Funny thing about this song. Richard tells the story at his concerts. He wrote it because he wanted to write a story song. Then he put it away thinking it was awful. Finally, one night at home he recorded it so that he wouldn't forget it if he wanted it later. His wife came in and told him he should record it because it was a HIT! He says, "you know just once, us guys want to be right! So, I recorded it to show her it wasn't any good, and it became one of my number 1 hits!"
One of my favourite songs too. The storytelling is just breathtaking and edge-of-your-seat for a song! Richard has such a wonderful (*swoon*) voice as well 🙄🤣
I thought that was him. I had forgotten and then I kept looking at him thinking it was RC. I always think of him from the battery commercial (knock this battery off my shoulder) from the 70s. I cannot remember if it was Duracell?
"Should've Known Better", "Satisfied", "Don't Mean Nothing", "Now and Forever" and "Silent Scream" are all great Richard Marx songs to do next time. You will love "Silent Scream" as it is about how people disrespect the elder generation and the video is amazing. It was directed by Kiefer Sutherland ❤
I love Richard Marx!! His voice is so haunting and beautiful! Such a talented man! Other songs to check out are Don’t Mean Nothing, Should’ve Known Better, Satisfied , Children Of The Night, & Hold On To The Nights!
“Don’t Mean Nothing “ is a behind the scenes look at the record business. Richard also married MTV VJ Daisy Fuentes. I believe they are still married in 2024.
That specific story may not be true, but similar stories play out in small towns all the time. It may not be a murder that happens, but almost always those who are poor (or in this case those who are considered trailer trash) are targeted by law enforcement in those towns. If something goes wrong the first place they go to is where these people live.
I'm SO excited to see another Richard Marx song! I've been waiting forever for another one. You guys have only touched on his slow ones though - which are amazing - BUT he does have an edgier, rockier side as well. Please, please, please check out Should've Known Better, Don't Mean Nothing, and Too Late to Say Goodbye. Lonely Heart is also another one that didn't make it to radio - but it's a personal favourite. BTW - Richard was married to Cynthia Rhodes who played Penny (the blonde in Dirty Dancing - Johnny's first dance partner).
I was 13 or 14 when this song came out and was OBSESSED with it. 2 months ago I saw Richard Marx at Epcot for a concert and the first performance he didn't do Hazard, so I hung around for the 2nd concert and it was the 2nd or 3rd song he did and I left so happy! It's my favorite Richard Marx song and he still performs it so very well!!!
This is my favorite Marx song. THIS is how songs should be. Tell a story, capture the listener. Give them something emotional to be invested in throughout.
This is one of my mums favorite songs, and was one of my dads before he passed, It reminds me alot of him of my childhood. i love Richard marx music especially this song ❤ great reaction video thankyou 😊
Richard Mark started off as a jingles singer and background vocalist. He sang background vocals for Luther Vandross and many other artist.. I met him in 1986 and opened for him on several occasions. After this song came out, he left the industry for many years to raise his family in Chicago. 🕊❤️🎼
Conrad had a great career. I probably remember him best for the mid-70s TV series Baa Baa Black Sheep, about USMC ace Greg Boyington and the squadron of Corsairs he commanded. The real Boyington was a technical advisor on the series.
One of those songs that captures you by surprise? Was never into Richard Marx, but when I heard this song? Wow this is a masterpiece from him. It made me appreciate him more as an artist.
I saw Richard Max in a theatre way back in 1989 (Sydney Australia) and he performed a rendition of Beatles songs in acapella. This man can bloody sing, sing and sing some more. I've never forgotten the experience to this day!
He really through a curve ball with this song and story. I can't recall all these years later if he ever resolved the story, or even if there was a story. But it was a surprising enormous hit. He has never stopped writing or recording and many of his songs have been hits for other major artists. His own stuff remains at a very high level of quality, and he still has the pipes! Saw him a couple of times at The Royal Albert Hall back in the day.
Yes I am so happy you did this one! This is in my top 3 Richard Marx songs! The whole story of the song, the video, it hooks you in and makes you think, it’s just perfect! You can have endless conversations about who really killed Mary. Fun fact: when Marx wrote this, he had no intention of releasing it. But he played it for his (now ex) wife and she told him he had to! And he had no idea it would become as big as it did! You should do Don’t Mean Nothing next, it’s another song that tells a story and more up tempo!
Always Loved Richard Marx.... I have one of his CDs! Really Nice Song... not one I've heard over-the-air before, but on my CD. Great Choice, You Guys! :) PS- Have a Great Week!
Another perfect beautifully written song by Richard Marx, The story line and video draws you into the movie so irresistible and appealing and as Jay mentioned his voice is perfect for the song.
I was a teen in the 90s at the height of his popularity... I never considered myself a fan until I was older. I never realized how many good songs he has!
I love this singer so much. He’s my summertime smooth crooner I save for strictly between June-August every year. I recently saw a clip of him singing live from this year and he genuinely still can sing exactly like this. I hope I get to see him live, he just released a new album so fingers crossed! ❤❤❤
You can never go wrong with a great ballad sung with a voice as smooth as silk and amazing musical talent. This song really pulls on the heart strings. One of my all-time favorites.
Love love love Richard Marx! I went to see him in concert with a friend of mine in NC. The entire stadium was singing "Right Here Waiting" along with him. While he was performing, he actually stopped singing and listened to us sing to him. Sometime later, maybe a year later, I saw him being interviewed and he stated that he was humbled and surprised that the audience was literally singing to him. so cool!
This song was an unexpected and incredible departure for Richard Marx from his "usual" sound and song themes. I much preferred his up-tempo songs to his ballads, but this one was something else entirely. The lyrics... the tempo...the instrumentation... just something we hadn't heard from him before. We all loved it back then! I think it's held up well over the decades.
6:48 Guys, been watching you for awhile now and really enjoying the reactions and the songs-keep it up! I’m in my 60’s and so many musicians and great tunes miss my grid-I love all kinds of jazz , old blues, old country, and have been pretty disconnected with a lot of what you play-that I’m hearing a lot of these songs and artists for the first time too. If you ever want to feature a few obscure tunes I, and probably lots of your fans, could drop some suggestions for you-maybe one tune a week that follows a couple of guidelines (like no obscenities or any other guidelines you guys want)? I definitely know a few tunes, a few favorites, that I’d love to hear your reactions to that are pretty obscure but just blow me away-anyway, keep on doing what you’re doing, I’m enjoying reactions to favorite artists and songs as well as many I’ve never heard before, Both you guys peace out, you’re both making a lot of folks smile…
This is my FAV Richard Marx song everytime it starts I get chills it's such a storytelling song my fav kind of song.. This is a constant on my playlist
This is absolutely one of my favorite Richard Marx songs! It was a bit obscure when it first came out but I'm happy to see the love for it with these comments and your reaction to it. 🤩😍
I've never been much into Richard Marx but this song I have always loved ever since the first time I heard it, probably mostly because it's such a dark song and story. Even when I was I kid I was always more drawn to darker material
I heard this on one of my first trips to the US. Driving across the Golden Gate Bridge with the roof down on my rental with this at max volume. It will always have a special place in my heart. His vocals are so tight.
If I could only choose my singing voice... I would sound like Richard Marx! - My favourite voice in music. 😄 He's looked after that instrument of his as well; I've seen him live twice (and will again in a month) and he is remarkable. He did this thing at one of his shows (Royal Albert Hall - London) where he was totally unplugged, including zero mike. He took his acoustic into the middle of the venue, lights down low and sang his ass off. His voice totally filled the venue.
This was our holiday song in 1992 while over in Orlando as heard it in the rental van pretty much everytime we went out and also heard it playing in a lot of shops down international drive.
I love Richard Marx. Some fantastic songs in his vast catalogue. This was his one and only attempt at a singer writer story line song and expected it to go nowhere - but was a huge hit!!
My favorite Richard Marx song. Here is some information about Hazard Nebraska.(I live about 50 miles south of Hazard) It is a tiny village about 30 miles north of Kearney NE with a population of 57 at the junction of Nebraska Highways 10 and 2. There is no river running through the town however it does have a small creek.
Hi Richard Marx still sings the same amazing writer and singer! He wrote this song on his tour bus with his fellow musicians. Unbelievable! Richard Marx is married to Daisy Fuentes the first female Latin host on the 1980’s MTV. Thank you both for bringing back good memories. BTW, Robert Conrad played the sheriff. Big fan of his. He was a star in the 1970’s Wild Wild West and baa baa black sheep ❤
I’ve seen a few of the more upbeat tempo songs of Richard mentioned but one of mine is “Endless Summer Nights”. The instrumental arrangement, which includes the Saxophone 🎷, in it is wonderful. Then one of the most beautiful songs that has so much meaning for me is “Now and Forever”.
Years before his successful run as a solo artist, Marx was already an established session musician, backing vocalist, and songwriter, working and collaborating with Kenny Rogers and longtime co-writer and co-producer David Foster, and continuing to write and produce music for Madonna, NSYNC, Vince Gill, Josh Groban, Luther Vandross, Kenny Loggins, Barbra Streisand, Keith Urban, and more throughout his 40-plus year career.
As i have presumed, Amber was really hooked with the story of the song. Well, it was a brilliant song, the tune, the instrumentals were really giving off spooky vibes, and the black&white video adds mystery to the song.. I love this song by Mr. Marx.. Hope you react to his song "Hold on to the Nights" next.
Funny thing about this song. Richard tells the story at his concerts. He wrote it because he wanted to write a story song. Then he put it away thinking it was awful. so glad someone beat me so I didn't have to write so much 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I saw that in the VH1 Storytellers concert. this is my favorite RM song, and video.
My favorite Richard Marx song. He still sounds EXACTLY like this live. He’s the only person who could win a Grammy singing the phone book.
Mine too and it haunts the shit outa me.
Sherrif did do it
"Now and Forever" was a song to his wife and young son (lyrics/video).. is a really nice one.
Same here, favorite RM song 🤘🏼
Valid
This is my absolute favourite Richard Marx song. ❤
Same here. Just added it back to my play list last summer after years of not hearing it.
One of my favourite songs too. The storytelling is just breathtaking and edge-of-your-seat for a song! Richard has such a wonderful (*swoon*) voice as well 🙄🤣
Beautiful and haunting song. Love Richard Marx.
Totally Agree
The Sherrif killed her and tried to frame Richard. Love this song and video!
The sheriff Is there to throw you off. The sheriff had a obsession with her. But he had a history of killing people over abandonment And jealousy
Damn how did you work that out I've been trying to figure for years lol.
@@093gazza It's always the sheriff.
There are 3 Hazard videos, Hazard chapter 3 reveals the killer
@@tommacari4103Marx has never revealed the killer. He said he wrote it as an unsolved mystery and had no idea it would be this popular.
A GREAT Richard Marx song, with the awesome Robert Conrad (RIP).
I thought that was him. I had forgotten and then I kept looking at him thinking it was RC. I always think of him from the battery commercial (knock this battery off my shoulder) from the 70s. I cannot remember if it was Duracell?
Great robert conrad...wild wild west! And 'Centennial '
"Should've Known Better", "Satisfied", "Don't Mean Nothing", "Now and Forever" and "Silent Scream" are all great Richard Marx songs to do next time.
Richard Marx has another great song called ‘Hold On To The Nights’. It was also one of his most popular and beautiful songs! ❤
Obsessed with that song in the late 80s, great tune.
Just a Touch of Heaven sultry
When I saw Richard Marx live, he said people always ask him if it’s a true story. He stares back at them blankly.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol I can totally picture that dead pan stare...I love Richard's sarcastic humor 😅

Richard Marx was the absolute king of Ballads.
Still is ❤😊
I'm SO excited to see another Richard Marx song! I've been waiting forever for another one. Richard has such an incredible voice. I love this mini movie song.
Richard Marx. Great artist. Great Voice. Great Person. 🌊
This is one of my favorite songs by him!!
My favourite Richard mark's song
Richard Marx has one of the best male voice in the 80s, along with George Michael
True, but Freddy Mercury was alive and smashing it in the late 80s.... For their genre(s), Richard Marx and George Michael were top dogs, no doubt.
I saw Richard live a few years ago and it was amazing, his voice is really one of a kind
The sweet song, the rocky surroundings, and the mystery.... what a haunting combination in this -- easily Richard's greatest work.
That voice is liquid gold!
I saw Richard live in concert last year. A great singer who still sounds as great now as he did in the 80’s.
Like many other posters, this is my favorite Richard Marx song also. Thanks for the reaction.
Never heard this song before, I like it. It has its own melody, not like every other song out there, very nice! 💜💜
Thank you for covering a more hidden classic from Richard Marx.
