Ish With Fish yo man try crabbing at doran beach jetty. its smaller than half moon’s but i limit out every time. also if u do go, use a crab jaw (a type of snare) it gets way more at a time and check it every five mins when its biting good
Ish With Fish - That rod looks eerily familiar. Did you get it from my Pops or Uncle Dom?
Can you use zip ties instead of wire to ensure they don't escape?
Hella thorough and informative, Ish! Thanks for taking the time to really go above and beyond with this video. Between this video and Matts' "Definitive Guide to Crab Snaring" which has a heavy emphasis on casting/retrieving technique and researching conditions before you head out, West Coast shore crabbers have a masterclass available to them and ought to be able to lay some dungies down at the dinner table this winter!
P thx P! this is FOURTH time i filmed this. the first three attempts failed due to camera or mic glitches smh. but i persevered👊 and yup, should complement field vids just like Matts'.
Thank you for such complete equipment review for crabbing!! I have learnt so much from this as a a beginner in crabbing.
Happy to help😁
I just recently joined a group and contacted you on FB. I told you i was going to do some research and contact you again at the beginning of the year to get a run down on Crabbing. This was by far the best and most thorough guide to crab snaring gear I seen. The links to all the gear for pricing and comparison is fantastic. I will definitely be buying my crab rig through your Amazon affiliate.
thx so much! i kinda went into overkill on this one, but should answer every snaring question out there👍
Have to say, probably the best instructional video I seen on UA-cam. Will subscribe! Thanks
thx😊 if you like this you might like my rockfish lure tutorial too
Thank you so much for your thorough tutorials! I and my husband are just getting into crab snaring, and your videos (including the ones on tying knots/ attaching line to a spinning reel), have been SO helpful/ appreciated!
np, enjoy and be safe!
@@ishwithfish Oh, you should also update your affiliate links! Some of the gear you link to are older models that are no longer offered... we wanted to support but some of the links are outdated.
The most informative video I’ve found. Thank you!!
Thank you for the great info. I’ve never snared crabs before and what you’re video just provided me, helped so much, shortened the learning curve tremendously. Thanks again.
Excellent info and advice Ish! I’m going to build the larger loop snares and give them a try. The only additional advice I would like to add is to buy some burlap at one of the local home improvement stores, and wrap your bait in it before putting it into the cage snare. Crabs really are good at pulling your bait out, especially squid from the cage. At least burlap would slow down the process a bit.
+Fish the Pacific nice reminder, i guess i forgot to mention bait socks😁 ive tried screen door mesh, ill give burlap a shot, ty!
Great vid Ish! My dad and I always dropped pots for dungies, but his boat finally died so we were thinking of trying some snaring. I will send him the link!
thx kevin! snaring's super fun. i have a collab vid idea actually involving crab and mushrooms, i'll email you.
@@ishwithfish Sounds great man, sooner rather than later we hope... mushroom season is finite! ;)
This is excellent. The only thing I'd add is gear ratio if you're buying a crab snare-specific reel. Thanks for the video.
thx! excellent point👍
THAT is the nicest and most tacticool bucket I have EVER laid my eyes on. What is the cost of the upgraded 5-gallon? That shit is ballin'. I never realized how badly I wanted a pimped out bucket
Thanks for reminding me that the season is about to open! Hope to see you at the pier or on the jetty!
Best informative video in crab 🦀 snaring. Thank you for sharing 🙋
your amazingly good at explaining how to crab. you always explain to the fullest about crabbing and what to do. ive learned so much from you! you should becoe a crabbing instructor
thx so much!
Wow, just saw this video. It's very informative and very well put together. Nicely done. You should have way more subscribers imo.
ah thx so much! very kind words😁 if anyone has any snaring questions, this vid should answer all of them.
Great video Ish on crab snaring, I got some good tips from it and I am definitely getting some of the rods and reels you recommended.
Great video ish! I’m new to crabbing and this video pretty much covers all my questions about gear, technics, and regulations. Keep up the good work and I hope to see you out here on the central coast crabbing or fishing!
+micah madiro right on bro, good luck this season! let me know how it goes on the central coast.
Great info. This will help me on my next crabbing trip.
+NCbassman right on, good luck out there👍
New sub, great info video, I'm thinking about trying 'snare crabbing' in the future, thanks for sharing your knowledge !
Ish , well done. Professionally done. Thanks. Next, do a kayak crabbing gear review and tutorials . It has never been done comprehensively before. Pick up another 100,000 subscribers if you do it.
thx for the kind words. i guess i need to get a kayak first lol. i'm thinking of getting one and often thought of dropping pots around hmb. if i get into it, you'll see it here :)
Groupon has a Kayaking HMB deal . People rent the kayak and go crabbing with it. $25/hr person. No investment needed.
Fantastic detailed video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience which I will use as someone who is new to crab snaring. Happy fishing and maybe see you out there (I'm in the East Bay).
right on bro, happy crabbing👍🏼
This is such a informative video! Thank you so much!
Great presentation dude
Very informative. Your link to the snare on Amazon doesn't work. Is there another one you recommend?
Great vid my brotha! Let's get a collab going soon! BTW I'm hella jealous of your badass bucket. Some really awesome ideas here man.
Great video!! Straight to the point
Awesome channel bud, I'm subscribing.
+J Ahmed thx for your viewership🤙
Hi Ish, thanks for posting this video. Very informative. Can you tell us if how many rods you are allowed to use?
+Jay Chino thx bro. for CA 2017-2018, 2 rod max at piers, no limit in surf. 99% sure no limit on jetties, double check regs though, link in vid description.
Thank you for the concise education!
Great presentation, thanks.
This a such a great video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I got 3 keepers this week In Westport Washington using the knowledge you shared. Do you have any recommendations for surf spikes (rod holders) to buy or resources on how to make them?
Invest in a finger glove or gloves for casting. Seen to many people cut there hands really bad. Especially with a braided line. Oh.... Pray before, during, and after each trip. Also learn how to read the tides, incoming, and out going. Winds.... This will give you an advantage.. Good luck! Have fun, be safe.🙏💯🦀
Dude, awesome video. Thank you
Of all the fishing I have done, crabbing is probably the kind of fishing I have the least experience with. Although I should say "was" because I feel like a pro now after watching this.
just don't forget the bubble box batteries and you're good to go! lmao
Thanks man that was informative
Great tutorial on crab fishing... Love the collapsible water bucket.. What line. Test do you use? FLUORO?.. I don't see anyone using casting reel ..WHY? ...hope seeing your clip in the opening weekend just passed.. Thanks
Great video ish!!WHEN IS DUNGEONESS CRAB SEASON for the bay area?and when will you have your own crab tournament?i think you should do one unless I missed it already...
Eric Villasenor nov 1st i think
OutNAbout415 thank you!
Eric Villasenor sorry bro im incorrect its nov 4 and it should be great this year!
OutNAbout415 thanks bro
Ish, You should organize Crab Snaring tournament. What do guys think? thumbs up ?
Your willingness to not crack that puppy open and eat it is mind blowing. Haha jk. Love me some crabs.
very informative thank you very much..just subscribed to your channel
right on, thx👍🦀🦀
You should check out Alvey reels from oz for a crank.Cheers man
Wendsday oct. 25 HMB south jetty. Ill be there! Bring your big bucket.
Wait when is crabbing seasson open? November?
Lol
Alex Arreola lols always starts first Sat of November. gotta wait one more week for dungies!
Ish With Fish bring your poke pole
According to the link under the description, your favorite rod is Penn PRESF1530S10 Prevail. I think it is MH rod with 1-5oz lure rating. Can it actually handle the snare filled with sinker and bait up to 10oz? If it does, I will definitely buy the new model because most budget rods with 3-8oz rating are too stiff to cast a good distance. Thank you in advance!
so my link used to point to the 11 mh, 2-6oz, enough backbone to launch 8oz snare stuff with bait. If only the 10 and 12 are available, id defer to the 12 to be safe👍🏼
Hey Ish, great video. Question, I am also making my own crab snares this season but my loops are 13.5 inches long whereas the ones in your video are probably 20 inches. Is there an advantage to having longer loops, I guess to cover more area but would it slow down your loop closing speed ? I guess I should experiment and make a couple of snares with bigger loops and see if there are any difference. Thanks
Carlos Fung good eye. i used to go smaller, but on the last day of last season i experimented with these bigger ones and killed it. it was a calm day so that helped, but i think the bigger loops simply covered more real estate. i set the rod hard anyways so 'loop closure' speed is a non-factor imo.
Great tips, thanks.
I'm going to go crab snaring in November when the season opens. should I go first week or second week because I'm worried on the first week of the season is going to be to crowded should I go first week or wait
+fishing with ethan i would go second saturday if i were you, maybe during outgoing tide👍
The 2nd day is dramatically quieter than the saturday opener. I noticed a huge difference last year, Pacifica pier though I would avoid like the plague.
I have a Okuma Rockaway Light Weight Carbon Saltwater Surf Rods 10 ft, Med-Hvy 12-25 lb surf rod that I bought for Perch Fishing; would this work for Crabbing? either Snare or flat Crab Trap? What reel would you use?
Amazing video
Do you prefer mono line or weed line like you have in the video? What works best in your experience?
in my experience, 130lb mono leader line is best for crab snaring loops.
Hey Ish, great video about crabbing. I do have a question though. Is it legal in San Francisco to transport live crab with water inside the bucket? Thanks!!
i think the live catch transportation rule only applies to freshwater bodies, they don't want invasives moving around. double check regs though. iirc, this does not apply to bringing live crabs home for consumption.
@@ishwithfish Sounds great, thanks Ish keep up the good work!!
...very informative...
😀👍
Use a dry bag. It folds up and fits into a backpack. And if you don't catch anything, you don't have to walk back with a bucket. And a dry bag is like an ultra durable plastic bag so it holds water.
What rod and reel would you suggest for snaring crab from a boat? Thanks.
snaring from a boat sounds inefficient, but if you had to, any 6' h jigging setup will do👍🏼
Ish With Fish Sometimes I only put 2 pots in the water so I can keep myself entertained by using a snare or crab hawk while I wait.
👍good info
Is there a restriction on how big of a loop you can have? My loops are about 13inch in length
no restriction on hoop size, but there's a 6 loop maximum in ca.
@@ishwithfish thanks for replying! Heading out to bakers beach tomorrow. Hopefully I land my first Dungeness!
Do you think if I use weed trimmer lines to make a crab snare for the Atlantic blue crabs it would work? Do you think it would be sensitive enough to snare blue crabs?
I used 45lb mono lines on a windy day once and the wind blew all of the loops shut!
might be too thick for blue crabs🤔 try 100lb mono leader, i use that for the lighter oz snares.
@@ishwithfish Yeah, I figure the 100lb mono might do the trick. But they are stiff and tend to have terrible memories when you pull them out of the spool, which makes them hard to work with! Thanks for the response, bud! I appreciate it!
@@grandwonder5858 np! try putting the mono in really hot water for 5 minutes, should remove the line memory.
Hello, I just wondering which brand of weed wacker line you use or upgrade the OME one?
I'm a new sub an I had a quick question. I'm fairly new to fishing and on a tight budget. I was hoping to get 1 combo for mostly saltwater/salmon fishing. Out of the penn battle 2 or daiwa by reels, what would you recommend?
hi, thx for the sub. i'm actually going to do a bg review and bg vs battle ii review soon. i've had experience now with both models in the 4000 size, and i'd give the edge to the BG. it has a slower gear ratio, but it spins smoother, has higher line capacity, and due to the lower gear ratio and bigger main gear it'd be a better option for bottom fishing (rockfish, halibut, etc). can't go wrong with either, but imo the BG wins.
Ish With Fish awesome thank you soo much. I was leaning towards the bg as well. I look forward to wathing your review vids
Hey Ish, I'm interested in the Okuma Solaris you have but in the casting version. I want to use it for crabs, rays, and sharks. How do you like it? i know its a heavy, but how is the sensitivity and the build of the rod itself? any give in it or is it really stiff? thanks
thx for the comment. so imo it's perfect for rays and sharks :) i actually just filmed a night vid where i put a bunch of juvenile rays and sharks on it, should post soon. it's a true heavy with nice moderate action. i was able to hear my bell go off on little leopard nibbles and set the hook np, and had the backbone to hoist a 10lb+ ray out of the bay and up the rocks. the heavy-rated daiwa emcast is a telephone pole lol, but the heavy-rated solaris with good combo of backbone and flex to make it a legit surf and bay rod. and yep, build quality is excellent! durable cork wrap, fuji guides i think, fit and finish dead on. it's a nice step up from the ugly stik bigwater and penn prevail.
Ish With Fish thank you for the info! Keep up the great videos!
Hi..I was wondering how do you usually lose your rigs? If it is by snagging the bottom, have you considered using lighter gauge lines that are strong enough to lift a crab, but weak enough to snap off in case it gets snagged so you don't lose the whole rig.
hi, if you're targeting dungeness, you usually don't snag because dungies are far in mostly sandy areas. you have to use 100lb test mono at a min for loops because you need the firmness to hold the loop shape during casting. anything lighter and the loops will close by themselves.
@@ishwithfish Good point and +1 on retaining the loop shape. Im experimenting with lower gauge lines that also has good line memory first so that i wont lose the whole rig. The places im trying here in Singapore tend to have lot of rocks.
Thanks for the video and tips!
hey ish, gonna be in pismo beach for veterans day weekend.
do you know if dungeness are there?
+marine6 nice, going to the dunes? i doubt there's dungeness in those shore waters. they seem to prefer deeper water from Santa Cruz and further south, 250'+. if you see crab shells on the beach, that's a good sign.
thanks, ill let you know how it goes.
last time i was there i was slammin the surf perch.
they were even biting on squid!
+marine6 dayum. like the squirrel said when he reached in his sack: "that's nuts!"
Whats the size and bag limit for rock crabs?
Also, I've used a rafter square as a crab gauge and the warden was cool with it!
Rock crabs include rock, red and yellow species. Rock crab season is open year-round. Daily bag limit 35 per person (dayum!), min 4" wide. Updated the description for ya too. Nice warden!
Thanks Ish!
How do you put those rods in the back of a 5 ft bed? Seem so long! Lol do you have any suggestions of rods that are less than 10 ft?
they're all 2pc nowadays! these 11-12' rods break down to 5-6' pieces, fits in small cars or diagonally in 5-6' beds.
So what’s better the ugly stick or the beefstick?
I'm so glad I found this video. But I still dont know which rod and reel to get for crabbing. Help please?! I dnt want to over spend, and dont want something too big. Just want something where I can cast far enough for my size. And strong enough to hold the crabs when reeling in.
hi, thx for watching! if you're on a budget, consider the Shakespeare ALPHA 70 reel (comes with 30 lb mono I think) and the 10' Heavy Daiwa Beefstick. You can prob find this combo under $50 and catch crabs all season long. If you can spend a bit, get a BG 6000, same rod mentioned above.
Ish With Fish I was not able to find a Daiwa BG 6000. And decided to go with a 6.6 daiwa beefstick, since the 10' will be a bit too big for me. Will the Shakespeare alpha 70 work with the 6.6 heavy beefstick?
Those Alphas actually last forever, good choice. You should have gotten the 10' imo, you need the length to get the casting distance away from jetty/pier. Also you can control the crab better in the waves with a longer rod. Plus it's better balanced for that A70 reel.
Ish With Fish I'll give this one a try and see how it is. I was worried the rod was gna be too heavy for me to cast. But thanks again for the help.
Meekou Lee the casting distance outweighs the slight weight penalty. my mom is 4'10" and uses 10' rods all day😁 she's been in a few of my crabbing vids. but nonetheless you'll def catch with 6' rods too. good luck this season!
good information, thank you
Best knot to tie on s swivel? Any swivel recommendations ?
if you're crab snaring, just use a palomar knot, it's all you need :). for snaring, i use cheap brass swivels rated 50 lbs.
I've got a lot of 80 lb steel leader material. Is that any good for the snares?
pretty sure legally loops have to be made out of mono or fluoro. my sweet spot is 125-130lb mono leader material for loops👍
How do you feel about a penn spin fisher ??
great reels, overkill for crabbing imo. daiwa bg a better fit👍
Hi Ish, for your fav penn prevail rod is it able to handle the crab snare? I looked up the specs for lure weight and it was in the 2 - 6 ounce range. Thanks.
hi jay, yup it most definitely can handle a crab snare. i've used mine for 2 seasons, prob put a couple hundred casts on it, even though it's rated 2-6 i've thrown 8 oz np. i like it's mh power because it does a better job 'loading' the snare, seems to cast farther than my heavy okuma solaris rod. fyi the butt cap fell off after one season so i just super glued it, otherwise absolutely no issues with it.
Ish With Fish, Thanks Ish, now i am debating between the Shakespeare Ugly Stick big water 12 footer and the Penn Prevail 11 footer. I might be able to get a great discount on either.
+Jay Chino can't go wrong either way. the prevail is lighter but prob doesn't have the backbone the big water does. just a thought in case you want to double duty it for rays and sturgeon.
Ish With Fish, the Penn Battalion 11 footer is also in the choices now. Choices. Lol
+Jay Chino choices! lol. i think the only difference is battalion has Fuji guides and maybe slightly lighter blank. choices!
ooooo you have an expired fishing license!, I'm coming back next year to say the same thing lol.
😂😂
I had a 65# braid main with a 50# mono leader to the snare. I had 3oz weight on. Do you know why my line would snap?
Hello my friend I’m from Washington I’m planning visit mi family in south San Francisco this thanksgiving I’m planning fishing crabs in Pacifica pier what I need for fishing there it’s true I don’t need fishing license in California piers are free ?
How much bait do you usually bring for a full day of snaring
8 hours?🤔 2 boxes of squid to be safe👍🏼
Where do you buy your squid? Do you sell your traps?
any asian grocery store has squid👍🏼 i don't sell my snares (they're super time consuming) but maybe i'll make a how-to vid one day!
where can i buy the materials for diy snare?
Dont forget to purchase your crab license which I think I pay 2 dollars & change for in addition to your fishing licence. At least thats the case in Ca.
Hey Ish, ever think about selling the snares that you make?
unfortunately no. i've learned snare making is very time-consuming, at least my versions. i can only afford to make them as i lose them. i do know a couple local guys that make much better ones and sell, interested in seeing a video about them?
Ish With Fish Thanks Ish, I would definitely like to see it. I originally intended to buy some from Fisherman's Life but I dont think he makes them anymore. Any idea where I can buy good quality ones?
there's a guy in the morethanfishing fb community that hand makes snares and sells them on craigslist. look up 'crab snare' in SF Bay Area, his models are the ones with 'ERO5' imprinted on the lead. from what i've heard, they're high quality and work well, check them out :)
Ish With Fish Thanks, Ish. I'll check it out
Not finding crab snare on your Amazon store, where to buy them?
ah, if they're sold out on amazon, google 'crabslayer snares', this guy ken makes great ones.
So if Im in th e getty, and I have keepers or in the pier I still need a license? Or when your crabbing from shore?
Israel Rivas need a license
Francisco Martinez is this new bc I've Crabbed in the getty and the pier but when I've thought you didn't need one, on getty and piers?
In CA, just need license for crabbing from shore, not structure. I bring up the license reminder for guys who fish and crab the surf👍
Israel Rivas pier or jetty is free.....like ish said shore it needs a license
Ish is a big fan of round knobs...
big knobs always give me crabs 😂
Ish With Fish LOL very good... ;) and kudos for taking it as a bit of fun.
@@rabbitphobia always😊🤙gl this season!
Ish With Fish you too brother you too.
What line u use for the crab snare ? Thks
this is just weed wacker line, but i've since updated it to 130lb mono leader line, much better.
One thing if making the bait box is there size limits???
no size limit on crab snares, you just can't exceed 6 loops in california👍🏼
um,,,, i don't believe you actually have to have a crab gauge, in terms of the dfg.... it's just a great idea to have one... but really enjoy your videos!!! i hadn't thought of a bubbler, nor of different sized buckets... great suggestions, great videos! tysm from a total newbiew... actually, i got my crab snare (haven't used it yet, haven't ever tried for crab) by finding it submerged in the sand, right off the surf. i think they lost it casting it, as the braid was busted right at the swivel, and the snare was where it would fly into the water at high tide. thanks again!
thx for watching! and yes, per ca regs if you're in the act of crabbing or have a crab in possession, you have to have an accurate crab gauge in possession to show you measured it correctly. a ruler or tape measure will not count as a gauge device.
@@ishwithfish Any idea if homemade gauges allowed, if they are accurate?
Is the crab license the same as the fishing license in california?
yup!
When does Dungeness crab season start in nor cal
Gavin ludeman season usually runs first sat of Nov through June 30.
Hi Ish, Can a Daiwa BG 4000 or 4500 handle crab snaring?
+Jay Chino yes totally can. if it's your only reel it'll work, but you'll have a much easier time with a 6000+ size. i know a couple guys that use the 8000 bg and its like the crabs aren't even there, it spins that well.
Btw your an OG TOO LOL
Does the stick or rod length have to be 10ft if I'm short.? I'm 5ft
10' should work. my mom is under 5' and she uses a 10' rod 😁
@@ishwithfish I just purchased a 6'6" Shakespeare sturdy Stik saltwater spinning rod Medium Heavy with a Line weight 20-40lbs & Lure weight 2-8oz along with a Daiwa regal LT spinning reel 3000.
what about action of the rods ?
action doesn't matter so much, just need good backbone to winch them in. if i had to choose, i like med fast to fast action so you can close the loops asap when you pull it in.
@@ishwithfish thanks man. i was thinking slow to medium the logic being that if there was some kind of hiccup it would still keep tension (?) .. but med fast to fast makes sense for the actual snaring . will go crabbing for the first time soon thanks for the tips ! have a 10.5 mod fast rod on the way
@@ello_ello_ yeah, in my experience, you want that faster 'loop set' plus if you snare two or more, the extra stiffness helps. right on, gl!
in alaska and cananda too
dungeis live in
totally, thx for the reminder. i wonder why locally sold gauges only show CA, OR and WA though.
Would an ugly stik with a bg5000 work?
5000 will work, although 8000 would be best.
@@ishwithfish thanks
do you need a license even from a pier?
+Arm Salas hi, sorry if i wasnt clear, just need license from shore, not structure like jetties or piers.
Ish With Fish that’s what I thought too. But I was thinking there might be different rules for crabbing.
I’m 15 years old do I need a license to crab on the jetties of hmb
+JP Adrian Fortaleza no license needed from structure, like jetties or piers👍 just need license if your 16+yo from shores.
can u do catch and cook ?
+DeezRMyDays for sure, hope to do a crab cnc soon!
Oh ok thanks bro
The lid can double as a toilet seat (16:10).
