This song was a huge hit in the UK in the early spring of 1993 but I always thought it sounded straight out of 1973. I absolutely loved rocking out to it and still do. Around that time there was quite a lot of nostalgia for the music and styles of the early 70s taking off,at a time when the economy was in a mess and the government was still being hard-nosed about helping out those who'd taken a hit. Ok guys the female drummer's name is Cindy Blackman and she's married to Carlos Santana but the one you and Amber are going to love is his version of American Woman gonna knock your socks off
It ain’t over til it’s over was a song where Lenny was trying to rekindle his relationship with his then wife Lisa Bonet. Lisa was a TV Star when she played one of Bill Cosby children in his hit show. Sadly the song didn’t work on Lisa as Lenny and Lisa divorced. But the Soulfulness of the song showed Lenny’s range as a primarily Rock artist to being able to crossover into R&B, funk and soul music. It’s one of my favorite Lenny songs.

This song could be released any day in the last 20 years and STILL rip the roof off, from beginning to end this song is so much pure fire, and the video still even looks retro fresh. Can’t hype this track enough.
I'll never forget this story. Kirstie Alley was hosting SNL many years ago and Lenny Kravitz was the musical guest. They had to shoot some commercials for the show and Lenny was wearing dark sunglasses while they set-up. When they shot the commercial Lenny pulled off his glasses as soon as Kirstie started talking to the camera. When Kirstie mentioned that Lenny was on the show she turned and looked into his eyes for the first time and she just lost it in his eyes.
That makes a lot of sense. I was probably a little kid when that aired, but I was a huge Kirstie Alley fan throughout my youth and I saw her on VH1's series "The List" where celebrities and musicians would vote on the best songs of a genre. She was on the episode with Meatloaf and Alice Cooper where they ranked rock songs. She was gushing over how much she loved Jimi Hendrix, especially the song "Purple Haze". I can totally envision her reaction to seeing Lenny in person. lol
Shizzzz, if I were him, I would have lost it looking into Kirstie's eyes...they are equally gorgeous. But yeah, Lenny does have that irresistible glare.
@@bigmike2464 Wellll, I would have to strongly disagree that his style is "his" style. He'd have none of it without Hendrix. But maybe that's not what you mean..?
@@joshb23 there's always someone that did it before you or inspired you but that is not saying he copied that exactly from Hendrix, he still has his own style & there was a big gap between him & Hendrix.
The man oozes cool! He was definitely channeling a little Jimi Hendrix with this song, took it in, shook it up & what emerged was 100% Lenny Kravitz effortless coolness!
The song is actually about Jesus. "I was born...long ago...I am the chosen I'm the one....But what I really want to know is....Are you gonna go my way" He said it in an interview
Everybody rocked out to this one when it came out. Style wise it reminded many of a Hendrix tune. From the same album try "Is there any love in your Heart", and "Sugar".
Kravitz had the dreads early in his career. Had them for years. Interesting side note, his mother was the neighbor in the Jeffersons whose character was in the interracial relationship. (In real life she was married to a white hollywood music producer.) Kravitz first came out as a throwback to late 60s and early 70s style and music. Other suggested songs: Let Love Rule Stand By My Woman Fly Away It ain't Over til Its Over I Belong to You Heaven Help Again Can't Get You Off my Mind.
Alright so you were either around back then or you're just a huge Lenny Kravitz fan or just music fan that gets trivia down. I remember the lady on that show The Jeffersons from reruns and her name on the show was Helen if I'm not mistaken. I've been trying to figure out who do all these people commenting think he sounded like from the 60s and 70s other than Maybe Jimi Hendrix because of the guitar and a little bit of Blues-funk. All the big stars that I think of our big tracks from the 60's and 70's are from fans that do sound anything like this. I'm going to name a few but it doesn't mean I know all the music I'm just saying these are the big bands I know about from the 60's and 70's just to name a few and I'm only tagging you in hopes that you can throw out some names that he is reminiscent of from the sixties-70s. No particular order but I'm going to try to just toss out the bands that stand out to meet as far as knowing their music to an extent and I asked you to help me tell me please and show me please where am I missing the pieces? The bands I know from the 60s and 70s that were pretty hitmaker people are The Beatles, the stones, the Eagles the doors, The Who, Pink Floyd, Queen, CSN, Doobie Brothers, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Boston, and I could name a lot more but they're all basically going to fall under the umbrella I just mentioned and I'm not sure if I mentioned Pink Floyd because I am using speech to text since I'm on a break right now at my job. So I'm not saying these are the biggest bands of the 60s and 70s but to me it seems like they were making hits on a consistent basis. Jimi Hendrix experiment or experience because I can't remember, and the Doobie Brothers where Funk / Rock to me. Possibly Santana? I'm trying to learn and I cannot learn if I don't ask people in real life and people like you who is it that his stone is reminiscing to in the 60s and 70s because I don't know anybody. Keep in mind again I'm only 21 years under my belt so I don't know that much except everything that I'm learning and have learned as I mentioned above. I've heard of earthwindandfire but I don't know if they are rock or Funk or something of a hybrid. So you're going to have to help me out here because honestly all I can think of when I hear him if we're talkin about the 60s has to be Jimi Hendrix and it's not because of the skin is just I know about Jimi Hendrix from reading his story from Young. Lenny most definitely reminds me of Jimi Hendrix. It's not really anything to do with the skin color but it's more so maybe it was somebody that Lenny Kravitz gravitated towards because of the skin color but also because of the rock-funky sound and the guitar. I don't know the history of Prince that will but I do know that purple happens to have been his favorite color. I'm thinking Jimi Hendrix color was also purple but now I'm grasping at strings. You can ignore this long freaking message from some youngster or if you get time maybe you can kick me down some knowledge so I can continue to learn about this rock of different eras period keep in mind that I was pretty much raised a hip hop head, but since the virus hit us and we all seemed to have more time because of the lockdown in the beginning, I feel like I've learned a lot about different types of music but I do officially have a favorite rock band haha. You might love this or you might hate it but so far is guns and roses and I'm talkin anything I've heard from the sixties all the way up to the alternative scene and then
@@choice12ozborne Couple things I can point out: Lenny's vocals, in THIS song at least. He's using a very "Jimi Hendrix"-style delivery. I'm not a huge fan of his, so I don't know all his songs; but he definitely didn't have this same style when he covered "American Woman" or in "Fly Away". Also...listen to the TONE of the guitar. That kind of distortion...with the "fuzzy" kind of sound...only comes from OLD amps with transistor tubes (or from modern software that can duplicate the sound). Amps made after the 70s largely stopped using the tubes in them, and the sound of the distortion changed.
@@choice12ozborne Frist, if anything. I am simply interested in music, curious enough to pay attention to detail and have been around for a while longer than you. I do not think he sounds like any particular 70s artist. But he uses recording techniques, and equipment designed to capture the overall sound of that period. His guitar tone sounds similar to Jimm Page, Joe Perry and Marc Bolan. His overall image is reflective of the late 60s to 70s. I think his image is what most people are reacting to.
@3:30, wearing dreads was Lenny's original look. By the time this song (from his third album) came out, Lenny was already a highly respected rock musician. Once in the early 1990s he needed a backup guitar for an MTV performance of Are You Gonna Go My Way. Legendary bassist John Paul Johns from Led Zeppelin stepped up to jam with him.
Fun Fact for you Jordan and Amber: If you've ever watched "The Jeffersons", the interracial couple on the show, Tom and Helen, the actress who played Helen was Lenny's mother, Roxie Roker Lenny's also the first cousin to weatherman Al Roker from the "Today" show on NBC
I read or heard an interview with Roxie Roker when she was auditioning for The Jeffersons, and I don't know if it was Norman Lear or a casting agent who told her that she would be playing a woman in an interracial relationship and would she have a problem with that, and she responded by going into her wallet and pulled out a photo of her husband and Lenny 😊
You hear the influences of Lenny per other artists. This one is a tribute to Hendrix. You hear a bit of the Beatles hey Jude in his first hit Let Love Rule. He has influences everywhere from it ain't over til it's over and use of a falsetto and a throw back to 70 s soul and R & B. Lenny has a style that pays homage to musical heroes of his while creating his own musical take on what he does as an artist. His covers if American Woman or Fly like an Eagle show his respect for those he grew up on. By the way his mom was Helen on the television show the Jeffersons.
All true...but furthermore, you hear HIS influence on younger artists... Jack White and the White Stripes in general, The Hives.. and a lot of others...
Oh man... if you guys are digging this, PLEASE check out Gary Clark Jr. This Land is an amazing song, but super heavy thematically. He does a version of When My Train Comes in where he just transcends the 3rd dimension and gets so into the music it's just unreal. This was a joy to see y'all dig! BTW that guitar is a Flying V. I think he played an Epiphone flying V.
The entire "Mama Said" album is a banger - not a single bad song. It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over. Always On The Run. Fields Of Joy. Mama Said ... etc .. You pick one
The song is WAY deeper than that... This song is about Jesus Christ, whom Lenny referred to as "the ultimate rock star." It's about how God gives choice to man about where to turn. The opening lines spell it out: I was born long ago I am the chosen I'm the one I have come to save the day And I won't leave until I'm done
@@GrumpyOldGuyPlaysGames His dad was Jewish but his mom was Christian, and he grew up in-between both. He says in an interview that it is indeed about Jesus Christ's point of view ... I suggest finding the article.
@@GrumpyOldGuyPlaysGames Lenny has said on many occasions that it was about Jesus. While his dad is Jewish and he embraces his Jewish heritage, he has called himself a Christian for decades.
You guy should also check out his "It Ain't Over ('til it's Over)". Recorded in the 90's, but sounds like it was recorded in the mid-70's. And a good vibe, too!
YAAASSSS! I’ve been a Lenny fan forever. He’s a fusion of rock, funk, and blues. A song that I love that has a much different vibe is IF YOU CAN’T SAY NO. He plays multiple instruments and can sing almost anything. About those dreads… He and Lisa Bonet (Cosby show) met in an elevator and she also had dreads so he looked at her and smiled and said,” I like your hair.” The rest is history. They were inseparable for a long time but not without their problems. As I understand it, Lisa helped him to heal from his inner pain by convincing him after many years to cut-off the dreads to symbolize leaving the past “weight” behind him and start fresh. He has many many great songs like THINKING OF YOU (dedicated to his mother) and I BELONG TO YOU. Yet another rabbit hole for you to discover! So glad you two like his music.
Lenny is my husband. I'm obsessed with him! 😂😂 He and Prince are tied for the sexiest people to ever exist. ❤❤🔥🔥 Lenny's book is really good, highly recommend!
Lenny Kravitz is a regular on my playlist. I love the 70s glam hippy rock vibe of this song and the positive message he sings, love peace and happiness. He has not aged either! 😮
Lenny spent a lot of time in high school with Slash (Guns n Roses), and Prince was at the same school, a few years ahead of him. In Kravitz's 2020 book "Let Love Rule" (book takes you thru the first 25 years of his life), a VERY well written book and incredibly interesting, he explains these relationships.
He had an older career under another name. I believe it was Romeo Blue, but didn't go so well. When he reemerged as himself, this was the punch in the gut 70's influenced 90's song. I love this song. I would describe Lenny's sound as heavy 70's funk rock influenced. Did you know that he is a legacy? His mother was a famous tv star. He does music and movies. And now Zoe is into it. Lenny has said that Prince was a big inspiration to him. He told a story about getting to have an all night jam session with him, and that the man had energy for days. Lenny said he couldn't keep up. When Prince was in the zone, he was a beast. Lenny has one of the most talented musicians with him. The drummer was in the Fly Away video as well, which I believe you reacted to already...I think. I believe the video was symbolic of him singing from a pov of Jesus talking to the people. At the beginning of the video, the light fixture comes down light a crown of thorns descending upon him in a jesus on the cross like pose and hair that makes him look like a black jesus. I know he is half jewish, but I think he associates with being more of a spiritual person than religious. Back in the 90's, there was a huge wave of 70's retro going on. If you notice how everybody is dressed, and their hair styles, everybody is dressed in an updated retro 70's fashion.
Hey guys!!! Lenny is one of a kind. In his first studio álbum, he played all the instruments. He had a difficult times when he was a child. His parents where "White and Black" . So he had bad times at schooll. He is a genious. The female drummer is awesome!!! Good reaction!!! Greettings from Argentina. Sorry for my english.
I was watching your intro smiling like y’all have no idea how much you are going to love this song and video!!! One of my all time favorites! It never gets old. Your reaction did not disappoint!😀
This was his Jimi Hendrix period.. this one has a whole early Hendrix vibe. You guys owe it to yourselves to get the first two Jimi Hendrix Experience albums, put on the headphones and get experienced. Don’t worry about reacting to it, just listen to it and remember how different he was in 1967 and 1968
The guitar he's playing is a Gibson Flying V. Not only does it look cool, but there's a technical advantage to the design as well. It gives easier access to the highest pitch frets. A favorite among lead guitarists. -JR in Miami
Lenny is so much more than rock. He’s jazz, r&b, blues, funk, soul, reggae & so much more he mixes it all in. Listen to “It Ain’t Over til It’s Over”, “Heaven Help”, “Stand By Woman”
The other song you reacted to was Fly Away, and there is a 5 year difference between the songs. Listen to Mr. Cab Driver, American Woman (a Guess Who cover), Again, It Ain't Over til it's Over ... He's fantastic.

@@ajaxfernsby4078 no worries I have been listening to him since I was 12 I am now 42 a lot of his songs are faith-based because he is Christian was raised as a Christian by his parents and it does not shy away from speaking about it in his music as far as Hendrix goes it is a definite influence to his sound he loves all the greats like the Beatles and led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix and music like that but he is not afraid or ashamed to write songs that proclaim his faith and exactly what and how he feels about it and that is one of the things that I admire most about him and part of the reason why I have loved his music for so long I've never heard a song from him that I didn't like there are some that I like more than others yes but very few artists ever come out musically where every single song I fall in love with or can identify with he's definitely one of the few and he is in a league of his own and he is so so handsome ❤️

Bringing back memories of dancing in the bar whenever this song and Mr Jones (by Counting Crows) was played back in the early 90s. Two of my favourite songs from that time in my life.. I couldn't stay sitting down when either song was played. Both songs were brought out in 1993. Lenny Kravitz & Lisa Bonet (Zoe's mom) split up the same year this song came out.
Lenny is one of the few more recent artists that actually has true talent and heart in his music, much like Bruno Marz. One of my bands covered his version of the Guess Who song "American Woman". Great rendition! His guitar is a Gibson Flying V.
When most people think of Lenny, they think of a only handful of songs. He’s not someone most think of as having a “deep dive library” of songs. If your going to say he has a deep library, you might as well say pretty much every musician does.
I recommend “Again” “Ain’t Over Til It’s Over, “Can’t Get You Off Of My Mind,” “Always On The Run” (With Slash) “Heaven Help” and “I Belong To You.” ALL BANGERS.
Lenny went to high school with Slash, they collaborated in the song Always On The Run (Mama Said). It really is worth a listen. The riff on that one is as good or better than this one.
a coiple more Lenny songs I'd recommend would be "Again" and "It Ain't Over Till It's OVer" along with his cover of the classic rock tune "American Woman" that you guys would LOVE too!
This song came out the summer after my sophomore year of college. I was working at Blockbuster, and in our in-store video rotation was a promotional tape for the new songs from MTV. YEAH. I didn't like his cover at all; I'll take the original from The Guess Who any day.
American woman ft Prince
DITTO!
My favorite male artist ALL TIME! He has funk, versatility, vision, range, rasp, soul, and complete groove... You can't lose...
This song could be released any day in the last 20 years and STILL rip the roof off, from beginning to end this song is so much pure fire, and the video still even looks retro fresh. Can’t hype this track enough.
Gotta react to Lenny Kravitz - "Again".....❤❤❤🔥
I'll never forget this story. Kirstie Alley was hosting SNL many years ago and Lenny Kravitz was the musical guest. They had to shoot some commercials for the show and Lenny was wearing dark sunglasses while they set-up. When they shot the commercial Lenny pulled off his glasses as soon as Kirstie started talking to the camera. When Kirstie mentioned that Lenny was on the show she turned and looked into his eyes for the first time and she just lost it in his eyes.
🤦♂️
Such a gorgeous man.
Boyfriend is a rock and roll Medusa. Those eyes slay, and he’s got to use safety precautions
Lenny is a one of a kind performer. Really like him and his daughter too.
How about his mom Roxie Roker who played Helen Willis on The Jeffersons
@@davidkelly2355 Talented family; And the best part is that Lenny got HUGE on his terms, playing HIS style
@@bigmike2464 Wellll, I would have to strongly disagree that his style is "his" style. He'd have none of it without Hendrix. But maybe that's not what you mean..?
@@joshb23 His first album has a John Lennon Plastic Ono Band vibe.
Lenny's "Let Love Rule" is a simple but unforgettably powerful ballad.
His very best song...his other songs are great but the message in this song is direct and universal. We need this message more than ever now✌️❤️
It's a fantastic song! 😁⭐😁⭐😁
Favorite Lenny! How I discovered him- that video on MTV
Other suggested songs:
Let Love Rule
Stand By My Woman
Fly Away
It ain't Over til Its Over
I Belong to You
Heaven Help
Again
Can't Get You Off my Mind.
One of my favorites. Yes. Young Lenny.
Lenny is the best! Love his song Again.
Gotta do Lenny Kravits "It ain't over till it's over '.

Fun Fact for you Jordan and Amber:
If you've ever watched "The Jeffersons", the interracial couple on the show, Tom and Helen, the actress who played Helen was Lenny's mother, Roxie Roker
Lenny's also the first cousin to weatherman Al Roker from the "Today" show on NBC
Lenny and Al Roker are 2nd cousins.
I read or heard an interview with Roxie Roker when she was auditioning for The Jeffersons, and I don't know if it was Norman Lear or a casting agent who told her that she would be playing a woman in an interracial relationship and would she have a problem with that, and she responded by going into her wallet and pulled out a photo of her husband and Lenny 😊
his white Jewish father was an NBC producer whose family immigrated from Ukraine! Lenny was also married to Lisa Bonet from the Cosby Show
@@chriso6719 oh, ok
Well, I had the cousins part right
I was absolutely blessed to see Blues Travler, Dave Matthew's Band, Rusted Root and Lenny Kravitz LIVE at The Horde Festival in Memphis, TN, 1994😊
Can’t Get You Off My Mind is one of my all time favorite Lenny Kravitz songs. Such a nice change of pace from the heavy rockers.
Yes! 🔥🔥
More Kravitz! “Believe” is a different feel, and I am a sucker for “Lady!”
This song is a straight, TNT music explosion. I could never get it loud enough in my car.
I remember when this came out here in Ireland 🇮🇪 I remember thinking “ how is it possible to be this cool “ . He still is the coolest person ever
Lenny is one of the best rockers. Love his guitar playing. Love Cindy Blackman playing on the drums.
Oh man... if you guys are digging this, PLEASE check out Gary Clark Jr.
Yes, Gary Clark Jr
Gary Clark Jr. is amazing!
He sucks
3rd vote for Clark Jr.
The opening lines spell it out:
I was born long ago
I am the chosen I'm the one
I have come to save the day
And I won't leave until I'm done
I find it amazing that you would say that a devout Jewish kid like Lenny Kravitz would sing about Jesus.
Hint: Its not about Jesus.
@@GrumpyOldGuyPlaysGames His dad was Jewish but his mom was Christian, and he grew up in-between both. He says in an interview that it is indeed about Jesus Christ's point of view ... I suggest finding the article.
@@JoeMama410 Messianic Judaism

Definitely an absolute banger. I will never stop loving this song or Lenny!
Nothing better than a face melting guitar solo
Lenny and Slash went to Hollywood high school together
You guy should also check out his "It Ain't Over ('til it's Over)". Recorded in the 90's, but sounds like it was recorded in the mid-70's. And a good vibe, too!
You are so right!!!! I forgot about that song! Thanks!
Saw him in concert....what a show! ❤️🔥 And you got it right! Lenny is love, and he wants everyone together in love. Let's ALL go his way. ❤️
Lenny is my husband. I'm obsessed with him! 😂😂 He and Prince are tied for the sexiest people to ever exist. ❤❤🔥🔥 Lenny's book is really good, highly recommend!
Does Lenny know that? 😏
This one has spiritual meanings. Its about JC
Definitely a banger. He’s got a lot of great tunes.
Lenny said this was about Jesus Christ and man’s choice to follow him or not released in 93
Thank you. You beat me to it. 😆
Extremely spiritual song
Lenny Kravitz is a regular on my playlist. I love the 70s glam hippy rock vibe of this song and the positive message he sings, love peace and happiness. He has not aged either! 😮
Except this song doesn't have a positive message 😉
Lenny Kravitz is an absolute music god, no matter what genre he chooses to do. And you two are looking great! Keep up the wonderful work J & Amber.
Y’all, Lenny is everything. Saw him live twice. Amazing. And he’s beautiful 💪❤️
I’d love to see him live!
Three times here!

This was one of my favorite videos and songs back in the day. The talent of Lenny sometimes goes unnoticed. But he is a legend
Lenny is for sure one of those artists with the deep dive library. He's a throwback, full on 60s, 70s hippie rocker for the 90s. Love him to death!
When most people think of Lenny, they think of a only handful of songs. He’s not someone most think of as having a “deep dive library” of songs. If your going to say he has a deep library, you might as well say pretty much every musician does.
