Deftones damn near broke up…the rest of the band pushed as this was the last song on the album…..and Chino wrote these lyrics in the most pain and turmoil he’d ever felt over the band. He thought it would be the last song they wrote together, so it was his farewell

Saints Row II was actually my first introduction to Deftones with this song. I had never heard anyone sing quite like Chino and even as a kid it just captivated me every time I heard it on the game’s radio. Fast forward years later I was watching the movie Law Abiding Citizen and there’s a scene where Engine No.9 was playing and I had no idea what the song was so I looked it up and couldn’t believe that the same band that made THIS song made THAT one. Now here it is 2022 and I’ve listened to every Deftones album, even checked out B-Sides and Rarities, and had hoped to see them when they came to Philly for their tour. Fireal was one of the first songs I learned on the guitar, as well as Genesis (Still in the infancy stages of playing). I’ve grown a deep love for them and they’re still one of the most unique bands I’ve ever heard in my life.

The lyrics to this song we’re written during the time Deftones almost broke up. Chino wrote the lyrics thinking they would be the last with the band. “There’s a hole in the earth….I’m out,” we’re the last words he wrote for that album, and assumed would probably be the very last as the frontman to one of the best bands to ever exist. They were meant to be a farewell. Thank goodness cooler heads prevailed ❤

The first time i've heard this song i cried, it gave me this feeling of the earth going to an end by a meteorite or something and the entire human race looking at the sky seeing it coming and accepting it, like "this is the end" and trascending in a way.
I've never watched the video cause my connection with this song is so strong and in my head it means a lot of things that I think represents me.
This is my favourite song of all time for various reasons, I think it's everything Nu-Metal can be, it's the evolution of that. I've always think that nu-metal could be something more, touch different emotions and be a step further from where it was. That changed the day I listened to this album.

Alright not that anyone cares but this song means so much to me. I remember being a teenager struggling with what I realise now was depression, but didn't realise at the time. I've always been good with words but whenever it comes to describing how I feel when I'm depressed I can't even string a sentence together. Just can't seem to articulate how I feel. But this song sums it up so perfectly ; there's a hole in the earth, I'm out. It's so simple but powerful. God I love Deftones.

It did the same for me as a kid.. I found out later in life that I have bipolar depressive disorder, and at the time that I was listening to this song frequently i had a bad opioid addiction. I'd eat a few percs, sit outside and watch the stars as this album played on repeat over and over.. all my worried melted away and I forgot about my depression while I'd be listening to this song.
It honestly probably stopped me from doing some really stupid things. I got my BPD under control a couple of years ago and kicked the opioids about 10 years ago, and this song still nearly brings a tear to my eye.

This is when I really became a Deftones fan. They're an incredible band and they're a breath of fresh air from a lot of the bullshit that is topping the charts these days

I love deftones so much, this album was with me thru some shit about 14 years ago. It hurts to listen to this album sometimes but it will always be my favorite. I finally got to see them a handful of years ago. And now my 14 year old likes them, and her favorite song is cherry waves ❤

This is one of the first Deftones songs that got me hooked to the band. I went thru much of my adolescent years with this band, and their music has helped me so much thru the phases of life. From love to drugs and regretful decisions. I can only wish that people see life as the greatest gift. Btw i always come back to this song when i think that my friends are stupid because they all lack taste sometimes.
legitimately a staple of saints row, nothing compares to blowing through cities and past bridges in saints row 2 while listening to this song, the two just go together hand and hand.

TheGero95 of course Deftones has drug and sex references, but their lyrics aren't like "big booty hoes, or I wanna fuck that bitch all day" and shit like that.. Their sexual lyrics are well passionate like Beauty School or Digital Bath. Their drug related lyrics aren't like "I wanna smoke weed all day (like some rap or hip hop songs just all like that), or I'm in love with the coco song" Their drug lyrical content is well shallow, more like he talks about it than bragging of that's all they do all day like in rap songs.

Jesse Morales I won't comment on any genre specifically as i listen to almost all of 'em but being a hardcore deftones fan , I think their music needs to be heard more . it's not that they aren't famous or anything but you can't compare their fanbase to the fucked up commercial music that comes out these days like 1D and its like. Yet I think its good in a way, atleast these guys haven't started making commercial music like others . The new album is gonna be dope as fuck !!

I love Saturday Night Wrist as an album. It shows the band's more melodic, experimental, and slower stuff while also representing what the band was going through at the time. Especially with songs like this one and Rivierè.

This song is there when I'm depressed, happy, given up, upset, on the verge of tears, & now, reminding me of when I was slowly losing my happiness, & becoming this person I am not supposed to be. It either always hurts, or reaches into me to calm me down.

The first time I heard this song was the night of October 21, 2006.I didn’t know it then but this song would hold a specific and special meaning. That next morning, the 22nd, I’d pull up to my house after spending the night at a friends house only to be greeted with my whole entire family outside in the front yard waiting for me. My mom told me my sister Was in a fatal car wreck. I don’t remember much after on that day but looking back, It’s like Deftones knew I was going to need this song at that time. I know this song probably isn’t about losing someone but not only was there a hole in the Earth, there was also a hole in my heart.
