I’m in school for computer animation and this is very real. The teachers I have work us to the bone and constantly remind us that this is how a company will be like. I’ll have so much to work that I barely see my family at times or rest. I started hyperventilating one night in my bed. One instructor even told us that we “knew what we signed up for and that means making sacrifices. We have to cut time with friends and family.” 😔 Art shouldn’t be like this.
Oh please don't go there. I've been through all of this working as a dev in the games industry. Although this was in Germany, so labor law is strict and prevents the worst abuse. Still, crunch times and death marches are a thing. It's not worth it, because you end up losing your health, your friends, your family even for nothing, since you'll start hating your job anyways.
There are lots of ways of doing art without submitting yourself to slavery. That does mean however, that you need to acquire more skills apart from art skills. Like basic marketing, good networking etc.
All get together and don't work like that
Poor you :( hopefully you’ll be given the life you deserve!

This has been going on for DECADES. What bothers me the most is when people complain about seeing more CG in their anime instead of hand-drawn, not realizing hand-drawn is the most labor-intensive method that burns out animators
FRRRRRRRR
especially when CG is actually pretty good
@@user-op5gr7vr7e I get it when cg is used for crowds cause those are a few normally unessential frames with a lot of movement and can take way longer than your standart scene. But yeah the example you give also bothers me. When cg is blended well it can take almost as much time to produce or even more as normal 2d animation. The reason studios like it is because materials for its making can be reused later, saving time in the long run.
What burns out animators is absurd production deadlines, lack of support, etc. Take a look at the massive crisis in the vfx industry right now where people are pushed to work 70+ hour weeks for months at a time.
No ones blaming the animators though, its obviously all on the producers and shit who make those decisions, and to make it so inhospitable to work on.
I also moved to Japan to become an animator, I am in second year of professional animator school now and one year away from employment. Everybody including the Japanese students is afraid and tired of the treatment. Thanks for addressing the problem!

Animators truly go through hell, doing their best to complete a 23 minutes episode to finally get off from work and take some rest and then there are kids reporting the animation quality is bad just because it didn't matched their expectations.
Well we can’t excuse bad animations bro
Sorry but uhhh people are allowed to call out bad animation. Though it’s fucked up how overworked they are.
@@Howitgoes799 but some one is not respect
I don't think most people are blaming the animators when complaining about the quality but really blaming the studio for the conditions leading to the quality being poor. It's a shame that for, likely reasons related to greed, studios have to bid for a lower pay on shows to avoid potentially not having work. This leads to the studios making a very minimal profit from the job and having to scrunch not only time but worker pay to avoid making a loss. This is all so the fellas in the production committee can make the biggest buck possible from the product.
I would honestly like to see revenue split from the animation studio, the committee, and all the individual players within the committee. I don't have a full grasp on how it all works out but it sounds like to me that there is just way too many players involved, who all do very minimal work on their own, but all require a big cut for their "contributions" so they screw over animation studios by making them bid against each other for the lowest possible split. The only way I can see the situation being fixed, since most individual animators would rather give up on their dream of animation or kill themselves than unionize against this, is if laws were passed that prevented the way the committees are formed or required a minimal percentage split to animation studios that would allow proper wages to the animators.
But really I'm doubtful that this system will be fixed anytime soon.
Animation is bad doesn't equal to bad animators and so no, I'm pretty sure most of us aren't blaming animators. Whenever I see badly animated anime the first thing come to mind is small budget, like for animation. So it's management, not animators.
It's the artists and animators that are the ones that bring life to an epic story and make it a masterpiece. They deserve recognition and monetary benefits for all their hard work. I really hope that this approach will change soon. I will be taking a look at the non-profit organisation and help as much as I can
This is absolutely heartbreaking. I will always keep this in mind when I watch anime from now on.

Crazy thing is, this is not just an animator issue. Cultures where work ethic and "the grind" are prioritized over the physical and mental health unfortunately leak into all sorts of occupations and yield similar disastrous results. I remember watching a doc on delivery drivers (either japan or korea, can't remember which) where dudes were dying from heart failure and exhaustion because the workload simply wasnt sustainable, but when you have bills and family to take care of, you do what you must. Their needs to be an overall shift i work/life balance, for sure.
Underrated comment
Criminally underpaid and overworked employees, wage theft and slave labor. Sounds a lot like Capitalism.
It’s not a meritocracy, if you are new and young you get treated like a slave at the bottom of the barrel, many students travel hours to work for a few bucks a day on 12 hour shifts, only to do it all again the next day, the culture brought on by previous generations is almost genuinely like a “get rich of die trying” format, if you ain’t a successful, wealthy and young business owner, then you may as well curl up in a gutter and die, because there isn’t any help for you if you don’t become a wealthy success.
I agree. It's not just problem of animation industry spesificaly. The thing is, we talk about specifically animators overworking because it greatly affects product we consume(that is anime) and because anime is more popular nowadays.
Not only that, but also their true, sincere passion is getting exploited.
Damn... This is truly heartbreaking and it's outrageous that this is the reality of the situation that's been going on for so long now. I am definitely going to share this and I really hope that things can change in the anime industry and in Japan overall. There are far too many issues with Japan's politics and business and this is an issue that's serious.
I don't know why anyone is surpised ? We have seen this again , and again in toei animation and A1 pictures, and there were like week long hashtags on twitter, but then a new episode of their hit anime came out, and everyone stopped caring because well.... they get their anime. people pretend to care but when their anime comes out they stop caring. We all know the working conditions of animators i don't even think its a secret at the moment. But its been shown many times over, that people care more about getting their anime, over how they are getting the anime
Too bad that's how it goes, cuz you choice art for the process and final pieces, not the money. It's sad but I've let some feelings go already, ai art will soon take over, bit more sad as well but you deal with it yourself.
@@cingcing3540 Yes, it’s expected to work for ‘less’ pay. It’s not fine to have suicide inducing amounts of labor for barely enough to survive.
It’s not like these companies can’t afford to pay their employees. They just prefer the dystopian approach of “it’s easier to replace workers than keep them healthy”.
Bruh we don't have much power to change things in another country
American animators from Disney and other hand draws studios used to suffered like this in the past. Some moves on to 3D and others comic books
(my fav Rick Remender who told scary stories when he was working for DreamWorks in hand draws animation)
The industry needs to die in order to be reborn anew. Maybe when cash stops flowing, the companies might start to care about their employees.

I say they should strike en masses with a clear list of desires. The companies themselves should support their employees. And they will if they can’t find anyone to animate what makes their pockets fat.
Most animators are not employees, they are freelancers. This let's the companies get away with way more. Furthermore, if they were to strike, the animation companies would outsource to Phillipines, Korea, and web-gen animators who would jump at the opportunity to work on a famous anime.

Tbh I am trying to remember but I had forgotten the majority part of this story, in the end, her boss gave her 1~2 months of vacation after they filed the report.
I never knew that the animators who create magic in their work went through so much suffering...If we look at their work they deserve so much without them we would not have fluid animation and beautiful art ..it brings me to tears
animators deserve so much, when i start something and dont feel like reading, watching is the top 1 thing ill do
You're a gem for bringing this realization to the forefront for any of us anime/manga fans that might not have known.

* For any one in the comments .How do we solve the problem of a whole global village viewing artists as (non-effectual to society)...
They think We don't solve a high quality problem in the world so the value of the "artist" title is low and is still taboo across a span of cultures.. but how do we solve that.. how do we alter perception?
@@Eddierath I'm an illustrator and sculptor, many of my best friends all work in the largest studios in the world. There's been times where travelling the US or abroad that they run into one another at bars and restaurants. Basically, there's no shortage of bodies that have a minimal amount of talent when it comes to art. On the other hand there are extremely talented and unique artists who're able to sell their works, right out of or during school. The business is a trap like any other, they rely on manpower but those in charge have no care, no passion for what they produce. Look what it did to Miyazaki :\
Thanks for the notice I just donated and shared with my friends hopefully there useful but I'm just not ready for the animators to not exist anymore thank u
Such a Harsh reality !!!!!
I hope the Animators get their money they deserve they work so hard in return they get mental illness
this is sad, its just so sad, animators need more do be payed more and recognized for their hardwork
*Every frame is a blessing*
The animators deserved much more for their pure dedication and time which they should get more raise
This makes me sick ! I got teary eyed . Bc they are the hardest working ppl on this planet and have made some our childhoods and even save lives with their artwork . As an artist I want to help these amazingly talented people
This is outrageous! Animators should be paid a fair amount regardless if the anime itself went popular or not. How could they treat them with such disregard? I sincerely wish this shitty reality for animators will change. Thank you for making this video and spreading awareness.
I hope this reaches the right people, I'm currently job hunting but soon would like to start contributing to causes such as this. Thank you for bringing this to light!
Hats of too Mastar for spreading the message to save the real people who are responsible for all the anime we know and love.
This shit really hurts to see, these are the people that bring some of our favorite stories to life. They don't deserve to suffer while management eats the fruits of their labor.
It's crazy that I make more than a japanese animator, and I work at a dead end job. I seriously hope things get a lot better for the animators in Japan, because being worked to death it's just terrible fate for anyone.
Dude my dream was to become a animator or create my own Manga omggggg this is crazy I pray these people get support and get the credit they deserve and that other companies are created in the industry that actually care for their animators
This is heart breaking, its reminding me of how the United States is now with this inflation and how companys refuse to pay the working class a livable wage. This sucks that people in Japan that are animators have to even experience this and I def want to help them! I loved anime since I was 18 and i love anime so much. ❤
To be fair, the US has a far better working culture than Japan in my opinion.
I will do everything in my power to help the animatiors. They need our help.
They need to unionize in a national level and this is something that needs to be done with artists on a global level. One of the highest grossing things in the world is art and the artists are starving because they are pimped out.
It's sooo sad..., I don't have even words for it.
As a student of animation, I'm really scared about my future
ive heard kyoto animation treats their staff better and cares for them
Quit it. Now. It’s not worth the suffering, the pain, there’s so much other jobs you could be, don’t waste your life on animating.
As an upcoming animator seeing this gives me more respect to those who are professionals in the animation buisness I want my own production and workers to live in a comfortable and a professional manner no matter how hard It could be seeing happy workers bring better success
The animators Deserve respect and time. The pressure they feel must be intense and immense
I wish I could really do more then a couple dollars....thanks for helping us see this man love your page I will be donating regularly
We should invite them here so these amazingly talented artists can start there own animation studios. Or make a go fund me or something similar to creat animation studios in Japan that pay fairly
Man wth ? I have no words for this........these big company bosses are nothing without these legends these guys are gems...these company bosses have no worth without these legends
This is dope keep it going
glad to see someone speaking on this
Respect to those animators who are struggling and presented us with a god-level animation, even though they didn't get paid well, they deserve better🙂🙂❤️
I remember reading an article in Newtype USA (a old anime magazine no longer in print) that talked about this. I still remember the line "You probably think that because anime DVDs are so expensive that the animators are making buckets of money, right?". It was followed by an explanation of this very topic. This was like 2004-5ish. I can't believe this is still an issue! They need more support. Spread the word.
Edit: I changed the year to 2004-5ish. I remember reading before Hurricane Katrina happened. I remember the last issue had Tsukasa and Subaru from .hack//sign on the front.
That's insane. If one can make more money in fewer hours at a retail job that requires no skills, the animators should go on strike.
@eric Spencer You have to do something though, you can’t just do nothing. If you’re afraid all the time, nothing will ever change. The pioneer strikers had to lose their jobs, and they also went through a lot, unfortunately.
@eric Spencer Yeah, next talentless guy. Studios would soon realize some people can't be replaced when their profits tanked.
Of course, strikes need numbers, so it'd take time. And the animators would need to pick up a side job like modelling or drawing, or creating a UA-cam channel and living off the ad revenue.
This is crazy hopefully this video reaches a bunch of people
Now I can't hate any anime that's bad, all are hard work and I'll respect and support that. May the animators around the world receive great support to not struggle in the further future.
yes, international solidarity
The dedication, the blood sweat and tears they give to this art form in order to give the world joy is ridiculously underappreciated and long past time to be changed
These animators deserve much more than just some money
This is what i thought when i started watching the making of anime. Animators paid less while they do their job seemingly really hard. They deserve justice for making us otakus happy
Well said. The sad problem on top is that in order for animators to get a decent position at a semi-decent studio, they need to be able to create stories from scratch. At that point, you get thousands who want to be directors/creators, with ideas just flowing out. But when they get to the studios? It turns to sketching hell.
This has been talked about for a while now. But there literally nothing essential changing. I can't help but wonder how long will this last and when will things just break.
Anime is what shapes a lot of us today, animators deserves more respect
it's rooted so deeply in many Asian societies... Rarely seen k-pop idols living as freely as singers and artists elsewhere, they sold their lives and are only the famous "face" of its company. Never talking back to superiors or else you'd get punished by ridiculous consequences. This has to change seriously. Makes me sick.
I’m an og weeb (1989+) this I never knew, I watched and loved in ignorance, now I am sad and helped find this. Def gotta donate, their art basically raised me
without animators, its just black screen with music
this whole thing has been known for ages, glad you shed even more light on it
Thanks for making me aware of this issue! It’s a dam shame 😔
Thanks for bringing awareness to those of us that had no clue, this is not ok like those top corporate people would be broke without the animators how is that ok
Anime and Kpop have been dominating and will continue in the next decades. However in Japan and Korea, harsh working conditions are still a problem where many animators (JP)/idols (KR) are overworked and unhealthy. IDK what's with East Asia and their enterainment/animation industry.
I really used to think that animators are rich because of people doing commissions on Twitter charge 30-50$ for just a simple half body and in Japan the animators are on the verge of depression, no money 😩 but as a anime lover I am going to support them as much as I can ❤️
Being able to pick your own rates and decide when and what you draw is nice. The fact that there's a term for working yourself to death in Japan...not so nice
