    The canopy sure is squeaking,...or might be the cowling for the new instrument panel,...our club has 3 ASK-21s and we had the same noise with one of them,...it turned out to be the cowling at the curved corner. The bird looks great.

    It would be interesting to measure the polar of your Ls3 both with and without these winglets, for example at the Idaflieg sommertreffen.
    Since this profile was used on many older gliders, these winglets could work on all those gliders.

    Very neat looking Ls-3 you have there, great inspiration for my LS3-17! Any ideas about if, when and for what price these winglets will be available for sale? Think these look way better than the recent developed winglets, but performance improvement is another thing to look for of course. When you have more flights flown with it, I’m very interested in your opinion about the winglets. Good luck on the world championships, I will follow your performances online!

    Another great video! Thanks. The new vario is the XC-variometer ? It looks like a great integration tool with the Open Vario. I also like the small aerodynamic tipsupport underneath the winglet. Is it sacrificial in that it can be replaced?

    • @SteFly
      @SteFly  3 роки тому

      No, it is not a XC-Vario. This new prototype vario uses differential GPS antennas and an IMU sensor. Only the sensors costs a lot more than the XC-Vario.

    • @SteFly
      @SteFly  3 роки тому +1

      The tipsupports are attached with doublesided tape, so I can replace them..

    What happens if the tow rope malfunctions and doesn't release from the glider? Can the airplane release from its end? Otherwise both the glider and plane would have to land together?

    • @MrMichaelvandekoppel
      @MrMichaelvandekoppel 3 роки тому

      Yes, the towplane can release to. The towplane will fly back to the airfield with the glider and release the cable when the glider is on its path to land.

    Too bad you don't get any participation. WOW! Is the subwinglet oriented the opposite flow direction to the main winglet to 'unscrew' the tip vortex, like it was on the LongEZ I built, with the airfoil actually morphing over subwinglet 'span'? Just curious.
    And were these tunnel tested for L/D increase? Any notable changes in handling characteristics?

  • @RoelBaardman

    Would love to know more about the variometer. Can you share some info?

    • @SteFly
      @SteFly  3 роки тому +2

      It has two GNSS antennas and uses an IMU sensor. As far as I know it doesn't use static pressure or TEK pressure for the vario. It is very fast and also has real time wind. Up to now it's a test device which uses the Air Traffic display with a different software for the user interface.
      Thursday was my first thermal flight with it and I'm super impressed.

    • @RoelBaardman
      @RoelBaardman 3 роки тому

      @@SteFly I suspected something like that. I'm building something like that as well, and have test flown with two GNSS antennas too recently. I'd love to get into contact with the developers.

    • @thomasbaro7377
      @thomasbaro7377 3 роки тому

      It would be great to hear more about that Variometer. Especially if it’s not using pressure inputs but rather relies on GPS signals as well as inputs from the IMU (inertial measurement unit?).
      Also, I was wondering if the two-tone sound has a special meaning. The major beep sounded a lot like the normal vario sound. But it sounded to as if the secondary beep was either below the first one or above depending on the gradient of the current thermal, ie if the thermal is getting stronger the secondary beep is above the primary one and if the thermal is getting weaker the secondary beep is below the primary one…
      Need to listen to that again :)

  • @asw19B100
    @asw19B100 3 роки тому

    Do you know the source of all the airframe clunking noises? Is it the carry through perhaps or? Could something be waxed to minimise it? In an AS, it seems control input related, but this sounds different. For me, it’s distracting in the video. Really liked being able to read mechanical vario in concert with audio vario.

    • @SteFly
      @SteFly  3 роки тому

      I´m not completely sure what´s the cause. In reality it is not as bad as it sounds in the video...

    • @chrisehmke1651
      @chrisehmke1651 3 роки тому

      The original LS3 needed a lot of lead to fight aileron flatter. The wings were ridiculous heavy. That's why it was called LS-Blei, as Stefan told already. I have a LS3-17, when flown in the 15 meter configuration, it is identical to the LS3A.

    • @steilkurbler4973

      Some gliders got it, some don't. It's just the seat shell giving in and rubbing against it's mounting points. Usually it's not dangerous or bad.
      It may be annoying, but on the other hand it may also be one more indicator that tells you what your plane is doing.
