How DEFTONES Changed Music Forever! I talk about the entire history of Deftones including: Chino Moreno, their early years and iconic albums like "Around The Fur" & "White Pony," how they transcended nu-metal and brought shoegaze into metal; the death of Chi Cheng; and their influence on newer bands like Spiritbox, Loathe and Sleep Token.

I needed this video. Im like the biggest deftones fan ever.
@Insignia that’s impossible, because I am.
Why not do an expose on Incubus who have evolved and who changed their sound a lot more than Deftones have. Incubus are not everyone's cup of tea but have massive albums and are there any bands who really sound like them? Do Incubus have a specific sound seeing as they have changed so much through all there albums also they good friends of Deftones.
Your takes are some of the worst on the internet regarding music. You casually dismiss awesome bands while fawing over pop-punk. It's detestable.
wooow, so Mr. "Ill never do a 'deftones' video" has done a deftones video! thanks man!
One of the craziest things I've ever seen at a show was Chino noticing a guy in the front row just not feeling the Deftones performance. He asked the guy what he'd rather hear and the guy said Morbid Angel. The band laughed and broke into a f*cking Morbid Angel song just for him! Hahahaha. What?! Who does that?! Deftones won over the entire venue immediately!
That’s insane, so bad ass they just wiped that out !!
hahaha what year did it happen?!
Need footage of this please
Yeah I'd love to see that
That’s dope
Deftones are special to me, I'm a music whore Deftones touched my soul in so many ways, I was bullied so badly in middle school being black in a majority black school because I listen to them, folks didn't understand but till this day I'm finding songs from them that I never heard.
xxxtentacion probs felt the same way, he was a fan of metal and definitely incorporated it into his music. I get that black people aren't commonly metal fans, but don't let that put you in a restriction of music taste. Be who you want.
You know how many white boys listen to only rap. It’s sad who cares if your black pink or purple Deftones are the most unique band ever and anyone who doesn’t like them is just missing out
Check out "Teething" "Boys Republic" if you've never heard them. Also "Lovers" is my absolute favorite b side by them ever!!!
I remember running into the only black dude in high school back in the day ane he loved Killswitch and other metal like stuff. He got bullied but man he was the coolest! Anywho, keep on keepin on
Around the Fur is still probably my all time favorite album release. So catchy, never loses its ‘cool’ factor, never felt dated even almost 26 years onward from its release. Album just RIPS. So melodic and hypnotic, catchy, heavy/angry af and just so solid.
boc pfp, we love to see it
I still listen to it regularly. Its nostalgic af.
For me Around the fur and White Pony are on par
I'm in the camp of Deftones doesn't have a bad album. I love that they do something new all the time and can't be pigeonholed into one box. And I love that they do what they want and don't let the pressure to do what's popular get to them. They have their own space in the music world and nobody else can take that space. Both Gore and 0hms were fantastic albums imo. I think they showed awesome progression while also feeling nostalgic in places. I'll never forget what this band means to me.
Never understood the gore hate. Acid hologram and Rubicon come to mind as fantastic tracks as well as some others. I don't find the production to be bad as well.
Saturday Night Wrist is the album that I never got into. Gore is good and I love Ohms.
I don’t think gore really gets hated on, because saying something is the worst Deftones album isn’t saying it’s a bad album, It’s just because they have so many albums that are so good front to back that they had such a high standard for themselves that anything below that people are going to complain about, which is a good trait for a band to have
They don’t have a bad album they might have a couple skippable tracks but only a handful in their whole discography in my opinion
You are absolutely right
I love Saturday Night Wrist, such an underrated album.
Dude same I love that album and will always have a special place in my heart.
Such a masterpiece, truly a gem one of my all time favorite albums
Agree. Was the first of their albums I properly listened to and I have to say it's awesome precisely for it's variety. I seem to have a knack for favouriting artists least popular/ most divisive albums. Like The Cure, my favourite album of theirs is The Top which is sooo sonically scattered. But I love that!! I want things to be switched up a bit. Cannot stand hearing the same thing over and over anyway. I think it shows there's experimentation happening and like a genuine confidence in switching things up.
As someone who listens to weird, unique and experimental music, Deftones is the only band that in a way gave me kinda ethereal vibes and that high and ascension you get when you listen to certain music
Deftones are one of the only nu-metal acts that the elitist metalheads not only respect, but will actively listen to. That definitely says something.
Deftones are one of the few bands from middle school that I will still listen. Great band.
In the mid 2 late 90s u could say the same thing about Tool.
If you haven't seen it, Chino covered behind the wheel by Depeche mode with the Dillinger Escape Plan live.
@Joe Santos at my high school, Deftones and Tool were by far the two most popular bands in the 90’s and early 2000’s, I graduated in 2001….I remember Aenema and Around the Fur being released in ‘96 and ‘97….. and as far as everyone I knew was concerned, At that point, those two bands could do no wrong
I must DEMAND another track featuring Maynard. His voice compliments their style so well.
Passenger is one of my favourite deftones tracks, Maynard was a good choice for vocals
@LP maynard has such a distinctive voice and impressive range, it sounds so damn good with Chino’s voice singing the verses in his airy and eery freestyle vocal patterns. I can’t disagree that it’s just simply the best 🥰
Fuck. Yes.
I have listened to DEFTONES every single day of my life since 1996 and every song still gets me!!🤯
Yes!! 🙌
You’ve been listening to the tones for as long as I’ve been alive 🤯
shit. i've seen them live twice and I don't do that. If you've literally done that, regardless of how good they are, I'd be bored assless of them lol.
The thing I love about the Deftones is they are mood music. You can listen to songs like Digital Bath and be thrown into this melancholy haze or When Girls Telephone Boys (imo the heaviest song they have ever wrote) and just have your face ripped right off. This is a great retrospective Finn, I know your not a fan boi but props for giving them the respect.
Poltergeist is a heavier mood to me, WGTB is cold though!
you're so right!
I saw Deftones in concert with Gojira in May of last year. I've liked Deftones forever, but I was admittedly scared that the concert was going to be boring, and I was honestly more excited to see Gojira for the second time. I was SO wrong. They played SO many of their heavier songs, had a good mix of the "hits," and they were so interactive with the audience. I seriously could not have been happier that I made the decision to see them, because it was legitimately a life-changing concert for me. I have so much respect for this band.
I was at that concert in LA ! Such a great show, first time seeing Gojira and I was blown away. It’s hard to decide who had a better set that night. Deftones definitely did not disappoint
Describing the live experience of Deftones as life changing is very accurate.
I will never forget seeing them with Thrice & Pelican on the Taste Of Chaos somewhere around ‘07 at the San Jose Events Center…
Their set was untouchable & I’ve never witnessed that again!
Likewise! My wife and I attended the Cincy show. We paid $500 to get up front and I would have paid double. I still glow a little thinking about that show!
@Bryant C I went to the la show too I wasn’t expecting them to play very good and was expecting chinos vocals to be bad but I was very wrong they were very good for not playing for a year or two.
Deftones is one of my favorite bands of all time. what I love most about them is how dynamic their music is. they can be really heavy, really chill, and usually both at the same time. Stephen’s guitar tone is damn near perfect - incredibly lush with the right amount of crunch for the groovy riffs and the clarity for those big spacey chords. Abe’s hard hitting drums, Chi’s smooth bass lines, and of course Chino’s incredibly unique melodies and vocal delivery. The music is just the perfect combination of light and dark. heavy, emotional - literally gives me chills.
The thing I like about Finn is that he may not be a fan of a band, but still he can appreciate their impact and positive sides 🙏
Exactly!! That’s why I enjoy his content so much and he inspires me to express my appreciation for the influence of bands and genres I don’t even like ^^
Unfortunately, not really. Especially if you watch his 2nd channel
ghost mall Agreed
Finn really surprised me on this one! Thought he was waiting until the end to shit a little on them, but he remained respectful from start to finish. I love it! ❤
Love the Deftones, “My own summer” on my daily play list💯💯
The only band whose music slaps the same way it did for me in 8th grade.
Absolutely timeless.
Crazy that no one took initiative during the SNW writing and recording, and it’s still an amazing album. Rivière🖤
Digital Bath, Change, Sextape, Diamond Eyes, Rocket Skates, Risk, Rosemary, Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away), Hole In The Earth, Beware, Cherry Waves, Xerces, Rivière just to name a few are some of my favs. Honestly IMO Saturday Night Wrist as a whole is a great album i can't get enough of. But all of their albums are amazing
The self titled Deftones album is so underrated. It’s a great album and I don’t understand why it’s considered mediocre.
i’ve seen this band perform live about 8 times live (since middle school! i’m 38 now!) and they are amazing. plus just the NICEST guys on the planet. when i met them for the first time after a show in phoenix, chino thanked my mom for staying up late to drive us to and home from the show!
39 here and seen them 8 shows...in san antonio, tx we were moshing and one person fell and everyone crumbled on one another ...chino and stopped the show and said we all here for one another! Thought was gonna die and everyone helped each other! Amazing!!
That’s awesome. I’m 37. Been a huge fan since they dropped WP. They are a magical band.
Deftones isn't just a band. It's a whole vibe.
💯💯💯💯💯💯
Almost a genre in itself now.
Well said 💯
It's a whole bop, fam, no caps 🔥
sigma male vibes
Ever since their self-titled album, they've started to have an increasingly mystical and esoteric vibe to their music. You can hear traces of it in the White Pony. You can Reeeeeealy hear it in Ohms.
White Pony was an evolutionary leap in my musical journey and sounds just as fresh now as it did back in 2000. A Work of Art.
Deftones haven't made a single bad album, period. I hope they release EROS in memory of Chi. The thing I love the most about them is that they have been able to evolve and thrive at it. By far my favorite band, ever!
It took me years to get into them but ever since I’ve just loved their sound. I can’t explain it but their music just makes you feel so many things. One of my favorite bands of all time.
“We’ve never just been a metal band, we’ve never just been an alternative band, we’ve always just been us. We feel comfortable in never having to choose.”
Chino Moreno, 2020 ( Deftones/Team Sleep/PALMS/Saudade/†††Crosses)
Koi No Yokan is a masterpiece. I believe it’s their best album. It has every sound defying aspect of the band in spades. Beautiful, moody and aggressive riffs combined with Chino’s beautiful harmonies makes it an A+ in my book. Such an amazing record.
Deffo in my top 3
it is a masterpiece on par with be quiet and white pony for sure, might not be the best but its tied.
KNY is their masterpiece
YES!!! Exactly, I've been saying this for years. It's honestly even better than white pony, usually regarded as their best but in my opinion Koi is PERFECT beginning to end.
Amen
The Deftones are the modern equivalency of David Bowie. Hard to define where they land in greatness because it is so strange. It's like every other musician is playing baseball and Bowie and the Deftones are playing basketball. Not everyone gets it, but if you do, then the more you listen to them the more amazing it reveals to be. Is Bowie the greatest ever? Maybe. Are the Deftones the best band of the last 25 years? Maybe. Hard to say.
Nothing compares to Deftones. They created there own space of sound like Tool did also. Fav nu metal band of all time 💜
Have loved them since 96. Love each album, and am happy that they have maintained their "underground" popularity. Everyone loves them, but at the same time, no one knows who they are.
I actually really like Saturday Night Wrist.
i disagree, nowadays they are so popular some die hard fans are gate keeping them from newer generations
Adrenaline was earth shifting for us when it dropped in high school. It was the coolest thing I'd ever heard and I played it to death. Sort of liked Around the Fur then never listened to them again.
I don't get why so many people still disregard Deftones. They have such a deep discography of incredible music.
Despite the struggles the band had at the time, Cherry Waves is an absolute masterpiece, a contender for best song imo
Unpopular opinion but. Saturday is one of my three favorite albums. Beware, Cherry Waves, and Riviere are flawless.
Kimdracula is my second favourite after Cherry Waves off Saturday Night Wrist
Beware is a dope song. And the break down at the end always almost snaps my neck.
The whole album is my third favorite behind ATF and White Pony. I thought Saturday Night Wrist is their most divisive album and Gore is the one most agree on being their weakest, i personally do for sure.
When you know, what a terrible time that was for deftones, at this album came out.
It's crazy how good that record ist.
Deftones has never done bad stuff in their career.
What a Band.
Around the Fur ha such a beautiful vibe. Organic. To tape. No crazy edits or auto tune. You can hear the fun they were having making it, I think.
My favorite band of all time! Every album has its own aura to it, proving their versatility and endless creativity in both chaotic and calm environments.
Deftones will forever have a special place in my heart no matter what. My 7 year old little boy absolutely loves them just as I did when I was a kid. He wants to go see them in concert so bad but he’s just so little but next tour I might have to crack. It would be the highlight of his life.
Good to hear Chino feels “Around the Fur” is his fav Deftones album.. I love it too, “My Own Summer” remains to this day as my fav song by this phenomenal band.
I was 16 when "White Pony" came out. Still remember that album clearly.
Massive respect to Deftones for still going strong for as long as they have.
Massive disrespect to deftones for still going
Fun fact - there was this band called "far" in the 90s and the lead singer helped with and wrote most of be quiet and drive with Chino. He toured with hopesfall and coheed and cambria in 2000 or 2001 . He played acoustic and had an r2d2 shaped drum machine. He was such an awesome dude. They still produce music together sometimes
Call it nostalgia, but around the fur is by far my favorite. It was also the best time to see them live
For me, Deftones have been the most lasting metal band I've listened to over the last 21 years or so. I think they have a great ethereal, emotional quality to them, a unique sound, beauty, and edge/hardness.
I think the regular album releases definitely helped, as new material has continually come out, as opposed to a band like Tool, which took much more time between albums. Another thing is that to me, Deftones truly retained their sound over albums, in a good way, and didn't devolve like basically every band does over time, and with success.
However, they release so many albums, and well I'm just lazy I guess, I haven't even delved into their recent releases of Gore, or Ohms.
I was late to the party for Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan as well, and I love Saturday Night Wrist, and those aforementioned albums also.
I look forward to sinking into the newer albums and finding more tunes that set my soul out into yonder.
My favorite songs (not a definitive or ranked list) are: Hole In The Earth, Minerva, Diamond Eyes, Entombed, Beauty School, Beware, Cherry Waves, Hexagram, Needles and Pins... okay this list is getting longer than I intended. haha
Around the Fur will always be my favorite. That album is raw from start to secret song finish.
Dude nailed it with the Loathe mention. They sound like if Deftones got heavier after the self titled. But still unique in their own way. Saw them open for Glassjaw in the UK earlier this year and absolutely killed it live.
White Pony is definitely the best sexy time album of all time. It has the perfect blend of sensual softness with raw aggression that flows well into each other. Highly recommended sexy time music.
Exactly. I was shocked when Fynn once said Deftones is for Incels. In Fact for me it is the complete opposite.
id say around the fur is what you described, but u cant go wrong with white pony
@erion d also agree on this. It's the better album but white pony is right behind it
@MikeAngelo047 around the fur is one of the albums i consider perfect tbh, not one unskippable track
Phenomenal band. One of the few bands I consider myself very lucky saying I've seen them play live but yet sad that I've only seen them once.
Awesome video! My first concert was the Summer Sanitarium tour in 2003 when they toured with Metallica. We showed up late and walked into the stadium while they were playing Minerva. I'll never forget that. I became a huge fan later on, but they were literally the first band I heard live when I was 14 years old. :)
Diamond Eyes, White Pony and Koi No Yokan are 3 absolutely amazing albums
Chino damn near shoved the mic all the way into my gullet for the last line of Lotion in pdx one night. 😏
The energy they had live, especially those first two albums, had to be experienced to be believed. Amazing 👏
I honestly have never rated Deftones. Thought they were one of the most overreated bands of all time.
Then I saw them live. Last week.
Instant convert. What a vibe, what energy. What a show! Absolutely tight ass band as it gets. Even though metal's not my thing, they are so great at what they do.
My teenage years were spent completely immersed in Deftones. I even got a Deftones tattoo on my wrist as soon as I turned 18. I went to every single show when they came to Dallas and also supported Chino’s side project. I remember once when they were playing at a smaller venue here, I pushed my way to the front and was able to experience Chino’s amazing voice a mere 4 feet away. I was completely captivated. I haven’t had a band or artist captivate me like that since
Saw Loathe in concert last week, great atmosphere! Their sound is quite similar to Deftones and stage performance is pretty good!
This^^ I hear so much Deftones in Loathe, huge fan of their work
I actually never listened to Deftones before 2018. But my wife told me that I needed to listen to them, and I can say it was a life changing experience. Thank you Sam.
My absolute favorite band of all time!!! I've been a fan since Adrenaline and although many bands have come into my life since, not one has come close to stealing the #1 spot in my heart. Deftones is perfection and I personally dont think they've ever put out a bad album. I've loved every single one 🖤
When they got big in the 90s they instantly had that longevity feel. They were thrown into classic immediately. No one argued.
One of my favorite parts of white pony is chino's duet with maynard in passenger, their voices fit amazingly well together
I can kinda get why some people absolutely can't stand it, but I genuinely think they're one of the best and most original band in metal music.
I don't even consider them metal even at their heaviest
Metal? Not really. Alternative/Hard rock more like it.
@LeadMe2TheBlisslmao Hexagram/ needles n pins? As hard rock? Nvr heard a hard rock band scream so hard, Thats a good one
@Papi Chulo laughs in korea and elite 🤔
@Commodore 64 So why are you giving your opinion about a band you literally know absolutely nothing about?
Deftones are "Alternative Metal". They are absolutely definitely Metal. Do you consider TOOL metal? Deftones are heavier than TOOL every day of the week.
Radiohead is Alternative Rock. Soundgarden is Alternative Rock. Deftones aren't even close to those bands in style. They are Metal.
Alternative Metal.
This is like one of the few bands I can throw a playlist on just about any day and it always just sounds purrrfect.
Its a very special band. When i like a band there is almost always an era that i like more than the rest of their work. most of my favourite songs usually come from 1-2 albums. Not with these guys, all the albums have at least 1 song that is very close to my heart, and that does not happen often. These guys are a timeless classic.
PS. Wait they are still active? that means i havent missed seeing them live there is still a chance!
I'll never forget being 13 in 1998 and borrowing a friend's Around the Fur cd to help me fall asleep at a youth group retreat and being blown away by every single song on that album. Been a big fan of them ever since and seen them live a bunch of times and Abe's drumming has been one of my biggest influences in my own style
Had to hide that album from my parents when I first got it (also at age 13 in 1998). Abe is a monster on the kit, and the drum production on AtF is just solid.
They were the second coming of the Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine. Bands which I would've never known existed had it not been for Chino and Co. Around the Fur is still one of my favorite albums of all time.... Long Live Sactown!!! RiP Chi.
been listening to deftones since 02, I was like 9 years old, been loving each album ever since, I consider them as one of the most consistent bands out there, not in terms of sound but in quality, hope they come to my country soon, wanna see them again
I really enjoy these retrospective type videos. As someone who doesn't really devote a lot of time to browsing new music, your comparisons to other bands in these videos almost always leads me to check out a newer band I never would have. Most times I end up really enjoying them, thanks for all your work putting these videos together, it helps us old millennials to not turn into crusty "get off my music lawn you dang kids" types.
Thank you for watching!
@The Punk Rock MBA finn, only you can get us casual metal/rock fans deeper into more cool shit! 🤙🏽 Seriously! I've been jamming Marauder, and Turmoil and other bands like that cus of your channel
As a lifelong Deftones fan was impressed to hear him compare Sleep Token, Spiritbox, Loathe and also The Weeknd who have all ended up as my most played artists for the last few years. Makes total sense.
please don't call millenials old....it makes my gen x ass feel ancient....
@CroulantRoulant lmao well I'll hit 40 in a few months, Gramps. At least you guys are kind of the "fly under the radar" group in the generation wars. Although to teens I assume we're all boomers anyways.
I had just laid down for bed, had videos playing and My Own Summer came on...I literally sat straight up in bed, put my glasses back on and watched in awe. That entire album is AMAZING...
Their song writing has always set them apart. I remember waiting for Around the Fur.
I fucking love Deftones. I got into them precisely because their music (well, not all of it but a lot of it) just couldn't easily be shoehorned into one genre. In fact, even though I know logically what each song's genre is, I can still hear TONS of influence from other genres. The triphop influence did a number on Deftones in the best way possible. Their konami code song is completely instrumental and basically a lovechild between metal, rock, and triphop, and I LOVE IT.
They weren’t afraid to grow with their audience. That’s what makes them great.
I had an experience a number of years ago that included getting a chance to meet and hang out with the band for a few hours after a show in Portland. They have been my favorite band since I was a kid and I was honestly a little anxious, don’t meet your heroes and all that.
Turned out to be one of the most incredible nights I’ve ever had. They were super groovy, laid back and humble. I took the opportunity to fan boy a little and when I thanked Stephen I started it with something like, “I know you probably hear this all the time, but…” and he responded by saying, “you know, I do hear that stuff pretty often but it never means any less.” It was so classy and really felt honest.
It's pretty unique how popular the Deftones are yet, still feel to be underground in a way. MTV and Mainstream Radio never really accepted them and I like it that way. Amazing Live🔴
Seen them in Indianapolis over the summer. His voice isn't quite what it used to be but it was a very good show anyway.
Best live shows I’ve ever been to
To be fair, Deftones did get airplay on mainstream pop stations roughly from Around the Fur to self-titled
Not only did Back to School get played on MTV, they were featured guests on TRL (the lamest show on MTV at the time) as a result of its popularity. They even re-released their best album within months of its original release with a new opening track (Back To School) so they can sell more records. If that isn't selling out.
Kris Frederick
It’s Mind blowing. They are literally one of the most accessible metal bands without forcing it
love deftones. Since I seen the band be introduced in one of my favorite anime movies, I have been in LOVE. KNY has been my favorite album since.
Deftones always felt more relatable and human... Less gimmicky. Definitely a gateway band between genres.
Let us not forget, A DOPE ASS LIVE SHOW!!! Chino is all over the venue vybing w their fans...they'll always be my favorite band!!
3.Koi No Yokan
2.White Pony
1.Diamond Eyes
R.I.P. Chi Cheng
Deftones have some of the gnarliest breakdowns in hard rock. Bloody Cape and Beware comes to mind.
Something that was overlooked: their song, My Own Summer was also featured in The Matrix soundtrack, and that movie was hugely popular and influential. And the soundtrack itself sold a lot of allbums. That was actually how I first heard them was owning that.
White Pony is such a game changer! Very ahead of its time and has nothing but memorable songs. I’d say it’s easily their peak musically and it’s one of the greatest metal albums out there!
Yeah but I absolutely hate “back to school”, “elite” and the overrated “change”
No it wasn't they copied tool like every other band they even said it they seen took and it changed their lives
ghost mall Check out Koi No Yokan. It's such an atmospheric and beautiful, moody album that puts me in this nostalgic bittersweet trance every time I listen to it. If you aren't into the heavier stuff, that's the album I recommend checking out.
It's far from a "metal album" though. That's almost as bad as calling Linkin Park metal 🤣F*ck genres though, it's all about the music.
@LeadMe2TheBliss right might as well call them shoe gaze or rap all the same
Great discussion, thanks for this in-depth look into a multi-faceted band and their organic effect on the genre. Extra props for the Blackgaze reference🤘🏻💀🤘🏻
When Girls Telephone Boys is their heaviest song all in all I think. I think Bloody Cape is pretty close too. There is a lot of super heavy stuff on their self-titled, but I think When Girls Telephone Boys is their heaviest. It’s so aggressive and brutal. Literally my favorite song ever.
I remember seeing deftones open for life of agony and anthrax at the agora Cleveland. still one of the best shows I've seen. loved all 3 bands since.
One of the craziest pits I’ve ever seen that wasn’t some underground hardcore show. Was in the field with the deftones on the MainStage at OzzFest 99 at the E-Center in Camden. One of the few pits in my life in which I just said to myself, “I’m sitting this one out.”
Amazing live band.
Deftones have been my favorite band since 5th grade back in '96. Massive influence on every aspect of my life, appreciate this vid.
As a Deftones fanatic I want to thank you very much for making this video. You've expressed in the past that you've never been too impressed by their music or fan base so I totally was not expecting this. Also just wanted to add as far as influences there are multiple artists who have taken their name from Deftones songs, such as Knife Party and Kim Dracula.
I remember the deftones startup days when they were more funk/punk than anything. They had, what I considered at the time, to have a great sound. They would play shows around Sac with bands like Funky Blue Velvet and other bands from the time and era. When they started moving more towards a metal style I lost sight of them. Watching this video makes me want to revisit them. Thanks for the content!
Deftones is imo the most dynamic band ever. Crosses just released many songs which is fucking amazing aswell
I love Deftones. They have evolved and experimented so much.
Saw them open for Pantera and Sepultura in 95 bought Adrenaline after hearing Engine #9 so I knew who there were at the time! The band has come a long way!
As a relatively new fan of the band (Ohms era) going through their discography on the whole is a trip and you just get what you get. When I first jumped in it was Diamond Eyes and the self-titled that kept me on board, but as time went on it was albums like Saturday Night Wrist and Gore that eventually floated to the top for me. And as for their early records, I actually enjoy the straightforward post-hardcore of Adrenaline the most. I sometimes feel like I ended up having a weird perspective on things but with a discography this diverse there really isn't any right or wrong answers, you just get what you get.
As much as I love Deftones, I have to brace for impact when I see their name on your channel lol
edit- muuuch more positive than I was expecting. gg, Mr. Male Standard.
Exactly. Finn craps on them every time. I can’t trust this title.
I know he doesn’t care for Deftones but I think most of his criticism is more about Deftones fans.
Deftones are hands down the greatest band I've ever heard. Hooked since their first release, I've grown old with them. I'm so happy they're now getting so much recognition for their catalogue.
Deftones is one of my favorite bands because the fact that they are so experimental!!! I believe Chino definitely invented the sadcore vocal style way way before Lana and Billie Ellish came into the picture
I've never been embarrassed telling people the first album I ever bought was Around the Fur.
I remember listening to lots of hardcore/metalcore late 90's and all the kids loved the Deftones. We had their cd's as well. Then, reading that Deftones were listening to Zao's Where Blood and Fire Brings Rest made us happy, as that's one of my favorite metalcore album. Great video Finn!
Much respect for this. I know you’re not the biggest fan of them, but this is awesome for us Deftones fanboys/fan girls
As someone who has been there from 'Adrenaline'(I live 45 minutes North of Sacramento), it's amazing to see how huge they've become. I remember seeing them in tiny clubs throughout Sac(Cattle Club!!!) and the crowds would just go out of their minds. Now they're one of the most popular Metal bands out there. It's so great to see. Nothing but respect.
I saw them at the Cattle Club, too! Still have the flyer...they played with Far. Good times.
@Laura Gallegos Nice! Saw a lot of great shows at the Cattle Club. Loved that little place.
Even as far back as 2008, they played some secret club shows all the time. They’ve always had that intimate feel to their shows and overall vibe.
@Brian De L Nice! It's probably been around 10 years or more since I saw them last...Need to remedy that ASAP.
Howdy neighbor!
I been listening to Deftones since 2006 and honestly i see no band like them. THe influence they have had to the music I listen to is crazy. I was not a fan of Gore at first but listening to it years later, its a crazy good album. I personally think Saturday Night wrist will always be my favorite album, as its the one that got me hooked on deftones followed by the self titled album. But I can say that not 1 album is a bad album by any means, they are just different
In 1997, a boy in my art class lent me a copy of Adrenaline, his phone number written on a tiny piece of paper tucked away in the liner notes (I was oblivious back then, so I immediately called to thank him for introducing me to the band rather than say, go to a movie or something, lol). I’ve been a fan ever since.
Meeting Defrones fans is always a little odd, even though I’m one of them. Very passionate, but also convivial and polite about it? Like, it’s a scary fandom, because it’s so politely intense? Like, you either never heard of the band (boo!) or it’s your favorite thing ever? I always forget how many people are fans-it’s always both a complete surprise while also making sense?
Idk, these are just my odd thoughts about it, but I always like to remind metal fans who sneer at them that when it came out, White Pony was the album to play if you brought a girl over and wanted to maybe get laid, because all sorts of girls (even “normies”-which, again both is and isn’t surprising) absolutely loved that shit. (You can also play that album over the 2nd act of Swan Lake, and not only does it absolutely fit, but you can’t convince me Chino wouldn’t be into it 🤷🏽♀️)
So, you finally relented and talked about Deftones. Nice. They've always been the band that really put what it means to be "alternative metal" into perspective, and that's always been what I see as the best thing about them. Like if Korn drove a rift in metal with their experimentation in the 90's, Deftones basically picked up the ball and ran with it. Abe Cunningham is also one of my favorite drummers of all time, that big fill he does towards the end of "Change" (you know which one) is a nuff said moment for that.
White Pony and Diamond Eyes are my favorite albums by them. Still on rotation till this day!
I know you are not the biggest deftones fan, but I love how fair you treat every band in this channel, trying to learn the best lessons. Love your content, keep it up
Deftones is my favourite band. I like how their music changes through times. I started listening to them then I was a teenager and I liked their first albums. And now as I grew up I really enjoy their last albums.
Deftones is always what I say when people ask what my favorite band is. Even if I’m super hyped on something else at the given moment, they’re the band that encompasses everything I love about music.
Love them but everything sounds the same after their self-titled album Deftones.
And not in that good "true to form" consistent way but still with a little expressive variation like we've seen in the past. It's like one continuous single album. Sounds uninspired, like they're just going through the motions, popping them out on routine, "oh, there's another one!". Like it's a chore and you've just got to get through it so that you can do something more stimulating like sitting down.
Ohms is pretty damn good. The most underrated album in my opinion is Koi No Yokan, every song is amazing. I feel like people will appreciate Gore way more in like 10-15 years although it is my personal least favorite.
@Undefined Variable that's not really true at all if you sat down and actually listened to EVERY single song off Saturday Night Wrist, Diamond Eyes, Koi No Yokan, Gore and Ohms- there's a lot of ideas and things they never tried on the first 4 albums. Yes there's songs that sound similar to each other and similar to the first 4, but they did try different sonic ideas, songwriting, and experimented with different styles overall. It doesn't seem like you've really listened to every single one of the albums 5-9, maybe you have and you're entitled to your opinion, I just highly disagree.
I could never get into this band, only their one hit.
They're like Mike Patton, just so unique
Finn one of your best videos ever. I had friends bands play with Deftones before they made it. Deftones has a vibe that has a moments that are stronger as time goes by.
