone is simply sharp and/or heavy- but when held by the electrokenisis user, it becomes a blade of lightning.
Just a FYI, if you slow down the video speed to 0.25x you can see that, when doing the Phoenix Uppercut, that you switch hands. dunno if anyone else noticed this before, but its a cool little detail.
When i first saw the video i said " holy shit 20 minutes that's too damn long " I was wrong actually i learned so much from the video ! Great infromation ! Keep it up ! 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I believe that Dreadfang was one of Savathun's or Xivu Arath's swords. It talks to Oryx like a sibling, and it is taken, which is something that only the three siblings can do.
Speaking of lore, I was thinking, Oryx has darkness with which he communes and talks to the ahamkhara(or so we think the worms are actually), they bind him and his hive to fufill their goals as said in the book of sorrows. Xur is bound to be a vendor , and " his will is not his own" so are the nine that he follows the exact same as the worm who gave Oryx power? Just food for thought.
The necrochasm is a fusion of human and hive technology as well and described as ONE of the weapons of sorrow, and implies that they're more the hive have made. Hopefully in future games we get to see and use more of them
I think you are spot on with that criticism. if Bungie could flush out some of these fantastic story elements, I would be playing this game for more than just entertainment. it would pull me in like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars. and, unfortunately, it seems to me to be such an elementary slip up on their part. Halo was addicting because of its gameplay, yes, but it pulled me in because of its character and story even more so. gameplay was merely a facet in the diamond that Halo's lore was.
Byf why do you think the Taken glow? since they are so close to the Darkness you would assume it means they are farther from light but maybe the Darkness is just a term for how we use this power and Darkness and Light are more like the light and dark sides of the Force in which neither are inherently good or evil but one is more constructive and one distructive. Seems like this sword may also be the first step in exploring that concept here in Destiny
Hey Byf, where'd you get that piece of lore about the setting of Destiny being in the 28th century? I though Bungie didn't want to give an actual time period for the game, to keep the historical context and the post-apocalyptic theme vague. It would be hella cool if you responded. Or really just anybody, I would love an answer to this question. Thanks in advance!
This is my understanding as well; our light is our acausal will over the universe, and its why the Vex are unable to predict us, why we are able fight the Hive's own strong willpower, and where our power stems. Now, I think it'd be interesting if Swords would scale with our own light, with our power. As out power grows, so does the strength of our blade, or gun, etc. Instead of this system where our own strength is dependent on the blade, gun, chest piece, etc. OUr equipment through which we focus out Light should AMPLIFY our already powerful Light.
So here's what I want from Destiny 2; since we lose our gear at the start, I want a chance to regain our Exotic swords, but their chipped, cracked, even dulled. But they're more powerful than in Destiny 1. It'd really fit with the properties of Hadium
The reforging of Willbreaker and the defeat of Oryx have very serious complications I hope they address. The act of taking Light back from Darkness is a matter that would open up so much discussion in and of itself I don't even know what to say in regards to this, it's too open ended to even put some conjecture out there. The other point I'd like to focus on is this sword logic. Since we defeated Oryx, the top of the pyramid of Tribute. What does that mean? We completely disproved the "Answer to the Question" so to speak. Wouldn't that by proxy mean the Hive would completely fall apart? ...Unless, in their separation, Xivu Arath or Savathun became stronger than Oryx.
the Takanome Ranger armor set has intresting quotes, telling about the rangers, the protectors of the refugees during the collapse when there were no guardians. lore video?
Wow byf. The lore of thus weapon is so cool. And to think, from all this background knowledge, half the communitee just wants it cause it looks dope. -_-
I noticed that you mentioned the Destiny are being on the 28th century. What lore did you use to calculate this? I've been trying to figure this out for a while
get I just realized something. you can stay where crotas soul is and obtain more power in that last mission you played in the background. what if you were to kill one of those bosses while under that. maybe that's how you get those titan guantlets
Id love it if dreadfangs special attack was a burst of darkness. Since itd be dark, it wouldnt draw power from the guardian. But since its legendary, it seem unlikely that itll even have an attack
(This is just a theory by someone who has only started looking into the Lore & the Grimoire) Talking about the Swords, Everyone would remember Radegast blade. A blade that is broken spells the in of the Iron Lords.Even though Shaxx has fallen out with Lord Saladin. The Quest for the swords where called 'Reforging the Sword' and also the one 'Reforging the Blade'. Just a Theory Here By any chance could Lord Shaxx been seeing If Radegast blade could be repaired. Getting Guardians to Test the Weapon in Crucible, acquiring the materials and forging it. Radegast's Blade could have been forged from the clash between the Darkness and the Light on the Battle Field. Just food for thought.
It could have actually been because the Titan artifact, RADEGHAST'S BLADE, states that 'As long as this sword remained whole, the Iron Banner couldn't fall.' If that's true, that's a powerful sword, the amount of Lords in the Iron Banner is uncountable, and if Radeghast had a sword so powerful it represented THE WHOLE IRON BANNER then that's pretty fucking metal (eh, see what I did there?). Thing is, it couldn't possibly be Hadium, any form of it was either pre-made swords or from major Hive ships, and back before the Iron Banner fell, no one dared to even touch Hive ANYTHING. A good argument though.
I fully believe Guardians are not warriors of justice, peace, or mercy. We wield so many powers that we do not understand and clearly show the ability to corrupt absolutely. The Traveler only gave us Light because that was the power it wielded, but now our will extends to both the Sky and the Deep. Our willingness to accept power from any source is our greatest strength, thus our Shape will be the Final Shape.
Each dent...each scratch...each wound...each death...The logic of Destiny's weapons shows the history of their wielders. The true power which they can contain. The Red Death and Bad JuJu, consuming of both the soul and in some cases the mind. But what Byf explores here is how a weapon of this sort of history exists. If we are to assume this is a hive blade, this weapon shouldn't even be tangible for us to hold. For example, The Sword of Crota barely remains in our grasp before returning to it's masters, maybe the definition and reshaping of being taken allows Dreadfang allows it to exist in a single state across physical and astral realms. Yet a we know nothing of its history. What it has seen, what it has done. Imagine the possibility of understanding how a blade can become so violent, so scarred. How it became a survivor. And now I pose the question. What other weapons lie out their with a deeper and longer history?
Amazing story! Sure is a shame Bungie didn't tell much at all. Why would they have done that? The evidence of a great story is clearly there, you just showed us.
But is it a legendary that looks fancy or a new exotic sword. I wish there was more swords, like ToO or IB or Vanguard specific or Crucible specific-hell even factions.
I'm disappointed that Toland explanation of Hive swords didn't get brought up, which is basically that they get stronger and sharper with each kill (Ascendant Sword grimoire). You kind of dance around the meaning of the sword logic, but I don't think you directly addressed it. Those imbued with the power of Darkness (Hive via their worms) and those inside throne worlds/ascendant realms gain more paracausal power with each kill (multiple passages from Books of Sorrow). Just like their users, the swords themselves gain more power from the kills as Toland explained. It's not just a tool to channel the user's power; Hive swords themselves build up their own power.
CAN YOU DO YOUR NEXT LORE VIDEO ON SYLOK, THE DEFILED, I JUST READ HIS GRIMORE AND IT'S PRETTY INTERESTING. I DON'T THINK HE REALLY IS A PRISONER, I THINK HE'S JUST GETTING STRONGER.
Question: If the Taken have their will erased when they are Taken and only exist to serve Oryx's will...what the hell happens to Oryx when he takes himself? Is he still conscious? Does he know what he's doing in the raid? Or, is he just becoming "One"with that Energy? If anyone knows of a lore video or grimoire card they can point me to that also answers this, please do.
+Gearshifter09 When Oryx absorbed the Energy of Willbreaker, he was severing his physical link to our world in order to make a quick getaway to the Ascendant Realm, mostly because he wouldn't give us the pleasure/satisfaction of killing him here, even though it wouldn't be a true death on his part. It's why he's laughing as he leaves. It's sinister indeed, but to him, what he's doing is bloody hilarious. Of course, by doing that, he gave us the Legendary, and subsequently Exotic Blades as awesome weapons...silly Oryx. But in return, Touch of Malice, aka: Oryx's Soul Jar.
If there is a dimension where a being can be corrupted and born again by darkness (creating taken) why can't there be a dimension where the same happens, only with light? It could cleanse taken or anything, even this blade, but we would just not know how to access it. This would be so cool if you could harness it when you're fighting a future give boss or something.
Dumb question; is it possible to do an Extra lore on Hunters? There are so many things there, Six Coyotes, Takanome Rangers, Ana Bray and so on. There is just so little info on those...
Thorn? corrupting us? sounds like the legends are true. Thorn really is cancer
Dreadfang: YOU MERELY ADOPTED THE DARKNESS. I WAS BORN IN IT, MOLDED BY IT
lol
+minecrafterselite1 it shows my appreciation for his funny comment without the effort of actaully writing something
+minecrafterselite1 ...
I'LL MAKE THE UNIVERSE GREAT AGAIN
I find it mildly disappointing that he didn't say this when he got so close
On the sixth pace, Oryx speaks, saying, listen to me, Emperor Raven, and I will describe to you the Last True Shape, which is written on my tablet. **Oryx pulls out an iPad**

But a cool gimmick :)
+Sean Hickey Taken Thorn Year 3 confirmed haha
+Sean Hickey Hopefully, they would create a new weapon type for them that's not exotic
Byf could be a great voice in Destiny.
True
Agreed.
Absolutely
he would definately be a warlock
Sounds like a mix of the Speaker and Shaxx.
Literally one of my favorite youtubers. I don't think anyone has taken as much time as you to study the lore of Destiny and explain the way you do. It's always so interesting! Thanks!
Taken pun intended?
HAHA xD No actually.
Why do we have swords? Cuz it's cool!
Could Dreadfang just be a sword of a Taken Captain? It looks more like a Captains sword than a knights.
The stupid idea is that the sword has ammunition
When the ammunition is over, the blade disappears and the sword handle remains
Game mechanics, otherwise swords would be incredibly overpowered.
Ahem black talon in crucible... Would not agree
this video gave me the chills. god I love your lore videos and the lore of destiny itself.
It's so amazing how many things there are in there. the stories and these mysterious. one of the many reasons why I love Destiny so much.

+LeftwardGlobe16 Good old days of Halo 3!

You know what you right
@@GamerBob123 yep but is the next speaker
I love these extra lore stuff. It explains a lot of stuff. Also, when will you continue the book of sorrow series? It will be really cool
Taken by the darkness, now…and forever more, to sit in my vault
My goodness I love your voice. Story time with James is one of my favs now. Great vid

Man, knowing that the Ahamkara are the Worm Gods puts all these old videos in a grand new perspective.
dread fang - "kingly brother, i thank you for your failure. the sword logic demands a pinnacle" is this his sister to oryx?!
Hearing Oryx talking about a Final Shape with that very expansion out next month gives me chills
Good luck in the next few weeks dude. Can't wait to see the videos when you get going full time :)
Byf does any entries in the grimoire tell of what happened to the wild life on each planet? Cause on Earth there isn't a single fish nor bear or anything to be found there are only birds and the only hint of wild life existing was or is the snow lynx on the be brave emblem.
Weeabo

Pretty sure the original intent was to have more wildlife than just birds.
So, your explanation is...resources weren't being wasting to make bears.
probably the Fallen.. they seem like they'd wipe out anything that doesn't help them
Fighting Guardians that have been taken would be cool

hey with the new taken armour does this mean from what you just said mean that the guardians that wear it have lost themselves to darkness
Love these vids by byf
As always byf, fucking excellent.
Brilliant Byf....... This is a true labor of love for you isn't it?
I FREAKING LOVE THESE LORE VIDOES In BO3 all they do is just give you gun, Destiny has a never ending story
Yeah but it's not in the GAME!!
+omensoffate BUT UTS IN THE TEREIBLE ONLINE GRIMROIRE!!! WHO DOESNT WANT THAT!!!
I always wondered what are gate lords and what area out of time are they in
Dumb question, why wouldn't the taken forces that Oryx took be part of the taken invasion of Sol?
That is the best speech I've ever heard
This series is amazing it's like hearing something from Morgan freeman but 109x better
+CJ Creel Byf has an amazing speaking voice...but if Morgan Freeman narrated this, I'd literally jizz in my pants.
CAN YOU DO YOUR NEXT LORE VIDEO ON SYLOK, THE DEFILED, I JUST READ HIS GRIMORE AND IT'S PRETTY INTERESTING. I DON'T THINK HE REALLY IS A PRISONER, I THINK HE'S JUST GETTING STRONGER.
what's the name of the OST track that's on your extra lore vids?
this is the vaati Vidya of destiny
what if there is a strike or a raid to were you take a remake of oryx to a dimension full of light and cleanse the boss of darkness?
I wanna fight those bird things, or at least the taken emperor raven
It’s been at least 5,000 years. [The source to this number rests eternally cloaked in the clouds at sea.]
+My name is Byf Is it possible that Dreadfang once belonged to Xivu Arath?
Dumb question; is it possible to do an Extra lore on Hunters? There are so many things there, Six Coyotes, Takanome Rangers, Ana Bray and so on. There is just so little info on those...
what about the other Nightstalkers what happened to them because the only night stalker that I've heard of is the guy that owes cayde 6 glimmer
