So...what if there was a choice in a later Expansion? Say the Light and the Dark. Guardians get to choose whether or not to stick with the light or embrace the dark, and get a new storyline based off of what side they pick. Then there would be new strikes, maybe even raids on the Tower, and an enhanced PvP system where it's the Light Guardians vs the Dark Guardians. Either that or like have it every October. That'd be cool.
Plot twist, we shall become the corrupted guardians. I can see it happening though, we are very much immersed in the darkness as we are fighting it. And as with all things, sooner or later, all the blood we have spilled will darken our armor.
I love how you get into the universe for this, talking to the audience like we're not just fellow gamers: we're fellow guardians. Brings the lore to life. After reading most of the Grimoire stuff I've been able to find, I can tell Destiny knows how to tell a story and has some modern poets on their team. It's a shame it has to be overlooked in the actual gameplay, but it's already filled with stuff to do.
I think if Bungie makes Grimoire for Toland's Journals, they should make it like the story "Flowers for Algernon," in it's form. Toland starts the Journal, slightly enlightened, one with the light, with apparent curiosity for the Darkness, then his interactions with the darkness degrades his speech, and makes him slightly insane, until after he gains the "True" power of the darkness, where he becomes far more literate than he ever was.
I'll openly admit to being a "corrupted" guardian. I find the Darkness bares more information and insight than the Traveler, the Speaker, and those who follow them. There is a lot of secrecy withheld in the walls of the Tower and that is not something I, as a guardian, am not comfortable with. If I'm fighting for you, I at least deserve to know why other than "That thing is bad, this thing is good, bad thing hurt good thing, kill bad thing." Guardians in general are just dead warriors fighting for a "god" that we know nothing about. Why did it bring us back? Why did it leave the Fallen? What does it want from us and why must we fight for it? These are questions we must ask ourselves, fellow guardians. The answers are unknown to us and even our Ghosts have no clue why they are alive and why they were created by the Traveler other than to help us. What secrets does the Speaker hold? Who is the Stranger? What did the Stranger mean by "A side must be chosen, Guardian. Even if it is the wrong side." Guardians, question everything.
Would be awesome if Destiny 2 had a division between guardians which you would have to choose at the start of the game kind of like how guild wars works and then you form alliances with people of similar beliefs to the lore and what you think is right. The crucible could be more than just a friendly battle between guardians it would be all out world vs world war. I'm heavily bringing this from Guild Wars 2 but I think it would be great.
what if your actions and weapon/armour choices effected your overall darkness rank and if your rank was too high you were no longer allowed access to the tower. Maybe there could be another social space only available to guardians of the darkness, perhaps there could even be a war between the two factions in which guardians could fight each other, like an iron banner type event.
Praxic: "We must destroy everything touched by darkness" Toland: "Excellent, child, you are more dedicated to the sword logic of the darkness than most - cut away that which offends you." Osiris: "Weigh your actions against their consequences - not all who wander in the darkness are lost" Player Guardian: "NEW TOYS!!!!!!"
Byf i love these videos so much, the lore is so good, like seriously they could really make some amazing movie stuff etc out of these stories and I love the way you portray all the lore! Pls keep doing these because they are amazing to listen to
Could you think about McMasters children's hospital in Hamilton Ontario for another charity? I know it's your choice but I have to recommend them. Shortly before my birthday in February when I was 14 I found out I had Hodgkin's lymphoma. They helped me through the treatment and were nothing but amazing the entire time. This isn't about what happened to me but again I have to recommend them.
Also, about understanding the darkness: I think we should understand how the darkness works against us and what laws it works by so that we can best defeat it, but we shouldn't try to use it's practices against itself, since that would only be becoming apart of it.
so you mentioned us having to fight corrupt guardians. that would be an interesting propesct to follow for an expansion, and with tolands desire to take the thrown what if his mind is what corrupted them and guides them on there dark path.
Hell my hunter, titan, and warlock would just turn around and shoot the tower into oblivion. Note it is not due to the fact one uses Red Death.... Okay maybe slightly.
are they really the bad guys? we mindlessly kill everything we see because a guy with a mask who we never has seen his real face told is too because a giant planet told him too.
Fantastic video with some super interesting info. It's hard to believe the depths of some of these characters. Excited to see some of this kind of stuff fleshed out in game. *fingers crossed*
I have to agree with you, Osiris especially. He's far from corrupted. He knows the most on how the vex technology works and can use it for his own purposes. Not to mention each of the races we fight have been visited by the traveler before. That's probably where some of their technology came from. The vex's time travel abilities, the fallen's servators, the cabal indestructible shields. All of those and more may have come from the traveler. That being said, Osiris might know more about the traveler than even the speaker.
In your books of sorrow, you spoke of the three princesses mother character. I think she is, or may have something, or somehow involved with ares mourn. She just knows so much about oryx and other hives.
hey I had an idea for a series. so basically it's about viewing other guardians from a lore perspective and giving us an ability to make a lore background for our guardians. so basically people would send in a short machinima style clip of their character as well as a short character background. simply it's just clips of our guardians while letting others get to know our guardians from like a lore perspective like guardians like Saint 14 etc. idk this was just a random thought
this was something I thought of a while back, "Dark Guardians". I had a thought that these Guardians were either found and are empowered like a normal Guardian by the Darkness or were Guardians like Dredgen Yor who turned their backs on the Light. Use powers very similar to Guardians
I would really love to see new characters in the game whom are corrupted Guardians. Similar to how Eris arrived in the tower as a new character for the Dark Below expansion, we could see these Guardians exile themselves from the tower, and willingly join the darkness. I would also really love to see more of the Speaker, possibly even see him fight, as he is the currently most powerful Guardian. (Elaboration on the Exo Stranger, and Exo lore in general would be awesome) ((while we're at it, let's see more of the citizens lives, and the perspectives of the enemies on the guardians. I loved the excerpt from the grimoire card where a Fallen describes is guardians as "the City's Ghouls".))
The irony of hearing byf say osiris is enlightened right after re-watching this right after watching the new vid about how suspect osiris acting in season of the splicer :P how the turns have tabled!!
I was thinking each class could get a taken subclass. Each with abilities to do with different taken. Maybe warlocks could be based of hive taken. Titan can have fallen and hunters vex
when guardians use super they would become shrouded in darkness, warlocks would fire darkness blast, damaging and blinding in darkness. hunters mimic taken hobgoblins, locking on to multiple targets, firing tracking bullet that explode on contact. titans become an enraged juggernaut, losing the ability to shoot but causing massive melee damage, increased speed and defense
thank you for choosing Seattle children's hospital Byf! its people like you that allow my little brother and I to get our kidney transplants. thank you!
Hey Byf, new listener just recently. Bringing up the guardian corruption and how they classify it. I feel (and stop me here if you cover this in later videos) that maybe the speaker is a agent of the darkness. Think about it, most that become a corrupted guardian, just go off and research the darkness, not try to wield it. And when they do this such as osiris did, they are banished, and I wonder who banished him?
Great lore video Byf! I had no idea Toland died literally; I thought he lived on in the Hive ascendant realms in his physical body after Ir Yut spoke to him. That particular lore bit with Ir Yut and Toland has always been a bit grainy and inconsistent in its interpretation from channel to channel. Thanks for clearing that up and explaining it in a clear and concise way!
Well he said (might be slightly paraphrased) "I am dead but I will never die" so it's kinda muddy. I'd guess he's like a Hive now, they're basically corpses but they're "alive"
Toland and Osiris are my favourite characters. They appeal personally to me as they want to beat their enemy by knowing it. The tower won't last forever, and it's merely putting off time. Toland may have been mad, but he communed in the darkness. Toland has been taught death itself's song but he helps others however, he works alone. These two characters are relatable to me. Who do you prefer...
Everyone saying they'd love to be able to choose between darkness and light, and all I can think of is how badass it would be if Toland took over the Hive and was the final big bad of the Hive after we kill Oryx's siblings, or even the final avatar of the darkness that we have to defeat after all of its armies are defeated. After all, he was able to touch the darkness much more easily than Oryx was.
I personally think that Toland has gone completely insane. It's heavily implied that he was never the most stable individual to begin with, but being trapped in the Throne World alone for so long, with no one to communicate with, for however many years it was between the day that he died and the day Eris crawled from the Pit, and only the Hive for company, has likely driven out whatever remained of his sanity.
Another form of corruption that you did not mention in this video was that from particular items. Dire Ahamkara armor being the obvious ones but also the Vex armor obtained within The Vault of Glass. I have also always been curious as to who exactly made the infamous "Red Death", I doubt however that Bungie will ever follow that particular topic up. PS Simple observation: The Titan class does not have access to any form of Dire Ahamkara gear and the Titan armor set obtained in The Vault of Glass does not seem to share the same "suggestive" notes of corruption/influence as the Hunter and Warlock sets and states that it is simply Kabr's armor. Perhaps this suggests that Titans are incorruptible (or at the very least less so than other Guardian classes).
This would be such a great expansion! That you would be able to equip 2 versions of armour/subclasses/weapons, gear that gives you light or gear that gives you the opposit and gives you completely other ability's!
and they could give you a ending in a future destiny that has you sacrificing yourself to the darkness to end it to save the traveler and its light short of like fallout 3's ending.
What's funny is, in the end Toland is right. Just since TTK we've had to eliminate 2 contenders for the Osmium Throne. The only way to defeat Oryx was to have a stronger sword logic. And now, what Oryx's sisters must know he's dead, and will come. How much of this could we have prevented, how much of our solar-system could we have taken back from the Hive, the Cabal, the Vex, and the Fallen had we simply sat on that Throne ourselves like Toland wanted?
I would love a raid that has you going against the last city and the traveler. Only available once you get a full set of taken armor and you end up fighting against other guardians along the way, kinda PVPish, but where you are a dominating killing machine that is much stronger than ever before. And the end is the traveler unleashing a level of light that wrecks you. Maybe not a raid, maybe make it a heavy duty strike. But have it provide the player with a huge grimoire dump upon completion.
If I had a choice between being a purely light guardian or someone like Toland or Dredgen Yor or Osiris I would pick the Toland, Dredgen Yor, and Osiris path.
i feel like the vex play a bigger part than all the of our enemies, and the exo stranger possibly possesing vex technology will play a big part in the destiny expansions/games to come
my biggest question is where do you consider the line to be? Logically the less knowledge you have of your enemy the lesser your chance of defeating said enemy will be. So where is the equilibrium?....the perfect balance of understanding of both darkness and light? BTW i love this destiny lore, you do an amazing job with your videos! :)
I love your lore videos, but I'd find it super helpful if you could include a list of relevant grimoire cards/item descriptions in the video description. I'd like to read them all for myself and see what conclusions I come to. :)
I do hope in the future that Bungie will give us the option to use the darkness (giving us new subclasses) being exiled from the Tower and join with different factions, and you can decide how "corrupt" you can be, if you fully embrace the darkness you can never go back into the light.
I might be the first to be corrupted, probably because I kinda enjoy the study of the Vex. Given the freedom I might roam free in the Vex Gate Network.
It’s fun to go back and watch this and realize that Reyzl Azzir and Dredgen Yor are one in the same.
Byf, and everbody reading this, you are awesome people I am so glad to be a part of this community.
it's so weird finding a real guardian in the YT comments
+Ze AwEsOmE Hobo yes but I'am here too :D
I am also glad that your part of the awesome me.
+CrotaSon OfOryx uh...ur the son of oryx...and a guardian? KOOL!! Can i be atheon! 😂
+TheHappyCrafter Maybe :D so many possibilities ^^
So...what if there was a choice in a later Expansion? Say the Light and the Dark. Either that or like have it every October. That'd be cool.
That would be cool
This would be awesome...but would bungie actually do it? I doubt it.
+CrotaSon OfOryx I could tell you... I could tell you.. (biggest troll in the world)
i expect that we will use the dark in destiny 3
Enragement Child pretty confusing shite idea.
Plot twist, we shall become the corrupted guardians. I can see it happening though, we are very much immersed in the darkness as we are fighting it. And as with all things, sooner or later, all the blood we have spilled will darken our armor.
Roland Ravina incorrect we are getting a choice now
I love how you get into the universe for this, talking to the audience like we're not just fellow gamers: we're fellow guardians. Brings the lore to life. Get your rock, off my map.

I think if Bungie makes Grimoire for Toland's Journals, they should make it like the story "Flowers for Algernon," in it's form. I'm liking the basic idea of that.
that was a great book, that would be a cool little touch to see him slowly degrade as a person.
Would be awesome if we could choose to become corrupt and use those really dark concept versions of the original subclasses. Just a thought
I'll openly admit to being a "corrupted" guardian. I find the Darkness bares more information and insight than the Traveler, the Speaker, and those who follow them. *cough* *cough* FACTIONS *cough*
+Cryo Ape factions right now aren't competing at all. Just are there with no purpose in the game, other than to get unique gear.
+CujoSuki um shaders?
what if your actions and weapon/armour choices effected your overall darkness rank and if your rank was too high you were no longer allowed access to the tower. Maybe there could be another social space only available to guardians of the darkness, perhaps there could even be a war between the two factions in which guardians could fight each other, like an iron banner type event.
henrylovespies Stop being overly creative
I've got no idea what you were on about but your voice is comforting like a silky ear worm burrowing into my brain. Keep up the good work mr byf.
Praxic: "We must destroy everything touched by darkness"
Toland: "Excellent, child, you are more dedicated to the sword logic of the darkness than most - cut away that which offends you."
Osiris: "Weigh your actions against their consequences - not all who wander in the darkness are lost"
Player Guardian: "NEW TOYS!!!!!!"
9:27 that misadventure haha.
Guardian corruption is probably my favourite lore topic in all of destiny
This actually seems very in line with Beyond Light. Byf predicting stuff 5 years before it happened!
I guess Toland really wanted that sweet Hive KNAAAWLEDGE.
KNAAAAWLEDGE
Byf is the most wholesome lore channel
Byf i love these videos so much, the lore is so good, like seriously they could really make some amazing movie stuff etc out of these stories and I love the way you portray all the lore! Pls keep doing these because they are amazing to listen to

+1
This needs to happen.
Yes
Hamilton represent ayee
I must agree with this :)
This is now one of my favorite videos you have made! Cool void walker gameplay and stuff that I didn't know about Toland
Also, about understanding the darkness: I think we should understand how the darkness works against us and what laws it works by so that we can best defeat it, but we shouldn't try to use it's practices against itself, since that would only be becoming apart of it.

This is a GREAT video to watch before going to bed
My titan would go rogue in an instant if I was given the chance. I mean, bad guys are awesome
Hell my hunter, titan, and warlock would just turn around and shoot the tower into oblivion. Note it is not due to the fact one uses Red Death.... Okay maybe slightly.
i would just to kill the cryptarch
+Zack Staal hell yeah. I would rather throw master rahool off the tower or killing him with my arc blade
are they really the bad guys? we mindlessly kill everything we see because a guy with a mask who we never has seen his real face told is too because a giant planet told him too.
+Jordan Rivera well sphere
Oh you thought you'd seen the end of Dark Guardians
* Laughs in Stasis
I love watching your lore videos

Great video Byf! Loved your extra take in it adding in your opinion.

I like the idea!
Interesting..... yeeeees?
(I was going for a Variks-type feel)
Rock N' Rollin' Alligator I know this is really late but I didn't even have to press read more to know it was variks
It is interesting, listening to the lore 2 years later when we now know that Rezyl Azir and Dregden Yor are 2 sides if the same coin.
this was something I thought of a while back, "Dark Guardians". I had a thought that these Guardians were either found and are empowered like a normal Guardian by the Darkness or were Guardians like Dredgen Yor who turned their backs on the Light. Use powers very similar to Guardians
That's how I role play in this game. Curiosity of the darkness. I have even picked up their weapons.
Mostly I've repaired my weapons and gear with pieces of theirs. Don't fancy the taken though, revolting creatures.
Get a fucking life bruh
savage
+Cloud Nein as they say here on the Internet: "Are you mad, bro?"
use the death singer gear, obsidian mind and bad juju, trust me you will love that setup
Who would have thought that all these years later we are the guardians wielding for light and dark.
Great vid byf you are the man for these lore videos
YES, another amazing lore video! :D His awesome voice makes it even better!
I guess my guardian is corrupted I need to purse more knowledge about the vex.
Definitely the best video yet
It's so weird revisiting D1 lore videos talking about Yor/Rezyl knowing now that they're one in the same
this would be a great story in a dlc!
Destiny expansion V: The Traitors Rise
I enjoy these videos a lot, keep up the good work
Toland is awesome
also eris has his journal
WHATS UP BYF! Keep up the awesome videos man!
finally someone touches on this subject
I would really love to see new characters in the game whom are corrupted Guardians. Similar to how Eris arrived in the tower as a new character for the Dark Below expansion, we could see these Guardians exile themselves from the tower, and willingly join the darkness.

well, well, well. Look who's using darkness now
The irony of hearing byf say osiris is enlightened right after re-watching this right after watching the new vid about how suspect osiris acting in season of the splicer :P how the turns have tabled!!
Love the video man, you almost put me to sleep. Lol. Keep up the good work!
This was awesome, all there is to say. Love these Lore Videos
Great comment shaqs
I wish there was like a Taken/Corrupted Guardian class, with subclasses based on Taken abilities. That'd be cool
someone actually made a really great concept for darkness subclasses: imgur.com/gallery/hH5pX
I was thinking each class could get a taken subclass. Each with abilities to do with different taken. Maybe warlocks could be based of hive taken. Titan can have fallen and hunters vex
dude that is top
when guardians use super they would become shrouded in darkness, warlocks would fire darkness blast, damaging and blinding in darkness. hunters mimic taken hobgoblins, locking on to multiple targets, firing tracking bullet that explode on contact. titans become an enraged juggernaut, losing the ability to shoot but causing massive melee damage, increased speed and defense
It'd most likely be a warlock since they're the ones that want to get stronger
These are amazing and I wish they could have been more obvious in the game because Destiny has a good story you just have to dig to find it
this is so much like Warhammer 40k. chaos seeps in when you are weak. it seeps in when you want knowledge.
thank you for choosing Seattle children's hospital Byf! its people like you that allow my little brother and I to get our kidney transplants. thank you!
tolland is my favorite guardian. such a boss
0:15 Oh, you're using Bad Juju, otherwise known as the best pulse rifle in North Korea. [Insert Kim Jong Un meme here]
I love that gun to ^^
Yes
Have you ever thought of making a discord server? So people can just chat about destiny and talk about lore and stuff.
Your voice is amazing for this
Anyone else getting a lot of video suggestions for Lands of Lore II: Guardians of Destiny?
Hey Byf, new listener just recently. Bringing up the guardian corruption and how they classify it. the skins /gear on this character look great.

It would kind of make sense. A titan's core purpose is to defend the city. They don't have as many personal goals.
Evil guardians aren't the worst thing there is we need to watch out for the taken tower robots
2:42
This is like the ego of the Jedi
I wonder if Toland will be present in the next seasons, or at least in the lore. His input would be quite interesting.
beyond light says hi to you all.
I earnestly enjoyed that
This would be such a great expansion!

Coming here after shadowkeep and beyond light is pretty interesting!
Guardians wielding the darkness.
Beyond light:
I expected Byf to talk about the mad guardian who wielded Red Death. Though, there's not much information so I expected he wouldn't talk about it
I would love a raid that has you going against the last city and the traveler.
That video got me thinking that maybe fighting corrupt guardians could be destiny 3
If we got to pick to be evil or good I would be evil just seems like you would look badass and be way more powerful
And then get nerfed into the ground
I wouldn't doubt some time soon Toland would be a strike or raid boss.
i feel like the vex play a bigger part than all the of our enemies, and the exo stranger possibly possesing vex technology will play a big part in the destiny expansions/games to come
Sounds like what we just saw with Uldren Sov
my biggest question is where do you consider the line to be? Logically the less knowledge you have of your enemy the lesser your chance of defeating said enemy will be. So where is the equilibrium?....the perfect balance of understanding of both darkness and light?
BTW i love this destiny lore, you do an amazing job with your videos! :)
I see all these gameplay videos and think - "Damn, everything looks so fast!" I feel like I play the game too slowly and patiently.
I love your lore videos, but I'd find it super helpful if you could include a list of relevant grimoire cards/item descriptions in the video description. I'd like to read them all for myself and see what conclusions I come to. :)
They really need to make a way for the player to become one of the 'corrupted' guardians. That would be awesome.
Love your vids! And a very interesting topic. :-)
Byf you should do a lore video on if Cayde could really be Rasputin
I do hope in the future that Bungie will give us the option to use the darkness (giving us new subclasses) being exiled from the Tower and join with different factions, and you can decide how "corrupt" you can be, if you fully embrace the darkness you can never go back into the light.
Except it turns out you can wield the darkness without being corrupted and abandoning the light.
