Good overview overall, I also would emphasize however that there are places where there is a focus on integrating new animators - KyoAni and Ufo's animation schools, the MAPPA x Nakayama recruitment project, etc so not the entire industry is doomed but it might eventually collapse in some areas and turn into something pretty ugly. We might be seeing more RWBY's soon with how many projects A-1 is carrying right now, and I would prefer not because RWBY is really awful. It's not only the disconnect between LO (Layout) and the final product, the CGI/Composite is ugly, and the art direction is the worst I've seen so far. There are scenes where you can see how they awfully edited some assets together to somehow create a background because they lack assets. This had probably worse pre-production than some MAPPA works like GoH, and I don't say this lightly. And well, the actual production wasn't better. To name some positives, though, I learned a lot more about LO and what to avoid because all the accumulating problems caused APs and experienced Webgens to speak about the matter. I know, pretty selfish thing to say.
It's also good that you emphasized how horrible it actually is that LO and KA is seperated. In the early day it often was a good thing, because the layout animator was able to craft a cohesive and immersive world by coordinating the production with the layouts, and when layouts were handed to the animators it had its own share of benefits; But now that there is another disconnect without respect for LO as a production step whatsoever we now have a big jumbling mess and no matter how good the AD and ED is in cases like RWBY they cannot possibly keep up with all the workload to correct it, making the product not only underwhelming but just bad.
And frankly... as someone who wants to work as an animator one day it did shatter some worldviews.
Personally I just try to improve as much as I can, also working on a fan project now which is fun and can help me getting a better unterstanding of the pipeline, I hope.
For other animators who do LO, the most important thing I learned recently:
    1. Know what you can do, and what fits the scene, don't be too ambitious. That also applies to whether you accept work or not.
    2. Don't make too many keyframes, note how many in-betweens you eventually want and if you also have in-betweens in your LO (which you really don't need) then make it clear what the keyframes are. So that the animation director can focus on those frames for correcting, and doesn't get, like, 180 "keyframes". That also applies to obvious movement, like, any KA or in-between artist knows how to animate someone sitting down, no need to make 5 keyframes for that, 2 suffice.
It also helps to mark if you have impact frames, or other special stuff. I saw a layout once which was pretty well-transitioned (for Boruto) but the LO artist noted that they didn't adapt his impact frame, prob because he didn't note it was one and they were clueless.
    3. If an AP approaches you to do LO only, usually running away is prob not a bad decision honestly ^^'
Layouts transitioned to the point where they also convey the movement very clearly, and while has upsides because the LO artist conveys his vision stronger this way, if done wrong it can cause consecutive issues down the pipeline, so that is always a problem...
If you want to animate however, don't let that discourage you! Anime is all about passion, and even with a broken system it's carried by pure passion, and if you want to animate feel free to do so. We also have a raise in fan projects and indie projects I feel, which is great.

It's great to see this kind of information on video format, that's concise and straight to the point, more people that consider themselves enjoyers of animation need to see this.
By the way, would you make a video about kyoto animation in the future? if not then would you at least put them on the same pedestal as Ufotable as far as work ethic goes, or do they have severe issues of their own in your perspective?

    • @-MankoMan
      @-MankoMan  6 місяців тому +2

I' glad you liked the video!
About KyoAni, they're far superior to even Ufotable in terms of work ethic; KyoAni is the best that there is, with I think studio orange being up there with them now. The problem is that since they've beat the system, they're not a good representation of the industry norm as most studios are just trying their best to stay afloat. That's why IMO Ufotable is a good example, because they're functioning within the grueling anime industry system and functioning damn well at that.

    • @FlameSkull95
      @FlameSkull95 6 місяців тому

I totally understand what you mean.@@-MankoMan
Even despite that, I think Ufotable in terms of labor conditions, as well as how they treat their respective properties, are probably in the same threshold, generally speaking that is.
I think the major difference is that Ufotable also has the advantage of having the aforementioned dedicated 3d effects division, where as KyoAni mostly work as a single unit (as far as I'm aware that is, and their tax fraud scandal (of which I'm not trying to defend mind you), didn't even do that much of a dent in terms of their reputation and output.
On the flip side though, I understand what you mean when you say they still work within the cog wheels of the medium itself, specially when you consider their production committee is mainly aniplex (sony), which although I don't know much about any potential negatives regarding them, to me they don't inspire that much confidence based on my gut feeling.

i know this might be a little off-topic but do you happen to know how many teams A-1 pictures has? because they have like 9 shows coming out probably before 2024 and engage kiss and lycoris recoil recently stopped airing, knowing the current state of anime they finished the last episodes for those shows like 2-3 weeks ago and now they have 8 shows on their plate: sao movie 2, kagami no kojou, fate/strange fake, love is war movie (not official yet but probably), nier:automata, mashle, solo leveling, eisen flügel. does this mean some of these will probably get the same treatment like the one you describe or even the majority due to lack of time or lack of resources?

    • @-MankoMan
      @-MankoMan  Рік тому +8

A1 pictures is not even really a studio. They have teams, but not their own. They just hire freelance teams to work on their projects. That's why there's absolutely no visual similarities between their shows.
Now the bad part: they might hire people already part of a team to do other works. This happened with Kaguya, where a few key members were asked to work on a show called visual prison. Ultimately this didn't affect kaguya's quality, but it came down to the wire. The creators were still tweaking the episode MINUTES before its release.
Kaguya S3 only survived because of the immaculate planning, and well, teamwork, by the incredibly talented team in charge of it. Can't say the same for all the shows they're releasing though. Things could get ugly; I'm just gonna hope nothing happens to Kaguya.

Not really worthy of a video. The director wanted to make an amazing show with a small team of talented people without the time and resources available to do so. The director didn't refuse to scale down his project and the producers refused to give the team more time. As shit hit the fan, the "small team of talented animators" turned into literally any person willing to animate, and they worked themselves to exhaustion to keep the quality consistent. Also, the writer of the show was writing the episodes as the episodes were airing, so there was absolutely no cohesion of ideas among the people making the show.

Shuhei Yabuta and the team from season one.

It's been more than 5 years and still no release date.
I have a feeling this project is cancelled.

      So far zero information.
      Zombie land saga movie.
No information on when it's releasing.
Either I missed something but so far these are all the projects we know of.
I do agree with Mappa taking way too much projects but they seem fine imo and well structured compared to alot of studios out there. This year the studio only released 4 shows.
Aot, DDD, Kakegurui twin and now CSM.
Alot of their other works Don't even have release dates yet.
