Otsuka once said " I want to improve fast. Points that normally take 20, 25 years to reach, but I wanted to quickly create an environment where the workers can have ambitions." So yeah, while this video might paint him as this "greedy' businessmen, he does seems to have good intention and the progress are indeed showing. I'm not too deep into industry stuff myself, but from the discussion i heard the industry are moving into relying less on freelancer with major companies the likes of Cygames, JOEN & TOHO competing to tie down talented people. And to compete with the big fish MAPPA is doing what they are doing now. I can see signs of this chapter of MAPPA being a necessary sacrifice to someday become something like KyoAni, but we shall see in the future if Otsuka can realize his promises, or he will continue being just greedy businessman and implode one day.
@@mikusupremacy4786bro is literally copy pasting on another comment. No shit, cause no studio can be, it needs a shit ton of money and time and Mappa is much bigger studio and they will expand themselves a lot
@@mikusupremacy4786 The key difference with KyoAni is that they have control over their own production & very loyal animators that they nurture themselves. MAPPA is showing signs of moving towards that by investing more in their own shows, training newbies & contracting talented animators full time. I made quite a big error with the Vinland Saga portion of this video, which I mostly fixed in my video on Vinland Saga's production analysis: ua-cam.com/video/ihoCr-L14SM/v-deo.html
It’s a shame. With hells paradise. But I can’t say it ruined my enjoyment, it was still a really good show in my opnion. I can only hope season 2 has a better production though
take my word season 2 is when it starts getting hype. its just non stop good stuff. if they can make season 2 even just consistently great not the best but just a pleaser to the eye then i believe they can really reap the full rewards of producing a good animation
@jazzwinningthechip6821 The first episode was probably the only one where I didn't notice any inconsistency. Especially on the character designs on the face, the first most noticeable being Kisho's around episode 3, which I found unfortunate, really.
I expect Otsuka to just assemble another team to separate CSM & JJK. They got money & manpower, pretty sure they could've stole some of currently free AniP in the industry like Ookubo from I.G or even someone from Khara/4C thru Hiramatsu and Otsuka connection idk. I see Otsuka character development from his latest interview 3 weeks ago, hopefully something change.
I'm afraid studio Khara only interested with Mecha show even if they free after Evangelion rebuild ended, also i heard they currently works on monster design of Kaijuu8's Production I.G. As for Studio 4°c they did so well in Berserk memorial last year and probably busy with another sequel/movie. But it's a shame that studio 4°c treat their staff so badly on Children of sea, i hope Otsuka managed to bring them to Mappa.
You forgot to add that they are making Okada movie and Lazarus. Admittedly, both of those projects look amazing and have probably already finished production. It's a shame what's happening in MAPPA, especially since every team has incredible potential
Lazarus is not finished, don't fool yourself. Finished projects without a release date is something that simply doesn't happen, especially in the anime industry
Watanabe project is most likely to consist of people from Bones or at least the team from Caroline Tuesday. BahiJD guarantee to be there, and I heard there's a surprising name that u couldn't think of before 👀.
@@Cocxy69 wym? How was the ending horrible it was a pretty good ending. Leaving good mystery also its not that they aren't putting effort. They have no time
It really is a rather annoying situation, and a depressing one above all else. Producers are able to pull together some of the most passionate staff and artists in the anime industry only to see, at most, like 80% of what they're worth. I truly hope that there is some light beyond the tunnel for some of these productions and the loving workers behind them. But in this current predicament it is hard to see that... It's like I'm watching a sinking ship, with people constantly patching it up to keep it above the sea level. From where we are doing something about it is damn near impossible. Even then predicting the path of this studio is unthinkable. I mean even now we suddenly get "Lazarus", a production that has been devised for around 3 Years. It's due for next year, and has artists who already speak of if a lot of it is finished. To go beyond that a there's already talk of a new, and first time, MAPPA x Kadokawa production. Truly one of the most bizarre, unpredictable, shady and confusing Studios to ever exist in Japanese Animation
Tbh just barely got back into anime and hells paradise is is top tier from 5 plus years ago animation used to be highly inconsistent didn’t realize it till I started watching other more modern series
About anti aliasing in Jigokuraku. When it's time for clean-up and they do proper line-art, most anime do a lineart on computer with turn off smoothing. After that at compositing stage in After Effects they add OLM smoother (industry standard provided by studio OLM) to smooth the lines. So i agree with your question: How the fuck did they fucked up smoothed lines? It's scares me out, how terrible conditions did they had
This is exactly correct, however, the fact that the dude in the video doesn't know this worries me. As a side note, the reason they do this is cause it makes the coloring phase easier as well, as having lines with aliasing well mess with the edge detection/tolerance of the fill tools. It's also not that hard to imagine how that ended up there, basically, they got rushed and had to put that in the final episode before it could get put into the compositing stage. Personally, I think there are some views n this video that are extremely flawed even if I do agree with the whole idea that Mappa is absolutely exploiting a lot of their staff members.
@@-MankoMan Hey, when it comes to the "flawed views" comment, I am referring to some of your takes like hell's Paradise looking "awful" when in reality it just looked normal (as in the middle of the pack not great not horrible) and this is coming from someone who was actually pretty critical of hell's paradise from the get-go. The part of the aliasing was miss informative and the problem is even if it was just a joke someone might take that and spread it. There are already enough misconceptions about anime production as is. I would also say it'd be best to remain cautious with assumptions regarding animations studios and animators, some of the stuff you said was factual but some were speculative, you probably know more animators and staff by name than I do but I can tell you that some of them don't really enjoy this type of content cause a lot of times we don't really know the ins and outs of what is happening in each project so a lot of what we say may end up feeding the wrong ideas. I don't really know what part of my comment was "aggressively vague" 😂 I just stated what I thought at the moment but I also like learning from others so I share that thought there. If you don't mind I will share a channel here that has taught me some cool stuff about anime production. (it has two about compositing that are my fav) Let me know so I can post the link.
@@TheArtKingdomYT Thanks for the reply! I agree, I usually try my best to stay as neutral about topics as possible, but in this video I didn't do the best job at separating the facts with assumptions based around facts. About the link, yes please post it here.
As for Lazarus and the "P.A works movie" that's also being produced at MAPPA, the Sushi restaurant analogy works. Two passion projects with no real pressure as far as deadlines are concerned, bringing in fresh staff that's not part of the other big projects to create amazing works from scratch.
It's not really "P.A works movie" if both producers are from MAPPA, DoP MAPPA in-house, Color designer MAPPA in-house, Seimei Kidokoro who worked with them for the last few years, one of AniP is MAPPA in-house etc.
@@luka-uw8ed "PA works movie" as in the animation team of Maquia. This aged way too well. The recent interview manabu was in had clinically insane levels of irony. All while jjk's recent ep wit dagon and the coming ep wit toji is happening lmao
Here's hoping that at least the teams behind Lazarus and Alice and Therese (film), both seemingly very high profile projects and both with industry renowned directors, end up getting the time they deserve to release something they can be proud of (considering both of them have been reportedly in production for a while), because all the rest of the teams seem like they are eternally fucked.
Also if The schedule is that bad for JJK. 3 weeks won't do shit. Maybe just an extra polish for one episode. And there are still many episodes left. It might be a Marketing thing or they would just bruteforce 10 till 12 episodes and just report a delay
they are probably putting a lot of manpower into jjk s2 just so it doesnt completely crumble and they wont wanna delay, since you have to pay for timeslots to actually have the show air on tv and then theres all the marketing stuff that theyve planned for s2. i think thats how it works atleast

They're probably going with Attack on Titan final season release schedule to avoid dropping Chainsawman or Jujutsu kaisen. Part 3 (and 4) of the final season looked great only because they made them over an hour long special episodes with over year and a half of production time with +6 month break between the two.
I think the break of Jujutsu Kaisen in episode 5 is because right in that part the arc of "Gojo's past" ends, so makes sense. It's great to know more about the production of these animes, but the reality is that I really enjoyed each one of them even though they had mistakes.
With aot new parts having decemt schedules, moboroshi movie bieng in production from like 3-4 years now and lazarus rumoured to be in production in for a long time. Thier is hope that this burning dump of mappa is getting a hold coz hayashi have enough power to influence studio and gosso and ryu being in jjk and csm and permanent members gives them athority to ask for good schedule if they build enough pressure and can convince monobo about the advantages of good schedule(moboroshi, Lazarus, andmaybe aot last part also) , so i just hope studio gets better and it seems it it will ❤❤
JJK and CSM will probably get more divided as The time goes (even recently they mostly Share big KAs than The whole staff) . There is a roadmap you can find if you do a little google searching.
Yeah the staff just Jujutsued their last kaisen, about time to, like if they kept going they would be forced to push our unfinished episodes, not even mentioning the poor treatment the animators are receiving, hope they lose everything, cuz I feel like they won't learn unless they really lose it all really
Manabu Otsuka has a "suffer now and be blissful later" type of mindset. It's pretty much a toss up tbh It can make or break MAPPA. The only two outcomes I see coming out of this are either they become a studio like Madhouse (specifically in the 90s to early 2010s era) or they become a studio like Gainax (A massive high for around 8 years then completely falling off).
I have a feeling that we might A. See MAPPA imploding from the inside due to Otsuka addiction for accepting more projects than necessary or B. The Muriyama exodus happens again. Also I 'm glad that Wit let go of AOT and Vinland Saga, it allowed them restructure their production pipeline and we get shows like the Great Pretender, Vivy, RoK, Spy x Family, etc. I'm on the fence about Suicide Squad Isekai, but judging by the trailer it doesn't look all that bad.
Yeah MAPPA is looking too bleak right now. They shouldn't have picked up Jigo at all with how spread thin they are despite expanding their staff so much and that decision is definitely their breaking point into this current position. I'm glad Ogawa and Hayashi groups are fine though and would probably be in the future unless they get some other projects that are not PeakTondemo or Dorohedoro. I'm wondering how Lazarus fits into all this though because the schedule for that is good and there is definitely a lot of talented animators due to the quality of the trailer and Watanabe being director but what team at MAPPA is handling this for it to be this good I wonder. That being said I hope they sort out these issues because MAPPA is in such a good position compared to other studios with so many talented staff and a large in house amazing cg department most other studios wouldn't dream of getting only to spread staff so thin.
Just as an example of how unresearched and unknowledgeable this is, I'm just going to look at the Vinland Saga section: -"No studio would take it so MAPPA took it." Untrue. The director himself said there were multiple options and MAPPA was just first to move. -"It was put under MAPPA, but they gave absolutely no assistance outside of episode 15." So wrong it`s hard to know where to start. For starters you mentions the episode director of 15, Tokio Igarashi. But of the "bunch of Attack on Titan staff" that came with him (really only three Animation Directors), Manabu Akita, Daisuke Niinuma and Mikine Kuwahara, the last worked also on 13. Plus Fumihide Sai, another AoT main, worked on 11 and 13. All of this is easily researchable information. But of course even just perusing the credits at all would have revealed that MAPPA did douga work for every episode, as with all shows, so clearly individual staff names wouldn't even register. But that's not even the most outrageous problem. While this is something that even someone that isn't lazy might have a hard time finding out, 9 out of 24 episodes were directed by MAPPA employee staff (1 being co-directed) by a total of 7 episode directors. By comparison, a total 1 episode of season 1 was co-directed with a freelancer by a WIT employee. With episodes for the show taking as much as 6 months (remember, episodes are produced in parallel) this is a massive investment of salaried man-hours that pretty much certainly dwarfs WIT's direct involment, which came down to action by Imai (who by the way was probably never an employee, but was indeed a regular freelancer that should count as workforce) and AD participation by Kadowaki, Takaaki Chiba, Kyohei Tezuka and such. With S1s elevated AD count, even those participations are likely to have been lesser in volume than that of SnK's staff in S2. -"Vinland Saga's staff is a passionate and tightly knit group that would produce the show even without help from the studio" I'm sure they are, but the staff group that came from season 1 outside of the main (OP credited) staff, amouted to 6 episode directors (yes, fewer than MAPPA contributed, and I'm counting here Kento Matsui, who was only assistant episode director on S1), 5 animation directors (Tsujimura, Inoue, Wakasa and tenuously Nishihara and Murata, who barely participated) who doubled as KA a lot earlier in the series. I should also mention star storyboarder Atsushi Kobayashi, who directed on S1 but focused on storyboards in S2. Overall the rest of the AD staff were not significantly involved with either studio (Ayano Fujita and Yukie Suzuki worked rotation on Idaten, but I assume they were recruited by VS's producer Hasegawa and did Idaten first so they could come in halfway and not be on retainer for the entire duration, possibly because the production couldn't afford it). Episode 16 also featured Hiroki Fujii and Shiho Tanaka as ADs, borrowed from Ogawa's line (Kakegurui Twin, Tondemo Skill). This type of exchange can be perfectly fine, by the way, in a show with an extended production period like this, because it helps freelancers that are likely working at the studio and are paid by the cut, to fill their time without having to deal with other studios. No joke, very, very few of even the KA that worked on S2 touched S1 other than Tsujimura, Inoue, and action director Akiko Kudo, who indeed, handled a lot of the action. Even then, the Snake vs. Thorfin fight was handled by Jonghyun and Yuto Kaneko, both MAPPA freelance contacts. Overall, just a mess of misinformation. It would take a further wall of text to get into other aspects of it, since barely anything factual is mentioned. There's a lot to be said about MAPPA's approach to growth, in attempting to grow their in-house share of production (through agressive hiring) while also attempting to increase their revenue streams (through investing and managing IPs as well as producing merchandising) and how it has led to disfunctional productions, but absolutely none of it is approached here at all.
You make some really great points, and I do agree that I fumbled with the stuff about vinland saga. I definitely should have specified that I was talking about particularly the action animation staff and not directors or douga, but I'm making a follow up video anyway which should clear things up. "Overall, just a mess of misinformation. It would take a further wall of text to get into other aspects of it, since barely anything factual is mentioned." If this is about something other than Vinland Saga, then I would really want to know about it. if not here in the comments section, maybe DM me on twitter. As for your last paragraph, I felt like talking about those things weren't necessary at all, since the focal point of the video is the reason why Jigokuraku failed not only as an anime but a "MAPPA anime" specifically since it goes entirely against Otsuka's ideologies of making quality anime and building the whole MAPPA brand around sakuga.
JJK schedule is also very unknown (although some guesses can be made, like episode 5 was in production at December of 2022 but that's it). And also the whole industry is fucked, but Mappa is actually growing and expanding (same with their in-house departments)
@@-MankoManbecause I do think for how much the Studio is growing and expanding, some sacrifices probably gonna happen. I'd really love to see both the Seshimo and Hayashi teams being able to work on original passion projects of their choice after so many years of brutal workl on big ip's imposed over them; and if Otsuka wasn't willing to do that, they'd just leave. Like, I know there are big fandoms wishing for the next generation of Shonen action titles to be adapted, but I'm more interested in when will we be able to see the next Space Dandy, Flip Flappers, or Sonny Boy, where the creators can pour their talent and imagination over something interesting and fulfilling to them, with no creative limitations. That would be nice...

Really good and sad video I wanted you to talk more about the new members under seshimo team with jujutsu like jun nakagawa and the director of episode 3
Great vid as always. I love hearing/ watching about the animation industry. However, it's sad that not only MAPPA does do this, we have JC staff for example. Anyway, I hope MAPPA doesn't collapse at the end, because I somehow like this studio, maybe because they produce most of the IPs I like, lol.
JC Staff outsources a lot and has a lot of anime that are animated conservatively. They'll have like 2 or 3 anime per year where they have their top dogs but stuff like Smartphone Isekai S2(basically done by Engi), Sacrificial Princess & the King of Beasts(mostly outsourced), and The Duke of Death and His Maid(done by Cg studio SMDE) barely affect the main staff at the studio. The amount they do is still a lot but they don't have the huge ambition that Mappa has, too bad that Mappa's ambition is actively harming their staff.
J.C. Staff doesn't seem to be doing bad though, some of their animes are entirely or almost entirely outsourced, while the ones they're giving priority and doing more of it in-house like Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, Edens Zero and Nanatsu Maken aren't high-profile shows, and based on the credits they don't seem to be chaotic productions, both SAFT and EZ had episodes with literally 0 2nd KAs, while the 15 episodes of Nanatsu were finished before the release.
Off topic, WIT Studio made a right decision to pass AOT to Mappa. Now they’re taking their time making originals and some high IP’s like Vivy, Ranking of Kings, and Suicide Squad Isekai

Sakugabooru is the site that you're asking for. Go check it out. Got some really good shit in there. Like production materials for animes and behind the scenes things. Along with interviews with staffs and whatnot.
They should pick up fire punch and redo a promised Neverland season 2. While they're at it, make a 3rd hunter x hunter remake followed by the dark continent arc up until the latest chapter. Lol
at the end you said "chainsaw man or jjk needs to go" is there suppose to be a chainsaw man season 2? me personally im one of the biggest csm fans but if there is a season two i think they should put it on hold for now
This makes me really uncomfortable. I love the shows Mappa produces, they always look amazing. I just wish they'd treat their staff better. I don't care if I have to wait longer for a product if it means that the people working on it don't have to literally sacrifice their physical health and private life to make it happen.
Mappa has better working conditions then most of the other studios (A-1, Cloverworks, etc.). They are able to produce so many animes because they have a lot of subdivisions

I can see signs of this chapter of MAPPA being a necessary sacrifice to someday become something like KyoAni, but we shall see in the future if Otsuka can realize his promises, or he will continue being just greedy businessman and implode one day.

You could let me know your points without being aggressively vague about it. I'm always willing to learn more from people who know what I don't.

As for Lazarus and the "P.A works movie" that's also being produced at MAPPA, the Sushi restaurant analogy works. Two passion projects with no real pressure as far as deadlines are concerned, bringing in fresh staff that's not part of the other big projects to create amazing works from scratch.

Suicide Squad should look great, at least. It was pretty much confirmed just recently that it has Vivy's AniP
R u planning to make an analysis of ep 4 JJK season 2? Would love to hear your input.
Any girl can die on my mans smiles fr
Just as an example of how unresearched and unknowledgeable this is, I'm just going to look at the Vinland Saga section:
-"No studio would take it so MAPPA took it."
Untrue. The director himself said there were multiple options and MAPPA was just first to move.
-"It was put under MAPPA, but they gave absolutely no assistance outside of episode 15."
So wrong it`s hard to know where to start.
-"Vinland Saga's staff is a passionate and tightly knit group that would produce the show even without help from the studio"
I'm sure they are, but the staff group that came from season 1 outside of the main (OP credited) staff, amouted to 6 episode directors (yes, fewer than MAPPA contributed, and I'm counting here Kento Matsui, who was only assistant episode director on S1), 5 animation directors (Tsujimura, Inoue, Wakasa and tenuously Nishihara and Murata, who barely participated) who doubled as KA a lot earlier in the series.
You gotta give them Credit that how Mappa didn't exploded or dosen't have production crash left and right like A-1 and cloverworks (which Again, they Won't Grow nearly as much as Mappa is) with how much high profile Shows they have (and also having 8 APs this early) While they also improved their in-house departments, Training newbies and investing more on their projects and getting big talents like gosso and yabuta in-house

Question from anime newbie. How much can time give to project, if it is already good? For example: what if ufotable had like 1 year more to make Kimetsu no Yaiba Seaosn 2? Would it be way better? Or just slightly better cause they already did great job?
I'd really love to see both the Seshimo and Hayashi teams being able to work on original passion projects of their choice after so many years of brutal workl on big ip's imposed over them; and if Otsuka wasn't willing to do that, they'd just leave.
Like, I know there are big fandoms wishing for the next generation of Shonen action titles to be adapted, but I'm more interested in when will we be able to see the next Space Dandy, Flip Flappers, or Sonny Boy, where the creators can pour their talent and imagination over something interesting and fulfilling to them, with no creative limitations. That would be nice...
I think Hayashi's next project is an original. He mentioned something to the effect one or two years back.
amazing video but clean your fan please😭😭
whats funny is that thanks to MAPPA being so invested in their godamn high profile projects that they forgot the ZLS & Yuri On Ice movies existed, jesus christ they have been waiting for literal years just for no update besides the movie announcements lmfao

I wanted you to talk more about the new members under seshimo team with jujutsu like jun nakagawa and the director of episode 3
Been waiting for this since the csm production hell video
I liked hells paradise, i thought it looked fine. But they do need to slow down on the amount of shows.
Here!! Take This Engagement!
I bet Eren told the CEO to move forward
Great vid as always. I love hearing/ watching about the animation industry. However, it's sad that not only MAPPA does do this, we have JC staff for example. Anyway, I hope MAPPA doesn't collapse at the end, because I somehow like this studio, maybe because they produce most of the IPs I like, lol.
I doubt they would any time soon

@@A1000-b9s welp, its not minority in japan, and that is a big deal for various reasons.
the only problem is the way ryu nakayama answer those interview questions is condescending to the target audience in japan, and on top of that he is new kid on the block for anime director, it's crucial in japanese society to have humility especially if u are young and new for the job, so for japanese anime watcher/manga reader perspective he looks like the cocky newcomer or cocky transfer student or something like that after the interview, i know its kinda wierd for westerner perspective but that's how it is in asia, u gotta try to look at different perspective. things might be bullshit for another part of the world but it might be the opposite for another part of the world.
don't get me wrong im born and raised in asia country but i do think the reaction from the interview is extreme, japanese is soft on the outside but sometimes savage in the inside.

Really good overview video on why jigokuraku looks atrocious but not enough to cover mappa as a whole. This whole mappa rabbit hole is truly one of the most interesting topic to discuss that i dont think a less than a 1 hour video can even do it justice. Their recent huge investment on studios and employee, their connection with big game publisher in japan, and their ridiculous amount of insanely talented director, there are simply way too many things to discuss about mappa, but i dont think any of these really matter tbh. Mappa are still in their transitional era, and i dont think we will ever see any resemblence of what mappa otsuka dreamed of until at least 2025 or 2026. They are just way too unpredictable as a company that any video discussing or predicting their future will probably become irrelevant in 3-4 years time
Atrocious? That’s a bit much.

its almost comical how many projects mappa keeps picking up. they just kept picking up project after project until the production collapsed. the situation is just so depressing yet it somehow makes me laugh
jujutsu 2 is gonna have 3 weeks pause, after episode 5. So shibuya arc is in trouble (the staff too of course). We already have fans conplaning, with good animation in this 4 episodes right now, imagine when the cracks start to show up for real.
Huh I thought I read season was not going to have any pauses like 1 did
They don't have a problem finishing the ep maybe they will reach that point but atm that's not the case...
the fans arent complaining about animation, they just think they are better at directing and adapting the panels (spoiler: theyre not)
They complained about anime isn't 1:1 to manga.
JJK is more of a passion project and with even the low priority episodes of hidden inventory looking better than 90% of anime, i think they gonna nail shibuya
I have a high suspicion that MAPPA will also pick up One Punch Man Season 3. Praying for all the animators
