Leonard "Lenny" Albert Kravitz (born May 26, 1964) is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and actor. Born in New York to TV news producer Sy Kravitz and actress Roxie Roker, Lenny was exposed to the entertainment industry at a young age. Lenny grew up in a musically diverse environment. His childhood was split between Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Los Angeles, leading to his early passion for music, inspired by several genres and seeing The Jackson 5 live. Lenny released his debut album "Let Love Rule" in 1989. This marked the beginning of a career characterized by a blend of rock, funk, reggae, hard rock, soul, and R&B. In 1974, at the age of 10, Lenny relocated to Los Angeles with his parents when his mother landed her role on 'The Jeffersons.' At his mother's urging, he joined the California Boys Choir for three years, where he performed a classical repertoire, and sang with the Metropolitan Opera. It was in Los Angeles that Lenny was introduced to rock music and he taught himself how to play piano and bass. Lenny attended Beverly Hills High School, where his classmates were (future singer/songwriter) Maria McKee, (future actor) Nicolas Cage, and "Slash" (future Guns & Roses guitarist). Through his mother, Lenny is a second cousin of NBC TV weatherman presenter Al Roker. Playing solo and in various bands, he made several attempts to get record deals. However, with record labels still telling him his music was not "black enough" or "white enough", Lenny decided to record an album on his own under the name "Romeo Blue" -- he had met the recording engineer, keyboardist, and bassist Henry Hirsch in 1985 when recording a demo at his Hoboken, New Jersey, recording studio. The two shared an interest in using real instruments and vintage recording equipment, as well as a love of R&B, jazz, and rock. Lenny would go on to collaborate with Hirsch on most of his albums. Lenny began working on his debut album with Hirsch over the next year and a half, with Lenny's father paying for the studio time. Lenny met saxophonist Karl Denson and invited him to play on the song "Let Love Rule". Lenny was so impressed with his playing that Denson played on much of the album. Beginning in the late 1980s, Denson toured with Lenny for five years. In October 1988, after completing most of the recording, Lenny approached friend Stephen Elvis Smith, who had served as the music supervisor on Lisa Bonet's The Cosby Show spin-off 'A Different World.' Smith had also worked with Lenny's mother on the hit sitcom 'The Jeffersons.' Lenny urged Smith to manage his career and assist him in finding a record deal. In less than a month of shopping the recordings, five labels (Warner Bros, Elektra, Geffen, Capitol, and Virgin) were in a bidding war for Lenny. Eventually, a deal was made with Virgin Records in January 1989, and signed by Virgin A&R executive Nancy Jeffries. The label was "excited" about the music he was making, music inspired by his relationship with wife Bonet and their new daughter, Zoe. On Smith's urging, Lenny dropped the name "Romeo Blu"e and reclaimed the "Lenny Kravitz" moniker. About his time as "Romeo Blue", Kravitz said, "Ultimately, it got me back to myself. And when I finally did accept myself for myself, music started flowing out of me."

His first two albums were more 70s album rock with a groove than his later more rocking stuff.
Lenny is gorgeous.
You’ve done Heart performing at Kennedy Center Honors Led Zeppelin. Lenny Kravitz also performed at that tribute. I believe he did “Whole Lotta Love”. Check it out!
Lisa Bonet was on the Cosby Show, and had a part in the movie adaptation of High Fidelity. Years later, there would be a tv adaptation of High Fidelity on Hulu, which starred her and Lenny Kravitz daughter, Zoe.
Lisa Bonet (Crosby Show and some movies) was with him and then with Jason Momoa.
Another interesting thing is Lenny was involved with Vanessa Paradis before she was with Johnny Depp.
Best concert I ever seen think it was his second album Mama Said band was on fire horn section dance moves Lenny is a great song writer and performer.
It's amazing how incredible his vocals are when he sings. It's stunning. I kind of agree about the video setting here. It's kind of a 70s style despite the fact that this song is 90s.
Speaking of 90s and great vocals, you guys should totally check out the singer Des'ree and the song "You Gotta Be"
Lenny Kravitz is so underrated, great reaction.
BTW, many of us have been begging for some TLC, a huge 90's girl group. TLC - "Waterfalls" would be a great start. Give the people what they want.
I second Waterfalls!! ❤
Wow this takes me back to 1990 amazing song! Still sing this everytime I hear him. The 70s were reintroduced in the 90s clothing and music. My mother loved this song because it reminded her when she was a young woman.
