I'll say it here again. There's nothing inherently wrong with upscaling anime. It's just that it's extremely low effort content and gets millions of views, so I'm salty about it. There are channels that's even releasing animemes in 4K. No one's watching memes because it's in 4K, but having that crap in the title is still beneficial, which is hilarious.
About 60 fps anime though, that's a whole different story. If it ain't broken, don't fix it, and if it ain't broken definitely don't break it, which is what these interpolation "artists" do. Stop it. Get some help.

1 thing I disagree with is the idea that you can't depict motion in cgi without just blurring it. Like you said smears are just a combination of squash and stretch. Same applies for cgi, many animators will break the character model and stretch certain parts. The issue is simply that cgi isn't used very well in most anime.

That's a topic for an entirely different video that I did not want to go into deep with this video. I literally even recorded the explanation for that but cut it out because the video was too long lol.
There were requests by a few people for me to talk about CGI in anime so I thought I'd include it in that, but here's a brief one for those interested:
CGI in anime is used mostly as substitution for hand drawn animation to save time. Adding smears on CGI models, like spiderman into the spider-verse, can be done even in anime, but it's a complicated procedure and would beat the purpose of using CGI in the first place, which is to save time.
D4DJ is a full CGI anime with beautiful smears, because in it, CGI is not meant as a replacement but is the core animation itself. I think I've seen smears in one punch man season 2 CGI as well. But generally, in anime, literal motion blur is used on CGI.
Thanks for pointing it out cause what I said in the video is wrong.

Came here from your new jjk analysis. As you said on the upscaling bit, yt compression is dogwater. The reason ppl are upscaling resolutions is because 1080p gets way more compressed than 2k or 4k. Especially small channels get compressed heavily, atleast in my own experience. Agree with the 60fps shit though, absolute garbage.

Same go for IMAX, it isn’t always a good idea to have the ENTIRE film to be filmed 100% with IMAX camera, because it might ruin some scene, so only selected scenes are filmed with IMAX camera.
Sometimes I wonder if it’s a good idea for Anime to have some selected scenes to be made in native 60FPS.

The "60 FPS" people are terrible... the worst part is that thier uploads are still up because it bypass the copyright system.
Basically it's so horrible that the UA-cam bot can't recognize it...

I really learned so many things from this video🤩, I used to thought If 60fps and 4k anime are better , then the animators and studios must be stupid? but one day I watched that video 1080p anime to 4k in capcut 💀💀and you already know my reaction "I was the one who was stupid" I thought 4k have more pixels so It might improve details and movement then my common sense told me that if you record 480p video in 4k from your mobile there is no way it'll improve your video in case of details. yeah that's it, and can you explain me what's meaning of 'PDE'? 😅

I think a pretty good exercise anyone can do to see what you mean about rescaling things back to the native resolution it was made at is to open up an image in something like MS Paint, scale it up, confirm the process and then reselect it to scale it back down again and then compare it to how it was supposed to look.

I keep watching these 60FPS videos and they just look choppy.
It's like the same with animating. Obviously we can't do 24 FPS as that's really hard to do, which is why 12 or even 9 frames is easier to get done.

I do upscaling videos without the interpolation and would love an opinion if it's something you'd consider watching. The idea is just to make the original shine the best way I can. I also do a little of color correcting!

On the topic of 60 fps interpolation, I find it interesting that the 'normies' say it looks better. Its not like they are all just collectively lying to themselves they must genuinely think it looks better, and I really wonder why. Is the smoothness just more appealing?

I do need to upscale my content just to counteract the blurriness the comes from watching something on a billboard sized 4k monitor, but most people probably wont notice a difference (especially if you are watching it on some 21 inch 1080p screen)

  • @FlameSkull95

As an addendum to the resolution section, generally speaking, TV programs are made with, you know, television in mind, which is even often being output at an interlaced 1920x1080 (which is the current standard, afaik), or even lower pixel counts, which is attributed to the technical limitations of the broadcasting process in general, and I'm willing to assume it's a similar story for theatrical screenings (if anyone's willing to either correct me on this or add something feel free)

Yea the 4k anime community is pretty dogshit ngl
but the good 4k anime channels do a lot more than upscaling, ofc they do upscale but the MAJOR thing that makes them look good is the color corrections and i don't just mean saturation slider go brrr
It takes a bit of testing to get the right image that looks beautiful.
Its the main reason why filters exist
Also 60 fps anime looks good when its twixtored good and the time remaps are satisfying
But those heavenly idiots that do nothing and just do 60 fps, I would genuinely attack them

  • @Hetsu..

I disagree actually, in motion 60fps anime isnt that bad imo. The timing is still there, yet it isnt, but it is.
